Toyota Corolla 2020 [Genting Hill Climb] - 2nd Drive, All By Myself | YS Khong Driving

- The last time I took the Corolla up the hill, there were three big men seated inside. That took its toll on acceleration and handling, because an additional 200 kg ( could have been a bit more than that) weight would have changed the behaviour characteristics somewhat.
This time, I got to really push the Corolla around those same bends, and the difference is huge.
See for yourself how the TNGA really worked: you may think handling is not so imoortant, because you perhaps don't drive so fast - actually a good hamdling car means it is more likely to stay on the road even at lower speeds. It is easier to control, and of course, being comfortable means you are less fatigued at the end of a long journey.
Please enjoy the video, and dont forget to share, and subscribe.
Thank you Mr Khong for the drive review. From the way you seating while throwing corners, can really see you are really well seated and not looked aggressively tossed like most of the cars. Good drive.
Very observant. Yes, proper sitting position is very important. Thanks for your support.
Thank you Mr YS Khong. I can have another enjoying genting run. I like to watch and I never miss. My friends too.
I actually test drove this Corolla quite recently too.its rather pleasent car to drive & perfect everyday car with rather good overall performance.the looks is rather unique & stunning in my opinion.but really not much publicity on this car..otherwise i reckon it might just sell well.good review sir..fully agreed on your input..👍🏼
someone say the car is under power. but look at uncle Ys drive. Wow...the car run so fast..lolz
Uncle YS, this probably one of the best video on your channel, keep it up !!!!!
I like his red myvi drive more ✌️
Yes, Uncle YS is the best.
Hope Collora GR & Yaris GR will coming soon.
Awaring Uncle YS review the above cars.
Car control is in YS Khong’s blood
YS Khong not only a very good driver and reviewer but also infomative channel
Just can't stand the sound of CVT gearboxes, anyways this TNGA platform really does wonders for comfort and handling. Time for the other Japanese makes to offer something similar. Although the car looks a little lethargic, for normal city drive it will be sufficient. Another good review sir, keep it up! 😊👍
Scream like crazy when comes to corner! Pretty danger, might skid anytime
I believe it is still better than Honda's CVT (more whinier)
I was waiting for a video like this! Thank You :D
The CVT gearbox is the deal breaker. The car sounds like its struggling. Anyways, another good drive sir!
Just wanted to say that you make the best car videos on SEA. Thank you sir 🙏
Thank you very kindly, sir.
Its good decision to test cars alone, handling is affected by weight of passenger! Nice drive uncle!
Exactly. Good comment, and thanks for your kind support.
All this guy needs is a Helmet and number sticker on the Door ..And a checker Flag...🏁
Its really interesting to watch your review, thank you. Looking forward for you to test drive on the coming 'Toyota Corolla Cross' Mr Khong ..
The lack of grip looks as much fun as driving a sports car 👍🏻
The smile says it all the way from Brunei 🇧🇳
Superb driving skill, uncle 😁
The car is fantastic esp during the first and second corner. It's balance!
'That's a good reminder for people who are always wandering through lanes.'
Fortunately, I have my own senses (sensors) to avoid these people. =D
Feel proud for my corolla after saw this video haha
I own 2.0v spec from previous gen. End up buying it because it is so comfortable to drive. But, it handles well too not to mazda 3 or civic level but acceptable for normal driver. From the video, I wondered how much TNGA improves the ride by the looks of his smile. Looks like uncle ys had poisoned me to buy another corolla.
The ride comfort remains while the handling improves a lot.
Love to see that back view mirror whether those cars he passed want to take on him or not. haha
Toyota is the best !!!!😁
👍👍Ada hatchback corolla kat aussie ,cantik ooo
best reviews ever!!! never too technical for me!! like your videos!!
oh and by the way you know how to drive a car wow!!!
Corolla love
I like previous model dashboard.
I can see that the car's suspension had been tuned for comfort. There wasn't much vibration from the camera that I can see unlike some other cars uncle reviewed before. Still amazing to see that it handles well in corners.
That is the beauty of tnga platform.
Woww..betol2 mcm rally mode u drive uncle 😅👍👍 nice review uncle with nice car 👍👍😁
Love it.. really an enjoyable drive.
This Corolla is good car, but UMW cut the spec. Especially the meter and the touch screen unit, if they can redesign for it, this car will have a quality interior as Mazda 3
uncle i hope you giving rating stars on every end of the video for every car like : handling, power and comfort
WoW.. it cornered sharp and agile. The only thing was the torque need +/- 200-250nm atleast.
You are quite right. A 1.5 turbo qould make this car heavenly. I suppose it may happen soon, but in its current form, it can be also very enjoyable. Go to work Monday to Friday, and still have fun on weekends.
