- Having worked with Oscar winning actors Hillary Swank, and Helen Hunt among many others, including Leonardo Dicaprio Michael Clarke Duncun, Hank Azaria and Jim Carey, Larry Moss is consider to be an acting coach that is a legend in his own time. Synthesizing the work of the great coaches that have come before him, Meisner, Addler, Hagan and more, Moss adapts his style to the needs of actor he is working on. A big believer in script analysis, we covered a lot in this interview. Moss is passionate and informative. If you're an actor or interested in the process, watch this show and read his book, "The Intent to Live".
This is one of my favorite videos on acting out there. "If you don't have something to say, you shouldn't be an actor"...
One of the things I'm learning, which probably applies more when you're in drama school than outside, but still: Get more in control of your mind/thoughts. It's easy to be negative.. I wanted that part.. I wanted that director.. I wanted to work with that actor..I wanted to do that scene.. whatever it is, and this negativity can get you every time, because it will be different every time, very soon LET IT GO. Whatever you have to work with, you must very quickly get on with the work of making it brilliant. If it's a small part, make it brilliant.. if at first you don't care about the character, learn to care and make it brilliant.... One of the other things I am learning is WORK! If in doubt.. work.. If anything.. work! WORK WORK WORK. But work well..find your own process and work hard in it.. NOW.
Well said 👌
+BrightonTom23 i even heard in disney channel the only person stopping u in getting a acting career is u, well said
BrightonTom23 Now this is a beuatiful share. Blessings for creating the imagery. This is a wealth of knowledge for novice and experienced actors/actresses.
I love the find your voice own process.
BrightonTom, how did it work out?
OMG!!!!!!!!!...u wanna take notes and constantly rewind.....for any actor who has problems with showing terror...crying..anger etc etc..well...u gotta watch this..Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...Arch
This lecture was enlightening on many (too many) levels. Wish I'd seen it 12 yrs ago, but maybe I was meant to see it now.
I'd rather make little-to-no money doing something I love (acting), than make a little bit more money doing something I don't
I heard this from one wise man: the reason we get paid for jobs is because we wouldn't do them otherwise. ie we get paid for doing something we don't like.
Not everybody gets to live their dream.
i wouldnt do something i didnt love for barely anymore than nothing. you have to do something you hate sometimes thats life, you make little to none forever that means your poor. and if you're poor acting that means you aren't a good actor.
(3) he loves the process of creating another human being. ” By phone from his New York studio, Moss melts in praise: “Leo is open emotionally, he is physically free, very brave, and, working with him is vey funny, he has a very black sense of humor.” With no doubt, “DiCaprio is one of the most important actors of his generation.” Scorsese is always saying it, Steven Spielberg says it too.'
woooooooow! so educative, inspiring and encouraging!!!!!!!! learn't a lot. thank you.
acting is a selfless act its not about the actor thats what just about all acting coaches don't implement .Its selfless work truly great actors are selfless
This is awesome! so practical and inspiring
53:44 "It's not you, it's the character!" I respect the fact that it's a clever way of encouraging a i.e. shy actor to behave the opposite to overcome his/her obstacles, but in reality, they really aren't the character. They are still themselves. They are just making a conscious decision to behave out of their comfort zone in order to overcome the irrational fear. It's a brave thing to do, but I don't think it's appropriate to hide the truth behind the idea of a "character."
90% character 10% you
@@shanejupp8699 It will always be 100% you because the fictitious idea of the character can only be brought to life by the flesh and bones of actor. You as the actor will still work within the parameters of what the script describes what the character does. But it is how you do it and how you feel about it and to do what you feel is neccessary; which is all reflected by your own self.
@@shanejupp8699 “Your acting will not be good until it is only yours. That's true of music, acting, anything creative. You work until finally nobody is acting like you.” -Sanford Meisner
@@PulpFictionized it’s really not at all.try some emptying exercises and first thought embryo thoughts from a state of sub conscious
@@shanejupp8699 sounds like pseudoscience acting Haha but maybe I will try it and see what happens

Can you recommend a great vocal coach?

