This album is what made me feel and understand deathmetal/deathcore, and it's by far my favorite album of all time, the narrative of the album, the music, and just the way it takes you away for up to 78mins, is just so good and I cannot really describe how this album made me feel for the first time hearing it and it blew me away. Also, there is actually no drummer, it's all programmed, which surprised me because the drumming was so tight it just blew my mind. Also this album has about as many views on RUclips as does Masstaden under vatten (just under 300k last I checked) and it's infulance has been pretty gradual over the years, but unforntuately the band broke up after this album, then reformed in 2020, did a live show with a new song from an EP they had annouced was planned for 2021/2022 but sadly there hasn't been any information on the band's facebook page recently about what's going on with the EP/LP that may be attached with Homecoming, the new single.
For the lyrical contents: The base of the story is a pilgrim keeps having dreams which he believes is a sign from God to go on a pilgrimage to The Holy Mountain, so he leaves his home (Exile Part I and II), Stone and Silver I-III are his first & second day of travel where he meets the horned god, and learns of his god given "alternate form" the man of papyrus limbs which is where he comes across the thought that the journey has no value without it being recorded/retold. Westward Bound I and II are him stopping on the second night at a village and having some non believers doubt him. Castle in the Sky Part II is his dream of his life he left for his pilgrimage, Unending Waltz (which Gareth said in a comment was his favorite to write/record) is the pilgrim running across an Oracle of god (the female narrator) who sets him straight of his self doubt and reinforces his idea to finish the pilgrimage to The Holy Mountain. Ash and Rust I-IV is him slowly giving into the his doubt of god and he eventually listens to the devil instead (Part III mostly). Destiny's Fool is him realizing that he was a fool to fall for the devil and professes his mistakes to the listener/god. The Holy Mountain is his climb to the top of the mountain (whether or not he makes it is up to viewer perspective form what I've seen) and then him confessing the point of the whole journey.
extra: the narrator talks about 1000 death/1000 lives, whether or not it's metaphorical or not is up to interpretation, but the overall message of the album (imo obviously) is to speak to a big journey or change in one's life, for me, I had just moved from Ohio living with my parents, to going all the way down to Texas all out on my own with no one I knew within 1000 miles of me, so for me the ablum hit extra hard because I had just went through a big change in my life, and the self doubt, the unsure nature of what's to come that was well portrayed in the album spoke to me very clearly and it was able to allow me to clear my mind of it and be happier as a whole (not just the album, but it marked the turning point). So in the end the album to me speaks to a point in my life where I wasn't fully self-confident and wasn't clear in my thought process and wasn't sure about who I was, to becoming someone I'm proud to be and to have my self-confidence as well as be happier as a whole from self discovery and freedom. The ending part is personal, so for those of you who bothered to read through this, I thank you, since I know I'm not the only this album has helped, but it's a beautiful masterpiece that deserves respect of the quality of work that went into this overall outcome which is something I don't think I can ever forget, and I shall forever hold this in it's own tier of quality that sits just above Vildjharta

This is in my all-time top three albums. Especially when it dropped, this album set the bar, imo. To this day, there are few albums that are as good as this. The album ends and literally EVERYTIME I sit there in silence.
To me, this album is about a person struggling to pursue the Good. Travelling westward is usually a symbol of transition to death. It could be a story about a person dying literally but also a story of the transformation of a person moving through a “death” moment and grappling with what it would take to experience that and come out a better person.
The entire album the protagonist is talking about “his love” and how he doesn’t want to lose her/him. He accepts his journey and then falters again. Eventually he moves to the “holy mountain” which is the final movement which I won’t talk about so you can explore the lyrics and themes from your own perspective.
This album, to me is a true piece of art. It’s challenging musically but also lyrically/thematically cuts deep to Truths.
The unending waltz destroys me- it’s always a smack in the face to get myself together.

