Joaquin Phoenix On The Traditional Rules Of Acting And Why He Has His Own

- For acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix, the acting process is a mystery. The three-time Oscar nominee says the idea of getting into character is something he's never quite understood and doesn't want to. Speaking with Salon's Andrew O'Hehir about playing a traumatized veteran in writer and director Lynne Ramsay’s “You Were Never Really Here," Phoenix shares why making unconscious decisions is where he finds his characters.
“I try not to make rules about the character," Phoenix told SalonTV. "I don’t like that idea [of saying] ‘my character would never do that.’ I don’t know what the f**k they’d do. Anything’s possible." Phoenix took home the best actor award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for the role in the thrilling "You Were Never Really Here."
He opens up to SalonTV about the pacing of his career and why he often takes breaks from acting, then works intensely on several projects at a time. As far as developing a style to his work, Phoenix doesn’t get hung up on defining himself, but his non-definitions are those of a true artist.

Phoenix is going to be the next great Joker
You was right!
This aged very well
I would like to think his big brother would be proud of him.
Go ahead.
BE PROUD RIVER!!!
Are you referring to River ?
yes, he definitely would. their voices are so similar like their lisps
Still one of the most underrated and underappreciated actors out there....
I'd be terrified to interview him. He's got so much power and dominance in every conversation and you never know what he's thinking. You can clearly see the interviewer is treading very carefully.....
Seriously, this man is gold
Stella Bendris he picked up where his brother left off. Dude is savage.
One of thiose rare actors that...when you see them in an interview...you cannot believe they don't act exactly like they do in their roles. He's that good.
Joaquin has a haunting stare. Great actor...haunting stare.
I think that he's so instinct based and talented enough to have such good instincts, that it's hard for him to put into words. I think he also tries to avoid making it more complicated than it has to be, which is pretty much the opposite of any drama school. He's going to be great as the joker.
He should have won Oscar for Johnny Cash!!!!He was robed...his heart and soul was in that role...
I fucking love this man. He's an inspiration, a creative and sincerely thoughtful artist, worthy of admiration.
Gladiator was my favorite movie and role of his. Such a masterpiece of cinema.
This interviewer is also great. He asked practical questions and patiently waited for the replies and only interjected when it was necessary. 10/10 interview.
Joaquin Phoenix would make history with his Joker movie. He's totally possessed by the Joker's spirit! Amazing actor!
if you look other older interviews, you can see Joaquin is still same. Strange, weird, quiet and dark. He has these Joker vibes . Great choice for this character.
Joaquin is one of the realest, coolest actors working today.
He is such a great guy. I looooove his voice. I know he feels alot of hurt in his heart but he needs to be at peace.
If he ever teaches I would love to take acting classes from him. His performances are not predictable. Just love it.
He's really, really beautiful isn't he...? I don't think I've ever seen anyone with such a translucent sadness to them as it is for him. Anyone, except for his brother. I have a huge poster of River in front of my bed and I see it in him, too. Allot of people say he doesn't take after River at all, and yes they are very different, almost exact mirror images of each other, actually (which makes their connection even more fascinating to me), but if you listen to River talk and then listen carefully to his brother you will find that their voice is very similar. Not in tune, but in the way they both finish their words and in their CHOICE of words even, in the smallest things. There's a softness that they both share in a way that if they screamed it would still feel like a whisper. Two beautiful souls in two beautiful bodies. I love him, both of them.
I love these types of interviews with Joaquin. He seems more himself, and so "normal" that it is great to see.
Absolutely fantastic interviewer, really appreciated how open needed the conversation was so that Joaquin could speak without feeling too cornered.
cant wait for JOKER and the oscar buzz
That interviewer is so nervous
If he was at least he made the right choice in shutting up and letting Joaquin talk. So many interviews don't let the guest talk.
I wouldn't call this trashing, but he just doesn't know how to articulate how it works. Respect. He's brilliant.
THE MASTER.
I can't believe this is the little kid from Parenthood
Dude impresses me so much.
