I’ve had some really bad results after taking astaxanthin capsules. After two weeks, my skin turned orange and the whites of my eyes turned yellow. My urine was the color of coffee! I went to see my primary care physician, and she did a blood and urine test that showed my liver enzymes were way too high, causing jaundice. She told me to stop taking that stuff internally-and to go home and go to bed, but drink a full glass of water every two hours until my urine was colorless. It took three days before that happened, but it was another week before the whites of my eyes returned to normal!

A Stanford professor mentioned that the study you talked about finding out that taking vitamin E supplements has been associated with increased lung cancer in smokers was not an accurate study because the test subjects that they tested, to begin with, were smokers. In this case, it would be very difficult to identify whether it was really vitamin E or the habit of smoking that created that symptom. Same here! I find that I use far less product when it's applied to wet/damp skin and it absorbs much better. I also never have a greasy or heavy feeling on my skin. :)
Astaxanthin has been a major gamechanger for me - I take 4mg orally a day. Compared to higher dose Vit C or hyaluronic acid + collagen, astaxanthin got rid of certain stubborn very fine isolated wrinkles whereas the others did not. Salmon is great but is more expensive to be eating it every single day (and there are safety cautions due to increase mercury and PCP content) + only delivers 1 mg per serving. I never used topical stuff...just oral. Astaxanthin has also thickened my fine hair too as it stimulates collagen production (first time ever - collagen supplements alone was not very effective for me). Normally green, they turn red from the astaxanthin they make in response to the intense radiation. That's why people think it may be good for the skin, not solely because it is an antioxidant. I started taking astaxanthin supplements after reading that nematode worms, long used in longevity studies, lived 16 to 30% longer than a control group not given astaxanthin. Recently I read that the same effect happens with yeast, that they live about 15 to 30% longer. Been taking natural algae derived astaxanthin ( as opposed to that made from petrochemicals) orally for my compromised eyes. Can't say if it's made a difference since I don't have a control. As for astaxanthin in skin lotion, it's the same as for sea buckthorn oil... In order to have any meaningful amount of either ingredient, the lotion would have to be light orange, or peachy, since both caroteniods are so intensely orange red that even a wee drop makes its presence known. 🌱

When I took asthaxanthin as a supplement, I became extremely prone to sunburns, which is the exact opposite of the sun protection benefits that are touted. I was vigilant about sun protection the entire time I took it, but still endured TWELVE sunburns.
That makes no sense at all! I'm shocked. I am VERY light skinned and can never be in the sun. I take 12mg daily of Asthaxanthin in the summer (this past summer was my first) and don't wear sunscreen on my shoulders or arms - and I didn't get any burns whatsoever. In the past, I could sunscreen all day long and I would still burn.
Doesn't it have to be controlled and be up against a placebo to have validity? I thought so. I took Statistics in College back when I was a Psychology Major and I believe a lot of these experiments being exhibited lack validity.
Would you consider doing a video explaining why the effectiveness of cosmetics & cosmeceuticals is only as good as their chemical formulations -- it's not just ingredients? Interesting! I have been using this DHC moisturizer, it is very different than any other moisturizer I have ever tried as it leaves very smooth skin behind However cosdna (if that’s the name of the website) says it contains some “4” level ingredient which may contribute to my acne, so I ordered Paula’s Choice Clear Moisturizer to see if that one is milder. Any CeraVe moisturizer breaks me out. I haven’t even realized it is due CeraVe until I put it on my chest area and got completely bumpy area morning after- since then, my bf uses it :)
I cannot use CeraVe either. I get itchy and it's irritating for me. Believe or not, Clinique's moisturizers work like a charm for me. I have tried other stuff to see if I can walk away from them due to them being over-priced but I always end up going back to it the minute my skin acts up.
I have that problem with cerave too. I use them now as hand creams. My skin prefers LaRosche-Posay basic creams in stead. The lipikar family is good and the cica balm.