any advice how to break into Acting I'm well built tall and handsome
Hey someone can help me...I didn't really get the name of the vocal coach that Larry mentioned at the begin of the video!!
Thanks a lot from Italy :)
Patsy Rodenburg....She has a clip on youtube as well. :)
Thanks a lot!! :)
Wrote a helpful book on acting, however, his attacks on David Mamet's "take" on acting is controversial(Mamet thinks teaching acting has been over complicated and should just be reduced to knowing the character's objective and the rest will follow effortlessly).
Larry just likes to listen to himself talk and Name drop
Listen TO THE VIDEO AGAIN
Thank you for doing this interview. I learned so much just from listening one hour so I went right to Amazon and ordered the book. I was convicted about some things that I have not been doing as an actor and gained a better understanding of other things that I can grow and improve upon. I can't wait to take what I love to another level.

I have just done exactly the same, Sincerely Kimmy :) Gx
Hello now that its been i decade im curious how ur acting is going?
Not sure how I stumbled on this interview, I'm not even an actor. Amazing video with many life lessons!!
Larry is genuine and a gift to this industry as with Uta Hagen very rare.
Studied with this man for years in NY and LA. The most influential teacher I ever had. Good to see him here talking about what he knows and loves so well...
I feel blessed to have spent many months working with this man, life changing.
Yes, it is.
I'm curious what you worked on with him? he coached you? He seems EXTREMELY knowledgable.
Months!!!? Oh how blessed😱
I am Awudu Adamu From Ghana. I want to be a grate ACTOR and am so blessed with this video because it has updated me in ways I can't explain thank you very much hoping to meet and work with you soon
And so you shall 🤗
"They showed me what it is to be human. In the theaters and in the movies. Because I didn't learn that at home." This. Exactly this, is the story of my youth. I don't think I've ever connected so deeply to anything else ever spoken. Thank you.
Wow, what a dude! Very practical advice. Love the human element and how he stresses passion, placing your awareness on the actor across from you, and the element of want always being at the forefront of acting.
Brilliant. As a musician I can totally relate to what he is saying. Alexander technique is very practical for freeing up breathing and awareness of the other.
The Green Mile was on loop in my home for so long they took it away from me. I am in awe of the amazing work. Larry Moss brings out the talent in every performer he works with. Each and everyone of them are truly blessed for his direction. Thank you for this interview. Great questions.
Love that he says it is about honoring the writer. I can't tell you how many actors I have worked with on TV and in features who cannot say a line the way it is written. I started as an actor and also worked for writers. Learning respect for writers is everything. Thank you Larry Moss
@nanci would you be willing to share some advice to your younger self and what you would do differently?
hang on a sec. i mean, this is absolutely amazing, and may well have changed my life. this interview and larry's awesomeness and all. i really mean it. HOWEVER: i wanna ponder on a little thing right now. which is this. re:towards the very end of the interview: if the character is NOT YOU, and you're therefore playing the character only...then isn't that in contradiction with the amazing results of method acting, where actors try as much as possible to get as close as possible to the person that that character was? the REAL person that that character was/is. says larry, "you're not playing you, you're playing the character"... then how come a great actor such as day lewis always spends months trying to "become" that character? to immerse himself in those thoughts and mannerisms, to become those thoughts, as "realistically" as possible? reminds me of that anecdote about hoffman and olivier in marathon man about hoffman running around like a madman just before the take in order to "feel" and in fact "be" exhausted as "believably" as possible, to which olivier said "why don't you try acting? it's much easier". so. not sure about what to think about this. not sure what larry would reply to that.
If you don't get anything good in life..you won't have a life
Yes, focusing on the other person in a scene or improvisation can help but in my experience, it does NOT cure stage fright. That gradually disappears after a lot of work and developing confidence which ALSO incorporates elements such as the pursuit of underlying objectives and sending out actions, things emphasized at the Yale Drama School(though one needn't attend there just to learn these things). I agree though with the need to work on great plays so as to appreciate good quality writing.
