- This is the full length trip report with natural sounds and on-trail commentary from a 3-day solo backpacking adventure that I took to the Roan Highlands section of the Appalachian Trail crossing North Carolina and Tennessee. I covered ~19 miles in late August 2020 across the Pisgah and Cherokee National Forests in this beautiful stretch of the Unaka Mountains. Hopefully this summer blast from the past helps do away with some of the winter blues!

Don't blink during my camp setup on Day 1 or you'll miss a furry visitor!
Thanks Layne. Nice report. Enjoyed that same stretch just a little while after you did it this time. I caught a shuttle, so I went from Carvers to 19E over two days. Slung my hammock just up the hill from where you did at overmountain. Thanks for freshening up the memory...
Good stuff Jim! That's a great little hammock grove area behind the barn. Good memories to have
One of my favorite places I go twice a year
One of my favorite places as well mist. Every hike it is different (weather, season, people, etc)
Good coverage. A grand area for sure, even with somewhat undesirable weather at times. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Jerry, Roan sure is a grand area. Good to hear from you
Nice Video...I stayed at Overmountain maybe 4 times this year in the same trees you hang in above the barn...Love that section of the AT...At least 50 people there one night in july...It was crazy...8 people in hammocks...It seems to always have a way of bringing in a storm...When im not in Linville Gorge Wilderness on a weekend im on the AT somewhere and go to Roan Highlands often... Great work with your videos 🙌🙌
Yes sir, Roan is a special place. Sounds like you're getting some great time outdoors with 4 visits this year! That area around Overmountain can get super packed, I've never seen 8 hammocks hanging there but that meadow can be chock full of tents
Nice vid as always, Layne. The Roans are one of my favorite areas, too. Thanks for sharing your hike with us.
Thanks for watching 33! Roan captures the heart of everyone who visits
The Overmountain Shelter also has the best outhouse view while sitting down!
“Outhouse” is a generous description but you’re spot on about the view!
It's easy to run out of superlatives when you hike the places you hike. Great video, Layne! Thank you!
There are a lot of beautiful places and I am glad to get to share some of them. Thanks Pop Pop!
Man you hold onto this footage a long time before posting! It’s fascinating what 4500 feet looks like in that climate zone. Up in New Hampshire that’s alpine zone territory. but down there it’s just beautiful pasture. Congrats on hitting 500 subs!
Only so many hours in the day, I have a ton of unreleased footage to be worked on. Roan is a unique environment even for around here. I don't pay too much heed to the numbers but I am very appreciate of everyone who shows support!
Thanks for sharing, planning to take this nest year.
Good luck next year!
Gonna have to go hike that area someday… seems like everyone likes that area. Nice video ! 👍
It is well worth checking out - one of the most beautiful places around!
Wow, perfect weather! Also i don't think I've seen that few people out there in years - looks like you got really lucky. Roan to me is one of the most nostalgic areas that I think back too often. I'm going to miss the over mountain shelter tho.
2 out of 3 days nice weather, can’t ask for more than that on the balds. I know that Roan is special to you as the location of your first backpacking trip
What are the water sources like along the stretch you hiked?
Many of the sources can be seasonal but both the Overmountain area and Stan Murray shelter have reliable water.
@@LayneComfortThere is also a water source on Grassy Ridge not many know about...I had a local tell me about it...
I've heard about that one too but have never scoped it out myself