@@tigerskatemom 🙋 Total game changer for me as well. I take 12 mg daily and have rheumatoid arthritis and I do not take any prescription medication. Astaxanthin is a lifesaver for me. It definitely works for inflammation because all of my inflammatory markers on my blood work have gone down since taking Astaxanthin
Ive taken krill oil for a year. In that I get both astaxhantin and omega 3. So far I havent had any problems.
Astaxanthin is the most potent known antioxidant. Worth combining with Zeaxanthin / Lutein which are used widely to prevent macular degeneration.
This has been my favorite moisturizer for about 3 years now!! Totally obsessed and won’t be without it!
Thanks for the vid. There are many astax skin care line products in Japan. Besides DHC, Fuji Film line ASTALIFT is the other major skin care line. Hope these products are available in the US.
I've been using organic astaxanthin for years....topically and orally. I absolutely see a difference in my skin. My clients use it topically and over 4 months of use, see nice results👍.
Has it helped with your patients who have vitiligo?
Did your skin tone changed?
@@lamapukas I heard you can turn pink
hard to pronuonce but its antioxidant. So eat your berries / carrots / fruits ladies
Fibroblast - I learned this when I had sinus lift watch the science behind how magical our body heals. Just fab to watch feels like meditation to healing while you are actually healing.
I took astaxanthin for 6 months this year from 2 separate brands and i ended up getting SEVERE gastrointestinal problems :( i couldnt figure it out until i ran out of asta and the issues went away. Just so others are aware!!
I am using this particular cream at the moment. It is pleasant to use but as to long term benefits who knows! The only cream I can vouch for is sunscreen - I have used it all my life and it shows.
Happy Thursday! Thank you for all your awesome advice based on science and research. You're such a bright light on this platform. ✨
Thank you! You too!
I purchased the sidmool secret of red astaxanthin serum a few months ago. I found it for 10$ for an ounce bottle so I bought 2 because I found the missha red algae too expensive at the time. It’s got a watery consistency and it hasn’t irritated skin yet (I’m using it in the am). Fragrance free and the majority of the product is supposedly astaxanthin. I’m not mad at it!
Love the DHC product, works well on my sensitive skin. Personally have no problem without product. Appreciate your review! Take care enjoy Holidays safe
Just the video I've been waiting for, thanks Dr. Dray! Happy thursday.
Good day Dr Dray keep uploading n keep us teaching skin lessons❤️❣️😇
Morning!
I love my CeraVe vitamin C serum and don't plan on replacing it anytime soon! :D Happy Thursday!
Do you mind telling me what you like about it? I've been considering buying it. I'd like a real-life experience 😁
@@stephanieabutler I use it in my morning routine. It's the first product I apply after cleansing. It's very smoothing and sinks into my skin. I apply it to damp skin, then I apply the CeraVe moisturizing cream to seal it in. My skin is so soft and smooth!
@@helpfulnatural do you notice a brightening effect? What about lightening of darker patches?
@@stephanieabutler I'm not sure if it's brightening anything since I use Neutrogena's Rapid Wrinkle Repair as a night cream, which contains retinol. It has lightened my dark spots noticeably. I love the smooth texture the vitamin C serum gives my skin but I'm not sure it's doing any brightening of sun damage.
@@helpfulnatural thank you!!🙏
Dr. Dray, you read my mind! I keep seeing the DHC cream at the club and wondered what you thought about it ☺️
Survival 0 from NIOD has astaxanthin in it.
I think Astaxanthin supplement is worthy for body health and beauty. But it always depend on individual..every people body work is different and different result.. Still many people experience the good result by taking Astaxanthin.. For the cream or skincare one, i always prefer to K-beauty product..
I would love a review on theRovectin product after you use it. Thanks so much
Thank you, thank you, for this! This was my question from a while back.
Glad it was helpful!
Would love a review of that product you mentioned in the end! Ps, almost at 1 million followers and I am not sure there is someone more deserving! Thinking of you and your mama...and of course, Tybe! Sorry, think I spelled that wrong!
I’ve never heard of this, Dr. Dray. On a similar note, will consider discussing how/whether or not active ingredients are even able to penetrate the strateum corneum?
I’m beginning to think my water-based serums (eg: arbutin, txa) aren’t doing anything besides hydrate bc they just - can’t. 😭
our skin does a really good job at keeping water out, so I wont be surprised if that was the case
Real good point! I will be waiting for Dr Dray to instruct us about it
Good morning Dr. Dray and ALL from California!!
Happy Thursday!
Have a good day 😊
Please review Rovectin Barrier & Lotus Water Cream. These are the 2 Rovectin products that influencers talk the most about,. Also, can we get some eczema videos for National Ezcema month?
I found face and cream from Rovectin has this ingredient. And, it’s higher place on the list.
I use the rovectin barrier cream and really like it!
Edit: I really think you would enjoy their lotus cream as well, so hydrating and calming :)
I LOVE Rovectin! This creme is amazing!
Dr Dray how are you planning to celebrate the fast approaching 1Million subscribers :)
btw Dr. Dray, you’re glowing more and more everydaaayy 💖
Beta carotene increases the risk of lung cancer in smokers. I never read anything that said vitamin E does that.
You really look great. I’m a busy gal and haven’t been able to watch for a while. You sound so much more at ease and your skin looks great. I don’t know what you are doing but you look beautiful.🙂👍
good morning Dr Dray... happy Thursday to everybody !!!
Happy Thursday!
Enjoy your day 😊
Really appreciate this video Dr. Dray. Happy Friday Eve everyone!
Same to you!
Can you do a video on skincare while breastfeeding including chemical exfoliation? It would probably get heaps of views!
Great idea!!! She has some on pregnancy already!
Omg not me and my newly purchased Vitamin C Serum watching this and thinking i should've waited 😃
That’s how I am in so many products and then the video comes out!
I ditched mine.
@@marianna7702 why

