Joaquin Phoenix On The Traditional Rules Of Acting And Why He Has His Own

- For acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix, the acting process is a mystery. The three-time Oscar nominee says the idea of getting into character is something he's never quite understood and doesn't want to. Speaking with Salon's Andrew O'Hehir about playing a traumatized veteran in writer and director Lynne Ramsay’s “You Were Never Really Here," Phoenix shares why making unconscious decisions is where he finds his characters.
“I try not to make rules about the character," Phoenix told SalonTV. "I don’t like that idea [of saying] ‘my character would never do that.’ I don’t know what the f**k they’d do. Anything’s possible." Phoenix took home the best actor award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for the role in the thrilling "You Were Never Really Here."
He opens up to SalonTV about the pacing of his career and why he often takes breaks from acting, then works intensely on several projects at a time. As far as developing a style to his work, Phoenix doesn’t get hung up on defining himself, but his non-definitions are those of a true artist.

Having worked on his latest movie with him (including sharing a scene as an extra) I can 100000% say he is the nicest, most down to earth, humble, friendly actor. He really is a great guy.
I'd be terrified to interview him. He's got so much power and dominance in every conversation and you never know what he's thinking. You can clearly see the interviewer is treading very carefully.....
Outline of Acting Topics:
5:19 "React in the Moment vs. Planning Ahead"
7:12 "Being in Character"
9:11 "Not Any Rules"
11:20 "Process of Creating Realistic Moments"
13:11 "Method Research"
15:15 "Timing of Projects"
16:35 "Being in Character Off Set"
18:03 "How He Chooses Movies"
19:54 "Social Impact of Acting"
I would like to think his big brother would be proud of him.
Go ahead.
BE PROUD RIVER!!!
Are you referring to River ?
yes, he definitely would. their voices are so similar like their lisps
He and Tom Hardy need to co-star in a western. Like a gritty, emotional, violent western.
YEP! I totally agree.
YES
Scott K well, we’re getting something close with Sisters Brothers with the great Jake Gylenhaal😺
Scott K yes a Blood Meridian film with those two would be amazing.
He was in a western that just came out with John C Riley called The Sister Brothers I believe. Looked pretty good.
Phoenix is going to be the next great Joker
Joaquin will win an Oscar for the joker 💯
Still one of the most underrated and underappreciated actors out there....
Daniel Day-Lewis is my favorite actor hands down. However Pheonix easily should have won the Oscar for Best Actor for The Master. That was a tour de force if I've ever seen one.
Seriously, this man is gold
Stella Bendris he picked up where his brother left off. Dude is savage.
One of thiose rare actors that...when you see them in an interview...you cannot believe they don't act exactly like they do in their roles. He's that good.
I think that he's so instinct based and talented enough to have such good instincts, that it's hard for him to put into words. I think he also tries to avoid making it more complicated than it has to be, which is pretty much the opposite of any drama school. He's going to be great as the joker.
He really doesn't seem at all like the "deep dark tragic" person the media has made him out to be. He seems like a happy, grateful cool dude. I don't like how the media has made him out to look like some dark brooding nut. He seems totally normal.
Joaquin picks up on the energy of the interviewer and if he likes your honesty and truthfulness only then Joaquin opens up and plays along with a true conversation. In other words he doesn’t like to waste time and words for the sake of publicity. Love you Joaquin!!!! 💕
Joaquin has a haunting stare. Great actor...haunting stare.
It just shows that Joaquin is all about the experience making the film and nothing about the wrapped up product. Lol
Kinda like Christian Bale
My God! My all time favourite actor in the world is playing my all time favourite villain in a film! "Joker" Now my life is complete!😁
I fucking love this man. He's an inspiration, a creative and sincerely thoughtful artist, worthy of admiration.
He should have won Oscar for Johnny Cash!!!!He was robed...his heart and soul was in that role...
