Thanks for this, Jarryl. This song always makes me miss him so much, and I really don’t listen to it often enough. There was a party at Paisley in I think 2015 where FKA Twigs performed, and then there was just a dance party after. Prince was playing pool by the side of the stage and I was on that side of the room dancing by the DJ booth. I was dancing to Housequake, and Prince’s drummer, Hannah, tapped him on the shoulder and pointed at me dancing. And Prince walked over and stood about 3 feet from me watching me dance. (It wasn’t the first time that happened, but it still made me nervous af. 😂) After watching me for the chorus and half of the second verse, P motioned for the DJ to cut the music. And I was thinking, “damn, Prince, was my dancing really that bad?” (He had definitely cut the music and called folks out on their bad dancing before, but that’s a story for another time.) But he abandoned his game of pool and got on stage and played Housequake for like 20 minutes. It was just him on keyboards with a backing track, and FKA Twigs was dancing on the stage with a strobe light behind her. And it was honestly so dope. It wasn’t the last time that P cut the DJ off to perform the song we were dancing to because he fed off energy like that. But this song will always hold a special place in my heart. 💜
This is my second-favorite performance of Housequake after the one from the Sign o' the Times movie. My third favorite is from Montreux 2013. Prince was in his James Brown bag on this one, tho--even his look is head-to-toe 1970s JB!
