I would stay away from Seattle Coffee Gear---bought a Rocket appartamento which failed after 6 months while still under warranty, they charged me to return the unit to Seattle, took nearly 5 weeks to get it back and it still had the same problem--boiler would not heat. They refused to exchange machine or offer credit, had to send back again this after multiple unreturned calls and CS runaround. While I apparently got a bad unit as Rocket seems to get overall good reviews I wish I had bought locally for from another online vendor, SCG experience has been BAD.
Randy Rich That is good to know. I was planning on ordering a Rocket or a Jura J90 (I'm still torn) from them so maybe I'll stay away and buy local instead. Customer service is huge for me and it sounds like you got a bit hosed. Sure, there are two sides to every story but even if you're exaggerating, you should have been taken care of if you were under warranty. Anyway, thanks for posting. I will stay subscribed and watch their videos because they are informative but probably will stay away from actual purchases.
Exactly my experience with Seattle Coffee Gear TWICE! First time it was Saeco Auto. It failed in 6 months, I sent it for repair, got it back not working! Sent it back again, this time they've fixed it. It took a few moths to be done with repairs. Now I have exact same thing going on with Atom Eureka grinder. It started developing issues just after first 30 days. In 6 months it failed completely so I sent it for repair. Last week I got it back and IT DOESN'T START AT ALL!!! Now it's on the way back to them again. Way back I bought from them CC1, this one failed (some pipe inside had holes so it flooded with hot water inside) in under first 30 days, so I just returned it. Me personally, I'm done with SCG. Even with these videos as they don't tell the truth and all devices in their reviews are excellent and all coffee is great.
Wow, maybe that’s why their store in Portland Oregon closed permanently. Not a good sign in a community that loves its espresso. Plus there are very few stores here that sell good machines and grinders so it would seem that something is very wrong at SCG. I bought a machine from the Portland store several years ago and haven’t had any issues but never had to have it repaired. Also, most companies that care about their image with the public would go out of their way to make customers happy and seeing these comments here that haven’t had a response from SCG is disheartening.
Rocket Appartamento....If one uses filtered water, should one need to use the Rocket Water Filter? also since the boiler is copper, is it lined inside to prevent leaching of the metal into the water? Thanks!!
Been looking to replace my 14 year old Oscar. Yes 14 years. It has served us well and has been very reliable with only a few wearable parts and proper cleaning and maintenance. I decided to buy the Rocket Appartamento from you. Main reason is the ease of maintenance on the group head and valves. The timed pour of the Oscar was my hang up. Second reason Is the steam lever on the top of the Oscar. Third and final reason is it doesn't look like a Hamilton Beach product you get at Walmart.
No auto cleaner, just do it every 2 weeks depending on how much you use it. I would not descale the machine, I have a bag in my water tank that keeps it clean. Descaling should only be done by professionals in my opinion.
Great video Gail and the crew! How about some espresso shot tests? To test the pressure, pre-infusion, what kind of crema the machine makes and taste of the espresso as well!
Gail with what appears to be the amount of coffee you consume in a day, one has to wonder if you're not wired all day....LOL You have a great job. Getting to test & consume great coffee. You're truly blessed. :)
Nice entry level into prosumer universe. Though if you have a quasi-prosumer like the Silvia, I would suggest getting a few more years out of your Silvia and upgrade it straight to a dual boiler with PID.
HI. Im really interested on upgrading my breville barista. i love the rocket. i want to know if it is a good choice for home. I want a machine for many years with less maintenance service as possible. which would be the best option..thanks a lot
how does it compare to Breville's dual boiler? That guy has a lot of bells and whistles, PID and stuff... but it looks like an appliance, a toaster, and not like a fancy machine, like a rocket. I am also not sure about Breville's longevity. Did you guys have a lot of customers bringing their BDBs back for repairs after a year or 2?
I see some potential plumbing giving up from metal fatigues due to being too rigid without any considerations to water pump vibrations and temp expansions and contractions The copper plumbing should have been lengthened by adding coils and annealed if they aren't so to better absorb flexing fatigues. The first thing that will give up is the weld (soldering).

