    Fun fact: Masstadens Nationalsang (under vatten) is full, literally full of similar riffs and references to songs on preceding album, Masstaden, all as callbacks. Vildhjarta are the gods of call backs, my favourites being Kaos2 and Heartsmear, using the same clean section at the end but in vastly different ways.

      Here’s the OG Heartsmear demo from 5 years ago. That clean is in the same tuning as it is in kaos2. They only slowed it and pitched it for the Masstaden UV release. This is genuinely the greatest album I've ever heard. One of the very few times in my life where a single album completely redefined the way I see music. Like...after hearing this nothing is the same anymore. Listen to it over and over again. pay attention to the melodies, because they repeat them all over the place in slightly changed and unexpected ways. Behind every nasty, thicc, chuggy riff theres always a clean thread repeating over and over, solidifying the section, giving continuity to the song that isn't overtly apparent. The whole album feels like something from another dimension, something that's been bent out of time in the most bizarre yet coherent way. I don't know a word of swedish and yet I felt like I understood exactly what the album was going for. No other album has given me this kind of mental imagery. This is a profound tale of loss, sorrow, uncertainty, and friendship. I'm sure of it, and I don't know a single lyric. The repeating melodies and motifs are like recurring characters in a movie, instantly giving you an anchor and a sense of familiarity in the context of unfamiliar, strange, and warped riffs. The original masstaden album is relatively straighforward, headbanger type of album. This album takes a lot of those concepts and twists them into something truly otherworldly. Its the heaviest, darkest, most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

    • @sirdo946
      @sirdo946 2 года назад +18

      Oh if you don't know the lyrics/concept you have no idea how spot on you are with the melodies and motifs being chosen for lyrical moments/parts of the story!
      If you go to the post on Drew's community section where he asked for some info on the album, i dropped a couple of reddit links to a translation of the lyrics (which already highlights the story) and a discussion of the concept/plot based on lyrics and artwork. The music and lyrics fit even better with that in mind

    • @thevishyfishy
      @thevishyfishy 2 года назад +16

      @@sirdo946 Honestly, I could have looked up the translation earlier but I really like the feeling of not knowing any of the lyrics and just letting the music and melodies guide my imagination. It's nice to know that I was generally on the right track and at some point in the future I'll be sure to check out the actual lyric translation. The art of the album and tracks also plays into this a lot. I first listened to this album on a 6 hour flight and I listened to it 3 times all the way thru, and I fell asleep for a few hours. The dreams I had while this album was playing in my ears were absolutely magical, I cannot describe it.
      One of the things I love about the composition of this album is how it plays with your expectations constantly. for example, early in the album you'll hear some progression like Clean Section A -> Heavy Riff A. Later on, they bring back clean section A amidst a storm of chaos, and you latch onto it because its familiar. You feel like you know what's going on, but unlike before it transitions into Heavy Riff B, which is similar to Heavy Riff A but twisted and deformed in some way. It really keeps you on your toes while not completely throwing you off so much that you lose interest. Absolutely genius stuff.

    • @sirdo946
      @sirdo946 2 года назад +8

      @@thevishyfishy Oh yeah if you've listened through it while looking at the artwork then you've probably got quite a bit of an idea of the story! I love how they literally created an audio-visual journey with it, it's incredible. Thankfully i have amazing friends who gave me as a present for my birthday (I'm lucky it was 2 weeks after the album drop lol) the bundle with the CD, a t-shirt and the 2 huge posters with all the track artwork in sequence.
      They're so good i had them framed and they're hanging in my room. And they'll always be hehe.
      So credit to the artist as well, who's the same guy that did the artwork for Masstaden OG (Rickard Westman)
      Also they should make it into a short movie tbh lol, i wish they had the resources to do it

    • @thevishyfishy
      @thevishyfishy 2 года назад +8

      @@sirdo946 man, I love this damn album so much. I wish my friends liked this kind of music so I'd have someone to talk to about it. I could ramble about this endlessly lol. It's also inspired me to try and write music like this. I only have a 6 string guitar tuned to drop C so I won't be achieving tones quite as heavy, but its definitely inspired me to change the way I write riffs, and it especially changes a musician's relationship to time and meter. I love the absurd, almost comically heavy riffs but tbh I think the tone and tuning has nothing to do with how heavy this album is. The meticulous composition, insane attention to detail, and pervasive feelings of emotion and sorrow are really what does it for me. There's physical heaviness, yes, in the tuning and chugs and all that, but there's metaphorical heaviness too that i've really never seen before in this way. Couple other albums that are super heavy without even considering the actual guitar tone are Winter's Gate by Insomnium and The Way of All Flesh by Gojira. But still, those albums don't compare to Vildhjarta.