This is such a revelation. I've only been acting for around 6 months but everything he just said makes so much sense. Have to buy his book!
Hi Grace! Are you still acting? I only ask out of pure interest. I’ve been acting for about 3 years, with little to no progress. Every now and then I come back to Mr Moss for inspiration and it fires me up again.
...Dave Wagner,
(Honoring the writer)
(Having something to say as an actor)
(Inhabiting the character)
Which one of these attributes "is it" you ask?
All the above my friend, all the above and then some.
Acting is a process, not a solitary trick.---Kpayton911
The best won't be. Hell read up on Day Lewis, the best actor around and the most dedicated by a long way. Same goes for early Brando/De Niro/Pacino. But Day Lewis and his preperation is legendary. For one film he had to play a Czech doctor yet it was an entirely English speaking role. Just to get the accent right he learned Czech fluently in just a few months! He lived on his own in a hut I think, hunting for his food for Last of The Mohicans and there are so so many more examples!
I wish to God someone would give tips on how to act when you are a chronic hicupper.
Have you tried taking magnesium malate? It may be that you have a deficiency causing spasms in your muscles. Deep breathing sometimes helps too. Good luck.
Is your real name J Hutch or did you just use Josh Hutcherson’s name
@@jagerbaby8628 Thanks for the question!
classes. take classes and make friends in the field. If you're committed, trust worthy, and kind you can go far.
Spot on, Larry. Isn't interesting that the best film acting coaches like Larry Moss, RJ. Adams and Howard Fine all talk exactly the same language? Good job Larry!
Starting on my acting journey, I started singing over a year ago and have learned so much. First thing my Tricia Skitt my teacher taught me was the breathing technique, it gives you so much more power and control on the volume and intensity of your voice and increasing the capacity. Very important tool
Been an actor for 30 years, and this man has inspired me.
He makes me value my craft.
Hello, are you still going it, like now it's 40
Wow thank you so much for posting this!
This sounds like him narrating a lot of his book haha, it's like the same exact thing. I do suggest anyone who want's to get serious about acting read his book. Another book I would suggest is The Power of the Actor by Ivana Chubbuck!
Thoroughly Amazed.
(2) he creates from the scratch, he doesn’t settle down into the past of his character, he goes further and invents his way of walk, how to talk, how to breath …
THE MAN IS BRILLIANT!!!
(1) “Leo is a healthy actor,” agrees the actors trainer Larry Moss, DiCaprio is a happy person, he does not suffer unnecessarily, but he is not afraid to dive into his own darkness. The amazing thing about Leonardo, is that, in despite of his look and his star status, he is a character actor: he doesn’t perform offering a version of his own personality,
I like this guy. A lot.
I love when he says the best way is the most human ay @ min 39
..did you by any chance find the brando scene online, youtube or what not, "oh my, oh my" , the scene he speaks about before saying what you just quoted? i haven't . would love to find it. or the full length movie too for that matter. can't find it.
Linda Hunt- one in a million. I studied with the same people you did. I'm in my sixties.First Broadway show, understudy-never went on. Moved to LA. "Ah, Mr. Peterson".Then "Treated and released" I made a living as an actor and these were the lines I had to say. Ibsen, Tennessee Williams, Albee. These were the writers I did in non paying theaters. More of US then Them.
What was made Meisner? Only one exercise?! Who can answer my question? He have Russian blood, but he said nothing about Stanislavsky?! Why?
No, Meisner is so much more than one exercise. The repetition is just the very first thing you'll do when you study Meisner. It's a technique to learn focusing 100% on your partner, and get out of your head. Later in Meisner class, you are coming in to the room with an emotional preparation, meeting your partner, and starting an improvisation. I studied Meisner for nearly two years and there is so much I've learned from there! If you want more description of Meisner, feel free to ask :)
swedishpsycho1 Thank you! You pushed me to learn more about his method) But I'm not sure that he opened something new than Stanislavsky did.
