Joaquin Phoenix On Meeting Johnny Cash | Late Night with Conan O’Brien

It was Johnny Cash himself who specifically wanted Joaquin to play him in the movie. That's the ultimate compliment.
Joaquin should do a cover of Hurt, signing as Cash...I think it would be pretty good.

For some reason he seems alot more relaxed and comfortable with conan. Not like some of his other interviews. Its nice to see
sly jungle Many celebrities appear that way on Conan. I think Conan is just a more genuine person than the other late night hosts. I feel he honestly enjoys meeting new people and getting to know them beyond a surface level.
That's the power of Conan
They Understand Each Other Means Both Got European Origins
Because Conan is the only host that's actually good at his job.
Honestly Conan’s social skills are off the charts hence why he is such a good host. He has a very disarming charisma to him.
I feel like Conan is the only talk show host who should interview Joaquin. He always seemed more comfortable on Conan's show compared to others.
Was he also weird in most talkshows back then? I thought he was not awkward in this video because he wasn't awkward back then.
@@kenz2756 He wasn't weird back then just introverted as far as I've noticed. He's never been a fan of doing interviews on talk shows (which even Conan briefly mentions) and since the I'm Still Here film he's been deliberately messing with interviewers. But I personally don't mind how weird he is now, it makes the interviews unpredictable.
@@Missjunebugfreak Messing with the host just doesn't seem fun to me, makes me feel uncomfortable for the host lol. I can't imagine him ever doing that to conan though, I mean seriously, conan's made the most awkardest moment not awkward, I imagine if Joaquin messes with him conan would mess with him right back.
@@kenz2756 I think that's why it would work well with Conan, because he's able to roll with pretty much anything so if Joaquin tried to mess with him, it would just turn into something comedic. Conan knows how to improvise and bring out the best in a lot of his more introverted guests.
Joaquin doesn't like doing interviews that much and only does them when he has a film to promote. That is why his awkwardness comes off as weird or strange to some people. He cares more about the craft of acting and doing good work than just being famous and the need to be seen all the time.
He absolutely should have won an Oscar. Incredible performance.
He was robbed. Its the best performance I ever saw

Same here buddy
@@tanzudorje8010 He was so memorable there. I hadn't seen any of his films until Her came out and then, even like 10 years later, I recognized it's the same actor. I think it's the intensity of his acting plus how his eyes+eyebrows look.
Well it might have also been the fact that I was about 12 years old when I saw that very sadistic, but also weirdly attractive character and it might have left a mark :D

For me it was the depressed character he played in Two Lovers...he’s really a great actor
Phoenix was absolutely robbed of an Oscar! He so embodied the role that his voice dropped a whole octave. They had pre-recorded the instrumental parts of the music in his original range, and when he was ready to record they had to re-record the accompaniments.
Seeing Joaquin actually enjoy an interview is really refreshing. Shows Conan's class.

Yes, that was so funny!
He couldn't do Cash's voice in the film - not even his speaking voice! Listen to a Johnny Cash live album - St. Quentin is my favourite - and listen carefully when he says (as he always did) "Hello - my name's Johnny Cash". Then listen to Phoenix attempt that in the film - not even vaguely close. I can only assume that the people who were so impressed by Mr Phoenix in this film had no idea what Mr Cash sounded like, both singing & speaking. Such a waste....

@@stratman3237 oh my god, Joaquin didnt perfectly recreate Johnny cash’s voice? What a big deal
Being that johnny cash is known for his voice (and lyrics) He sounded nothing like him
Conan is a step above other late night hosts and this is a great example of why. Instead of being negative or dismissive of Joaquin’s eccentricity (the language thing), he embraces it wholeheartedly and encourages Phoenix, making him feel more at home.
Conan is pretty social awkward too, something he was self aware of growing up. It’s made him much more empathetic to guys like Joaquin

@@ohwellwhateverr I think both applies to Joaquin Phoenix. He seems rather immature to me, and his behaviour is never challenged, just indulged. But maybe that lends itself to making a pretty great actor. Maybe he just has psychological disabilities.
They gave Reese Witherspoon an Oscar for a playing a plucky southern girl, which is who she actually is, but ignored this man’s astonishing performance.
You nailed it, brother! 🎯🙌 And Reese was that year’s Marisa Tomei. 😉😂😂
I think they both should have won Joaquin for Lead and Reese for Supporting they were both astonishing. Phillip Seymour Hoffman won that year for Capote but I actually think Phillip should have won for The Master and Doubt
I agree. Joaquin DESERVED that Oscar! He was amazing…..
Still Reese did amazing having watched this film and the Joker I prefer him getting the Oscar for the Joker as he was amazing in that while he was great in this similar to Reese they both did great. Where as in the Joker he stole the show.
Yeah stinks
This man is criminally underrated as an actor, everything he’s done is nothing short incredible,
His Commodus in Gladiator is extraordinary...

