I was the stage manager for these boys on the Lock Up Stage at Reading Festival a good few years back. They were sodding awesome. Very nice fellas as well. Best job in the world when you have a band like this. Thanks chaps. Actually, funny story: I do remember them opening the show with “Futures” and the guitar tech had forgotten to retune the guitar to the correct key after their earlier set on another stage. When the band crashed in after the opening riff, they were all half a step out! They had to stop, let the tech retune the guitar and then fire in again! Mad. They all laughed and took it in their stride. Pros. Great memories.
I never comment on RUclips videos. I feel like I waited a lifetime for this video. Thank you for giving this band the attention they deserve! I’d love a follow up with them and Mark Trombino talking studio tricks and approaches…
I saw JEW in 1999 for the first time at the Fireside bowl in Chicago. At the time I was head over heels in love with clarity. Still am. Some unknown band called Death Cab for cutie opened for them. Amazing!!!❤
As if there’s any doubt from the still sold out shows, JEW are still hugely important and hugely loved the world over. Thanks for the music lads!! I’ve seen them about 8 times live and I’ll still be watching them when I’m 70 and they’re at the local big casinos for $23 a ticket. For me that would be heaven.
One of my favorite bands of all time. I can happily listen along to any of their records and enjoyed this look at the gear used on albums I love. Hope to see them live soon. Futures (the album) in particular means a lot to me.
Or/also we can talk about how they keep making amazing music because they are actually the best band in the world! Not many people realize Jim and Tom were influenced by Jesus Lizard/Unwound and how amazing their small basement shows were. I so you guys 97 maybe 98 with Sweep the Leg Johnny in Portland. Thank you for the years of amazing commitment to music!
wow, we used to cover one song of these guys in a cover band, but i never knew anything about them or their other music. They are really good. definitely going to dive into their music. great video.
on a side note, I run a mesa single rec, and now going to start using a friedman IR-D pre-amp pedal and fender fr. Mainly for ease of compact light weight gigs. some of the best band sounds I've heard come from a two guitar band, one mesa and one marshall type amp. the sound is massive, and also separate definable parts are all clear and heard, but the sum is spectacular.
JEW is such a unique band -they not only "get away with" playing things other bands would be teased for, but they somehow pull it all off too! ive seen them live at least 5 times and their live show is really good too. perfect unassuming rock stars, folks.
I distinctly remember Jim having a Les Paul Raw Power which had a pretty plain grade maple top cap in a natural finish - this would have been directly post-Bleed American early 2000s era. Was hoping he'd talk about that one, because I always thought it was a sharp looking LP that really stood out.
I remember in Denver shortly before Bleed American, Jim had a super reverb and a les Paul with mini humbuckers, I think.Tom had that orange and sg every time they came through town
They've always sounded good. They're like pop composers. I'm guessing Mark trombino taught them a lot, but there's a lot going on in Jim's mind! He does eat world. Also very under rated drummer!
This is so sick, I mourn for the kids starting now that will probably never have the insane (awesome) experience of dragging massive amps to small gigs. If you've never made the sound guy groan when you load in, are you really even rock n roll? We've finally hit my "Back in my day" moment 😂 I do wish the UA OX I use now (with those same old massive amps) existed back then though, would have solved so many issues, and I'd probably still have all my high end hearing.
Have seen this band through so many iterations (Static Prevails hit me real hard at the right age) and they always sound SO GOOD live and put forth so much great energy. My funny story: I had an all-access pass at a festival they were playing and was beyond excited to go watch them from the side of the stage. They were in their (current) Fractal era, and it was definitely not the experience I was looking for...all drums and the only guitars/vocals that you could hear were coming out of the mains. Not even any stage monitors happening. It was SUCH A WEIRD SOUND EXPERIENCE. Once I walked back into the crowd, it sounded a hell of a lot better. 🤣
The Jim Adkins JA-90 Thinline Tele with set neck and P90s seems to have attracted a quiet cult following. Still made in Indonesia, I think, but priced like a Mexican-made. I don't believe that there has ever been an American-made version. Jim's description of the sound he wanted makes a lot of sense - the clarity of a Tele with the punch of a Les Paul.
At this point I'm pretty convinced Jim Adkins has a portrait hidden in his attic somewhere, man's ageing like a fine wine.
Nice Dorian Gray reference
Lmao ok that was a good Dorian Gray reference for sure
Amazing how well someone can age by keeping their hair and not letting themselves go.
He looks like Steve Carrell
It was ditching the wine that did it.

The only good album
Hell yeah man. Saw so many punk bands at fireside in the late 90s and early 00s.
This is such a great insight. I love Jimmy Eat World. Clarity and Futures are just such beautiful records and can still listen to both front to back.
love the detailed explanation of their gear through the years, thanks for this!
This is really one of the greatest modern rock bands. They are soooo solid live. Caught them back in 2010 and was blown away.
As if there’s any doubt from the still sold out shows, JEW are still hugely important and hugely loved the world over. Thanks for the music lads!! This video is awesome! I would love to see Reverb do more of these with other bands!
One of my all time favorites, great upload! Futures was my high school in a nutshell!

Static Prevails and Clarity are beautiful and timeless.
Best thing I’ve seen today, or will see most days ❤
It just popped in my head but I would love to see Jim Atkins and Ben Gibbard collaborate. Just throwing it out there!
Really cool series. I'm not even that big of a fan of the band but I would watch more of these.
This video was made for me, I'm so stoked ❤
Love the Archers of Loaf shoutout*
That was such a great video! ❤🤘🏻

Just saw you guys play at When We Were Young Day 2! Hearing The Sweetness live was INCREDIBLE
Everyone starts with the Crate combo amp!
Fender Twin Reverb
@@greysuit17sure kid
@@CW0123 I did it was my drummers father in-laws amp my punk band borrowed back in the day, “kid” 😂😂😂
Laughs nervously as a JCM 800 was my first amp lol

This was great. A solid band over the years. I didn't realize how much they sound like a heavier Gin Blossoms!

Totally dig this band. There entire library is fantastic all bangers

Moving my old Ampeg 8x10 fridge into basements and gigs with multiple floors is what I attribute my back problems to.
This is STILL my favorite band. Since the beginning, these dudes deliver. 🤘

Jimmy Eat World has always had amazing guitar tones. They hold up even today.
Dayum, Jimmy Eat World. Legit forgot they existed.
My hometown heroes ❤️
I've always loved the drum sounds in "Cautioners" and wondered why they sounded the way they do. Mystery solved!
there is no band quite like jimmy eat world
Never clicked on a video so fast
Great to see bands giving us the scoop for the tones us basement dwellers have been chasing trying to emulate their songs
Jimmy❤
Is that a hearty Evan chuckle at 7:03? ❤

The one at my local shop just can’t sell.
@@Ottophilhow much are they selling it for?
Can confirm that they are awesome guitars
This is the dream guitar at this point. I almost pulled the trigger on a Squire Carbonita which is similar, but the JA-90 is so clean!
Share your axe fx presets Jim! :-)
TIL they came here to Tucson to do “Futures”
based
I use a half stack because I suck at singing. No one wants to hear that.
Fractal…..lame!!
Poops
Plops
Never cared for anything past Clarity ('99) sorry guys
