The terms "progressive" and "deathcore" put together to create a hybrid genre probably causes some anxiety to metal fans, considering deathcore's love/hate relationship with metalheads and the progressive tag being...well the progressive tag. But SLICE THE CAKE crafts something altogether different, here. Sure, Odyssey to the West has deathcore, and its most certainly progressive, but its large-scale story and tremendous creativity make the progressive deathcore tag feel very much like its underselling whats going on here.
Odyssey to the Gallows, which contextually comes before Odyssey to the West, shines through its dramatic poetic reading. Woven with a wall of noise surrounding, its a captivating listen that overwhelms by design in its harshest and most challenging locations. All to help set up the story of The Pilgrim that we hear in Odyssey to the West, and while OttW stays more in the range of the progressive deathcore token, it doesn't portray the demonized deathcore tag the same way those bands principally associated with the genre handle it. This is no Suicide Silence album. This is instead a band sweating blood from a pen, being the scribe of this pilgrim's adventures both in the world, and in his own mind.
I don't know what you would call this. Its building on the hybrid and has taken casualties. Its raised the bar while also raising the game. Better written than a Cradle of Filth album (who always has deeply poetic verse) and tremendously executed (there's even a track that feels like Daniel from Pain of Salvation would be fiercely proud) Slice the Cake deliver a manifesto of music and art that feels like its aim is to make a modern day Odyssey, and believe me, this album is grand enough to just maybe be worthy of that comparison.

Fun Fact: Odyssey to the Gallows is actually their song "Of Gallows" from "The Man with No Face" slowed down to fit 28 minutes.
Source: Gareth, the lead vocalist in the album chat room on the day or release.

You can tell that it was something paul stretched out and it kind of killed the track for me. To say OTTW was so meticulously produced, having OTTG just an old track slowed down seems almost low effort. I would have much rather heard them produce an actual half hour ambient/noise track.

Going to have to disagree with you on the last song. Holy mountain ending was incredibly moving. Hands down my favorite other than Lantern.

+Pseudo Wounds Fissures is actually both Gareth and Jonas, however Gareth also has another music project, Musica Masonica, which is also the name of Gareths RUclips channel.
And yes. Slice The Cake has disbanded.

Dean Kehoe Fissures is still alive, though. This was a few days after they broke up: imgur.com/yKy96dM and imgur.com/6LQNXK2

Actually no. The main guy is Jack Magero. He wrote all the music. He did not give permission for the album to be released and when so when they still released it, he left. And then STC was pretty much done after that.

2021 update for anyone seeing this. Slice the Cake is still around, they were actually supposed to play Live at Tech Death Fest (I think it was that one) but then Covid happened. They still did a live stream of the bands performing in their homes, and you can find Slice The Cakes set here on RUclips, or on their Spotify, where they released their set as an album.

They put out two other extremely good albums over the last few years and their first full length really got me into extreme metal. I'm gonna be sad if they break up after dropping this absolute masterpiece. If you do listen to this album and enjoy it, definitely check out their previous two.

Glad you liked it man. You should read up on the full story of the release. It's kind of crazy how close this album came to not being released. Would have been a tragedy.

Enjoyed this review! Only discovered this album a few months ago but it's a masterfully presented musical journey. I'm much more into metal than deathcore but am absolutely blown away by the storytelling, structure, and range of this work. Appreciated the comparison to Prometheus as well. Great video!

Definitely my favorite album of the last few years. Nice review, and very much agreed on all points except the music swallowing the vocals. It never once bothered me and it felt like an acceptable artistic choice when it happened.
Regardless, thanks for taking a listen to this album and helping to spread the word. This has been one of my favorite bands for many years, and I think they deserve much more recognition for their work.

with periphery's somewhat disappointing release this year, this is probably my top album of 2016, next to what has come out so far with what ever protest the hero's new album is called (i think its tidal but their single song release schedule has made it feel weird).

All of the albums they have put out continue the same story, and odyssey to the gallows bridges the gap from the previous album to odyssey to the west

Wait what?!? I thought gallows and west were a standalone?!
