I remember being obsessed with this when it happened and more than ten years later it's still such a fun watch. Letterman was the perfect host for this. If Joaquin had gone on Leno, he would have been too timid to take any jabs at him, but this was right up Dave's alley. I think he was being facetious with the legal threats but the comments definitely got Phoenix off guard a bit.
He is one of the greatest actors of our time. He can do anything. John Cash was perfect, Comodor from Gladiator was amazing, his part on The Master was Oscar nominated along with many many other parts and now Joker which I think he will get an Oscar for.
I must be the only one who finds both interviews amazing to watch. Joaquin is my favorite actor alive today, and Letterman is my favorite talk show host ever.
Notice how he reacts to the praise of Letterman and the audience clapping? Unimpressed by his own status. He doesn't let things like praise get under his skin because he knows what's important and he knows how to nourish his soul. With the right things. He sees through things. This is what I call a man. A complete man. He's my favorite actor in Hollywood.

this guy is such a genius 😂, do u guys think he's doing the same stageplay in Kimmel? God imagine Kimmel not knowing anything and getting bullied by the media over nothing 😂😂😂
I think if Joaquin was upfront originally and talked to Dave to do the interview in character then Dave would have played along. People go on these shows to promote things, obviously. But when you put the host in that kind of spot by acting like that and not saying anything about it beforehand is rude. Then for Joaquin to basically say he thought Dave would have been smart enough to figure out what he was doing...That's when Dave really didn't let it go. First Joaquin makes a fool of his appearance then a year and a half later insults the host...yeah, I think I'd be kinda fuck you-ish if I were Dave.
@@SpideyScott72 I dont think that what the person was talking about at all but to respond to that point of view, If Joaquin would have just told Dave what was going to happen then he wouldn't get a genuine reaction from David and the interview would have gone differently and people would probably be able to make out that it was just a character so it would kinds ruin everything really and it was great promotion cause everyone wanted to see wtf was going on and plus millions of people watched that interview over and over again so it's a win win
@@Jorozco3708 I'm pretty sure Dave had been in the biz long enough to know how to play along. If you invite me to a party and I act like a dick, odds are as the party host you'll be slightly embarrassed and probably pissed. If I told you ahead of time I'm going to be a dick to see what people's reaction will be, you can either choose to say sure let's see where it goes, or no that's not what I want at my party. It shows you respect as the host rather than putting you in an awkward position. That said, I do think on the first point it's what the poster meant so we clearly have differing views which is perfectly fine.
He actually insulted his movie lol. He was being sarcastic about there being lines in the first place. I’ve heard this movie bombed at the box office. Joaquin laughed in a “touché - ya got me there” kind of way.

My question is how are people just now discovering Joaquin Phoenix? He’s been in other iconic films besides Joker. A couple of my favorites are Gladiator and Walk the Line.
Caitlin Joy That's because the majority of "people" are kids of this generation who have probably not seen his other films. But I agree with you. It's kinda annoying
You MUST see _The Master_ If you liked Joker, I can almost guarantee you'll love this movie ! Joaquin plays a somewhat Arthur Fleck-ish type guy who gets wooed into a Scientology-like cult headed by Philip Seymour Hoffman's character. Two of the best actors of this generation, directed by another great - Paul Thomas Anderson !!
He looks just about ready for a walk the line sequel. Walk the Line II: Return to Folsom Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Whiterspoon, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
David Lus I wish he would do a kind of walk the line maybe titled "hurt" where he portrays cash going though when cmt and country shunned him and he came back. Maybe to end it show him playing the signature cash song hurt
It's understandable while Letterman would be miffed though, however: he wasn't in on the documentary, and he was left out of the process. I don't think they needed to keep him in the dark to make those moments still feel real.