I love how humble Joaquin is, he truly is an artist! Everything he does is right on and thoughtfully acted.
Gladiator was my favorite movie and role of his. Such a masterpiece of cinema.
one of the best actors of all time
Man, the more interviews I watch of Joaquin the more I think about how I would love to see him do more voice acting! He's got such an interesting and playful voice naturally. There's a child like quality to it at times that seems as though it would work really well in animation.
Joaquin Phoenix would make history with his Joker movie. He's totally possessed by the Joker's spirit! Amazing actor!
if you look other older interviews, you can see Joaquin is still same. Strange, weird, quiet and dark. He has these Joker vibes . Great choice for this character.
He and Daniel Day-Lewis could play brothers in a movie. Any movie. I'd watch the hell out of it.
Absolutely fantastic interviewer, really appreciated how open needed the conversation was so that Joaquin could speak without feeling too cornered.
He is such a great guy. I looooove his voice. I know he feels alot of hurt in his heart but he needs to be at peace.
This interviewer is also great. He asked practical questions and patiently waited for the replies and only interjected when it was necessary. 10/10 interview.
I love these types of interviews with Joaquin. He seems more himself, and so "normal" that it is great to see.
If he ever teaches I would love to take acting classes from him. His performances are not predictable. Just love it.
Joaquin is one of the realest, coolest actors working today.
That interviewer is so nervous
If he was at least he made the right choice in shutting up and letting Joaquin talk. So many interviews don't let the guest talk.
honesty is precious
I can't believe this is the little kid from Parenthood
"You've made this as painless as possible"
I loved this interview.
He has such a natural talent. It’s amazing.
He's really, really beautiful isn't he...? I don't think I've ever seen anyone with such a translucent sadness to them as it is for him. Anyone, except for his brother. I have a huge poster of River in front of my bed and I see it in him, too. Allot of people say he doesn't take after River at all, and yes they are very different, almost exact mirror images of each other, actually (which makes their connection even more fascinating to me), but if you listen to River talk and then listen carefully to his brother you will find that their voice is very similar. Not in tune, but in the way they both finish their words and in their CHOICE of words even, in the smallest things. There's a softness that they both share in a way that if they screamed it would still feel like a whisper. Two beautiful souls in two beautiful bodies. I love him, both of them.
THE MASTER.
cant wait for JOKER and the oscar buzz
I wasn't a big fan until I saw him in "The Master."
Holy shit. That was amazing acting and he made it look easy.
The interviewer keeps bringing up his own personal theories then asking whether Phoenix agrees, instead of asking about Phoenix' own theories. Funny.
Dude impresses me so much.
I wouldn't call this trashing, but he just doesn't know how to articulate how it works. Respect. He's brilliant.
Best leading man in Hollywood
Can't freaking wait to see him as the joker
love how star struck this dude is
He is unique.
Joaquin is the ultimate outsider - he's like an alien whose been freshly cast in the role of a human. Love each and every one of his performances.
When you have raw talent, there's no way to really explain it. Joaquin is simply amazing and the greatest actor of his generation imo.❤️🙂
Joaquin Pheonix is one of the best actors of our time and I'm always excited about every movie he's in. This is a lovely interview, thanks Andrew for being a great host!
Joaquin DOESNT LIKE COMPLIMENTS!!!!
He and his brother are legends when it comes to acting
Beautiful human being and a wonderful actor he does it for me every time.Bless him
A real artist can get lost in the art. The ego is surrendered
But there are actors who are just more like a stronger version of themselves like Wayne, McQueen Eastwood etc. That can also be great
"I don't know what you mean." Well said!
joaquin phoenix is like the mike tyson of the movie industry! a true artist and performer!
To me he always looked like someone who had a lot to cope with and understands human nature deeply. He has set him self free. Just like Jim Carrey.
Great interview, and cool to see him relaxed enough to answer comfortably. Well done
protect joaquin at all cost
He's so natural and I love it💖
He has deeply repressed traumas which colour almost every facet of his thought process, but which fuel his creativity and emotional insight. Fascinating individual.
