- A deep-water port located in Chancay, Peru, is set to transform the country's Pacific coast and connect South America directly to Asia. The $3.6 billion project has been largely funded by China, providing them with an economic foothold in the region. NBC News' Keir Simmons reports on how the project will reshape Pacific trade.

Suddenly US is concerned about Peru 😂😂😂
@@marshmcclory487 the US gov has never invested one (1), uno, $ in Peru or even in South America. Eventually they give 500K for alimony. However, they give hundreds of billions to Israel and Ukraine...
Wow! Suddenly a bunch of Americans care about the well beings of Peruvians. I never knew they cared so much

Wow! Suddenly a bunch of Chinese care about the well being of Peruvians. I never knew they cared so much
"In Americas back yard" such disgusting colonialist hubris.
This is Spanish America, we are not the America's backyard. Peruvian culture is older than USA history. Peru is deeply involved with its own development.
Very hypocritical of the US to be "worried" about this port.
The US was given preferential treatment and assigned an even better location, Corio, for them to also develop a megaport. They've been slow-walking the project for the last 20 years.
In March of 2024, they've begun showing interest in the project again.
They showed interest only because they want to sabotage other people's projects.
Believe me, if China didn't come, the US will continue to do nothing with the port for the next 20 years.
The worry comes from illegal Chinese military actions in the South China Sea against key USA allies. Is that an extension of this policy? In that sense, it is poor reporting by NBC because they failed to make that correlation to the "US worry".
Why is it the US' business? Didn't the USA say Ukraine is a sovereign state that doesn't need permission from Russia for anything? Peru is a sovereign state that doesn't need permission from the USA.
The US has NOT invaded Peru. The US has NOT declared any special rights here. It seems you can't read or think clearly. Are you dain-bramaged?
@@bruzote Maybe you are brain damaged as the US is meddling in Peruvian internal affairs trying to sow chaos and stop economic development.
@@bruzote I think you didn't get his point..
@diegoflores9237 You are confusing actions with concerns. The US has NOT taken threatening action on China or Peru regarding this deal. If there were, you would see economic sanctions on both nations, which has NOT happened. The real US concern stems from Chinese actions claiming international waters in the South China Sea and militarily bullying key US economic allies: Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Korea, Australia. Could there be a connection to that strategy is the bigger question. For now, that is all it is.
Impressive! A $3.5B port will always make an impact
And why is this a problem?
Because it means economic development for Peru which leaves the US with less ability to dominate and exploit Peru. This is the main grievance by the US.
It belongs to China. Don't forget it.

Americans worried about Chinese vessel in Chancay? The Chinese have already a fishing armada few miles away from the coast. That's the real danger in the south pacific ocean.
Wow i've never expected you would care about Chancay port overnight and right now. I must say as a peruvian you noticed this piece of infrastructure too little too late since it's already under construction and we've been noticing it since Vizcarra's administration back in 2019 an I already was suspicious of the project, since China's state owned COSCO would get a 60% share of the port while the local 24 news cycle and the government would brand it as a new opportunity investment.
Not only that but China's reach goes beyond Chancay, from a bridge construction scandal involving Chinese construction companies back in Pedro Castillo's tenure, Sinofarm vaccine scandal in 2020(Vacunagate case which involved the political and economical elites and the Chinese embassy), Chinese energy companies monopolizing the electricity grid here last year iirc, The opening of a subsidiary of the Bank of China in 2020, ownership of open pit mines here and there and China surpasing the US to become the 1st trading partner. I could go on but this comment is already large and i hope you get the point that i'm making... that you're noticing it too late and it is hard to reverse course.

NBC doesn't tell you that Peru has to pay China back the loan it took to build that port and when they don't, China through its contractual language will be able to take over this port and use it as they see fit, including docking military warships. China is doing this to Countries in Africa as well, as part of its belt and rail initiative. China knows most of these countries will not be able to pay back the loans, thus China is defacto building these ports for themselves.

