      Dear Mr Gupta,
Would you consider reconsidering your price point for subscription charges? Times of India is charging Rs 799 a year. The economic times is charging Rs 1440.The Hindu is charging Rs 1199 a year. You on the other hand are charging five to six times as much per year ( 5000 rupees a year.). Your paper is excellent, but I feel that you are missing out on a lot of subscribers who engage in comparison shopping. Even for a print subscription, Rs 5000 a year comes to around 13 rupees a day, which would be pretty high for a hard copy broadsheet.Your price point for a purely online subscription is in about the same as the New York Times, and pretty close to the price band of the Economist, both of which have considerable value additions in terms of book reviews , arts etc and a much stronger stable of worldwide correspondents. Perhaps you could ask your marketing staff to do a survey of the market. After all, as you've repeatedly said, data matters.
      Sincerely

Orr you could divide all the employees at "The Print" in different groups and plan live sessions with each group in the days to come. One group this week...next group may be in next week and so on and so forth. This way we could interact with them live.

Great Video Sir. Just had a wild thought. China taking such huge steps, could result from some intimate knowledge of Covid-19 and it's future trajectory which other countries do not, and knowing what will be the result in the long term. For example they know this epidemic is not gonna go away for a very very long time and will get worse, and eventually the world share markets will stop their bullish run and collapse. They're just getting ahead of it, along with bringing in communist reforms which in such an environment will be good for their citizens and companies.

As much as we hate the Chinese and CCP, we must learn from the long-term outlook the Chinese have. Meanwhile in India, it feels as if the government is living in its own fantasy world where everything it does is for the present (especially before major elections) with no real long term planning. Be it Demonetization or Lockdown, they all missed accounting for long-term consequences.

Ever heard of the "Great leap forward"? The CCP is no stranger to blunders and lack of LT planning. However, they have the ability to hide mistakes using "Tiananmen square" methods. India is a complex country that requires consensus because like it or not everyone carries a "veto" power here hence the "Eid relaxations" of Kerala or the "Farmer" protests. Only the good-old-fashioned American capitalism is the right way for India. It will take time. Rome was not built in one day after all. Also, we missed most of our opportunities in the 80s.

I vaguely remember seeing an episode of Prannoy Roy's weekly show "The world this week" on Doordarshan. This was during the early days of China's economic liberalisation and the show featured a story on this. There was a Chinese commentator there (sorry, cannot recall who and cannot recall the exact comment) who said something like this - China is not becoming a capitalist society or a democracy with this economic liberalisation. But it is certainly providing much bigger cages for the birds to fly much more freely while still remaining caged.
That was indeed an insightful and prophetic observation done more than 2-3 decades ago.

I own BABA stocks. However, I cannot blame these new regulations by the CCP as 1. They don't want businesses to dictate affairs in their country, 2. They want regulations against monopolies, to encourage competition, and 3. They want to control education/ health/ real estate costs to reduce the burden on households and encourage families to have more children to ensure future productivity. I think these are all essential measures, as have been implemented by the US at different stages, over its past 2 centuries. China just has to fast forward due to its superfast pace of growth. The Chinese education system is the best in the world. India should learn from them how to develop our education system. An ( IITian) brother of mine who is a dean of a top American STEM university tells me: Were Indians used to dominate a generation back today Chinese students beat their classmates from all over the world hands down. If the Chinese are modifying their Education system it would be worth studying and learning from them rather than counting how much money their tech companies have lost. In China, National interest is paramount and not the interests of some businessmen indulging in making money from education like in India.

Who would not want that? A lot of money has been made in the Chinese markets over time, and a reset in valuations and expectations erases, for now, a small portion of that total amount. Ridiculous valuations everywhere globally because of zero rates and unending QE in the developed world - policy driven actions are everywhere you look. It's a vicious cycle. They have less wages so family can afford to have only one child which the government wanted. Now they want more children but they don't want to increase wages. So majority of families can't afford to have more children. They can't work on increasing wages as their cheap products can't be manufactured with increased production costs. So they are working on signalling to people that having more children is affordable as there will be no profit making in education. We need to see if this will work or not. If it doesn't work, they'll bring compulsory two children policy in the next few years. They are good at forcing people to have number of kids which the state considers appropriate.

You are absolutely correct. Unlike democratic countries there is so much of inequality among the people's.
Just on the attack of edutech companies, China's aim is to give everyone the chance to further education. In India like Malaysia, education has become too expensive. China wants education to be affordable to everyone.
In doing this, families will start having more than one child.
In the same owning homes & housing will also become affordable for everyone.
I don't consider China a Communist country like what the US wants us to believe. They are socialist incorporating the age old Chinese ideals.
Malaysia, India and all the democratic countries can learn something from China.
They want a better life for their citizens. Not like our governments where the richer become richer.
I live in a country where we are living with Malaysians who are of Chinese descent and I know how they apply there Chinese ideals in their life.Almost all the democracies in the world including India have no first hand knowledge of how the Chinese thinks.
    Cheers, George Das

Despite the potential of technology to reach higher scales at a lower cost, the net cost of digital coaching has increased over the time, now it's more than the person-to-person tutoring. There can be a case-study on this, how economies of scale in ed-tech business led to higher cost to consumers.

Look at the inequality on everything from food cloth home amenities etc. If their population is satisfied with the above then they are projecting a strong soft power in the name of communism.