Yayyyyyy I'm early.lots of love Dr Dray from India ❤️
Happy Thursday!
I was so curious about the DHC Astaxanthin cream, thanks for all the info!
L’oreal C serum that comes on a tube is amazing... at least on dry skin :)
Any review you do is worth watching, so yes please, the product review would be appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to post. I watch and re-watch your videos and continue to learn something new each time.
I love your jacket! Where did you get that?
Yes please review the k beauty product , you are the best Dr Dray !
Happy Thursday Dr Dray and peeps ❤️ ❤️
Happy Thursday!

hey dr dray! could you do a video about Diet and skin? Is eating (plant-based) sources of Vitamin A and Vit C better than topical application?
I have many videos on this
@@DrDrayzday can you link to those videos?
NIOD survival 0 serum has astaxanthin, superoxide dimutase and pycnegenol. What are your thoughts on that?
Powerhouse, NIOD is the best.
@@lonewolf5969 Agreed. NIOD is awesome.
@@vacationeyes6430 in general the ingredients protects you from free radicals and oxidation specially against the sun damage, but adding sunscreen on top is the best. I’d say its even crazier if it has resveratrol in it but SOD having its place is awesome too cause it has very long lasting antioxidant activity. One of the best from the house of NIOD for sure.
@@lonewolf5969 Of course Sunscreen is a must. An awesome antioxidant product like NIOD survival 0 + a great sunscreen like La Roche Posay UVMune400 is all we need for our AM routine.
That is why I trust You the most. 🙂❤️
Astaxanthin is part of my daily supplements. This stuff is amazing. I also put it in my moisturizer.
Thanks Dr Gray for the explanation. What about supplementing fish oil and glutathione pls talk about them as well
OMG!! i’ve been looking into that Rovectin cream as well, mainly because their conditioning cleanser is one of my all time favorites. The brand in all is absolutely worth checking out! Thanks for the vid as always doc ^^
look forward to trying
When I took asthaxanthin as a supplement, I became extremely prone to sunburns, which is the exact opposite of the sun protection benefits that are touted. I was vigilant about sun protection the entire time I took it, but still endured TWELVE sunburns.
OMG! I'm so sorry this happened to you. Very scary.
Stop eating so many PUFAs then
That makes no sense at all!
What is your Age and how much have you taken in mg ?
Doesn't it have to be controlled and be up against a placebo to have validity? I thought so. I took Statistics in College back when I was a Psychology Major and I believe a lot of these experiments being exhibited lack validity.
not to sell, lol
Would you consider doing a video explaining why the effectiveness of cosmetics & cosmeceuticals is only as good as their chemical formulations -- it's not just ingredients? For me, it's the wild card in trying to decide what is going to help or be a waste of money, though I know there's no getting around testing a product out. Thanks!
it is a wild card
I've used this supplement when I use to go to the tanning bed and before I used it I would always burn in one spot on my face after taking it I never burned now I take it with high spf to help prevent damage
Thank you for researching this! I used the rejuvi asta serum a while back and while it’s only my experience, I found it helped lighted my hyperpigmentation significantly more than vitamin C (plus Vit C always makes me flush on the cheeks!)
Yes, please continue and review what you try that has this ingredient in it
Yes, i would love to here a review on Rovectin. Thanks!
hope you have a great Thursday
Happy Thursday!
Happy Thursday Tony J 😃
Thank you for the video, as usual you are on point all the time! You the best!
thanks for watching
Hey, thank you for your reviews, helpful as always 💖
i wonder what are your thoughts on the la roche posay PIGMENTCLAR line & their "special" ingredient phe-resorcinol?
I'd really appreciate a review for it,, especially their pigmentclar sunscreen 🙏😊
we dont have that here
I'm an LBO with 'Lifeis Speed' where Astaxanthin oil, combined with Wheatgerm and Rice Bran oils, has shown 100% results in improving immunity and qualitative regeneration of cells, in past 10 years.
@@lydiakarma1676 which moisturizer do you recommend? I ordered this paula’s choice clear moisturizer- so we shall see 😂
I have that problem with cerave too. I use them now as hand creams. My skin prefers LaRosche-Posay basic creams in stead. The lipikar family is good and the cica balm.
Bettter taking it orally. Good for your eyes, my eyes don’t strain as much..