Kind of excessive since you don’t really get to see others play the same role.

Conan realizes that laughter is something people should do together on the same level. He doesn’t try to poke fun or get a cheap laugh. And he’s so warm and friendly and down to earth.
He's confident in his self as well as comedy. Rare.

I’m so glad Joaquin finally got an Oscar [deservedly so] for The Joker & that Reese got one for this role, but I will never understand how he didn’t get one specifically for his amazing performance as Cash. Every time I see the film, I can’t stop thinking about how much he deserved it... I’m sure he was wondering what was there I did wrong to not get it after all the prep, depths he went to, etc to so accurately portray the good & bad in Johnny’s life. That’s why I can’t comprehend how he lost-there wasn’t anything wrong (except for some inaccuracies in the script, but that has nothing to do with him & obviously didn’t get in the way of Reese winning for playing June plus as a film student myself I can understand why they made some of those changes for cinematic reasons).
I mean, Reese played June fantastically too but Joaquin’s portrayal of Johnny was just so on Mark & deep... not to mention all his own personal connections to the character that must have been a very hard emotional journey for himself as he played Johnny. He literally put his whole entire self into playing JR (& the Joker too of course which just highlights his talent & emotional sacrifices as an actor since we all know how tasking that character is to play psychologically especially from Heath Ledger, yet another deserving Oscar and that’s an understatement), but for all of that he so deserved winning that one.
Hollywood seems to always get the awards wrong when it’s obvious who should win. It’s like that purposely select someone that shouldn’t or couldn’t win just to show they have the power over the awards not the big budget movies 99% of people watch and love.
@@michaelgibsontv The only they got it right was the Lord of the Rings movies.
It's political imo. There are things going on behind the scenes at Hollywood you could not comprehend
Ah please. It is only because Phillip Seymour Hoffman won that year for Capote. Phoenix just was against such a heavyweight.
Yeah there are older, more famous actors who never won, and maybe got an honorary Oscar, but it's a vote, and in acting I think just copying the character ain't enough....like a pink floyd cover band, any decent musician really can play the same musical notes, it's just copying. And a good question is...y did Reece win? Was she a better June than the other guy playing Cash, no.
I love how eccentric Joaquin Phoenix comes across. I like talented weird people
Joaquin Phoenix, in my opinion, should have 3 oscars by now: Best Supporting Actor for Gladiator", Best Actor for "Walk Thr Line" & Best Actor for "Joker".
Its hard not to like jaaquin phonix, its nice to see someone whos socially akward or different, be so successful and dedicated to his craft, in a industry full of fake people, and egotistical people where half the time its not about the art or even artistic its just about a image, so huge respect to jaquin
Joaquin is just soooo talented 😄

Talk show hosts are more cautious around Joaquin because they know he’s introverted
I grew up listening to Johnny Cash on the radio and the LPs and 45s we had. When I watched this movie I was absolutely blown away by how uncannily close Joaquin's version of Cash was to the Man in Black himself, especially the singing and facial expressions when he sang. Same for Reece's acting as June. Have watched the movie several times and each time is as good as the first. This guy is one hell of an actor and unlike many of them at his level, humble as could be and hates talking about himself. Conan respected that by introducing the clip, that's a class act for a host.

I have watched Walk the Line a dozen times and I’m looking forward to the next. Joaquin is thrilling. And, before I saw it the first time and heard Reese was playing June Carter Cash, I thought, really? She’s such a petite little thing; can she pull off a robust woman like June? She didn’t just pull it off; she made a believer out of me. And the guy who played Jerry Lee Lewis; wow! What a cast. What a director. One of my favorite movies of all time.
Joaquin deserved the Oscar for this part far more than Reese Witherspoon did for her Oscar! She was very good no doubt, but he put himself into Johnny Cash like no one else could do. It was amazing!!! I found it totally disgusting that he didn't get that deserved award.
The problem was he had to compete with Philip Seymour Hoffman's portrayal of Truman Capote. Both were absolutely incredible performances but only one could win.