    • @sirdo946
      @sirdo946 2 года назад

      @@thevishyfishy oh yeah i only managed to get one friend of mine into Vildhjarta (and prog in general) but it's enough. I think i started him off with Jinjer's re-recorded version of Pisces and then randomly with Den Helige Anden and somehow he liked it lol. But yeah same, i could go on for hours talking about how well written and put together everything is. And the production, damn, I'm a drummer and the drums sound incredible. When i heard the album was pushed back because Buster decided to record drums instead of using programmed ones i was kinda bummed but i was absolutely blown away by the tones (especially the snare, it's the best metal snare sound I've ever heard). And seeing how much effort went into getting the perfect sounds just makes it even better. For example, to get the fat kinda "bouncy" bass drum sound, the bass drum head was tuned particularly loose so he had to adapt his double bass technique because with a less tight head you can't use as much rebound on fast parts. It's the little nuances like that that show how much care and attention every single small, insignificant detail got on this album. And i think the instrumental version highlights that production side as well
      Oh and edit: i also love The Way Of All Flesh, it's my fav Gojira album ;)

    Måsstadens nationalsång has a part that consists of bunch of the original album's riffs (2:13 in the actual song). The main part of the riff is All Those Feelings (3:32), then followed by When No One Walks with You (0:33), and back quickly to All Those Feelings, continuing where the original riff would've followed through. So the riff from All Those Feelings has been sliced and stuffed with the whole off Måsstaden, until the riff has been completed.

    A masterpiece, indeed. It's almost an overwhelming experience, especially if you haven't listen to their first full-length, Masstaden. It evokes lots of emotion for me, melancholy, despair, anger, apathy, sadness, nostalgia, fear, disgust, and hope at the end. At the end of the Paaradiso, with all the emotions that hit me in the course of the album, the outro feels so cathartic it makes me tear up. Like i lived another life in a paralel universe in the span of an album. Perfection.

    You're absolutely right in this being an album that you listen to all the way through, it's purely an experience. And so is their first album Masstaden tbh.
    I discovered these guys at the start of 2019 (was coming off a biiig Tesseract hype lol), first couple listens of a few songs i didn't really care for them. Then a few weeks later i listened to Masstaden OG in full and i was just completely mesmerized. It quickly became one of my top 3 albums of all time together with Altered State and Lateralus and it was basically the soundtrack of my summer. I spent like a month with "THALL" written on my arm, rewriting it almost everyday with a pen lmao. I made my phone cover with the original Tesseract logo and THALL written just under it. I was pretty much obsessed lol, and still was at the end of the year when they released the first single since 2013.
    Then i had to wait almost 2 years for this but it was 100% worth it. When the first atmospheric part (the first drop with ambience below it) in Lavender Haze hit me i literally just started crying because i couldn't believe i was actually listening to the new Vildhjarta album.
    This is very likely to go down as album of the decade for me, unless Tesseract pull something out with an incredible concept or some new band comes up, i don't think MUV will be topped before 2030 honestly.
    EDIT: oh and by the way, Fractalize is definitely thall and as such, they've been heavily influenced by Vildhjarta (starting from 2011), not the other way around ;)

    Yes, the moment I’ve been waiting for is finally here. This album is on my top 10 metal albums oat, for the simple fact that I’ve never heard / experienced anything like it, the mix of ambience and atmosphere with the heavy and brutal riffs and breakdowns is incredible, truly a masterpiece. Can’t wait for their next step, and I already know I’m gonna have a lot of fun watching this video.
    Edit: brilliant video, brilliant edits, it was almost like listening to this album for the first time again (and I couldn’t be happier about it), you nailed it with every comment and honestly everything on this video. This is definitely an album that fits into the second and deeper definition of masterpiece you brought up. THALL is extremely niche, and Vildhjarta are heavily influential within it, even though this album still very fresh and we still finding new details in it, I can already tell that it’s gonna stand the test of time 100%, Vildhjarta has proved to achieve that by releasing it 10 years after the original and making it a masterpiece. Everything about this album is brilliant, and this video is brilliant too. Congrats my dude, you’re the best and I have no doubt about it, no one is doing what you’re doing as good as you are. They've been doing that stuff since 2005 and it was heavily featured on the original Måsstaden (that came out in 20011, btw, the fans had been waiting for "under vatten" for 10+ years) whereas Fractalize dropped their first album in 2016. Meshuggah have done that type of riffing (just not to the extent of the two former) as well, though.
    Daniel is the OG of the thall shit.

    That 'glitchy' sound you love is something you can do on your guitar too! It's called a dead note, lightly mute the string(s) with your left and and play whatever you want on the right - sounds lovely with high overdrive and occasional multiple strings to give extra chonk

    “Shut up and listen mentality” was the greatest thing I’ve ever heard be said on a reaction channel

    I would recommend checking out their first album Masstaden, they have a remastered version (forte) that has similar production to this one.

    Wow, I really like that reaction to the full album! Now you only have to listen to the whole Måsstaden (forte) album (their 1st one, reproduced by buster) and come back here to hear and feel the evolution and progress and understand the Masstaden nationalsang under vatten. I go vote for that on your patreon ;)