I think pump have elastic conections as remember, silicone in, metal mesh enforced ruber out
Hey ! Thank you for the nice video, after that nice review we got one ourself ! We just unpacked it, started it and after 5 or 6 espressi the pump stopped pumping water from the tank and is just humming all the time, and does not stop humming. Do you have an idea what to do ?
It sounds like it is trying to fill the steam boiler. Try removing the water tank and pushing it back down to see if you can clear the line so it can pull water in. If that doesn't solve it, give us a call and we can dig deeper and see what the issue is. Cheers! 866-372-4734

Seattle Coffee Gear I recently purchased a Rocket Appartamento. Upon instalation I forgot to open up the steam arm, when water starts pumping for the first time. How bad is this?
Hi, I am almost set on buying this however I heard people online saying that due to the appartamento is not heat insulated, therefore it will affect its lifespan. What do you think about this? Should I just go for the giotto instead?
Pardon my ignorance, but what's the importance of a boiler pressure gauge, in the context of pulling an espresso shot? It seems that nearly all machines in this price range and higher include *brew* pressure gauges, which is helpful in obtaining proper extraction, and I'm just curious as to why Rocket does not in the Apartemento's case. Thanks
I love the look of this machine, with the big valves. Are they sprung? It's a bit out of my price range (was looking at an Expobar Lever) but it does look nice. Do you not miss the brew head pressure gauge?
How are you able to steam and brew at the same time? My understanding of the HX machines, is you could only do one at a time. Thanks. Really great channel.
Does that copper boiler have lead?? Also, now that it's been a year since you made this video, is there anything you'd like to comment on that could help in my big decision? I'm looking to for a Home Use machine, needing about 15-20 espresso shots per day. Thanks!
hi! so this comes with the 2-hole steam wand, would it make a difference in terms of frothing if i swapped it for a 4-hole or does the boiler power not enough anyways?
+Seattle Coffee Gear How long does the Appartamento last? How long is it supposed to last. I am going back and forth between the linea mini and the appartamento and I would assume the linea will last longer. but if it is about the same I could go with a lesser espresso for 3,000$ less. Also does the appartamento come with a stainless steel portafilter? and if not can you buy one separately? Let me know if possible! Thanks!
Hi guys thanks for the advice - from your reviews I have recently bought an appartamento (awesome machine btw) and this morning when I switched it on it heated up and works as normal however the green light has stopped working ?? Is this a normal issue ?? Keep up the great vids guys Theo
Weird question- What is the name of the tub you dump the used grinds into? I see similar [usually built in] things at cafes and I think it would be pretty useful at home!
I bought this coffee maker and the boiler and tubing are not made of copper like the one in the video, but made of steel. Why is it? Is it of worse quality for it?
Just got mine today. The pressure gauge has a ton of condensation on it, and it won't fully get up to temperature (To the green block). Really disappointed.
Do you think they left out the boiler insulation to keep cost down? I always thought that was a premium feature and was surprised to see it left out in this video.
Any thoughts on this machine vs the Profitec 500 that Whole Latte Love sells? WLL gave some thoughts in comments about why they prefer the Profitec over the Rocket. SCG want to give your thoughts?
Gail, Does the pre infusion happen automatically when the lever is fully engaged? Also, I'm planning on purchasing the sette 270 or 270w when it comes out. Until that time, I have an encore to work with. Will it be good enough?
+Seung Wook Jeon The lever has a halfway point, which begins the pre infusion. Then you lift the level the full way to begin extraction. Your Encore won't work well with this machine. You might be able to pull a shot with really fresh coffee- but the Sette leaps beyond :D
This machine is very good compared to other machines, but for a guy who is in college right now , its a bit expensive. But i am sure its is worth every penny
This machine details on Europe for @ £1100 ,so clearly a decent grinder would be essential. Anyone have any suggestions for compatible grinder that doesn't cost half as much as the Rocket itself? Thanks.
Great review. Maybe you can clear something up for me though. I'd heard that Rocket machines were going down the Fracino route and properly engineering their HX machines so they don't need a cooling flush to lower the temp of what would traditionally be flash heated water. Is this not the case with the Apartmento?
Nice video on the appartamento !!! but in comparison with the premium plus v3 and r58 how would you rate this machine ? does it perform the same as the other two machines and produce good shots like the two ?
