  • Super Trawler: Enormous Dutch commercial fishing vessel seized by the Australian government
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv/?lid=64862
When Dutch super-trawler The Margiris was given the go-ahead to catch millions of dollars worth of fish in Australian waters, her owners didn't realise they were sailing straight into a bureaucratic nightmare.
This report charts the extraordinary course of events that culminated in the world's second largest trawler being left stranded and impotent thousands of miles from her native Holland. The Margiris' owners were assured by Australia that they had permission to fish its seas. "Literally what they said was, we will back you up no matter what happens, if you follow the rules. And we said we can accept that of course". But what the ship's owners hadn't counted on was a perfect storm of political protest that brought environmental groups and recreational fishers together in a campaign that even threatened to destabilise the Australian government. In a bold move, the government sided with the people and anchored the super trawler for good. "We've got no idea what the rules are now!" exclaims ship owner, Gerry Geen. So was this democracy in action, or political incompetence?

What is mind blowing is the fact that the guy says the fish was disappearing so he wanted to move to another area to destroy it instead. Does he not see that this is the exact attitude that caused the problem in the first place.

When I came to California to go to college in 1965 all the sardine fishing boats and canning factories went out of business because of over-fishing, and the small population of sardines that survived can only be found in South America. After protests against her use by environmental and fishing industry groups, the Australian government passed legislation prohibiting the trawler from fishing in Australian waters for two years. For this reason, Seafish Tasmania subsequently sold its stake in the vessel to Dutch company Parlevliet & Van der Plas. On March 6, 2013, after six months moored in Australian waters, she left Port Lincoln, having reassumed her original name of Margiris.
After leaving Australian waters, the vessel passed through Cook Strait, New Zealand on March 20, 2013. She was now flagged to Lithuania and owned by Atlantic High Sea Fishing Company.
Margiris arrived in Port of Penco, Chile on April 7, 2013. The vessel did not berth and steamed out of the bay to fish.
In late 2016 she was working along the west coast of Ireland.
In July 2017 AFMA came out with a scientifically UNSUPPORTED plan to roll back environmental limits and curtail conservation.
Many marine scientists are dismayed. “They’ve nearly halved the level of protection,” says marine ecologist Jessica Meeuwig, director of the University of Western Australia’s Centre for Marine Futures in Perth. “It’s very demoralizing to the scientists who’ve done so much hard work,” Booth adds. “You would not believe the amount of work that’s been put into establishing these places. Then suddenly it all comes off the table.”

there is a lot of misunderstanding here. The first thing to understand is that Australia's fisheries are the best managed fisheries in the world with every fishery (at the time of this event) either sustainable or being very close to being sustainable, and by-catch survival rates the best in the world and constantly being improved.
what was in place was a maximum quota of fish to be taken, shared over many boats, the "super trawler" had to purchase quota from other boats to catch fish, that means no more fish were allowed to be caught, just that one boat was going to be doing most of the catching. Quota is allocated in units, each year the fisheries authority attaches a weight to each unit of quota. this allows adjustment of allowable tonnage caught when environmental conditions are unfavourable for fish breading.

Patricia Butler. Brexshit hasn’t changed much, because the big Dutch companies, have a legal right to fish(because they own most of the licenses to the quotas, and so it would be illegal to stop them, without stopping all of the fishing), anywhere in British waters(and we were able to fish in the EU waters too, until that was taken from us), that they want to... Just as long, as the boat is not breaking the size regulations, regarding the distance from the shoreline etc.....
And as for the decimation of our fish stocks, I know for a fact(as a lifelong share fisherman) that the British, are just as responsible, for that as anyone else, if not more so...
That is especially true, in the case of the winter mackerel, which was the main winter catch in Cornwall( we used to use hook and lines, without damaging the stocks), that was, until the Scotch trawlers came down in the early seventies, after the trawlers wiped out their own stock. And so they came here and wiped our stocks out(which is why the scotch nationalists, who know nothing, that bang on about not letting southern boats up there, piss me off, because they’ve been down here for fifty years)...
And, as a commercial fisherman for my whole working life, I have watched the trawlers, and biggest types of other boats, wipe out the different species one by one...
Starting with the pilchards; mackerel; cod; spur-dogs(rock salmon); hake and all of the others that have been decimated...
So please, don’t take this the wrong way, but until you actually know, what you’re talking about, shut the fuck up, especially with your xenophobic bullshit, you NUMPTY........

It is like a third world decision making. Poor Garry and his partners. I know how bitter the third world decision making is. Till the end of the video I still dont get the answer as to why the government allowed the super trawler to come to Australia in the first place, only to let her sit, rusting there at the port. Could it be that it was all staged in such way by the Australian Government to make the world think of Australia as a champion in advocating environmental protection. On a more measured note - I am an Australian who has lived in Europe for 25 years and as such I am acutely aware of the problems with overfishing and the devastation of the seafloor by huge nets that scrape up everything with impunity. It's ludicrous to have such large vessels destroying habitats and fisheries. Australia should protect it's fishing boundaries with fish being caught only for the local market - Australia. A controversial view I know but certainly sustainable. But what horrifies me even more than this - is what politicians will do to protect their jobs. The duplicity, deceit and the lies these politicians told to protect themselves is a disgrace. All this documentary shows is that politicians revert to type the minute they feel threatened - ready to blame everyone else. I am very anti the super trawlers but as one of the owners said "if they had told us they didn't want us we wouldn't have come". In fact one official says they will be backed by the Australia fisheries department. I really believe that the political classes in the democratic west are in the last chance saloon. Nobody trusts them, they lie, they cheat just to protect themselves. They didn't act in this case until a strong coalition against the super trawler could have threatened their jobs because of a political backlash. Maybe I'm being naive (many would say this has always been the case) but I get more and more despondent with the weak, opportunist, career politicians who govern us. And I don't believe I alone in this.