Chris Ducat: I think they should have revealed that the documentary was a spoof, too. But Letterman wasn't really as miffed as he was acting. I never saw any indication that he pursued a payout. It's just that Joaquin came on his show, unkempt, in sunglasses, and made Letterman uncomfortable by giving monosyllabic answers, he was putting one over on Letterman. So Letterman thinks: "Turnabout's fair play," he makes Joaquin squirm by accusing and demanding a million dollars. I think he was just giving him the business, i don't beleive there was ever a payout. That original show where Joaquin showed up in beard and sunglasses, beat out the tonight show in the ratings, so it was good for Letterman. And Letterman handled it like a master! I think Dave was a little hard on Joaquin here in this clip, but Joaquin handled it well when he was on the hot seat. I love them both, I love Letterman and Phoenix, so I found the whole thing very entertaining.
Why does Joaquin look like a different person every time I see him?

If Joaquin had gone on Leno, he would have been too timid to take any jabs at him, but this was right up Dave's alley. I think he was being facetious with the legal threats but the comments definitely got Phoenix off guard a bit.
If this guy doesn't kill it as the JOKER. I don't know who else would. Especially after Heath set such a high bar.
He will do his own thing and kill it lol
@@jessequest8575 yep. I bet he'll bring his own thing. I've seen his thing in his previous movies. He's got a thing!
Yeah, Heath is a tough act to follow, but if he does even half as well, then Joker will be good.
Two different jokers
J Molvin Heath joker is like going back to fantasy land. This joker in 2019 is the most realistic movie ever
He is one of the greatest actors of our time. He can do anything. John Cash was perfect, Comodor from Gladiator was amazing, his part on The Master was Oscar nominated along with many many other parts and now Joker which I think he will get an Oscar for.
i'm really glad he's back and he is being hired for great roles again.
***** sag me
Windownsmp sag mer sammy
I like to think this weirder roles he got after were exactly because of this stunt. The right people appreciated it.
I must be the only one who finds both interviews amazing to watch. Joaquin is my favorite actor alive today, and Letterman is my favorite talk show host ever.
So how excited are u for Joker being that you wrote this 2 years ago before people started bandwagon-hopping on him
Notice how he reacts to the praise of Letterman and the audience clapping? Unimpressed by his own status. He doesn't let things like praise get under his skin because he knows what's important and he knows how to nourish his soul. With the right things. He sees through things. This is what I call a man. A complete man. He's my favorite actor in Hollywood.
What minute this happens?
Phoenix: "can we discuss this in private?"
Letterman:"We'll go to one of your screenings"
Peak form
lmao incredible
One of a kind. I´m talking both of them
Vincent Knight Doesn't that make it two of a kind?
World Citizen they are different kinds
Vendrix ..which makes them two of two kinds?
subtletiger indeed. One is an asshole, the other is peculiar but talented.
Vendrix burn
He looked so good nine years ago. He is incredible talented and I’ve always loved his voice!
Joaquin Phoenix is the sexiest man on earth; clean cut and shaven or scrappy hair and beard. It just doesn't matter. He is psychotically hot!!
Joaquin Phoenix is great, love the back & forth between Dave & Joaquin.
These are two comic geniuses. Their collective IQ must be over 300. I saw Joker today. Joaquin was flat out brilliant.
He is so handsome!
3121nan shut the fuck up no he’s not just cuz of his fame
To a warthog.
frosty l calm the fuck down jealous ass you're mad because a man has talent and you don't lets see you're. Profile picture
O yes!!
Briann Johnson Just Imagine his Cock.
Oh My God
-Can we talk somewhere privately?
-yeah,well go to one of your screenings
buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurn
AceRahim I was scrolling during the interview and just as I was reading yours, that particular part was playing as I’m reading it. Does that make sense?? Just thought, what are the odds😁.
@@lauremehrkens5891 lol. Same with me
I remember watching the interview and thinking how strange it was I was a huge letterman fan I don’t know how many years have passed but I still love watching letterman interviews makes me feel I’m there in the past then I don’t feel the crazy stupid things that are going on in this present world it saddens me to realize I am living in it
0:19 one thing I can never understand is how JOAQUIN KEPT A STRAIGHT FACE WHEN LETTERMAN LAUGHED LIKE THAT
First movie I saw of him was in gladiator and he really caught my eye. Never forgot.
this guy is such a genius 😂, do u guys think he's doing the same stageplay in Kimmel? God imagine Kimmel not knowing anything and getting bullied by the media over nothing 😂😂😂
'I'm Still Here' is a brilliant work of art. Very talented dude.