Slice The Cake has been my favorite band for as long as I can remember them being out. They got me through a difficult place and I am fanatical about the way they implement their music with raw emotion. Give "The Man With No Face" a listen if you dig the structured sound that the second half of the album brings, I can go on for hours about how talented the three of these guys are and how much they have inspired both music and writing around the world. Sometimes i feel like I'm a quarter of those 16,000 monthly listeners

this album is magnificent. if you’re interested in the narrative, I highly recommend giving it another listen with an extra track added - Odyssey To The Gallows - which takes place before the record and runs for a comfortably quaint 28 fucking minutes. less so progressive metal, more a dark ambient spoken word piece - it adds plenty more haunting images and potent themes to the album. Gaia (formerly Gareth, I believe she/they transitioned since this record) is an absolute fucking master of vocal delivery and deep lyricism. Worth the listen !

Persifone - Consciousness (all 3 parts)
Wintersun - The Forest Seasons (full album)
And, for a really odd pick out of left-field: Heilung - Futha. They aren't rock or metal in the slightest, but if you have a soft spot for really experimental folk music, they're an absolute treat. They've been one of my most frequent plays in the last few months.
I hadn't heard of Odyssey to the West until you uploaded this, but I'm glad it was brought to my attention. Total masterpiece!

Discovered this album in 2017 when I was only about 2-3 years into metalcore and it was the most creative and jaw dropping thing in terms of songwriting I had ever heard up to that point. Then found out that the band had broken up apparently because the members from sweden and australia decided to release this album without Garreth's approval, and he was so upset by this he quit and the band split. And then in late 2019 they reunited and are now a band again working on new music which some of it they released in 2020. @DrewFortune I highly recommend on your own time (Definitely a waste of yt prep work)you check out their other Magnum Opus released 4 days after "Odyssey to the West" titled "Odyssey To The Gallows" which is this super intense 25 minute narrative single told over a wall of eerie Lovecraftian sound. Really interesting, and once again masterful lyric composition.

All I can say about this album is that it is a phenomenal work of art. I recall reading a theory near its release that the lyrics, especially during the second half, were from the perspective of the vocalist. The band was falling apart during the creation of this album, and the vocalist named Gareth Mason (at the time, they now go by Gaia) released the album unfinished without the consent of the other band members--on April Fool's Day no less! So what you have listened to is technically an unfinished project that 2 of the 3 members of Slice the Cake did not want released in its current state. All I can say is thank FUCK it was pushed out behind closed doors. At least one of the other members (the composer I think) wanted to take this album to another band! Unfortunately, earlier this year Gaia, the vocalist, decided they did not want to pursue music any further. After announcing their return, Slice the Cake is once more finished. At least we have this masterpiece as the swan song of a phenomenal band.

когда я случайно обнаружил этих ребят, с первых нот понял что это пушка....альбом-шедевр. Gareth Mason не просто поёт он проживает каждую песню.

such an incredible symbiosis of atmosphere and heaviness. pure mastapiece.
and okay... if you don't want to listen REFLECTIONS, maybe you will pay attention to the 2013 album from After the burial, which is one of the brightest examples of djent/prog metalcore? it's called WOLVES WITHIN, according to your chronology of acquaintance, it should be exactly the next :3

Really dig this! If you like cinematic, check out Ayreon. It’s one guy who does all the music (except drums) and has guest vocalists come play the parts of the characters in the story. My favorite album is “The Human Equation” featuring parts played by Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), Devin Townsend, James Labrie (Dream Theater) and many others. It’s a true prog metal rock opera masterpiece. It’s long, so maybe could be a patreon reaction. If you do it, you have a new patron in me for sure!

I am not a fan of deathy stuff but this is one of my favourite albums. It is just brilliant start to finish, such a raw emotion, and the vocalist is amazing at delivery.
Sadly, this band is no more - the singer had to step down due to the mental health issues., But this album will always stay as one of the most stand out works for me.

there was a bit of drama within the band when this album dropped, so much to the point that they actually ended up splitting once it was put out. It was only somewhat recently that they announced they’d be getting back together for a new project soon

Me and Justin talk quite frequently so I was bound to jump the fuck on this album and me and my friend Drew "the other Drew" were pleaseantly surprised it's on my channel if you want to watch. Favorite Tracks are Stone and Silver Parts I - II, The Dark Carnival, The Holy Mountain
