Somehow that quickly got ignored. Maybe I have to try oils now. It’s hard to find one that’s not irritating.
I just want to kindly point out - you answered your own question at the end of your comment. Many companies went “oil free” when consumers stopped using their products containing oils because the oils were blamed for acne breakouts, skin irritation, and other issues like seborrheic dermatitis(my mom was advised by her dermatologist to only use oil free products to control this condition and treats his directive like it’s gospel.) I’m curious if these products just contained poor quality oils or if there were other chemicals used in production that degraded the oils or caused problems on the skin and were overlooked as being the cause.
Glad I found your channel 🙂I have never stuck to any skin care routine. Have been starting to look into oils... Guess what ladies - nearly 70 now and not having a skin care routine hasn't resulted in lots of wrinkles! Nutrition plays a big part, as does sleep.
Not all the OTC moisturizers are of hyaluronic acid. Most of them are composed of oils , propylene glycol , butters, ceramides, occlusives, humectants etc which are helpful for dryskin. Yeah, oils can be used as moisturizers, but it can lead to folliculitis sometimes. Your post is misleading. I doubt if you are a dermatologist and research better before you pose yourself as a doctor.😂
I do actually live in a very humid climate! No not rainforest but air you can wear. Hyaluronic acid works great under my make up applie first to a damp face.
I live in an area classified as a temperate rainforest in the Appalachian mountains. I also put a serum with HA on damp skin every morning, then a moisturizer. Works great for my dry skin.
I live in the humid tropical climate. I used to use only coconut oil, yet over time my skin turned really oily yet also rough on the surface. Then i started incorporating a HA toner (japan's Hada labo) and my skin felt moisturized and plump and the texture got better. Since i'm oily skinned i quit the coconut oil and only used the HA. If you live in humid climates HA actually works to hydrate.
Omggg same. My skin is still oily thanks to the hot and humid climate of SEA, but much better since I no longer have dry patches in some area thanks to HA. Judging from your username, are you from Indonesia?
Coconut oil is known to be drying and comodegenic. You could try Castor oil, raw shea butter, almond oil or jojoba oil. Castor oil has been a game changer. I had solar urtacaria bumpsfor a while which disappeared after 3 days of using Castor oil.
I live in a humid not tropical place and it’s the opposite for me. HA was the worst on my skin, making it even drier. I guess it really dependes where you live and how your body reacts to it

This is so true! Before I got into skincare 2019, I just used coconut oil and my skin was never dry and always looked good. I also started (and will never stop my tretinoin in 2019). I always get the best results with just tretinoin cream in the evening, sunscreen in the morning and cleansing in the evening. Some oil over tretinoin occasionally feels good too.All the serums and „magic creams and potions“ are just fancy and aren’t doing anything! Stay bold as you are! God I love this guy! Speaks the truth! I’ve literally saved $$$$ every year going forward. My new routine, low strength tretinoin 0.25 am and pm, Korean sunscreen and in the evening a face oil by the ordinary.
The trick to applying ha is to put it on over a wet face, not a dry one so it will absorb the water on the skin instead of drawing it out. But no moisturizers are not bad, and no you cannot train your skin to not be dry. Dryness or oiliness is another word for skin type, and that is determined by genetics and ruled by hormones. There is no mechanism in the epidermis that tells the oil glands to produce more or less oil. If that were true nobody would ever be oily either, and if you felt dry your skin would just make some oil and boom, no more dryness.. no thats not how it works. Study histology and get back to me, let me know what part of the anatomy in the skin is sending signals to the sebaceous glands. Ill wait.

Any particular product you would recommend for us redheads?

Harvard Health also recommends treating dry skin by soaking it in water and then covering it in an occlusive (they mention Vaseline). Do you think there are any potential disadvantages to the skin by using occlusives like oil or petrolatum? I read a few studies online that concluded both prolonged occlusion and prolonged water exposure disrupted the stratum corneum and induced barrier damage. I wonder if something like squalane oil would be occlusive enough to have negative effects.
I wouldn't say squalane is a complete occlusive - only when you apply so much that it forms a thick layer. I personally recommend to my patients to apply a thin layer so that gaseous exchange can still take place and you're not blocking the skin like an occlusive. That way, were trying to mimic what nature intended for the skin as closely as possible.

