HOW TO: Make drink coasters out of tiles

- This is a super cute and easy idea for a homemade unique gift for Christmas, weddings, housewarming, etc.
Things you will need:
4- 4X4 ceramic tiles
1 scrapbook paper or 4 pictures
Mod Podge
Glue
Scissors
Ribbon
1" foam brush
Cork or felt

I have a friend that makes these and she made my husband and I a set of 5 with our engagement photos on them and give them to us as a wedding gift. they are absolutely gorgeous.. of course I don't use them to sit drinks on. they are sitting on a corner shelf in our bedroom for looks only!!

Is the mod podge the only thing needed for a heat and waterproof finish?

I put several coates of mod podge on coaster and they getting stuck after sitting out days well since fathers day . Do I need a sealer clear coat?
I've noticed with mod podge, they will get stuck to each other, unless you put something on the bottom of them, like cork or felt. I prefer to use cork. Mod podge is also a sealer too - but it needs EIGHT weeks to fully cure, so I usually end up using triple thick. It creates a nice super shiny hardened surface. But if you have eight weeks to keep all those mod podge'd coasters to set out, then go for that. ;)
Eight weeks? Wow! I’ve had the sticking together problem as well. I thought two days would be good. No wonder I had problems.
@@lynneclark7902 No it does not take 8 weeks to cure. It will fully cure in approximately 28-30 days. To verify this all you have to do is google it.
@@michelerichter4 Mod Podge takes 28-30 days to fully cure. Please don't spread false info that is easily fact-checked with a simple google search.
Will this also work with images you print from your computer...ie-cartoon characters...or will the ink smear? does it help to put more than one coat of Mod Podge?
I would think you could use anything. Mod Podge doesn't smear the ink. Maybe just give it a few light coats.

It won't smear if you use prints from a LASER printer. Ink Jet smears bad.
I'm having some issues with my scrap paper bubbling. Anyone else have this issue?

I'm not sure as I've never done it. You can always try it 😃
iamsunflower2011 I use vinyl without the Mid Podge and they came out fine. I sealed it with Minwax Polycrylic... 3-4 thin coats.

No spray sealer at the end?
You put another coat of the mod podge on top as I showed you. If you want to spray something that's totally up to you but the mod podge acts as a sealant.
I have made these and even with the sealer, a cup leaves marks on the coaster. Hot mugs are out of the question. How do we make these so the mugs/glass won't leave a mark? I let them sit for a whole week after putting the sealer on them, before I tested them.

in your video as you start to assemble you say glue and then use modpdge? is that just a mistake in speaking?

I'm not trying to be smart, I've been thinking about making some, but what is the sense of a coaster that doesn't absorb?
I know what you mean but I think it’s more of a pretty thing. We use ours all the time and just put a napkin over it
@@Tambowz911 How can you not know what she means? Her question is simple and direct. Coasters should absorb so if the glass sitting on it "sweats" it absorbs into the coaster material instead of running off the edge onto your table negating the whole purpose of a coaster.

Can you put HOT items on these ? Like a hot casserole bowl ?
I never have so if you do I would check it after 30 sec or so to see how it is doing. lol
Tambowz911 You can if you first spray them with waterproof sealant after the modpodge has dried over night. The brand recommended is Rust-Oleum Painters Touch Ultra Cover 2X. Matte Clear.
Learned the hard way that you cannot put hot things on these. People who make them say you can. Wrong. I've seen so many complaints about these being useless for hot things and it's true!
You can seal these with epoxy resin for hot items...2 part resin. I use it on the trivets and the coasters because sometimes the coaster is more convenient at the time.