+Long TianHao Excellent quality shots. This is a heat exchanger, without a PID. So when comparing it straight to the R58 and Premium Plus, we need to remember that. Because of the temperature control you get with the higher end models, in theory you will be able to pull a better shot. But it really depends on the barista! Thanks for watching!
heya, great review! so i bit the bullet and got this beast, but now, how do i use that pressure gauge to my advantage? is it just something i shouldn't pay too much attention to? i do the whole 20 min warmup (usually hits 1 bar around 10 mins in) and 5s cooling flush before every drink, should i just cover that pressure gauge with a piece of paper? i'm quite a noob, so i don't quite know what this pressure really means to me;\, everywhere i read, people talk about 8-9 bars, but why's this hovering at 1? thanks
The gauge on this machine is reading the boiler pressure. The gauge that you are reading about is one that reads brew pressure. 8 or 9 bar is the ballpark pressure for brewing.
It is a heat exchanger. A little different than a single boiler. Check this out: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/blog/2009/03/01/heat-exchange-vs-double-boiler/
I love this and thought it was perfect for me until I saw a review for the "Profitec Pro 700. I don't see that you sell that one, but if you get it in, I would like your expert review comparing these two. Thank-you
Hey SCG! I have been looking for a quality home espresso machine that will last. I am currently looking at a Breville Dual Boiler or the Rocket Appartamento. can't make a decision. Would you recommend one over the other or a different option that is better under $1500.00?
Appartamento for durability and classic Italian styling (and a bit steeper learning curve). Dual Boiler for new technology and user-friendly features and automatic settings. Ultimately up to you and what features you're looking for :)
i love it but i need expobar. i have the future that i can choose 1200 or 2400 watts running at athe same time. i have some costumers with electric generators with specific watts...so expobar will do the job
Hi Eduardo, we would not suggest this for a coffee shop use. It is not NSF certified, and is not built to handle even light commercial use, so it will encounter more issues than if it’s used in a standard home setting brewing 2-5 drinks per day. Feel free to contact our commercial department to figure out the right machine for you - 866.372.4734
This machine is only good to make 2 - 5 drinks per day ? That is all ? That means this machine is a lot of money per cup of coffee. I thought these were light commercial machines and could be used in ssmall restaurants coffee shops.
I own a small bar and we are looking for a small coffee machine that can handle making estimated 50 cups of coffee a day. Space is a premium so if this machine could handle that it would be ideal. Do you think this machine is suited to that low volume commercial use?
This is actually good for home use just for yourself. But if you are opening a coffee shop it's best to get a decent one you see in most coffee shops. I am no coffee expert but I am a partial enthusiast and I think investing in a good one will be worth it
@@turbothrottletrouble4217 thanks for feedback. Is not a coffee shop to be honest, it's a bar and bottle shop so beer is very much the main offering. The current machine does about 30 coffees a day, 10 for staff and about 20 for customers who are with their beer guzzling friends but not partaking. I wouldn't expect numbers to increase by much in the near future. As such I'm wondering if a full on commercial machine is over kill, both with space and cost.
Great video! This is an interesting price point and feature set- can you guys do a video with your opinions on how it stacks up to the next 2 models in the Rocket line up? Cellini and Gioto? If space was not important would it still be a better choice than the others? thanks!
Also how about comparison with Breville Dual Boiler? Similar in price, even though very different in features (semi-manual vs manual). To test the difference in steam pressure and coffee quality? Looking for new videos, keep up the good work!
Depends on how often you brew. Rocket does not recommend leaving the machine on for 8-10 hours since it is only made for home use. I would say 20-30 minutes, the longer the better. I don‘t do less than 15 min with my Appartamento
This is probably one of the most ideal machines to have for me. It's still in the thousands but it has most of the features of machines much more expensive than this while giving you very comparable performance. Would love to own this but for now I'm gonna have to be stuck with my ec pro! Lol
Looks great, and i am hooked on your Videos. I am still doing my research, but want to buy now :) questions: what is more important for a good smooth shot, the temperature control of a PID, or the stability of the e61 Brew head? I have narrowed it down to the cc1, Rancilio with PID, or this beauty.... Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Actually, I see others have mentioned the Breville Dual Boiler which I was wondering about as well. Could you do a comparison video between the two machines?