Really tho any other actor makes, I'm still here, and it's plausible to suggest that it could kill their careers. The fact that his career continued and is going from strength to strength is a testament to his talent and willingness to put art above himself. Definitely one of the best in is generation.
He’s nailing it as the Joker
this man got to sit down with the Joker and live to talk about it 👏
He got to sit down with Joaquin and live to talk about it, which is much more impressive, I would say.
Leo dicaprio and him are my favourite actors
He's so interesting. And an amazing performer.
I adore Joaquin favorite movies: Her and Walk The Line. He's gonna kill at as joker too
I'm not a big fan of Salon, but I have to say that this was on of the better "press tour interviews" I've ever seen. It was a ittle awkward but Andrew asked really interesting questions and not just the standard "What was your favourite scene?" or "did you and your co-stars party every night" He actually asked interesting questions bith about the movie and about Joaquin.
I'm in love for this man.. ❤️ my favourite actor
One of the greatest actors ever!!!!!!!!!!
Love Joaquin
Joaquin and Tom Hardy are probably the best actors of this generation (meaning, actors that rose to prominence during the 21st century).
the last 4 minutes of the interview were epic! :D
Joaquin is the greatest of his generation no doubt (rip Philip S. Hoffman). But also the interviewer is PERFECT, he ask the same questions that I would ask to Phoenix
I liked this film. As the interviewer said, I will watch anything Joaquin is in regardless of sudject matter. And based on this interview I am going to watch You Were Never Really Here again.☺
00:05 Nice intro. Actor, producer.....whatever
Most underated actor ever
What a fantastic, intimate interview! Kudos to the interviewer.
Instead of the interviewer telling Joaquin what he thinks Joaquin thinks... he should just ask him first and let Joaquin respond
This guy is really intelligent. Impressive mastery of craft and descriptions. Awesome interview.
Whoelse here after the JOKER Trailer?
Guy is a genius in how he digs up and project the depth of his characters in a crystalline, and sublime way, simultaneously...
Joaquin’s Joker is Joaqker than ever...
phenomenal actor
“Or Whatever you are” ??? What a TERRIBLE INTRODUCTION!!!!
I have respect for this interviewer. This was a great interview!
True Artist
"Her" is gold for Joaquin,I'm Still Here,Her,Inherent Vice,The Sisters Brothers,River,Heaven Bless His Soul should be very proud indeed:)......
" or whatever else you are " LMAO 😂
man that ending! you can see how much Joaquin hatttteess interviews haha
One of a kind..
I need to watch more stuff with him in it, guy was great in Her.
De Nero, day Lewis, joaquin
Skip De Nero. He just plays De Nero.
Joaquin has no where near the range of Day Lewis! No where ! Lweis can go out of character easliy from Last of the Mohicans to Gangs of New York, to Lincoln to There Will be Blood! De Nero is great for the same reason as Joaquin he is a good leading actor as in he plays himself, like Humphrey Bogard, James Cagney, Clarke Gable!
nice pick!
You forgot Carrot Top.
Day Lewis, Joaquin, De Niro
This is a good interview I actually like your asking some unique questions.
I hope he shows up to accept his Oscar for The Joker. That trailer has Academy Award written all over it.
This interview would be pretty epic if they put little bells on all of the interviewer's fingers. We wouldn't be able to hear anything than bells ringing, but still.
Such a good interview
Wonderful actor. Best of his generation bar none. Including Daniel Day Lewis. Blows everyone out the park.
Watching Phoenix interviews is like listening to the two magicians talking about the guy doing the fishbowl trick in The Prestige. Phoenix is the guy doing the fishbowl trick.
The fact that he’s doing an interview with someone who has only 2.4k subs shows what kind of guy he is.
This is like a free master class
I love how grounded JP is. He’s so chill lol.