Joaquin Pheonix is one of the best actors of our time and I'm always excited about every movie he's in. This is a lovely interview, thanks Andrew for being a great host!
The interviewer keeps bringing up his own personal theories then asking whether Phoenix agrees, instead of asking about Phoenix' own theories. Funny.
joaquin phoenix is like the mike tyson of the movie industry! a true artist and performer!
He's so interesting. And an amazing performer.
protect joaquin at all cost
the last 4 minutes of the interview were epic! :D
This guy is really intelligent. Impressive mastery of craft and descriptions. Awesome interview.
Love Joaquin
What a fantastic, intimate interview! Kudos to the interviewer.
Whoelse here after the JOKER Trailer?
Guy is a genius in how he digs up and project the depth of his characters in a crystalline, and sublime way, simultaneously...
Joaquin’s Joker is Joaqker than ever...
Joaquin and Tom Hardy are probably the best actors of this generation (meaning, actors that rose to prominence during the 21st century).
Wonderful actor. Best of his generation bar none. Including Daniel Day Lewis. Blows everyone out the park.
I havn't seen "You were never really here", and I've always admired Joaquin and his work. Acceptionally the only actor that really cought my attention with the skill and dedication he puts into the characters he plays. I don't know where my life has been because Phoenix is my favorite actor and I havn't been updating myself with his latest movies. After seeing Joker and seeing his name pop up I had to see it and man was I fuckin surprised how phenomenal he was. Actually I wasn't surprised. He's that good! Joker was an unforgettable experience and it moved me. It affected me greatly. The last time I saw a movie starring Joaquin was Walk The Line. Great movie and I'm really going to try and dedicate some more time watching films he's in. I hate being so distracted with everything in life that I miss out on the best. Biggest admirer lol You can't go wrong with Joaquin honestly. Definitely will watch "You were never really here" in the future.
I have respect for this interviewer. This was a great interview!
Instead of the interviewer telling Joaquin what he thinks Joaquin thinks... he should just ask him first and let Joaquin respond
I need to watch more stuff with him in it, guy was great in Her.
True Artist
“Or Whatever you are” ??? What a TERRIBLE INTRODUCTION!!!!
Watching Phoenix interviews is like listening to the two magicians talking about the guy doing the fishbowl trick in The Prestige. Phoenix is the guy doing the fishbowl trick.
" or whatever else you are " LMAO 😂
The fact that he’s doing an interview with someone who has only 2.4k subs shows what kind of guy he is.
man that ending! you can see how much Joaquin hatttteess interviews haha
i felt that exact way about Joker, when it came out it didnt really catch my eye like oh gee another joker gona kill it but just recently i just watched the movie on Netflix i was blown away and i think that was because of Jaoquin Phoenix such a great actor
He was amazing in walk the line
Love you Joaq 😍😘❤
Chris Phoenix , and I love you if you are what your pic say, I m into looks
He should play Joel from The Last Of Us
This is a good interview I actually like your asking some unique questions.
The GOAT!
He’s a genius in the fact that he knows that he shouldn’t expect anything out of anyone especially his character that he’s playing. It is an art, he’s trying to do what River did but he’s as good if not better than River. He’s awkward but that’s how Jesus probably felt and made others feel when he spoke
I do love Joaquin... :-)
What is it about him?
It's that you can't out-peen the joe-keen.
Marcus Aurelius neglected him as a child
He's gifted
Maranatha Truth a lot of actors are weird. Especially the greats
He’s a Scorpio and he’s also probably not neurotypical. His brain is wired differently and he experiences the world differently. The things he values aren’t the things the world places value on. He doesn’t have a lot of artifice and he doesn’t care to lie or be inauthentic, even in his acting roles. He also seems to be a kind caring person with a wry sense of humor but he also has a commanding presence and takes his work seriously even if he doesn’t love the interviewing aspects.
‘my character would never do that.’ So true! We all do things we never thought we'd do. Except Luke in TLJ.
He absolutely fucking does!!!!!!
8:38 Bro, everything is inspired by Taxi Driver.