I think this could be my next machine after my Breville BES830xl bites the dust. I've always loved the build quality and appearance of Rocket's machines, but the price has usually been too much for me to swallow. This might just work!
Hey SCG! You guys are so cool! Thanks for the great reviews you make, you are so knowledgeable. Based on this review I bought the Rocket Appartamento (in Copper!!!) and it's a fantastic machine, I love it! I have one issue with it though. The boiler pressure never goes up more than 1 bar. It sits somewhere between 0.9 and 1 bar. I can see the green zone is between 1 and 1.5 bars and I would like to have it set somewhere in between... maybe 1.2? Do you know how i can do that? I can see a screw on the pressure stat when you take the machine apart. Is that what I need to adjust? Thanks a lot, Victor
Hello! Congrats on the copper Appartamento! Woohoo! That screw on the pressure stat is what you will adjust, but do so in very small increments. It is OK, for your machine to be at .9 bar, but if you want more steam pressure and hotter brew water, adjusting it up to 1.1, 1.2 would do that for you. Hope that helps! Cheers!
Hi Gale Hi SCG i'm Antonio i am 13 years old and am trying to start my own business (mostly at farmers markets) what would be the best machine for me with the lowest possible price I also really like the apartamento but is a bit out of budget
I'm about ready to sell my customized La Pavoni Millenium Europiccola (with the eagle, gauge, bottomless portafilter, Gaggia stainless Pannarello and two steam tips) and trade up to this! This is A M A Z I N G!!
This is really nice. I'm in the unusual position that money is not the main issue but rather the counter-top space. I'm looking at either this machine or the Profitec Pro 300 (I know you don't have Profitec machines so maybe you won't be able to answer this). Which one of those would you recommend? Perhaps you have yet another machine to recommend other than those two? My main issue with the Profitec is that it's so god damn ugly, lol :D Appartamento wins there, hands down!
+Seattle Coffee Gear It's definitely one sexy machine! Just a bit worried about copper boiler (instead of stainless steel) and non-insulated boiler. Would've been nice with a shot-timer PID. Gah, decisions decisions decisions....!
Thank you for such an in-depth review, Gail. I have decided to purchase the Apartemento! For me, it's all about that feeling of direct connection with the machine. Rocket has enhanced this connection by the use of the lever and not a brew button. Oh and did I mention it's absolutely stunning! My only suggestion is that they add a pressure gauge at the group head. I understand it is their entry level model but I don't think adding another gauge would be too expensive. Knowing pressure at the group head is also helpful in seeing if there is an issue with your extraction. Although I suspect perhaps there may be an issue with placement on such a compact machine. oh and I'm totally on #TeamCopperCutOut :-)
+Seattle Coffee Gear quick question, im generally new to espresso machines. waht would be that comparables with this, the slayer brand and the la marzocco? thanks so much. ill continue watching😊
Great video. I have a QuickMill Silvano and am considering this. 2 questions: 1) Is it a real E61 group head? One of the commenters suggests the real E61 doesn't have a solenoid valve, but rather a manual one. And I guess 1a) would be, does it do the pre-infusion? I guess that's the main selling point of the E61. 2) What Counter Culture beans are you using? I'm a fan of them for drip, but didn't know they have an espresso blend. They advocate that any coffee can be brewed any way, but I've never had a really good single-origin espresso. Thanks!
Hi Jeff, yes -- it's a real deal E61. It does pre-infusion using the pressure from the boiler. We're using the CC Big Trouble beans here -- great for espresso with lots of tasty chocolate and nutty notes. It's actually a blend of Peru, Papua New Guinea, and Timor beans. Hope that helps :D
Hi there! This is the Rocket Fausto! You can find more information about this here grinder: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/rocket-espresso-macinatore-fausto-grinder"
Bigger drip tray for a home machine means more chance of forming a new life in the drip tray unless you use the machine more than the average joe.
+Stefan Sigfinnsson Ding Ding!
Stefan Sigfinnsson who is joe?