Ur body already makes its own moisture. It gets moisture from blood capillaries and natural moisturizing agents like urea, squalene, ceramides etc. We are brainwashed by the skin Industry and their marketing that we really need a moisturizer. Like he says oil repels water and its the perfect moisturizer. Some examples are olive oil, Vaseline, castor oil. The only suitation where u need a moisturizer is extremely dry environment or using tretinoin. Glycerin is the real humactant that gets the job done. But companies don't promote it. Because they want to make more 🤑 rather than ur health. HA actually dries ur skin when ur not in a very humid environment. Edit: I am a Pharmacist

Hi Dr. Abs great stuff! So glad I came across your channel! Can squalene oil be used for my whole body to replace body lotion? I have dry skin on my body and combination skin on my face. Your response will be very helpful & appreciated. Thank you
Don't you mean what happens when putting moisturizer on dry skin - transepidermal water loss? Which is what happens when the air legit sucks the moisture from your skin? Folks you should be putting moisturizer on damn/slightly wet skin for best results. That holds moisture captive and locks it in. I never knew this growing up. Because when I'd put lotion on dry skin it made my skin drier but when i started putting lotion on damp skin it changed the game for me. My skin legit stays moisturized af. You can even do this with something as cheap as vaseline. You don't need fancy, expensive moisturizers or even ones that have ceramides and all this other stuff.
Nope. Pure oil on my face? Eczema and clogged pores! I’m glad this works for some, but this is terrible advice for someone with seborrheic dermatitis or eczema prone skin!
Try applying HA on very damp skin. Like still dripping a little after cleansing. Work it in with the water and add more water if it feels tacky. Top with your favorite oil and your skin will be much softer and smoother.

Chanel, Dior, La Mer and dozens of others would have easily place a 3-figure price tag on the simplest concoction - and just imagine how readily everyone would have been buying those had they been producing great result if now we’re buying those “useless” in the Dr’s opinion!

Oils can disrupt natural skin oil barrier and make skin even drier when not used continuously. People with very oily skin may benefit as oil production decreases but is it worth it?
Please please please do a video on very oily skin! I hate putting on any type of moisturisers on my face, but i still do because i am so confused about what I should use!

Are oils necessarily occlusive ? Have they been tested for their capacity to reduce TEWL? I thought that by far the most occlusive ingredient that you could use was petrolatum, and that oils were not that good in doing this. Additionally, a lot of moisturisers include oils in their formulation. I am a bit dubious about this
ekhm... except sebum we produce isnt good at trapping the water. and it's possible to have dry AND oily skin at the same time. also, ha is drying because it sits on the top of the skin, there are better humectants, like glycerin, allantoin or dexpanthenol.
Understand your skin is the key. Use whatever that helps your skin. I use HA and Vit C serum on damp skin followed by aloe gel moisturizer. Then sunscreen on it. In evenings, HA serum and then moisturizer and tretinoin at night or just basting my skin with diaper rash cream. Works wonders to my skin because mine is oily and dry. It doesn't need anymore oil but moisture. I follow Dr. Idriss advice but improvise because now I understand my skin better.

I’m curious if these products just contained poor quality oils or if there were other chemicals used in production that degraded the oils or caused problems on the skin and were overlooked as being the cause.
Cetaphil is extremely easy to find and it has oil. You just need to read more labels lol

I avoid HA like fire, my skin feels so dry after using it.
Works great for my dry skin.
this man wants to take a dump of HA. IT IS NOT A BAD PRODUCT. IT IS JUST USED WRONG. im not going to put oil on my hormonal, acne prone skin. lol.
So what you're saying that the abs is wrong? This goes against everything what you said on this video.
I live in a humid not tropical place and it’s the opposite for me. HA was the worst on my skin, making it even drier. I guess it really dependes where you live and how your body reacts to it
@@thehyatt straight castor oil is too thick for me and it's also quite drying. I've tried using it to thicken my eyebrows but it caused CCs. My fave oil so far is squalane

Essential oils are bad for the skin. Like the fragrance ones. Their not meant for the skin. Now cold press unrefined oils are good.