@@robocop581Called debt-entrapment. That’s by and large different from traditional loaning.
why does it raise concerns? do you think china is going to attempt to invade peru??? HAHAHAAHAHA DOUBTFUL.
Because China uses these ports as military bases, as they are preparing for was with the US.
ANY powerful country will try to use a port deal like this to manipulate the smaller country for the benefit of the larger country. It's that simple. Making deals like this entails risk for the smaller country, brings benefits, and the deal may create problems or benefits for other countries as well. Is that hard to understand? Change brings risks. With this port now giving China the chance to project their Navy, that is a concern for people who have the responsibility of understanding that risk (including citizens of all affected countries).
could you possibly provide a more vague answer? @@bruzote
You cannot be serious 🤣🤣🤣@@dlight9849
@@timallison8560 - You want simplicity for your simple mind? It doesn't work that way. Complexity 1 - All of the Chinese workers. China places many CCP members in these jobs. They sometimes are directly spying, but often just cooperative with their government to advance ad hoc requests and agendas. Complexity 2 - politicians in the port and associated with it will be tempted with further *legal* deals that help China gain more power and influence. The politicians will face budget constraints and be offered further debt relief in exchange for more Chinese financial leverage and control of infrastructure. They can do things you didn't even think of, like using technology and methods that enable Chinese smuggling to take place. They can run WiFi networks that place spy ware on devices in the port. This is not an uncommon tactic in areas where the CCP's government agencies ultimately control the radiofrequency spectrum. Complexity 3 - China has a direct opportunity to allow more Chinese ships than would otherwise be approved. Complexity 4 - Along with #2, the port brings bribery opportunities. All ports do. These opportunities, though, can favor the Chinese government. It can coordinate the bribery efforts with other objectives. This creates more damage than situations in ports where various parties of conflicting or at least uncorrelated interests are engaged in the corruption. The damage ends up being less strategic.
Bad for peru
Great for Peru as a Peruvian I can say this. For too long Latin American countries have made deals with the devil, the US
Not really. Very good indeed.
Chuck Fina.
It’s fairly easy to understand Peru, Columbia a lot of these south, and central American countries are socialist eventually within 10 years they will be communist just like China, the winners here are not the citizens of Peru. The winners are the politicians in the Chinese, and it wouldn’t matter if the US would win in there, because the same thing would’ve happened the losers here are the citizens of Peru in the southern and central American countries. These politicians are the central and South American countries are the ones that are going to come out with a boatload of payback and money. The people they’re the ones that are going to get the middle finger. Again the politicians are the winners here.
That is not how that works. Neo liberal capitalism the winners are the politicians/rich which get to enrich them self from capitalist donors/oligarchs while under communism it is precisely the people that benefit while the oligarchs lose their political domination.
They said the same thing in the 1950s.
Good luck Peru for many projects undertaken by china have flawed project study at the expense of host country for the benefit of china PLA army 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Don't fool yourself. That shipping lane will be able to accommodate China's war ships.
That is how Americans think. The USA already has bases in South America.
US needs to take control of the other mega port of Peru: Corio. The port of Corio will be bigger than Chancay and the US needs to do the same thing China did with Chanchay, it is to invest in the port of Corio and take control of it so US can set a balance in the domination of the mega ports in south Pacific. But US cannot wait any longer. US needs to do it NOW!
Definitely agreed!
As a Peruvian American, we dropped the ball in Peru and investing in the country with so much potential, favoring Chile over Peru…and if we don’t act quickly our grasp of global strength in South America will crumble. Peru is a strategic country and China wants an ally when war hits. I’m sad as well for Peru because The infrastructure of the country could benefit immensely from American might and not crappy Chinese products. Peruvians can still be won over….lets not fail this great investment.
All countries are strategic. Chile is more important because that's where Pisco comes from.
Ba-dum. Just kidding. I am quite familiar with the bizarre insanity of the Chilean claims to that. But, from a more serious political perspective, how is Peru more important than Chile, or Columbia, or even Bolivia (for the lithium alone)? The US tries to juggle a world of countries to influence, and picking favorites requires proper justification. Not that such choices are properly done, but they should be. But why Peru above others? Maybe the US is interested in the amount of coastline. Or the mining interests (ironically, taken from Peru by Chile during their war long ago).
As a British-Peruvian
Peruvians needs to do what benefit them
Don't be sad Chinese people manufacture most of the products of Americans so they might be doing something good
