Zero Cool I completely agree with you, I subscribed to VOX primarily for these educational videos. I wouldn't say I dismiss VOX's political videos, But I view it with healthy scepticism. This is a wide spread problem with the media today, not only do they not make a distinction between an editorial and the news,The opinions expressed are either always liberal or conservative. There is no balance between them.which is why so many have come to distrust the media.
I think its funny when people commend a news outlet for their work then claim they "lean left"...ever think that maybe they're consistent in telling the truth and you just lean too far right?
ThatF_inGuy no, not a all, you see the news outlet shouldn't, in a purely theoretical sense, express their opinion on the topics presented, but simply publish the news, and when they do express their opinion , they should clarify that the article is an editorial, because some people can't differentiate. officially Taiwan is part of the PRC and few countries actually recognize it as a sovereign nation. But that is the official stance as in reality it is a stable self governing body and most nations maintain connections, but they are more of informal relations. It's a tricky situation but officially the consensus is that Taiwan is a part of mainland China, even if nobody acts that way.
I would like for that to be true, but legally and in most countries eyes, Taiwan is a part of China. They don't want to 'anger' China because they trade with them so much. It's really stupid and based on greed, but also it makes total sense. I hope Taiwan will truly become independent one day.

Hi Vox, constructive criticism: the Chinese are terrified of the positivity of a naval blockade. As an export driven economy they need the access to markets in Europe, Asia etc. through the south China sea. more importantly if their economy falls into ressesion (e.g. because of a US blockade) , unrest in the population may very quickly become an issue for the Chinese government to the extent of political revolution or civil war. So the Chinese are not taking control of the south China sea because they are mean and greedy, but because they have to in order to secure their own safety and sovereignty. just saying this issue is a bit more complex than you make it appear. if anyone is interested look up: Asia's cauldron Robert A. Kaplan, The End of the Asian Century Micheal R. Auslin.

On the contrary, China claims that sovereignty over the South China Sea is mine, but resources can be developed jointly with Southeast Asian countries. However, the Southeast Asian countries claim that the sovereignty over the South China Sea is theirs and they do not need to join hands with China. And if you know that Southeast Asian countries do not have the ability to exploit the resources of the South China Sea, and the American oil company is the boss behind the scenes, what do you think?
@Alex The Awesome After the victory of World War II, China signed the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation. When the first 11 intermittent lines were announced in 1947, China demanded Japan to return the occupied sea areas. At that time, the international community did not raise any objection, and the neighboring Southeast Asian countries never made diplomatic protests. Many countries, including the countries surrounding the South China Sea, as well as the Soviet Union, Japan, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, have also drawn 11 intermittent lines on the maps published, indicating that they belong to China. Since the 1990s, 800 Chinese fishermen in the South China Sea have been arrested, sentenced and 25 killed. Before the Chinese Navy cruised in the South China Sea, Chinese fishermen were the real victims. Please don't pretend to be a victim. It's ridiculous.

As a French Canadian Law School student currently studying international law, I'm extremely disappointed by this video. #Vox is oversimplifying how the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea works especially when Vox is talking about the EEZ and the Spratly Islands. I know most people won’t care, but their explanation is so incomplete that it’s factually wrong. I’m a huge fan of Vox but they really did a terrible job with this video. Vox definitely did not double check this video with a lawyer specialized in international law.
willeyam Yeah. I'm sure educating the mass with factual information on this topic was their top priority when they made this video. Matter of fact, I'd say calling this video a piece of political propaganda would be more factual than the video itself. Anyways, I wouldn't be too upset about it though, any channel on RUclips that talks about politics will definitely have its own political agenda to push, just like this one.
I have to quote from another commentor in this video, he wrote: "This video misses out lots of important points and is obviously biased. The 9 dashed lines is inherited from the 11 dashed lines from the ROC government and was drawn before Vietnam and the Philippines decolonized. The Vietnamese ruler even sent Mao a letter that acknowledge China's ownership of the islands. The consensus among the countries was that nobody touches the islands in this generation, and that the future generations may have a better solution to solve the conflict. Then Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines begin to take control of more and more islands, reclaimed islands and built bases on top of them BEFORE China did any reclamation or build any bases. The US did nothing at all. Then when China started doing the same, all of a sudden China is the "bully". Vox also left out a VERY important thing about the EEZ. It does not settle disputes about sovereignty. If China or any other country has sovereignty of just 1 of the islands, it can claim 200 nautical miles of EEZ from that island. UNCLOS's EEZ does not settle this. Again, extremely important detail here is being left out. Also, "The Hague" is just a place. There are many international bodies in "The Hague". The body making the ruling is the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA). It is NOT the International Court of Justice(ICJ) arm which is part of the UN. The PCA is not part of the UN judicial body The intentional vague reports of merely using "the Hague" is so misleading. Arbitration by definition means "the hearing and determining of a dispute or the settling of differences between parties by a person or persons chosen or agreed to by them". China did not agree to it, and thus, it is by definition not a real arbitration. It is a kangaroo court. Not to mention that the US did not even ratify the UNCLOS. Vox obviously didn't do its research thoroughly."
billy jeAN China is a signatory of UNCLOS, it means they superceded their 9 or 11 dash line claim.. Just because it's not favourable for them at this point, they're dismissing the international agreement they have signed and stick to their historical claim.