When you see a 50 year old smile like that !
You know that Corolla is damn good!!
Hahaha. Thanks, so who is the 50 year old?
@@YSKhongDriving hahaha ha
Here in the Philippines we have the 1.8 Hybrid version that can do 15km/l even on heavy 15km/h traffic. Costs about 31k USD tho
That is cheap compared to what we have to pay here. The 1.8 non-hybrid costs around USD34k already here.
Come to Singapore to see the car prices ...u will faint 😂😂
Awaiting uncle to drive Ciollora GR soon. Hope ut will be available in Malaysia soon.
This is fantastically done by YS. I didn't know Corolla can do that. This seems almost as good n direct as Mazda 3. YS really bring out the car potential.
One question, does this TNGA Corolla handles better than a VW Passat? Not outright power, just handling aspect. I saw both video and it seems to go faster on this Corolla than the 2020 Passat. And no video on driving about 2019 Passat.
The Passat is a larger car than the Corolla, in terms of total time to do the climb, I would say the Passat is probably faster around the corners and would have a highr top speed. The Corolla is very agile, and can potentislly go just as fast, but does not have the torque up the hill. Going down, it would probably be just as fast, but would lose out on the straights. They are two very different cars, and righly the Passat should be compared to Camry.
Really wish that toyota could provide the corolla with a dynamic force engine with 8 speed automatic gearbox.
I wish UMW bring in the AUris
You sir, can make driving an under-powered car seems fun. Even though u drove fast, i can see that u were behaved, unlike any other reviewers in Malaysia, driving at the same place. I can felt their rudeness.
BTW sir, u have to try to put your microphone at the same location in each review, and at the same volume/settings too. Looks like Civic's CVT is more whiny (whinier?) than the Corolla. And I can feel (hear?) the paddle shift in this Corolla is a little faster to respond than the Civic.
Planning on booking this Corolla, but have been told no more stock for this year.
Agree....from indonesia here...some YTers here like to take the left lane / shoulder when taking over and they think thats the correct way to drive with no regard for speed limit and no understanding of safe distance either...and yet they call themselves expert drivers...
Wang Mat, when you went for booking ya? :( yes, seems like hard to get due to high booking volume.
@@dineshong7498 Hi, I booked on 31st Oct. Huhu. Quite late. I called several showrooms, no stock. Just placed the booking and have to wait. Most probably can get it next year. My color of preferences is quite difficult to get (black), according to the SA. It is not due to high booking volume, it is because of Thailand. We have to take turn among countries in SEA to get, AND because of the pandemic as well. That is what I've been told.
I guezz this Altis is not the updated year 2020 version which has larger 9 inch infotainment with apple carplay and android auto.
This was the launch version, same as the car we drove up the first time last year.
Centre infotainment unit seems too high mounted. Distracting driving view.
Sifu driving style. I will poop my self if in in the car. 😅 . But good review. Thanks
Good car for every day use, but not for me as the CVT droning drives me nuts. Same with my other cars with CVT.
Hi YS, May I suggest to add in an additional camera on your speedometer so we could see the changes as you drive in future? Thank you
Good suggestion, but we stopped doing that a long time ago. Too many keyboard moralists amd trolls who have nothing better to do.
@@YSKhongDriving Haha...understood. Thanks for your reply YS. Still an enjoyable watch
And I recommend to all my friends. You drive courteously too not like other genting run driver.
Thanks.
Other? You mean one of the RUclipsr who drove a Corolla and scream "this is a Toyota, I am a bigger company than you!!" to a BMW. I know he's joking, but I never liked his driving style.
Would you do a video on the Toyota Vios? Other reviewers have tried it up Genting, but would much prefer to see your drive in it :) Love your videos and inputs
We do have rhe video here on this channel.
@@YSKhongDriving No test drive up Genting :( only comparison in the showroom with the Yaris.
Boss unker...simple question, this or Mazda 3? Your take, because you are the master...Thanks.
Hard choice.
@@YSKhongDriving Marketing aside...your honest opinion. Which will you choose? You look very spirited in this drive though. haha
I was also contemplating between the two but my logical choice is still leaning towards Altis more. 🤣
@@hoshuliang The way he was driving he seemed slightly more enthusiastic than the Mazda 3 on the other run. The Mazda 3 is another 20Gs more though. Still waiting for his answer 😂
@@pskaki altis or corolla is more comfortable overall despite being able to handle well(mostly due to excellent chassis) while the mazda is on the firmer side of things, although still comfy..but i believe mazda has a plusher, more high quality interior.
2:56 Khong, Malaysia version of this Corolla is using the old CVT. It is not the Direct-shift CVT. This one doesn't has the launching gear.
