Synthesizing the work of the great coaches that have come before him, Meisner, Addler, Hagan and more, Moss adapts his style to the needs of actor he is working on. A big believer in script analysis, we covered a lot in this interview. Moss is passionate and informative. If you're an actor or interested in the process, watch this show and read his book, "The Intent to Live".

One of the things I'm learning, which probably applies more when you're in drama school than outside, but still: Get more in control of your mind/thoughts. It's easy to be negative.. I wanted that part.. I wanted that director.. I wanted to work with that actor..I wanted to do that scene.. whatever it is, and this negativity can get you every time, because it will be different every time, very soon LET IT GO. Whatever you have to work with, you must very quickly get on with the work of making it brilliant. If it's a small part, make it brilliant.. if at first you don't care about the character, learn to care and make it brilliant.... One of the other things I am learning is WORK! If in doubt.. work.. If anything.. work! WORK WORK WORK. But work well..find your own process and work hard in it.. NOW.

53:44 "It's not you, it's the character!" I respect the fact that it's a clever way of encouraging a i.e. shy actor to behave the opposite to overcome his/her obstacles, but in reality, they really aren't the character. They are still themselves. They are just making a conscious decision to behave out of their comfort zone in order to overcome the irrational fear. It's a brave thing to do, but I don't think it's appropriate to hide the truth behind the idea of a "character."

hang on a sec. i mean, this is absolutely amazing, and may well have changed my life. this interview and larry's awesomeness and all. i really mean it. HOWEVER: i wanna ponder on a little thing right now. which is this. re:towards the very end of the interview: if the character is NOT YOU, and you're therefore playing the character only...then isn't that in contradiction with the amazing results of method acting, where actors try as much as possible to get as close as possible to the person that that character was? the REAL person that that character was/is. says larry, "you're not playing you, you're playing the character"... then how come a great actor such as day lewis always spends months trying to "become" that character? to immerse himself in those thoughts and mannerisms, to become those thoughts, as "realistically" as possible? reminds me of that anecdote about hoffman and olivier in marathon man about hoffman running around like a madman just before the take in order to "feel" and in fact "be" exhausted as "believably" as possible, to which olivier said "why don't you try acting? it's much easier". so. not sure about what to think about this. not sure what larry would reply to that.

Yes, focusing on the other person in a scene or improvisation can help but in my experience, it does NOT cure stage fright. That gradually disappears after a lot of work and developing confidence which ALSO incorporates elements such as the pursuit of underlying objectives and sending out actions, things emphasized at the Yale Drama School(though one needn't attend there just to learn these things). I agree though with the need to work on great plays so as to appreciate good quality writing.

The best won't be. Hell read up on Day Lewis, the best actor around and the most dedicated by a long way. Same goes for early Brando/De Niro/Pacino. But Day Lewis and his preperation is legendary. For one film he had to play a Czech doctor yet it was an entirely English speaking role. Just to get the accent right he learned Czech fluently in just a few months! He lived on his own in a hut I think, hunting for his food for Last of The Mohicans and there are so so many more examples!

Later in Meisner class, you are coming in to the room with an emotional preparation, meeting your partner, and starting an improvisation. @21xxx21 What do you make of starting out with a "vocal coach"? He recommends that in beginning of video. The same kind of vocal coaches that teach singing? I'm confused by that part.

This is very helpful for me. As an actress I have been trying to look this guy up. He seems like a very good coach and makes very good points. Thank you for this.

This is the best video for acting training on the internet. I’ve watched this countless amount of time for the past 2 years and still learn and it reminds me of things I forget. THANK YOU SO MUCH. For posting this when you did. So helpful and I’m so grateful.

Andy Antonio Do a You Tube search for Michael Caine Acting Class. That will knock you on your ass. It goes for about an hour. Absolutely brilliant.
You'll want to thank me after watching it. It's that good!

"...audiences want to see experience, not an intelluctual idea of emotion..." VERY SOLID! Larry Moss seems refreshingly direct and down to earth. He seems to have an excellent background and a lot of common sense.

@21xxx21 Thanks 21. Okay, so if I got that right you go to a vocal coach first then learn to act.