If anyone is interested, the band starts playing "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" by Sly and the Family Stone at the end.
he seems like an interesting joker
That’s an understatement 😂
This comment has aged well
I-
Excellent
You time traveler
Saw that other interview and thought he was out of his mind. Had no idea that was a bit. This guy is incredible!
How else is binge watching but still haven't been able to see the movie yet
I actually started loving this guy after what he pulled. Seemed like it made everyone hate him. Morons.
Ironically Letterman has turned into that character that Phoenix portrayed on his previous visit
@Sam Sguanch it's just you
I think if Joaquin was upfront originally and talked to Dave to do the interview in character then Dave would have played along.
Scott Fearncombe the original comment was about letterman in 2019 and how he now has the crazy beard and shit like Joaquin did
Presence of mind - “I hate standing in line”. How he complimented the movie and gave reason for not seeing the movie.
He actually insulted his movie lol. He was being sarcastic about there being lines in the first place. I’ve heard this movie bombed at the box office. Joaquin laughed in a “touché - ya got me there” kind of way.
Rachel Trainor Joaquin made the joke first, saying Dave was the only one in America who hasn’t seen it.
"You'll get the money somehow." Yeah, from the highest grossing R rated movie ever made
I love that part when by the end of the bizarre interview Joaquin really feels he need to apologize, just shows that he is a good guy and he felt bad about it.
He’s THAT good an actor that he fooled everyone..... including a diagnosis from Dr. Drew. 😳
Mark S. Dr Drew is a complete narcissist
What interview did he fool everyone in? And when did he fool dr. Drew?
@@davicherosero5962 watch Joaquin's bearded hippie stoned look with David Letterman you'll see what we're talking about
IlIlIlIllIIl letterman interview.. when he trolled everyone that he is going to be a rapper! This happened way before joker joaqy, everyone thought he was crazy due to drugs... and everyone hated him that time...... end up it just for a movie hahahahahaha! watch it, joaqy epic trolling..
He is so handsome. Drop dead gorgeous.
So r you
Briann Johnson in your dreams. Get over yourself
People tell me I have a resemblance to him.
Ladies, no need to fight over me. There are seven days in a week.
Venezuelan !
I love his no bullshit attitude he seems to admit anything but not trying to offend .,, legend
My question is how are people just now discovering Joaquin Phoenix? He’s been in other iconic films besides Joker. A couple of my favorites are Gladiator and Walk the Line.
And her
And To Die For which came out in 1995. That film was my first introduction of him and I couldn't shake off how dark his character was.
@@Sharky165 Love that film! He's brilliant in it. Have you seen "You Were Never Really Here"?
Dave now has a massive beard, and acts like a recluse. Interesting.
At 70, ok. But not like 30s.
lol, he's just joking
He looks just about ready for a walk the line sequel. Walk the Line II: Return to Folsom
Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Whiterspoon, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
😂😂😂
David Lus I wish he would do a kind of walk the line maybe titled "hurt" where he portrays cash going though when cmt and country shunned him and he came back. Maybe to end it show him playing the signature cash song hurt
“We’ve made 75 cents on this movie”. 😂😂😂
Dave did do the best joke on that interview at the end "Well Jaoquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here today!" Cracked me up so hard.
6:14 That "risk" got him the Joker role... and it's glorious.
Someone does something MODERATELY ORIGINAL--and everyone grows crazy. What a conventional world this is.
Exactly what Joaquin was probably thinking.
+Richard Koenigsberg I only went moderately crazy. :O)
I love them both, I love Letterman and Phoenix, so I found the whole thing very entertaining.
convention were created by us , stop chatting shit on the world. without conventions life would be to crazy
This just proves how goldy of an actor he is.
God I wish Lettermen could interview him for Joker. They have such a good dynamic together.
Joaquin phoenix is really handsome
why the heck are Joaquin interviews so good but weird
sincerity
Them being 'wierd' is precisely what makes them good
@@May-wt1yc That's "weird" spelling.

Because it’s not Hollywood gloss and scripted perfection. It’s real
These interviews give me chills after watching Joker. It seems so surreal.