I generally like Vox, but they did not do their homework on this one. First, they presented the story like it is the law-abiding countries with small claims vs greedy land-grabbing China claiming everything. Taiwan was not mentioned at all. Why? Because Taiwan has exactly the same claims as China, for exactly the same reasons, and Taiwan is a US ally. Second, why did the Chinese in PRC and ROC disagree with the Hague, when it is so obvious the islands are closer to the Philippines? Because the EEZ is projected around not only the mainland, but around inhabitable islands as well. So if a country has an inhabited island in the Spratlies, they hold the entire group. And there is such an island, with fresh water, vegetation and so on - Taiping, currently held by Tawan. The Hague considered it a "rock", incapable or supporting habitation and therefore not projecting EEZ. I'd say they were not being objective. If Taiping is considered an island, then China has a reasonable claim over the islands under the UNCLOS international law. Third, Air Defence Identification Zones are common, the US and Japan have vast zones outside their territorial waters and even outside their EEZs. Painting the Chinese ADIZ like an illegal land-grab is misleading at best. Finally, the law which the US is accusing China of breaking, UNCLOS, is not even *accepted* by the US! It's literally "You have to follow the laws we made... but we don't have to!". No wonder the Chinese are accusing the US of being unfair.
kwazooplayingguardsman Not only are you uncivilized, you are also very wrong. "EEZ doesn't protrude with inhabitated islands " www.un.org/depts/los/convention_agreements/texts/unclos/part8.htm This is the Law of the Sea. the article about islands and rocks. Islands get EEZ, rocks do not. No need of provable human settlement and governance, only that they can "sustain human habitation or economic life". "U.S and China are both signatories of UNCLOS" The US participated in writing it, signed it, enforces it, but did not ratify it - so it does not apply to them. www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jul/16/demint-says-law-sea-treaty-now-dead/ The US being "exceptional" has no problem enforcing international law on others, but God forbid the US sovereignty be subject to an international body.
+Nikola Tasev Regarding US exceptionalism, I would like to add that the United States *withdrew from International Court of Justice* in 1986 and will only accept the court's jurisdiction *only on a case-by-case basis*. Sounds hypocritical, coming from a country that promotes human rights.
@Nikola Tasev, so if islands get EEZ and rocks do not, then how are man-made islands viewed in this law? A country could just build an island that is capable of sustaining human habitation and economic life on what previously was just a simple rock or corral reef, like what China is doing now. How are these loophole islands addressed?
As far as I know man-made islands are viewed in their original form. If it was originally a submerged reef (like most are) it does not extend the EEZ. "A country could just build an island that is capable of sustaining human habitation " Making an island with freshwater spring is not simple. You can't just dredge a harbor, pile the coral and extend a runway, like nations are doing right now. You need a lot of silt/soil and vegetation in order to hold an aquifer, as well as a long period of rain to fill it. Taiping is a natural freshwater island, though, so it does not change the Spratly situation.

