Hoping to have my garage fixed by this summer, so I can start doing more scrapping. Getting a good haul now and then dumpster diving and just picking up cans. Really looking forward to doing it more! Love these vids brother, it's inspirational!
I've watched scapper videos from time to time with some interest but never followed any closely until I stumbled onto thubprint a month or so ago and I've been hooked ever since. Maybe it's because you're a local boy but I find myself wanting to do this and I can't figure out why. At my age, it would be hard work and I have small, successful IT biz which keeps me warm and comfy with enough left over to have fun and save. Maybe it's the simplicity of it - IT can be complex and a pain - and I've done it for a long time and desire more simplicity. There's also an element of finding 'treasure' even if it's mostly low value - except copper perhaps. I've started checking out bins recently and I feel odd doing it...like I'm doing something wrong or perhaps it's an ego thing. I think it goes against the image I have about myself as someone who shouldn't need to dumpster dive and what if someone I know sees me doing it...lol. But, it looks like fun and I'm on the hunt for steel and aluminum for projects I want to work on. I've seen some of the stuff you've pulled out and I think I want that! I often think you should setup a store selectively selling aluminum extrusions or plate or tubular steel as well as the motors to hobbyists. This stuff isn't inexpensive new however it would require a lot of space, people coming to your home which might then attract the attention of the overbearing minions at YYC city admin. Anyhow, I think I'm going to start doing it more but selectively and see if I can find some treasure and maybe a good pile of copper over time. Might even buy a wire stripper. ( Now I wish I hadn't thrown out a bunch of copper wire a couple of months ago from a home reno project :) On a side note, it's astonishing how much stuff which is still usable, has value but gets thrown out. A moveable staircase for cryin out loud and piles of new racking!!! If it wasn't for scrappers, the price of everything would be much higher. The amount of metals you guys divert from permanent landfill must be massive. Thanks for the vids...it's been an enjoyable and inspiring diversion.
Fixing bikes is kinda tough . Most of the time at bear minimum bikes need brake pads and that's about $15 us dollars not to mention new cables. Tires aren't cheap either. Hope u scrapped it lol.
Hey Thub i am currently stripping out a bunch of old radiators on a job site, we are keeping the copper but we are just tossing all the steel cabinets. would you be interested?
I just wanted to let you know that I love watching your videos. Cause you brave the elements. And I also like the knowledge that share with fellow pandas.. I'm just starting out on scavenging. An here on the easy coast. There is alot of competition.
Hey Thub, the place that I work at does a lot of screen repair and we throw away a lot of aluminum frames, would it be worth the effort to collect it or does the price not justify the effort? (They're fine with me digging in the trash fwi)
Well! Just got home from my second job (scrapping is still my first) and was about to go and hit my route when I see this vid pop up in my sub list! I can wait another 35 minutes, I will fix a cup of coffee-cocoa and give this a watching.
This past Monday, I only had 280 pounds of steel from Sunday night, but the 235 pounds of “smalls” more than made up for it. $24 in steel, $92 in breakage, wire, aluminum, and stainless steel. Thanks for getting me pumped up to go hit some trash and find some treasure! I really would like to make a video of my route, but I go out after dark like a creeper (🤣) and it’s hard to record at night. Plus, y’know, poor so no equipment.

Hi from Calgary! I’ve got a couple toolboxes but in the truck can I keep my stuff in an old wooden soda crate and the garage is a workbench with a shelf underneath because most of the tools are larger than what a drawer would hold. Bashing on aluminium is crazy loud so I’m really happy to have that. And of course a whole collection of leather gloves, and my coveralls are acid/fire retardant material 👍
Cheers fellow Canadian scrapper I've just done three and they all were double aluminum windings. Kinda a waste really only good copper is in the magnetron and one copper donut lol
