The Chinese have also been caught fishing off the UK coast. They'll literally fish anywhere that isn't their own waters for the sole reason that they've polluted them so heavily fish can't live there.

Local fisherman have to abide by strict quotas, but the Chinese vessels do not adhere to those laws and take however much they want. I personally think they're able to get away with this because they fund a lot of our politicians.

I had a mate I worked closely with from rural China. I asked Hong one day "what sorta fish did you catch in the rivers as a kid?" He replied, "nothing, there were no fish left".
There is a guy on youtube that does vlog from china. A few years back he went to a neighbouring country and the first thing he noticed just over the border: there were wild animals. Wich he hasn't seen in China for a long time, not in his vlogs either. It's not just the fish but all animals.

I am a Chinese and I think you are right that we should be blamed on these cases. I want to tell you that catching fishes near other countries boundaries is also TOTALLY illegal in China which definitely make these "fishermen" become criminals. I'm sorry that these criminals in China did lots of damage in foreign countries. What gives me relief is that I also know some of them have been sentenced to prison because they broke the laws of fishing. Things get better now. And I saw similar news in domestics once. And Chinese citizens also showed extremely anger towards these illegal behaviors. These criminals just SHAME us all.

Fishing boat observers are useless. The ones that do their job right risk being lost overboard. They need airplanes to observed these fleets.
We can patrol the waters with drones if motivated. They simply need to ask for international assistance to send real armed coast guard vessels to apprehend and sink the offending rust buckets.

I don't know why the BBC reporter didn't accuse the observer of lying when speaking to the Minister of Fisheries. He has satellite, photo evidence of them illegally fishing and the "civil servant" says, "well, we have not been reported".

This has been going on for decades. I once saw 12 trawlers in a line, yes 12 trawlers on a return from Banana Island on a day trip. Fish is the only food the locals can afford and even that will be taken from them eventually. Meat is unaffordable for the vast majority. Maybe piracy might prove a useful deterrent. If the food in my community was threatened in this way, piracy would be a strong to survive seeing as youth unemployment is probably around 60% or higher. The kickbacks some of these Ministers get is staggering and they sold their souls long ago for the almighty dollar. The only qualification you need to be one of these ministers is to be able to grab money at every turn and have a short term plan, preferably not longer than a day. No pride, no shame, and as dense as the Amazon rain forest.

Here is another "small step" that can be introduced➡Fix it so ANY vessels fishing local waters Must pass local vessel Inspections & become Certified to fish leagally, this includes keeping & Maintaining a strick Distance kept from each fishing boat. Then if they are caught fishing illegally Revoke their Certification to fish the local waters fine them & impound their vessel until they pay their fine.

I don't know if this is possible or not...but why not make it illegal for multiple vessels to be within a certain proximity of one another for a specific period of time? Then revoke or suspend licenses based on the satellite data. Help local fishers get the vessels, contacts, and knowledge needed to supply fish in global markets, and use part of the money made through increased local profit and tax/permits to increase patrols that enforce bans and protect local fishers against any type of piracy.

Under current world trade organisation rules, fish have very little tariffs associated with it as it is does not count as agriculture.

Educate yourself, all that happened was a significant international naval presence was established in the region to protect foreign fishing vessels and piracy has become increasingly unprofitable, in fact just last year Somalia sold numerous fishing licenses to China. The only solution (which is still unlikely) is a radical change within West Africa where the elites reject foreign exploitation of natural resources which in turn puts at risk wider economic growth because like it or not it’s the Chinese that are facilitating rapid growth in states such as Nigeria.
