Hello everyone! My name is Ian Urbina, and I am the director of The Outlaw Ocean Project, which produced this amazing documentary film. I’ll be happy to answer any questions here (with input from the filmmakers Ed Ou, Will Miller, and Michael Hsu). Thanks for watching.
Thanks so much for this 🙏 What was the inspiration for this piece? And what made its production most difficult?
Hi Ian, all the visual material is real correct ? How did you film this ? Hidden cameras, you had the permits.... Extraordinary film by the way, congrats !!
@@garrusv Personally, my goal was to offer a counterbalance to the investigative reporting, which provides a critical assessment of the human-rights and environmental record of this fleet. We sought to offer a more intimate look at the experience of working in such a grueling job. The film also aimed to communicate why someone might choose to take one of these dangerous, often exploitative jobs.
Two challenges for the whole team were getting on the vessels themselves and figuring out how to tell the story in a way that didn't jeopardize individual people that we met during the reporting.
Hi Ian there's the Krill Vacuuming as well in the South Atlantic, there's problems brewing there. Are you going to cover it. There is a problem with factory fishing off the East Africa Coast and the North Atlantic too. Out Of Sight Out Of Mind.
thx sooo much to you and all involved for making this film...blessings to all...w/ a heavy heart...

HAHAHAA OMG
Thank you for telling the world.
Squid will no longer be at my table.
wether you eat/buy squid, they will fish them!!
No joke, I’m in. No more squid for me either. No way I would be able to eat it without thinking of what these people go through.
@@psystealth Of course, because people who have your mindset exist. They will continue buying it because "well they will still fish them" but in reality if enough people cared about morality, they would stop purchasing it, and there would be no market for this.
@@psystealth Overtime, as demand decreases then supply will also decrease
One person can make a difference ❤
I can't believe this only has 130k views it is sad but its so well shot.
Came here after Stephanie’s video😢
I read your article online via "LA Times" titled "They catch squid for the world’s table. But deckhands on Chinese ships pay a deadly price". I came across this video to see a "Chinese squid boat" up close. Both are excellent. RIP Fadhil and others.
I was born n raised in what was then the country's largest commercial fishing port. SIXTY YEARS AGO, when I was a small child, Russian, Asian, n Scandinavian countries sent huge fishing factory fleets to what was the richest fishing grounds in the world, the Grand Banks, in the North Atlantic. American fleets could not compete against these factory fleets that could do all the processing of their catches at sea. Today the Grand Banks is a barren wasteland n my proud hometown fishing fleet is no longer, throwing generations of fishermen permanently out of work.
Looks like here in Argentina must buy a few warships and end this madness in front of Argentina coast
And the west side of Africa
The cod did not stand a chance.
Greedy ba$ turds
Galilee? New Bedford? Which one?
*Commercial sea scallop fisherman here, out of Cape May, NJ. We fish for squid **_a lot_** different than this.* Also, he said "your mind is in the sky, because your feet are never on the ground: if your mind wanders when you're working at sea, you _will_ get hurt.
This is slavery!😢 China needs a union that fights for employee rights. This is unacceptable and heartbreaking 💔
Entire china is a slavery country under communist
You just know they will never have that
China have more regulated and active unions than USA. Their agenda and pressure on the government for better labor conditions has an line of communication way better than in the USA. No other country has more anual strikes than China.
it's the CCP rights kidding me they threw you overboard with a brick but you let you become squid food the Chinese Communist Party has over 300,000 fishing vessels just think of that now? They could wipe everything out if they wanted to
lmao union in a comunist dictatorship 😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks Stephanie, you brought us all here. Squid is out the bag.
The long shots where you see dozens and dozens of boats is wild
Superb film, absolute masterpiece.
I totally loved the photography and the story telling.
Reading the article before made the difference on the deep understanding of the film.
Fabulous.
The filming is outstanding.
Makes me awfully sad how we humans are destroying the world and destroying Mother Nature…
Well then, encourage people to eat less fauna and to eat more flora instead.
Not the world just Asians, they will destroy this planet.
This is terrifying for the fishermen trying to make a living and the squid.