However, the proof you can provide to claim "your house" as your property is far less substantial than what the Chinese can offer. In ancient times, the Chinese had more advanced maritime technology and were the first to discover these islands. In modern times, Chinese fishermen have been operating in these waters. You think it's "your house" simply because you believe it's closer to where you live-that's just your perception.
South China Sea is just China's desperate attempt to counter US bases' ability to seal off sea routes to china, and the bases around south korea and japan that are lining up China's productivity concentration in the coastal cities like a firing squad. China's army is pretty powerful has a great chance to defend China's threat on land, but there's a very high risk of the war taking place right at their coastal cities because the bases are so close to them. Their navy compared to the US navy gives them little confidence. They are not capable of building more carriers to match up the current US navy strength in order to transfer their firepower to where the US bases can seal off the sea routes, but they can afford to build islands that can project their firepower to where the seal point. In fact, these islands barely resolve China's fear, US presence in the region is just too overwhelming, and is totally not lacking in naval asset. Instead of how the video painting China as the naturally born greedy evil, and US being the police here, the fact is that it is just China's ruthless reaction to US's nicely wrapped over 50 years long plan of china containment.

It is different from the U.S, as China is building stuff within their own Territory. When ROC (China) declared 11 dash line and was recognized by other countries including the west, UNCLOS was not signed, Philippine was not even decolonized. Timeline of South China sea islands after WW2: 1945 Japan surrendered and islands were returned to China 1946 China officially accepted the islands and went there to build monuments over the islands as a symbol of sovereignty, note that America at that time provided China with 9 vessels to help China regain control. 1948 China declared the 11 dash line officially to the international society and was recognized 1982 UNCLOS was concluded 1989 Philippine declared independence There was no dispute regarding China's sovereignty decades before, it all happened after America's Pivot to Asia strategy.
+Sam Hofman Some of the US treaties are questionable, such as Hawaii fighting for independence from US but losing and being taken over by the US. US airbases in Okinawa Japan was built as a result of Japanese WW2 surrender, so you can't really say that US had Japanese permission. It as part of Japanese surrender condition. China does not have these treaties because it claimed those territories historically before international law of the sea was created.

China's real purpose is not the territorial sea or resources of the South China Sea, but the Strait of Malacca. The South China Sea is one of the major arteries of the Chinese economy, and the Strait of Malacca is the most important channel to the South China Sea. Because the US military is currently stationed in Singapore, they can control the Malacca Strait at any time if they want to control the lifeline of the Chinese economy. Therefore, after building island and military base from the South China Sea, the Straits of Malacca entered the combat radius of the Chinese army, preventing the United States from suppressing China's weakness.

We've won on paper, but the current administration is siding with China on a geopolitical aspect, and it hurts the validity of the case's win at The Hague. Another great informative video from Vox. As a person living in Singapore, this incident hits particularly close to home. On one hand, we (not everyone) absolutely despise what China is doing at the South China Sea, but on the other hand, we do not want to offend China as we will risk our economic interests. I do hope that this doesn't escalate into war as peace is very much appreciated in the region.
The problem is that China seems to be offended that Singapore is intending to stay neutral, despite being a "country with a major Chinese population". You are either with, or against them, no in-between. In fact, China is already offended when Singapore claims that China should abide by international law, basically telling China that Singapore does not support them. I believe many countries in Asia will start to bend towards China when it throws around its economic weight, more so now that Trump's USA seems to be less and less reliable as a check to China's power.

Yes we are going to ignore that, why is it different if it's reef?
Oriental Chopstick these reefs are home to many different species and reefs are important to the ocean and the life that lives in it. As they said the South China Sea is home to 10% of the world fisheries, building on reefs can cause a decline in the amount of fish species in the area.

Vox definitely did not double check this video with a lawyer specialized in international law.
willeyam Why?
willeyam Yeah.
Facts do not matter, what matters is the big power conflict in international stage.
I have to quote from another commentor in this video, he wrote:
"This video misses out lots of important points and is obviously biased.

@menkrep1337 It is an ethnoslinguistic group
No wonder the Chinese are accusing the US of being unfair.
kwazooplayingguardsman

No need of provable human settlement and governance, only that they can "sustain human habitation or economic life".
"U.S and China are both signatories of UNCLOS"
The US participated in writing it, signed it, enforces it, but did not ratify it - so it does not apply to them.
www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jul/16/demint-says-law-sea-treaty-now-dead/
The US being "exceptional" has no problem enforcing international law on others, but God forbid the US sovereignty be subject to an international body.
"A country could just build an island that is capable of sustaining human habitation "
Making an island with freshwater spring is not simple.