Love this interview. Really honest.
I just love that man
0:45 That sounds like a tone Joker would put it.
I love you Joaquin
the joker!!
Joaquin can tap into his own dimension where he knows all, sees all.
He’s so relaxed in this interview as compared to other ones :))
you were never really here was a good flick
I’ve been a lot of interviews of Joaquin and was this filmed before Joker? If so He lost weight like crazy fast, i’ve seen photos on the set of Joker that apparently were taken on September/October of 2018
See the video " Walking Phoenix "
I'm not a big fan of Salon, but I have to say that this was on of the better "press tour interviews" I've ever seen. It was a ittle awkward but Andrew asked really interesting questions and not just the standard "What was your favourite scene?" or "did you and your co-stars party every night" He actually asked interesting questions bith about the movie and about Joaquin.
Is it just me or do some these guys just have an amazing eye for getting into really good movies I mean Joaquin, Ethan Hawke, Decaprio, Daniel Day Lewis, Christian Bale? Has any of those guys been in anything terrible in the past decade. Even Ryan Gosling has won me over big time I mean his career trajectory could've have been so shitty considering how he started but damn did him or his agent make some sly decisions.
Exactly. Art is about using your emotional, intuitive femininity.
Save the practical, logical, calculated masculine for you To Do List.
Thanks
This dude is gold
Am I the only one on here who sees the similarities between Joaquin Phoenix and Morrissey ? I see it in what Morrissey does in his songs and persona, but I also see it in Joaquin's movies... Joaquin Phoenix could play Morrissey very WELL indeed, as I'm sure as there is a visual similarity..
es el mejor. junto con otros actores!!!
His life isn't a tradegy.
It's a comedy
Stuart Bloom?
I've seen it,,pretty wild MOVIE!
A man who always trying to get to the Phoenix...
Get to Phoenix ;-)
He's a mountain top water drop
My uncle looks like him. Not joking
Hi
This man is authentic, and dangerous. ..He is scary to be around in real time ..That being said, he’s amazing in film ..Joachim I could say the same about Daniel DayLewis, but Daniel is careful to be considerate to persons he interacts with, he is master of his domain. Joachim is free range.. 100%. I’ll watch him from a safe distance ...
She reached out lol
Nice glasses man Lol
Film acting is nothing more than reacting and letting go...let impulses thrive and just do one thing always...'Listen'...
Worst way to introduce somebody 💀, great show nonetheless.
walkin phoenix?
Is he goin to be the joker in new film ?
Ultra G done deal.
Yarp
Daniel Day-Lewis is my favorite actor hands down. However Pheonix easily should have won the Oscar for Best Actor for The Master. That was a tour de force if I've ever seen one.
He and Tom Hardy need to co-star in a western. Like a gritty, emotional, violent western.
YEP! I totally agree.
YES
Scott K well, we’re getting something close with Sisters Brothers with the great Jake Gylenhaal😺
Scott K yes a Blood Meridian film with those two would be amazing.
He was in a western that just came out with John C Riley called The Sister Brothers I believe. Looked pretty good.
Joaquin will win an Oscar for the joker 💯
It just shows that Joaquin is all about the experience making the film and nothing about the wrapped up product. Lol
Kinda like Christian Bale
My God! My all time favourite actor in the world is playing my all time favourite villain in a film! "Joker" Now my life is complete!😁
He really doesn't seem at all like the "deep dark tragic" person the media has made him out to be. He seems like a happy, grateful cool dude. I don't like how the media has made him out to look like some dark brooding nut. He seems totally normal.
Joaquin DOESNT LIKE COMPLIMENTS!!!!
I love how humble Joaquin is, he truly is an artist! Everything he does is right on and thoughtfully acted.
Joaquin picks up on the energy of the interviewer and if he likes your honesty and truthfulness only then Joaquin opens up and plays along with a true conversation. In other words he doesn’t like to waste time and words for the sake of publicity. Love you Joaquin!!!! 💕
one of the best actors of all time
00:05 Nice intro. Actor, producer.....whatever
