    I am a Black female that moved to Costa Rica earlier this year along with my husband, and I would say your journey is just beginning. Most expats don't move to Costa Rica to go to San Jose, Some people may go to Escazu, which is right above San Jose & a little like Beverly Hills upscale area. The only reason you go to San Jose is to go to the airport in Alajuela. Once you get outside of that area it is green beyond green because of the rainy season. The newer homes that are being built around the country are beautiful & very tropical. You also want to go to Liberia (Guanacaste) side which is a little less rainy. You also want to go to the Carribbean side where the Afro Carribbean population is & becoming very trendy amongst tourists & a lot more Black people are moving to the area where they speak English. Most of the new builds in Costa Rica have synthetic wood flooring, same as in the US. Where I live further south you do not see white tile. I think that's more of a condo thing & once you leave that area, you will see very little condos, except in Jaco (pronounced Haco). I agree Mexico has the old colonial archetecture & Costa Rica is all about nature. I absolutely love it even with the rain. There is a big organic, vegeterian, raw food population going south. A lot of fresh fish, lots of fruits & the farmers market in San Isidro is to die for or live for. My point is just know that expats don't go to San Jose unless they are going to the airport or conducting business or a particular reason; never to live. Costa Rica is very diverse so you really have to travel around before forming opinions.

    I’m dying at the people who were asking about Starbucks when Costa Rican coffee is top tier!! 😂😂😂

    • @perryelyod4870
      @perryelyod4870 Год назад +3

      Actually, Starbucks was a great benefit to Costa Rica. Before Starbucks arrived, Tico's drank the worst coffee (and cheap) from the plantations, the good stuff got exported. They also added a lot of sugar, and never really appreciated what good coffee should taste like. At best, you could get a mediocre coffee with your meal. With Starbucks, they got more adventurous with their coffee, and having coffee as a social outing, and trying different things. So, like in so many other places, other coffee houses opened, and restaurants invested in a barista coffee machine, using fresh quality beans benefiting plantations such as Cafe Britt. So now, you do see the good beans in the grocery stores, along with the working mans inferior coffee. And I also see Starbucks as a good corporate addition to the country with the opening of Hacienda Alsacia.

    • @davidwatson7919

      That's because you have many Costa Rica and realize that coffee cost $3 a cup. If you want the good coffee it's not going to be cheap because you're in Costa Rica. They export that in the locals don't drink that they drink the regular coffee over the counter it's in a yellow and black bag I forget the name. But the expensive Costa Rican coffee you're not going to just want one cup and if you want to spend $9 sitting down having three cups of coffee by all me and go for it

    Hey Stephanie, I’m in San Rafael de Escazu. (Marina helped me move here and yes she has moved to Mexico.) Look for real vanilla bean or extract at The Green Center (organic grocery store) sometimes at Pricesmart (Costco) when it’s in stock. You will find vanilla essence at most of the local shops, you can also use the grocery tab in Uber if you want it delivered. There is a lavandería to have clothes washed or altered around the corner from me as well. Happy to answer any other questions you may have. Bienvenida a Costa Rica 🇨🇷😊

    I don’t think you should live there, but you must visit, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca,the region of “ people of color” . Some much history.

    Just to add a little info to this conversation is most of the Black people that are from Costa Rica are on the Carribbean side. You are not going to see a lot of Blacks in San Jose, maybe a few here & there. Black people primarily who move to Costa Rica have no desire to move to San Jose. And in the dry season, it can get into the low 90's or the 80's even in the rainy season on very sunny days midday. High humidity but a comfortable humidity. Mosquitoes in the evening, always have your non-toxic repellent to put on when the sun starts to go down. Please take San Jose off the table unless you like a crowded town with bad traffic & big ditches. That is not where you want to live. If you move to Costa Rica because your employer has an office there & you need to be close to the airport, check out Escazu. And yes I am well traveled around the world because I was a flight attendant for a long time & I am well traveled. I have brought Vanilla extract at the regular store. Certain things we like are very expensive like Nutritional yeast, tahini, miso, things I eat as a vegetarian. Vanilla beans grow in CR so it is plentiful. Hair care products you need to make your own. You have to have some flexibility. I hate to keep adding to this conversation but once you get outside of the more populated areas you will see very few McDonalds, Starbucks, Subways, etc. But is that what you're moving to CR for? They have great coffee here, support the local coffee shops, great coffee. Leave the processed junk food in America. One more suggestion is do your due diligence, lots of different climate zones here. If you don't want much rain & love more sun, research those areas before you move to a much rainier area & you're unhappy. I'm not putting Ssn Jose down, just trying to put things into perspective for someone moving from a a place like the US or Europe & moving to a third world country.

    Hi Stephanie I just joined THS and am so excited. I got a one night sit right away with no references. But I have questions about the website that couldnt really be answered to my satisfaction when I called the help number. I wanted to pick your brain about it. I think proving your integrity is so important to get the Trust going at THS. So why do they only check out me and not my husband? They want to check the person that is the main name on the profile and the "partner" is just a tag along that doesnt have to be checked out. Do the homeowners realize this? My husband and i have been married like forever, but to THS my partner could be my boyfriend of the month who may or may not be a criminal, and even I wouldnt know it, you know? When i asked them about this they just said that checking me out was sufficient enough for THS. Personally , I could not let a couple stay in my home knowing this. Also the company that does the check - EvidentID. They could not tell me how much of a background check they actually do. I do know this. My husband recently went to get a gun carry permit. We dont carry our gun be he just wanted the right to in an emergency. We had to pay 80 dollars just for the background check which entails getting all 10 fingerprints from you and takes 2 weeks to run through. It is thorough, checking you out on a national, state and county level. Now i know this EvidentID could not be doing any where near as thorough of a check as that because they dont have our fingerprints! Also THS told us that the houseowners are only checked for ID, and they are NOT checked out at the same level as the sitters. Well that could be a concern for me as a sitter if they leave home early morning and ask the sitter to just come stay with them the night before . They could be - well you know. Its just a concern. Anyway, other than that I am ecstatic about the possibilities of this opportunity. Let me know your thoughts, and I would soo appreciate it. Also - they said there was no way i could get a more thorough background check on us through them and I would need to do that on my own and share that privately with potential homeowners. Have you ever heard of anyone do that? I think it would be a trust and integrity booster for us and help with our competition on sits since we are newbies. -Thanks from said newbies!
