Makes it hard to understand over all character arc, but it truly forces complete focus, concentration, and listening in the present scene because you won't know where the story is going from that moment in time. The slightest detail could be important. Makes you assume they shot this with a linear story focus, starting from the beginning to the end with no jumping around. Very difficult! Very interesting set up and hurdles to try and navigate for shooting a movie like this. Preparation had to be through the roof before they ever started. I am assuming again, storyboards/previsual, extensive location scouting, and availability for a shooting schedule. And all of it, you leave the lead in the dark over the big picture, and you only feed them a piece at a time while you're filming ... if there is a story here worthy of this work, it'll be a big hit.

Well, he could have been given a giant book of what his life was like up until the point the movie started, including with his family. So that would be set and in place. For example in the preview the cop is asking questions about his work and the movies doesn't tell us (in the preview), but McAvoy's character would know, so he should know.

They have to be careful with this gimmick though as there are many things the character knows that the audience does not. For example, he would know what his job was/is and exactly what he did in Lybia, Iraq etc. so, for example, if there are some reveals connecting present and past, the audience may be surprised but McAvoy should not be.
I was thinking the same thing. Given a detailed character background for the person he's playing and daily scenes are set up, then it's on him to proceed. I think this type of acting would be the most difficult yet offer the easiest path to true emotion and reaction. Really interested to see how this turns out.

He was given a premise and cues just not a script so he could only mentally and emotionally prepare himself so far. It truly is getting closer than anyone before and seeing a professional actor experience the real thing in real time. It's not 100% but it's pretty darn close. I like this concept and I hope it catches on and we see other great actors try this as well

But the statement that says "What follow is a groundbreaking filmmaking achievement" ? Lol no. In the original French movie, Guillaume Canet didn't have a script either. For anyone asking who is it possible without a script, there are some guidelines given by the director, but for example when Mélanie Laurent was speaking, Guillaume answered naturally without knowing what he should have said if given a script. It's the same concept here. It's cool to make a remake of it with James McAvoy, but advertise it as a groundbreaking filmmaking achievement. It's been done before.

What confuses me are the scenes were McAvoy's character loses it & gets angry. They must have done extensive preparation to convey unexpected/unscripted violence without actually hurting the other actor (unless he's playing against stunt men he's actually beating up???)
@@twittertwice Not at all. There is no chance in hell that they 'ad libbed' physical violence/contact against another actor. The mere hint of that would lock this film up in litigation that none of us would ever see it. With enough preparation and the right actor (which they clearly have) doing something like this would certainly be difficult but it wouldn't be insurmountable. Now to make it really good, again you have to have the right people in front of and behind the camera to pull it off. The producers and director clearly knew how to orchestrate this. It's interesting that they don't mention if anyone ELSE was in the dark the whole time. If it was only McAvoy then the navigation is much 'easier' as it were because everyone else is 'in" on it and where they fit into it (see Fincher's The Game). Violent scenes could have developed as McAvoy indicated his intentions. "No, no. I think I would try to physically get it out of him." Or maybe the directors want a character to attack him. "Okay James, he's going to come at you now." So they pause filming. Work out choregraph of the encounter and then recommence shooting. McAvoy is physically capable so he'd probably pick up on things pretty quickly (unless it's some elaborate fight stunt from an Xmen movie but clearly that's not what we're going to see here.) No idea how they really planned it but there is no doubt that the fights were choregraphed.

I grew up in the rural (US) South, but after just a few decades of living elsewhere my accent is mostly gone unless I intentionally put it on. Well, not gone, just the accent of where else I've lived. Ramirez was in Scotland for who knows how long (you couldn't exactly hop on a plane), so it's not surprising he sounded Scottish.

My first time seeing James McAvoy in a movie was in Wanted and I remember thinking "how the hell does this unknown actor get to star in this action packed movie with Angelina Jolie?" After watching many of his movies throughout the years, I understand now lol

Yeah just a gimmick. A good actor, like he is no doubt, is basically a sociopath who can change emotions in the fly. Reading the script that day or a month before doesn’t really matter. Plus this has been done many times where directors don’t give the actors the script until shooting so it doesn’t leak.

You're right. They can't predict what he will do or say. But it's possible that they're given a script, and may also be improvising or adjusting their lines accordingly. They're probably also given notes by the director as well, to help them along as they work with McAvoy.
I kinda feel like they shouldn't have given us the details of the making of the film in the actual trailer and just let it stand on its own. That's the kind of thing I like to find out after I've already watched the movie.

They didn't say there wasn't a script; there just wasn't a script for James. 😂 He had to react and improvise to what the other actors were saying/doing. I'm sure he also received direction as to what the expected outcome of each scene was before they started shooting. Pretty interesting.