@@Dianawalesthis is what I’ve done for years and so far it’s kept my skin good 🙏
@@Dianawalesand what if i have a sunscreen that contains both HA and oil? Is that good?
Most oils are not highly occlusive. Vaseline is far more occlusive which is why it protects the skin so well.
At night, I use jojoba oil in the shower to cleanse my face, then RetinA then castor oil. In the morning, I use castor oil with facial massage
I think so much is based on the persons chemistry as well. When I’ve used things with HA they dry out my skin and I never understood why so many people love them! But if so many people swear by it I have to believe it must work for them.
I’m obsessed with neem oil!! It doesn’t smell good but it works like magic to decrease any irritation or dryness!
I cannot imagine need oil. I use it as an anti fungal and pest control on my plants in the garden. Smells like a$$.
@@debyjohnson oh yeah it smells bad and tastes even worse 😂 I was looking for a stronger alternative than coconut oil for oil pulling (dental hygiene) and started learning about its other benefits. I can’t stand the taste so I mix a drop with toothpaste.. many uses for it if you can stomach it :)
And don’t let the brands and sponsors make you change the direction of your content for cash 😉🫶🏻✨
You don't need tretinoin, you need different food. Find the root cause, not a drug.

God I love this guy! Speaks the truth! I’ve literally saved $$$$ every year going forward. My new routine, low strength tretinoin 0.25 am and pm, Korean sunscreen and in the evening a face oil by the ordinary.
what do you use to cleanse off the Korean sunscreen?
Ill wait.
Thank you, you just saved me a bunch of money. I was listening to several yt channels about the best skincare and HA was recommended by all. I actually use oils like carrot oil etc for a while. You got yourself a new subscriber.
Dear Dr Abs, I must say that you have the most beautiful skin! Wow! is there anything special or different skin products you would recommend for a woman with natural red hair? Of course, I think sun damage started with the terrible sun burns I got when I was a kid-my family is French and everyone else has the typical darker skin and hair. Any particular product you would recommend for us redheads?
Oh my gosh! This is the channel I never knew I needed. Just subscribed. Thank you for confirming what I have been feeling. I always felt HA was so drying but everyone swore by it. It’s like the “emperor has no clothes” on situation.

Vaseline is made from petrol products- not what I want on my skin.
New sub here from Vancouver Island. Wow! Great info, thank you for your honesty & timely info. I’ve found the vast array of products & care regimes confusing. Do you mind if I ask what kind of laser treatment you had done?
If you have dry skin, buy pure glycerine, mix a few drops of it with a few drops of water and apply it on your damp skin. Thank me later 😁
This is true!
Yep, I started doing this everyday in June and my skin has no longer been dry using glycerin
It’s good for your hair too
Glycerin also removes moisture from your skin if the exterior environment is incompatible. Glycerin is better if you use it in winter to pull moisture from the Aïr instead of your skin like in the summer.

Looking forward to your answer. Great work really. Sharing your Clips here in germany. Not using all those hyaluronic acid moisturisers anymore.
Snail mucin is a complete gimmick I think. Niacinamide can be a great ingredient. I think TheOrdinary do a great niacinamide powder that can be mixed with things. Danke schon :)
Oil is a sealant. Not a moisturizer. You can have oily skin that is dry and flaky. Use a moisturizer then massage an oil over top to seal moisture in.

To be fair, per ml those two oils you recommend are way more expensive than any moisturizer I regularly use. $50 CAD for 100ml won't go far if you regularly moisturize full body and not just your face.

Not quite. You can have dry or oily skin and still have your skin lacking moisture, hydration. Oils help replenish natural oils in your skin, that's why people with dry skin like using oils. But if your skin is dehydrated, regardless if it's oily or not you need to replenishes moisture, water not oils. In a few words, your skin is lacking natural oils, use oils, but if you lacking moisture use moisturizer with HA. If your skin is lacking both, oils ( dry skin) and moisture ( dehydrated), use both oils and HA moisturizer.

You need to use HA or glycerine with water not alone.
I used oils every day and every night. My skin loves the oils. I play with many oils. Love my oils and they love me 😂❤
Can I believe that beauty brands and all dermatologists are greedy? Probably. Can I believe that they are all stupid? Nah. Most brands are not in business of selling ingredients, they are in business of selling products. So, had everything Dr. Abs said in this video been true, we all would have been swimming in brand name oils. Chanel, Dior, La Mer and dozens of others would have easily place a 3-figure price tag on the simplest concoction - and just imagine how readily everyone would have been buying those had they been producing great result if now we’re buying those “useless” in the Dr’s opinion!