I checked and you arr correct. The direct shift will come in with the new model. I was given wrong information. Sorry. But the gbox behaved very well, nevertheless.
@@YSKhongDriving The "New Model"? Corolla with TNGA engine (high compression) and direct shift CVT is coming to Malaysia soon?
Hi great reviews which did you prefer driving the corolla sedan or the corolla cross
I am okay with both. They shortened the wheelbase to give the same handling.
Uncle can drive to genting blindfold by now..
Hopefully 1day can watch video of uncle khong with heavy tune car up genting.. Ek9, evo, subbie, gtr, rx7 etc
Toyota should really consider adding a supercharger to the APEX/ GR variant of Corolla imo instead of only making change to the appearance *IMO*
Maybe a 1.6 turbo? Or 1.5 like the Yaris. That would be awesome.
@@YSKhongDriving Yes just like one of the GR Yaris, that car goes to 200 kmh real quick, I often question why people opt for Corolla instead of 1.5T Civic when Civic is much faster, reliability perhaps?
it handles pretty good. definetly they focused on handling as well. how do you compare this corollas suspension to civic ?
Suspension is premium like most toyotas, with regards to the civic even vios is more pliant and planted during corners...shame on honda, i own one n after 5 years it become rubbish thus need to change~ it’s expensive but what to do...
The only points that make me choose honda rather than a toyota is because of its light steering n comfort, spacious, good looks inside n out, sporty styling cues, n most importantly the engine n transmision is top notch for a cvt..but unfortunately the thrill ride n handling is sub par compared to this tnga platform~ should u go for civic, cash out some mods to its suspension n cassis support then u get a perfect c segment car on the market~ gudlux! 👍🏻
YS u shd try taking the Skoda Octavia RS245 up... Good car to try
We don't have that car here. The last Octavia I drove was about 10 years ago, and that was the 200hp model then.
hope you can review and try to drive the Toyota Corolla Cross (non-hybrid) in comparison with Honda HRV... more power YS Khong..
prefer the non-hybrid toyota corolla cross variant review if already available there in Malaysia..
I hear it will be here soon.
Thank you for your review, Sir. Quick question: what about CVT overheating/malfunctioning/breaking because of these intense uphill exercises? I've read a lot about Toyota CVT transmissions do not like high revs combined with steep hill climbs. How reliable are these transmissions when used in mountain countries, what's your verdict? Many thanks in advance.
If they get a little hot, there is a sensor that detects a high temp- this will trigger a safety awitch that will put the vehicle in limp mode. When the temperature cools down again, then everything goes back to normal. The system will never allow the temp to go higher than allowed, so you dont ha e to worry.
@@YSKhongDriving thank you so much! All noted and clear! By the way - I totally love your videos. Keep up the great work! Cheers from Austria!
hello uncle, does previous gen of Altis has 1st physical launch gear too?
No
In terms of Comfort and handling as compare to a BMW 3 series can you comment the difference Uncle Khong? Thank you
I feel anxious 😂 uncle drive so fast sia
Me too.
uncle will like to see r35 kill climb haha
CRT MONITORS in a car? its year 2020, not year 2000........
Crt monitor 😂
I find that body roll seems to be more obvious in this Corolla drive as compared to the earlier Civic drive by uncle.
Agree...can hear the tyre screeching sound around the bend
And wonder why no turbo ....
This car is more for comfort.
VVT-i engine scream really loud once we downshift, i don't think tht noise coming from the exhaust.. this is based on my experience driving a vios 2019
Actually it is coming out when we accelerate. It's an auto, remember.
This uncle can drive hey
Mr YS, how is the new Proton S70 compared to this since you just put out the S70 genting climb video.
The new S70 is a great vehicle: it is a bit more powerful and is a hreat package: it is very different from the Corolla and the Corolla is a very different vehicle, having its own good points.
@@YSKhongDriving Wow thanks Mr YS for answering my question. One last question Mr YS, Do you think the S70 is at least 80% as comfortable as this Corolla Altis during the climb?
Thanks. Is the steering wheel harder than its competitors? Does it have smooth feeling?
Kind regards
It felt very normal to me.
Hi Mr YS Khong, between Honda Civic RS, Toyota Corolla, & Camry, which would you recommend?
It depends on your needs and your budget. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, and there is a big difference in cost.
Its nice to see u enjoy driving as most Malaysians drive and rage at the same time hhahaha
Thank you. Always liok at the bright aide of things. That way life is much better. Thanks for your support
If only UMW would give us the 2.0 Dynamic Force engine with the direct shift CVT. Would be much better. How would you compare it with handling of the Civic?
Very similar but Civic tcp is faster. The Corolla would probably be faster than the 1.8 Civic, due to cornering speed.