Actor & Acting Coach Andrey Vasilyev I'm glad I made you curious :) Well, it is all based on Stanislavsky's work. What Meisner really did was coming up with exercises to help you connecting and getting out of your head. One thing, particully, that I learned in Meisner class was how moment-to-moment feels like. I got a better understanding
I keep watching this video every 4 months! Great tips, and they fits my life as differently things start to develop. Thank you for the post!
Grand takeaway: therapy and art are awesome.
12 years later the words about Cabaret sound especially revealing. Europe doesn't want to see the reality again, drapping itself into the Ukranian flag. And Russian and Ukranian bodies are piling up. And yes, America has got a new president... It's hard enough to learn acting but not as hard as to live life without it. Great coach. Regards from Moscow)
Larry Moss is outstanding. Essential, primal, empirical and useful right now insights and guidance. Hey, thanks a hell of a lot, Larry. The best advice I've got since I was fortunate enough to take classes with the great David Mann.
Colonel Neville what advice did he give you?
Just what I needed, thank you!
Intressting ! in 2 weeks im going on an interview to maybe be in an acting school. Were going to do some exercises on stage.. Im shy and im nervous. Im gonna start to say hello to people when i walk by etc etc. I hope it helps. :P i gotta stop being so shy !!
I was working with Lillian and Dorothy Gish on a closed set of the film On The Shores Of GuicheeGoomee back in the day. It was my first job as an actor and my part was just a one liner, mm-kay? After only one take of my line, to my surprise, Lillian and Dorothy Gish both approached me and graciously told me how talented I was. "You're so quick to state the obvious", I said to them both. Needless to say, I had them both written up on a sexual harassment charge. The nerve of them.
Larry Moss, you are a genius. Amazing teacher. Thank you so much for the advice!
I put about hour to 3 hours doing craft/scenes when I do my job I am constant working and I try memorize, listen to all stuff to learn etc
Great and inspiring interview. Larry Moss recommends being a student of writers, directors, and actors. I love the following quotes. "Writers, directors, and actors saved my life - they showed me what it was to be human." He asked this question with detail, "Did I get anything from this interview with Larry Moss… I want. I've got to get what I want. There's something in my way. How do I try to get it? What am I trying to make the other character do or feel?"
3:22 • “It was the beginning of me not being so aware of myself that I couldn’t function.”
THIS! This is what I needed to hear, this is where I need to start - this is it! Oh my gosh, finally this is it! This is what I need to practice!
i 'm Greek and i leave in Greece, i would propably never had the chance to have lessons with that great, as i understand , actor/teacher... thanks so much for this video!
When he mentioned Heath Ledger, my heart skipped a beat and my stomach turned. 😭😭😭😭😭
Infinitely valuable
I loved it when Larry said 'Help me' when the interviewer asked him about video blogging. That was such a human moment.
i have gained a lot about understanding the character you are playing. thanks Moss
Was he saying he was medicated for the interview??
i finished drama at GCSE level i was so nervous! i was worrying about what everyone was going to think, but in the end everyone applauded our group and said it was possibly the best one! i also feel like acting can and will be a career that i really want to do.
Never let fear get in the way of your dreams
Re-watching this and seeing I was the last comment 8 years ago. In the meantime I have taken class with Larry Moss and I am dying to study with him again!
Its not about you! Its about the story hahaha :D Thx for the tips sir.

This is fantastic, brilliant and exactly what I needed and need to hear. Awesome.
Just brilliant!
Q: Any advice for people making episodes on the web?
A:Pay attention to how you order your coffee....
@21xxx21 What do you make of starting out with a "vocal coach"? He recommends that in beginning of video. The same kind of vocal coaches that teach singing? I'm confused by that part.
This is very helpful for me. As an actress I have been trying to look this guy up. He seems like a very good coach and makes very good points. Thank you for this.
This is the best video for acting training on the internet. I’ve watched this countless amount of time for the past 2 years and still learn and it reminds me of things I forget. THANK YOU SO MUCH. For posting this when you did. So helpful and I’m so grateful.