Or unless you clean it more often. There is nothing stopping anyone from emptying and cleaning a larger drip tray as often as they need

Id be very interested in this too. I dont think they sell Bezzera so unlikely to see
The Bezzera has no E61, so it’s already an inferior unit. All luxury Italian machines must have E61 group

heya, great review! so i bit the bullet and got this beast, but now, how do i use that pressure gauge to my advantage? is it just something i shouldn't pay too much attention to? i do the whole 20 min warmup (usually hits 1 bar around 10 mins in) and 5s cooling flush before every drink, should i just cover that pressure gauge with a piece of paper? i'm quite a noob, so i don't quite know what this pressure really means to me;\, everywhere i read, people talk about 8-9 bars, but why's this hovering at 1?
thanks
The gauge on this machine is reading the boiler pressure. The gauge that you are reading about is one that reads brew pressure. 8 or 9 bar is the ballpark pressure for brewing.
Can you please do a CR comparison between the Appartamento and the Oscar II? Thanks
Previous rocket machines have some sort of insulation on their boilers. Is there a reason why the APPARTAMENTO doesn't have that.
+A- Man If we were to guess, space and cost were probably two factors that influenced that decision.
+ Seattle Coffee Gear Thanks for the feedback.
one sexy rocket!! still would love to see a dual manometer and insulated boiler doesn't cost much but value added!! is that the 2 hole steam tip?
+Daniel Y 2 hole steam tip!
Great video Gail! I'm wondering, if it is a single boiler machine, how come that you can steam milk and pull a shot of espresso at the same time?
It is a heat exchanger. A little different than a single boiler. Check this out: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/blog/2009/03/01/heat-exchange-vs-double-boiler/
Thanks! Now I understand! :-)
Excellent review - Many thanks !
I love this and thought it was perfect for me until I saw a review for the "Profitec Pro 700. I don't see that you sell that one, but if you get it in, I would like your expert review comparing these two. Thank-you
the profitec is basicly an expencive rocket clone :P
CR review between the Rocket Appartamento and Rocket R58 (or model in between?)
Hi SCG, thanks for the review it's so helpful. I got a question about brew pressure. Is it 9 bars?
Thanks for watching! And yes, it brews at 9 bars
The temperature of the coffee is 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the Apertamento Rocket not heated
LOL NOT
How long does it take to heat the water up from cold?
i love it but i need expobar. i have the future that i can choose 1200 or 2400 watts running at athe same time. i have some costumers with electric generators with specific watts...so expobar will do the job
does this is a good choice for a new coffee shop, i mean a commercial use ?
Hi Eduardo, we would not suggest this for a coffee shop use. It is not NSF certified, and is not built to handle even light commercial use, so it will encounter more issues than if it’s used in a standard home setting brewing 2-5 drinks per day. Feel free to contact our commercial department to figure out the right machine for you - 866.372.4734
This machine is only good to make 2 - 5 drinks per day ? That is all ? That means this machine is a lot of money per cup of coffee. I thought these were light commercial machines and could be used in ssmall restaurants coffee shops.
Hope they answer this.
very much agreed thats why i bought it
h
Would you use this for a small coffee trailer?
Which coffegrinder is this in the video? Mazzer mini?
Great video! This is an interesting price point and feature set- can you guys do a video with your opinions on how it stacks up to the next 2 models in the Rocket line up? Cellini and Gioto? If space was not important would it still be a better choice than the others? thanks!
Bought it and lovin' it!!! Don't know why anyone needs fancy electronics...
i am using a water tank that filters out my water would that be ok
Also how about comparison with Breville Dual Boiler? Similar in price, even though very different in features (semi-manual vs manual). To test the difference in steam pressure and coffee quality? Looking for new videos, keep up the good work!
+Ruslan Temniuk Cheers! Yes- several comparisons in the works. Stay tuned! Thanks for watching!
hi , is the plastic water tank BPA free? thx
Thoughts on the Ikawa home roaster?? I'm thinking of getting one but I need Gail's opinion on it first!
+Macejam We haven't had a chance to play with it! The only home roaster we are familiar with is the Behmor! :D
Should I turn it off every time after using it? and how long it takes to pull first shot after turning it on?
Depends on how often you brew.
Rocket does not recommend leaving the machine on for 8-10 hours since it is only made for home use.
I would say 20-30 minutes, the longer the better. I don‘t do less than 15 min with my Appartamento
WOW! This looks like a great machine! I might need to treat myself! Thanks guys
+dj impulse Thanks for watching! gph.is/Vx1oZu
Hellow guys!! Love your reviews Gail!!! Have you haver hear about the Saeco SE50 Espresso Machine??