If we could all see with clarity, the insanity of our actions, then we would be horrified. Squid fishing, insanity. Octopus fishing, insanity. At least 420,000 tonnes, which equates to around 91 million individuals, are caught each year - more than 10 times the amount caught in 1950. Elon Musk is constantly advocating that the world must focus on expanding the population of Humans race and states that resources are plentiful.
More people need to watch this !
i want to cry because of that one squid, that spewed out ink, when it was pulled up.
it wanted so badly to scare away whatever attacked him
Seeing how people treat the world and the masses don't care hurts. I wish it could've gotten away as well. This isn't sustainable and I'm sure they probably just let them suffocate. I wish china cared. I know all countries aren't blameless but China has no regard as a government for the environment or the people. Make money by any means basically.
very well done, our dystopian future depicted very well here.
Beautiful prose. Thanks for bringing attention to this.
I love the typography of The New Yorker. 😅
Thank you for all the motivation I needed to never order calamari appetizers ever again! It's delicious deep fried but if that's all I have to do to wash my hands clean of all the evil, violence and corruption that has become inherent and all pervasive in the squid fishing industry . . . I will gladly pay that price and make that exchange a 1000 times over. But now you have me scared about looking into the shellfish industry because lobster crab and shrimp are my favorite food . . . That is a much more difficult bargain . . . Also to ANY AND ALL looking into this industry for employment, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do yourself a potentially life-saving favor and triple check the legal writing and specific language used in your contract! If you're illiterate and that means paying someone who can read to do it for you, it's worth it but make sure it's someone you can trust like a family member or someone you've known for most your life that hasn't tried to cheat you.
Sigh. I am off the calamari too. More awareness needs to be spread.
Absolutely breathtaking. Every aspect of this.
China is so dedicated this is crazy and sad at the same time
thank you for telling this story.
I love so much the video because it shares import information about fishery. Is it possible a subtitle in Spanish? I need to share with my people, but they don't understand English.
The Chinese fishing fleet have been fishing near other countries such as south America. They will continue to fish in other countries waters unless they are stopped. Countries must protect their waters.
They are greedy
@@nidagus2448 They are hungry
these ships are in the international water, if within a country economic zone these ships will be seized.
7:20 This Poor animal is saying “Help me I have been abducted by Aliens”
What makes one squidboat more brutal than the others?
Great story telling thank you
Thanks to Sea Shepherd and the crew of the Ocean Warrior
The intro is just fantastic
Wow, this is beautifully done!
beautifully done
Such amazing cinematography and colouring
Thank you for Enlighten me 💔
As a squid myself, I approve this message.
i knew it was going to be awful bot wow. i'm not sure I even have the word for this. we are the only problem with the planet.
If we could all see with clarity, the insanity of our actions, then we would be horrified. Squid fishing, insanity. Octopus fishing, insanity. Get off it then.
Thanks Rotten Mango for opening my eyes to this. Not that I eat squid. But i certainly NEVER will now
I buy these china fished squids. They label it as "packed in vietnam" to avoid sanctions. It is 1/4th the price of local squid.
Your part of the problem
Excellent documentary the oceans will stop producing but before that will be the rivers we are very close
lobsters and salmon are also high in demand but they are still plentiful because we use proper sustaining methods and limit the amount we catch.
its a bit sad that this doesnt get more views...its shot so well and cinematography is insane, felt like i was watching a movie!
Thank you Rotten Mango 🥭
I had to hear the hissing myself 🦑
I already don't eat Pork, Red Meat, or Chicken....but now this is making me not want to eat seafood =O
What it’s not making you want to eat Chinese? 😅
YT knew I watched Rotten Mango 👀
Why did it end the video like this now its feels like it needs a part 2
First, the locusts completely wipe out their immediate surroundings, then they move on to the next opportunity.
It is subtle but also very obvious; the narrator's story about his father is actually the experience of the squid !!
Bold of you to assume that I have always eaten well.
Im here after watching stefanie Soo video about the squid fishing deep sea like if U also here cuz of that
wow!!!! this is insane!!!
I don't understand how this is sustainable. 1:39
only 1080p?