Christopher Guest has been making scriptless movies since the 90s. There's probably more examples before that. This is just Hollywood PR. Like how Fargo is a "true story", except it totally isn't and that's just something they said.
They have yet to come up with an award that would be worthy of this man, McAvoy has the ability to draw you in and experience the role he is playing.
I've been saying that James McAvoy is a phenomenal actor for YEARS. Nobody has agreed with me, until now.

On the conceit that the actor finds out information the same time as the audience, I’m reminded of the anecdote where Dustin Hoffman stayed up for 72 hours to help him get into the mindset of an insomniac, and Laurence Olivier quipped “My dear boy, why don't you try ACTING? It's so much easier"

Took a while before they turned Heavy Rain into an actual movie.
What confuses me are the scenes were McAvoy's character loses it & gets angry. They must have done extensive preparation to convey unexpected/unscripted violence without actually hurting the other actor (unless he's playing against stunt men he's actually beating up???)
I assume they did choreograph any sort of violence, they kind of have to. Maybe they just went it over with James the day of or something?

@@twittertwice Not at all. There is no chance in hell that they 'ad libbed' physical violence/contact against another actor. The mere hint of that would lock this film up in litigation that none of us would ever see it.
With enough preparation and the right actor (which they clearly have) doing something like this would certainly be difficult but it wouldn't be insurmountable. Now to make it really good, again you have to have the right people in front of and behind the camera to pull it off.
The producers and director clearly knew how to orchestrate this. It's interesting that they don't mention if anyone ELSE was in the dark the whole time. If it was only McAvoy then the navigation is much 'easier' as it were because everyone else is 'in" on it and where they fit into it (see Fincher's The Game). Violent scenes could have developed as McAvoy indicated his intentions. "No, no. I think I would try to physically get it out of him." Or maybe the directors want a character to attack him. "Okay James, he's going to come at you now." So they pause filming. Work out choregraph of the encounter and then recommence shooting. McAvoy is physically capable so he'd probably pick up on things pretty quickly (unless it's some elaborate fight stunt from an Xmen movie but clearly that's not what we're going to see here.)
No idea how they really planned it but there is no doubt that the fights were choregraphed.

Egyptian, Spanish and then probably a bunch of other thing in between. I grew up in the rural (US) South, but after just a few decades of living elsewhere my accent is mostly gone unless I intentionally put it on. Well, not gone, just the accent of where else I've lived. Ramirez was in Scotland for who knows how long (you couldn't exactly hop on a plane), so it's not surprising he sounded Scottish.

My first time seeing James McAvoy in a movie was in Wanted and I remember thinking "how the hell does this unknown actor get to star in this action packed movie with Angelina Jolie?"
After watching many of his movies throughout the years, I understand now lol
...because 'Atonement" came out before "Wanted" and that was a critically acclaimed film with lots of Oscar nominations... so he wasn't "unknown' at that time.

Yeah just a gimmick. A good actor, like he is no doubt, is basically a sociopath who can change emotions in the fly. Reading the script that day or a month before doesn’t really matter. Plus this has been done many times where directors don’t give the actors the script until shooting so it doesn’t leak.

That means no one in the movie has script, because they cant predict what McAvoy will say.
Or others have script and McAvoy improvised upon hearing them and caught the drift how/where a particular scene should go.
You're right. They can't predict what he will do or say. But it's possible that they're given a script, and may also be improvising or adjusting their lines accordingly. They're probably also given notes by the director as well, to help them along as they work with McAvoy.
Definitely an underrated actor...he is on so many levels that it's beyond ridiculous...definitely one of my favorites and there aren't many

Amazing! I love seeing James and the other Scottish actors speaking in their true accent! I'm an American and it is a gorgeous accent, also the investigator man in this was also in the movie Filth, Dougie Gilman 😄 also such great Scottish film 🔥
I’ve read tons of comments in the past with the format : “ turns out the Actor was doing this, that, & this (usually something crazy) and the Director just happened to be filming.” Looks like the writer must have seen those type of RUclips comments because they’re ACTUALLY doing it in this movie!!! We’ve come full circle lol. This is going to be amazing.
It's actually an English remake of a French film. Hope this series is as good as the original.

James Mcavoy didn’t have a script, the director wanted his real emotions and had the rest of the cast with a script and James had to answer them truthfully and as he really would.

I don’t understand how this works with no script. They must give him some sort of general background at least. They can’t just send him in there tits up and expect a legit storyline
This works like life itself, you can have an idea or what do you want your life or what will you do, but literally everything changes in a matter of a second
They didn't say there wasn't a script; there just wasn't a script for James. 😂 He had to react and improvise to what the other actors were saying/doing. I'm sure he also received direction as to what the expected outcome of each scene was before they started shooting. Pretty interesting.
It's improv. You are told the story but everything else is experiential and reactionary.
