It's funny how Dunkey is upset by the skips in story, but after playing so many DBZ games I was pretty relieved they sped it up so you can get to the new stuff waaaaay faster.
In the original budokai tenkaichi since switching mid fight wasn't a thing yet, the story mode was a total nigthmare, by the 6th battle with Nappa after like 4 saibamen fights I started to question if I even like the anime

For those complaining for the lack of story play dbz kakarot it’s story heavy and has rpg elements purely single player fun. But for those like me that has seen dbz’s story a thousand times thru manga/anime/games this sparking zero’s episode battle is a perfect recap for what happened then just jump back to online battles

People tend to treat joke reviews as real criticism then which is funny cause he couldn't get past the first Vegeta Boss or learn how the combat works like a games journalist. The character campaigns aren't story modes either, they are a fight-by-fight run of each character.

Power level inflation, combat that mostly looks the same in the first eps and in the last ones after 100s of eps of supposedly exponential escalation. Power growth felt genuine in DB(though Goku was OP from the start), but only a handful of eps in DBZ are just as good. Yes, there are good parts, but so much brain-numbing filler in between, with characters just telling each other the news of what is happening elsewhere or goku sleeping/training for a dozen of eps. FFS I want my time back.
The real charm of this game is the what-if scenarios. The game assumes you know Dragon Ball so it doesn't bore you with what you've already seen. Instead, it puts everything into insane alternate story lines that you can trigger through combat.
sorry for the long comment in advance. I agree but i gotta say that i'm not totally satisfied. I finished Goku's story mode. there are some alternate endings to some certain fights, which is kinda fun but overall unimporant and as much as you go on with the story, the what-ifs get less and less interesting. The good what-if parts for goku were only 2...and he is the main character so sadly i think that there aren't a lot of those cool what-ifs. such a shame because i had a lot of fun on the alternate paths in which they clearly put a lot of effort.
I appreciate that even the game is aware of how many versions of Goku there are. Not only do the Girl Talk dialogues acknowledge it, but there's also some hidden interactions between all of the different Gokus and Goku look-alikes (example Turles, Goku Black and Bardock) on the character select screen that comment on how many there are. It's pretty funny.
I still can't believe the games still use Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan when everyone and the anime has been saying "Super Saiyan Blue" for like 5 years at this point.

If you want a comprehensive retelling of the story, go for DBZ Kakarot This game exists to be a Dragon Ball simulator and succeeds at it with flying colors. I really respect how it knows we've all played the same stories over and over and doesn't retread all the same ground

OG dragonball dub isn't accurate to the OG, and it has a bunch of filler, dbz kai doesn't even cut enough filler, and the differences between the super manga and the super anime is ridiculous. The goku black arc being the better in the manga but the TOP being better in the anime is laughable.
Playing this game with my gf next to me. I know the story, but she's only ever seen the original Dragon Ball. This has become one of my favorite things to do, because she's already invested in the characters and asks why these things are happening. I get to nerd out, explaining all the crazy things that happen, and see her reaction in real-time. By far, our favorite moment was seeing her react to Trunks saying "no cap". Genuinely caught us off guard.
I appreciate the effort they put into little details like making Cabba look like they spent 5 minutes into making his character model to match how ass he looks like in the show

People tend to treat joke reviews as real criticism then which is funny cause he couldn't get past the first Vegeta Boss or learn how the combat works like a games journalist. The character campaigns aren't story modes either, they are a fight-by-fight run of each character.
Release any type of anime game with a fanbase and that's the result you get. Dunkey has made it clear he doesn't really like anime, so this is just a joke parody video people are taking as actual criticism. Sounds about right for anime fans

The difference between Goku Early and Goku Mid is that the symbol on his gi changed. The series opens with him where the "Z" symbol but he switches it to King Kai's symbol after training with him at the end of the Saiyan Saga.

Power level inflation, combat that mostly looks the same in the first eps and in the last ones after 100s of eps of supposedly exponential escalation. Power growth felt genuine in DB(though Goku was OP from the start), but only a handful of eps in DBZ are just as good. Yes, there are good parts, but so much brain-numbing filler in between, with characters just telling each other the news of what is happening elsewhere or goku sleeping/training for a dozen of eps. FFS I want my time back.

The real charm of this game is the what-if scenarios. The game assumes you know Dragon Ball so it doesn't bore you with what you've already seen. Instead, it puts everything into insane alternate story lines that you can trigger through combat.

I agree but i gotta say that i'm not totally satisfied.
I finished Goku's story mode. there are some alternate endings to some certain fights, which is kinda fun but overall unimporant and as much as you go on with the story, the what-ifs get less and less interesting.
The good what-if parts for goku were only 2...and he is the main character so sadly i think that there aren't a lot of those cool what-ifs. such a shame because i had a lot of fun on the alternate paths in which they clearly put a lot of effort.

I appreciate that even the game is aware of how many versions of Goku there are. Not only do the Girl Talk dialogues acknowledge it, but there's also some hidden interactions between all of the different Gokus and Goku look-alikes (example Turles, Goku Black and Bardock) on the character select screen that comment on how many there are. It's pretty funny.

This game exists to be a Dragon Ball simulator and succeeds at it with flying colors. I really respect how it knows we've all played the same stories over and over and doesn't retread all the same ground
That's the vibe I got with story mode. I realized that they know we've seen the story countless times, and the game isn't a story game. It's a pvp game.
It was pitched as a sequel to Budokai Tenkaichi. The PS2 games had better cutscenes than this. I've never seen such textbook definition of fanboyism in my life listening to people defend this game online.

It also re inserts the music that was lost due to licensing in the dub version of his cut. Frankly, its never going to happen, but I am of the opinion dragonballs anime needs a complete redo. OG dragonball dub isn't accurate to the OG, and it has a bunch of filler, dbz kai doesn't even cut enough filler, and the differences between the super manga and the super anime is ridiculous. The goku black arc being the better in the manga but the TOP being better in the anime is laughable.

Playing this game with my gf next to me. I know the story, but she's only ever seen the original Dragon Ball.
This has become one of my favorite things to do, because she's already invested in the characters and asks why these things are happening. I get to nerd out, explaining all the crazy things that happen, and see her reaction in real-time.
By far, our favorite moment was seeing her react to Trunks saying "no cap". Genuinely caught us off guard.

In super he's a bit more chill but I honestly prefer his growth in gt. The fact that he punished his son with just halving his allowance rather than halving his body is insane character growth for him.

Everyone, no matter if you were taught to be "humble," has the human nature of wanting to act out and thinking they're the shit out of a desire to satisfy their own pride and ego, and life repeatedly serves them up an ass whooping as a lesson until they learn to reel in the ego. Marriage and kids help with that too, suddenly it's not all about you anymore. Probably not the bride and brood Vegeta was imagining when his asshole Saiyan family was filling his mind with having a throne to inherit and a whole planet to rule, but what he got was much better for him.

@@Honey_B_River The manga explains it briefly in part 73 so you don't really have to watch that episode unless you're reading the english translation then you gotta watch it unless you only have the japanese dub then you gotta get crunchyroll to watch episode 730 to learn about the secret dragon balls and that will let you understand the lore of episode 3017 better