What type is espresso beans do you use?
This is probably one of the most ideal machines to have for me. It's still in the thousands but it has most of the features of machines much more expensive than this while giving you very comparable performance. Would love to own this but for now I'm gonna have to be stuck with my ec pro! Lol
+Jakeishness There is always an upgrade in the future! ;D
+juan colato Profitec Pro 300 is also another machine to consider :)
Is there an option to change the two hole steam tip to four hole steam tip?
Yes! We sell an accessory set of steam tips on our website: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/rocket-espresso-accessory-steam-tips-set-of-four
Actually, I see others have mentioned the Breville Dual Boiler which I was wondering about as well. Could you do a comparison video between the two machines?
+Logan Krupa You got it!
hi nice machine ca you do a rocket appartamento vs nuova simonelli ocar ii
thanks for the review
+MssCrochetLover You got it!
+Seattle Coffee Gear thank you very much 💕
So if i want to make 1 fast cofee do i need to wait 20min until boiler get proper temp?
Warmeater ....jepp...
Get yourself a Kuireg if all you want is fast cofffee.
I think this could be my next machine after my Breville BES830xl bites the dust. I've always loved the build quality and appearance of Rocket's machines, but the price has usually been too much for me to swallow. This might just work!
+Logan Krupa We are loving the price point this machine comes in at :D
What’s a good grinder for this machine?
hi
is it ok to keep the rocket appartemento at on status all day 24/7?
or switch it off at night?
switch it off, they are not made to be on all day.
the rubbers will dry up, and it will warm up in 20 mins max
GearsW when I switch it off do I have to empty the boiler or anything? If so how?
Felix Wiesbauer no just flip the switch
Thanks a lot,
Victor
Cheers!
Thanks a lot guys!
Scheduled delivery by EOD this Friday. Can't wait!!!!!!
+Mikeprican Woohoo! ;D
Will it run with distilled water?
I swear Gail you make it look better, don't need a machine but would purchase one just because of you.................
Ahhhh ;D
Hi Gale Hi SCG i'm Antonio i am 13 years old and am trying to start my own business (mostly at farmers markets) what would be the best machine for me with the lowest possible price I also really like the apartamento but is a bit out of budget
Antonio Gamberg I would like to start my own business two I am 12 I was looking at the Ascaso Dream up it looks cool
good luck bro and dont forget to follow your dreams
I would love it in my kitchen
I'm about ready to sell my customized La Pavoni Millenium Europiccola (with the eagle, gauge, bottomless portafilter, Gaggia stainless Pannarello and two steam tips) and trade up to this! This is A M A Z I N G!!
Does anyone know how long this machine takes to heat up?
30 minutes is a good rule of thumb
Is there a PID option for the Apartmento?
There is not.
+Tanax13 Looks and function- we'd go with the Appartamento :D
+Seattle Coffee Gear It's definitely one sexy machine! Just a bit worried about copper boiler (instead of stainless steel) and non-insulated boiler. Would've been nice with a shot-timer PID. Gah, decisions decisions decisions....!
OK that was one of SCG's best videos ever! I need one of these (with copper!). Sold! :)
The white is so much nicer, don’t go for the copper, that’s a cheesy look. Stay elegant and go white
What kinda pump does it have? Where inside is it?
Vibration pump
nice! I've had my evoluzione for about 5 years. great machine :)
I worry about that coffee puck, taking it out to do the flush, looks like you unsettled the puck which would cause channelling.
Although I suspect perhaps there may be an issue with placement on such a compact machine. oh and I'm totally on #TeamCopperCutOut :-)
haha love it! Thanks for watching!
Yes!!, i have been waiting for this :D
+lens redemption Woo hoo!
love this. ty gail
Cheers! Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
Jeff G it does a pre infusion. she talks about it in the comparison video with the Simonelli Oscar ii
Awesome, thanks. I ended up pulling the trigger on a QuickMill Anita - but the Appartamento looks terrific. 😺
What grinder is that? Thanks!
Hi there! This is the Rocket Fausto! You can find more information about this here grinder: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/rocket-espresso-macinatore-fausto-grinder"
thanks to this video i know own the rocket appartamento
no insulation on the boiler? :(