Can you do a video to teach us how to properly seat in a car. As i known there is a guideline for it. Sorry if i am misinformation.
Coming.
Uncle, I have a dilemma, what is your take for sheer comfort on highway/long distance journey, mazda3 or corolla?
Both are very close. The Mazda 3 would have a bit more power, and the Corolla would be a bit more comfortable. We can sell you either one
Us punya spec mcm2 ada...msuk mlysia jd kureng
Uphill Underpowered la uncle.. Can see it
Actually there is enough power. Anyway, we just do the driving. Up to the audience to judge.
Uncle Khong, did you ever need to use the paddle shifter at all. How responsive are the manual gear changes
What tyres Is the altis using?
I use them to help me shift down for corners in order to keep in the right rev range so I can scoot out under acceleration. I honestly do not know what tyres they are using. Perhaps if you watch our walkaround, I may have mentioned it. The ones on the car are the standard issues, as per factory specs.
@@zeNightshade thanks. Would be better if they came with Michelin PS4
Uncle test drive altis version 2022 pulak.😄🤭😅
2022 and 2021 sama jugak
Just to confirm the altis available in malaysia is direct shift cvt?from what i know is the previous gen cvt..
I have rechecked. We are having the previous gen cvt. I was mistaken.
Song cue:
Allll byyyy myself.....
I'm going Genting,
Alll byyyy myselffffff
(Celine Dion tune)
The car is quite good n nice with dynamic force engine like other country had, but here cut the main part sell u like zzz price, no longer a money value car to buy if feel the interior and engine part as well
How's the handling of this Corolla compared to the Jetta? And Corolla vs the 1 generation older Mazda3(multilink suspension)? Yeah the double wishbone setup opens up a lot of setup possibilities for camber progressions on suspension bound... Which allows Toyota to setup a sweet spot which is awesome for daily driving hence I wanted to know the comparison mentioned earlier. Thank you uncle. Awesome drive as always!
We did another vodep that explains why the tnga helps to improve handling without the need for harsh suspension. This set up allows for a more practical daily drive vehicle.
Teach me how to drive ☺️☺️ btw always drive safe, we love u uncle
Thanks CJ. We will one day have driving tios and lessons, hopefully after this CMCO is over.
Uncle YS, Ride handling comparing this car with Arteon. which one is better?
The Arteon is a D segment, and is of course more luxurious amd comfortable. Ride in the Corolla is good but remember it is C segment. The Corolla also handles well, but it probably needs a bigger wheel and better tyres if it wants to match the Arteon. Best not to compare the two.
hi uncle, which handles better, this or Mazda3? the TNGA-built chassis of the Corolla seems to be full of potential.
Would love to know too
Is TNGA look alike Subaru global plateform? Or they copying each other since they are ?merging?
Toyota owns equity in Subaru.
Good morning uncle
All by myself... I wanna be, All by my self...
Hahaha, one of my favourite songs too!
YS, just check with you what is the speed when doing the 4th corner? The tyre not only roar but scream!
Pretty noisy cabin
That would be the right hand turn where I passed a car just before entry? 2nd gear, about 5000 rpm, perhaps around 70? Not too sure.
@@YSKhongDriving Noted with thanks
why no dynamic force engine, even yaris outside malaysia got dynamic force engine.. such letdown.
Old video
@@YSKhongDriving i know but it was such a big letdown cause they didnt put that engine in low midrange vehicles. Only camry has it for now.
Is there also a Toyote Corolla GR coming ?
Yes, and you can book it through this channel.
Is it as good as lotus ride and handling on Proton Cars?
Much better. This is C segment car, not B
Uncle, will you do a x50 Genting run?
Hopefully. Stay tuned.
1 to 10 how much different is the handling and gear box compare last generation?
Last gen not tnga? I think big big difference 😜
But still same engine and transmission
The new chassis is a huge difference.
damn shiok...
It's good but not that good! Haha know why?
You didn't drink mineral water! Gotcha🎃
Hahaha!
Easy drive no sweat so don't need to drink water
Uncle can you drive a yaris up to genting.
Let's see if we can get a car, after cmco.
Uncle, CVT has gear ratios? I thought they're all 1
They are virtual ratios, set by locking the drive and driven belts at a certain point.
Toyota cross SUV, when test drive toGenting
The video is already on this channel.
Any second hand car shop u recommend ?
Nope.
You are too kind on your review, how's the steering? I don't think it can match the Civic.
Each of the cars have their good points. I can see you like the Civic more. Please watch our Civic videos too and hear and see what we have to say.
@@YSKhongDriving I'm not particularly happy with Civic but the handling is much better, I hope the new corolla did improve on the handling on their latest model.