This trawler isn't laying nets, its towing a large net and targeting swarms of fish. Net fishing often has more bycatch then trawlers have. Pelagic trawling when done right is actually an environmental choice. I am not sure how it compares to the supertrawler, but smaller trawlers often have even less bycatch then other methods of fishing because they go precisely for a swarm (at least in regulated trawling). There is no damage to the seabed like in bottom trawling.
It isn't the ship that is the problem, it is the regulation. Quotas need to be set accordingly and areas need to be thoroughly regulated.

@@Jason-rs6co your comments are based on nothing, if they had of been based on facts you would have provided them, but you didn't because you cant. the facts are that all Australian fisheries are sustainable and are the best managed fisheries in the world. the facts are also that every year in Australia 1 in every 1000 people that goes to sea fishing in a boat 25 metres or smaller will die. there is nothing stupid about my comment except your lack of acceptance of it. reducing the number of boats and increasing their size makes for a safer environment for the people involved, but you enjoy your fish knowing that people died to put your meal on your plate and that you think more should die for that meal

Greed and lack of caring for the local areas future is the standard of the big business fishing world. An area once visited by a big trawler is often fishless for two years or more.
It happens all over the world ie, France overfished their own fishing area in the Med until the area is completely barren and now are working hard at overfishing the British fishing area - then when the last fish has gone they will go and overfish on someone else´s fishing ground.

Having watched a great fishery diminishing because of gill netting in California and the draconian measures and regulations to finally stop the utter depletion of the fishery, I can attest to how much profit only commercial fishing can cause a great fishery to crash. Back in the late 70's and 80's the sport fishermen of CA tried to get rid of gill netting. They were not supposed to wrap their nets around kelp beds or catch certain sport fish like the Kelp Bass (calico) which pretty much lived in the Kelp beds. They were allowed to keep the restricted species as "incidental" catch including the endangered black sea bass which can grow to 500 lbs.
They ignored the regulations about wrapping kelp beds and they also devised a way to gill net at very deep depths, like 600 ft (100 fathoms) plus. So the deep water rock fish were severely depleted. My dad, if he saw a gill net around a kelp bed would drop his anchor into the net and drag it off and get the fish that were dead out, a gill net kills fish, it doesn't just contain them so you can throw back the "incidental" fish. Now in CA there are very tough fishing regulations and a ban on gill nets, but the commercial fish lobby prevailed for too long. You are not allowed to fish below 360 feet because they depleted the rock fish stocks. Rock fish and Calico-Sand-Spotted bay bass are all very slow growing. It takes 5 years for a Calico bass to grow to 12 inches and the same for rock fish or rock cod as they are commonly called in CA. There are now certain species of fish in CA that never had a seasonal restriction, there is now on many many species.
To over-fish a sustainable resource to near depletion is asinine and short-sighted. Mankind has shown itself more than capable of that. Go up to the Northeastern states and look at the cod fishery, almost wiped out. Thank God Canada didn't allow it in their waters so the cod are slowly coming back. Only Maine has a good lobster fishery as well because the lobstermen decided a long time ago to keep it sustainable.
Fish which are good for you to eat are getting more and more expensive because of over-fishing. Thankfully here in the USA they have implemented intelligent reform in most cases, though not all.

It was halted due to the bycatch or accidental fish related deaths and the politicians were spineless people who should have stopped the project at the start. People invested tens of millions into the operation. They should have ben just told no.

Everyone has to make a livelihood. These super trawlers deprive fishermen in poor countries of their livelihood. This also results in the Piracy on the high seas, which is a direct result of these super trawlers. The super trawlers have "state of the art" technology for fishing as compared to the primitive technology which poor fishermen of different developing countries possess.

The lawmakers who flip flopped and lead everyone on are the ones to blame in this situation. The boat owner did everything in his power to follow the law and make his boat as environmentally friendly as possible. The fishing is done by quota so what is the problem with having the quota caught by a large ship instead of smaller boat. The politicians never should have let the ship come to Australia in the first place if they were just going to change their stance at the first sign of negative public opinion. What a bunch of scumbags making the owners waste all that money. The politicians will do anything to stay in power.

I don't think it's the quota and number of boats as opposed to the local commercial fisherman not having the catches they seem to want or need as it does as putting them out of work.. Like here in the US the number of licensed are governed along with quota having said that I think the bigger problem is the recreational fishermen which I am one... (recreational fishermen b**** about everything) Except for polluting the water with their plastic bottles beer cans and all that b******* ...
But I have been a commercial fisherman in my younger years and I support commercial fishing and USA Seafood only..
I will not eat Cesspool farm raised shrimp from Vietnam or Indonesia or wherever also I do not support these super trawlers if they're over 120' they should be made into artificial reefs..
I think it is raping the ocean from the local commercial fishermen's businesses and depriving our citizens of fresh local caught Seafood around our Coast...
      Just my thoughts..
      Have a great day Sir..

This is one of the most irrational reactions I've seen a government take (and I live in the US). Whether you have 10 smaller boats or one big boat, the total bycatch is the same. Furthermore, having one larger boat means it's easier to institute a new lower bycatch design and easier to regulate and monitor one big boat rather than a bunch of smaller ones. As long as you have a set quota for the total catch, it doesn't really matter if it's one boat or a thousand.