Wow, what an amazing squid boat, with completely automatic fishing gear...👍
This hurts watching this….
take everything, take it all, take, take, take
I dont understand why people eat squid :( I feel sorry for them, I wonder how theyre not extinct already. Theyre eyes are so huge, I feel I can see into their soul and their suffering.
So scary
🔥🔥🔥
Acojonante
I AM ENGLISH NEVER ATE SQUID OR OCTOPUS OR EELS ETC ONLY FISH COD, ORGANIC SALMON. BUT HOW ANYONE COULD EAT THESE OCEAN LIFE ESPECIALY OCTOPUS SUCH AMAZINGLY INTELLIGENT CREATURES
Me too
Why does the shop not sell Vapes?
Horrible reality...... Perfect setting for some lovecraftian horror.
Why is there a terrified dog @ 7:20
its crazy to me, cause squid is gross a f as far as food goes
These guys should be making 100,000 usd a year with how much money they are pulling in.
Anyone else wish they had a submarine with unlimited fuel and ammo.
Never had sqid or calamari and most definatly never will now.
Squids are the opposite of endangered... their populations are booming because of the warming climate and the absence of natural predators such as Tuna. It is environmentally healthy to fish as much squid as possible. They together with jellyfish are in danger of overwhelming the oceans
silly comment as we have wiped out tuna, shark all predatory fish populations so your answer is wipe out all else, if you did that then it will be sea worms and chips. solution is stop over fishing the predators as they will bring back the balance
The fishing isn't the problem confronted here, it is the poor working conditions and forced labor of the crew members. I don't care about the squid, but the industry is rife with human exploitation.
Angry horses don,t hiss!!
What a strange saying
As the indian says it only stops when you realize u can not eat money
😢😭
Poor OCEAN THIS COMMENT IS GONNA BE REMEMBERED YEAR 2050 ❤
One of China's Industrial fishing boats can catch 25% of Britain's allotted Fishing Quota in one Fill..
Why do they fish like that instead of using nets?
Yes, you "go farther than anyone else"... to destroy our planet... bravo.
And then there were none
Interesting and depressing.
Just another food to add to the ever growing list that I do not consume on ethical grounds. The way things are going I am will end up a vegetarian.
No more squid for me, when will we realize that 8 billion is already too much.
This ship needs to be abolished!
Lol...all of you saying you wont eat squid typing on your Iphones while wearing Nikes. This isnt the worst industry you contribute to if you eat squid, not by a long shot.
IF eVERYONE COULD PLEASE GET THEIR HEADS AROUND THE CONCEPT THAT IS REALITY- FINITUDE...squid are not "infinite"...the word gets abused, the numbers get skewed, the fact is all that is on this planet is FINITE.
Its a reality - China has a super huge fishing fleet and wherever they go they decimate the area - and these Chinese fishing boats are also quasi- military boats and each one can be outfitted with missiles and weapons - so basically its a 1200 ship fleet Chinese military operation and it would take a huge amount of warships to defeat them! Beware!
Pretty sure these squids play a huge role in the ecosystem. What would happen if it’s depleted?
Wow. You really brought the brutality to light there. Expensive cigarettes. This must have been edited by the CCP.
We are devouring our planet and all on it including ourselves
深海,黑暗,触须,不可名状....克苏鲁的凝望
Deep Sea, Dark Hollow, Sticky Tentacles, the Unnamable....Gazed by Cthulhu
Yall better watch out for Liu Guiduo. Get diced up like a squid and thrown over.
Calamari anyone ? Brilliant video, thank you !
When you gotta feed China's population (estimated at 1,425,671,352 people at mid year, 2023, it's a rough go).
China's population is equivalent to 17.72% of the total world population.
I heard they are mostly imported to countries such as America & Europe
Lawless fisherman.
Very selective for target species, little by catch. And "" hook and line "". Example of modern factory fishing. Nobody fished this way until refrigeration invented. Many countries do it. Problem is not enough statistical data to calculate catch and populations. We don’t know if overfishing. No data ?? 😢😢😢😢
Vegetarians unite!
why are they allowed to board a dog on ship?
Everything eats squid, taking out the base of the food chain, overfishing. in everyone else’s seas, is why there will be no fah in the oceans by 2048. Watch the film 2048 The End