When ROC (China) declared 11 dash line and was recognized by other countries including the west, UNCLOS was not signed, Philippine was not even decolonized.
Timeline of South China sea islands after WW2:
1945 Japan surrendered and islands were returned to China
1946 China officially accepted the islands and went there to build monuments over the islands as a symbol of sovereignty, note that America at that time provided China with 9 vessels to help China regain control.
1948 China declared the 11 dash line officially to the international society and was recognized
1982 UNCLOS was concluded
1989 Philippine declared independence
There was no dispute regarding China's sovereignty decades before, it all happened after America's Pivot to Asia strategy.

Not really, the US is a infant compared to most other countries and what claims they might have.
Not that i agree with what china is doing tho.
@@MadsenTheDane What's an example of a country that has successfully made a "historical claim" on a body of water?
@@robertf6409 Denmark had a historical claim on the water all around it because Denmark was more powerful than Norway and Sweden and thus they still have to pay fees to cross out into the open ocean
you talk like the US did any better, 800 military bases globally and they cannt allow China has one!
@@MadsenTheDane I'm curious...
Who is Denmark paying fees to ?
Historical claim by china?
Mongolia: "inhale"
🤣🤣
As a Filipino, I am enraged and downright angry at the audacity of the Chinese to encroach on our territory.
We've won on paper, but the current administration is siding with China on a geopolitical aspect, and it hurts the validity of the case's win at The Hague.
I did hope that this featured more on the plight of claimant nations like The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, as well as Brunei and Indonesia.
Calm down. It's a move by Duterte that will soon dismay China. Remember my comment in the future years.
Jack Nicole Tabirao buy But it doesn’t stop Filipinos from buying products made in China and welcoming Chinese as tourists and businessmen and criminals.
@@BestdaughtereverEver Even more painful to realize is, do we really have a choice? I mean, majority of all the products sold on the market have Chinese counterparts that are way cheaper than their quality Filipino or other foreign exporting nation.
Just think of it The americans Occupied our country because they see us as money
Doesnt mean we cant fish on south China sea we have Rice Meat and even our US ally which also a superpower cant even feed us with just a Mcdonalds that we still need to pay for it that we also Have Jollibee or atleast Barrack Obama would just help Ninoy Aquino during the war on drugs campaign
Despise all you can
Bloopdog Peace in Asia....yeah right.
Bloopdog
i keep saying this, china claimed these islands before the other countries even had Thier independence.
jklahsd32 laksd13 And now they are going to unclaim them.
Man made tsunami would fix those, or natural lol
Yea, set off an underwater explosion and say it was from an earthquake...
pulsar's beam I really agree with you
They can easily identified if it was a man made or natural tsunami.. if they did then, welcome ww3.
Dont get me wrong. I really hate those chinese bullying their neighbors.
One day it will suddenly collapsed without knowing. Nature will take the revenge. Let's just wait.
Vox can you do an update to this video on what has changed in the South China Sea since this video was made?

CHINA WINS OVER THE SOUTH CHINA SEA FAIR AND SQUARE, BY THE HARD WORK OF INNOVATION, JUST LIKE ONCE BRITAIN DID TO TAKE OVER HALF OF THE WORLD AS COLONIES.
@@guestguest4023 but they did return it to independence, haven't you heard?
@@substygram4357 That is because Britain became weak and unable to handle those colonies. Competition among humans will benefit the human race. Competition allows the strongest to grow and the weakest ones to shrink. The stronger the human race, the better it is because there are always challenges ahead such as diseases and disasters that the human race has to solve or else the human race ends. That is why God wants competition in all his creations so His creations will survive the world's harsh environment.
@@guestguest4023 what China did is disgusting seriously. Greedy and selfish
@@yusufqisthi2105 NO, according to God's law of competition for the benefit of the human race, the strongest grow and the weakest shrink. Small countries are small because they cannot work as a team. So they are a weaker human specie.
