The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III is a role-playing video game developed by Nihon Falcom for the PlayStation 4. It is a part of the long-running The Legend of Heroes series, and a direct sequel to Trails of Cold Steel II. The game was released in Japan in September 2017, and will be released worldwide in October 2019. A sequel, Trails of Cold Steel IV: The End of Saga, was released in Japan in late 2018.
The game is a direct sequel to the prior two Trails of Cold Steel games, picking up one and a half years after the events of Trails of Cold Steel II. The story is centered around main character Rean Schwarzer, now a military professor, as well as his students, and the rest of his military school friends from the prior two entries, notably exploring subjects such as the mysterious origins of Rean's birth, and what others have been up to since the events of the prior games.

You got me started on trails after seeing one of your videos randomly. Currently about 2/3rds through Cold Steel 2 and am dying to get to three. Much respect man!
The console market is 40% bigger...but On PC you can always go back to classic games on your current PC without having to buy old consoles.
My guy was rocking his 4k monitor and that before he upgraded his phone that is some dedication.
lol I just play games on my 4K TV. I'm a fake PC gamer.
Nice review on the PC port Scott. Although hearing a positive review by you on the PC version was good to my ears, I do wish you'd also release your next episode of Zero alongside videos this short, or at least, more than once a week. Watching you play Zero + some background trivia or flashbacks to references from older trails games make the experience the best.

This review couldn't be any better.
The customisation tool for graphics leaves you to fully optimize the game. I have 8gb RAM, an Intel i3-7100 and no graphics card and the game still ran pretty well on medium. Of course Sankt district took a few minutes to load, but other than that I had no other problems like crashes etc.
About localization, yes there are some mistakes but I believe they'll fix them. That thing about Rean not talking when others do, pretty jarring I agree.
As for it's price, I bought it day 1 on Steam for 50€ and got some bonus DLC cause of the first week PC launch celebration. It definitely deserves 60€ too. Took me 105 hours on normal on the first playthrough and it still wasn't enough xD
Amazing game, amazing story and I'm so hyped about ToCS 4. So while I wait I'll play again the Sky trilogy, all the ToCS and watch your playthrough of Zero no Kiseki. Continue the good job!
Have fun with the Sky games. The first 6 hours of Sky FC are (imo) horrendous, but it really gets a ton better. It's one of my favorite video games ever for a reason!
The first chapter is slow, but after that the story takes off. Especially when they get the Black Orbment ;) Trails are my favorite too.
I appreciate the thoroughness in describing discrepancies from PS4 to PC, like “Blazing Demon” vs. “Almighty Conflagration” and “detective” vs. “inspector.” To even notice these minor differences in a 60+ hour game is commendable. Are the differences a big deal? Nope. Does it change the game’s meaning? Nope, the terms are interchangeable. That said, perhaps I’m jaded because, as an oldster of 43, I work in an office where most employees don’t even bother to construct complete sentences. Anyway, nice review! Keep up the good work! 😎
Another voice line that seem to bug me is whenever rean use his spirit unification and use his s-craft. Instead of saying ashen slash fatal leaves, he will still say 7th slash fallen leaves.
Interesting. Didn't know that.
I am legit still surprised that Cold Steel III on the PC is half the size of the PS4 version lol (and yes, I did make my own in-house measurements)
Durante released the specific file compression techniques used to reduce the size on Steam community. Check it out, nice read! Plus Durante is a genius tbh. He needs to be hired for every pc port.
Planning to play the game on switch so if you're planning to get that as well I wouldn't mind a review.
I would love to hear what you think about the switch port as well. Tried the demo and I think the performance was quite poor. Not sure if the full game will be better or not.
Jetatomic Maybe I am crazy or something cause I didn’t notice the performance much worst than the ps4 version to me I only noticed a resolution downgrade.
Im curious on it too. PC may allways be my platform of choice, but I cannot deny having Trails games on a portable system is a awesome, specially when you want to introduce someone to a series.
yes, i'd like to know what your opinions about CS3 for switch will be
On the topic of performance, I played the game on an aging notebook (2017 hardware, integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 card, Intel i5 processor and 6gb ram). I could run it mostly fine on the lowest settings possible, with only certain areas suffering frame losses and such (Dreichel's Plaza, Sankt District, Vainqueur Street in particular).
The only gripe I had was that loading times were LOOOONG, particularly in Heimdallr. This is not that bad, but there are certain cinematics that go from a scene in a place to a scene somewhere else, and they took forever. The train ride at the Summer Festival or some of the scenes in the last chapter in particular suffered this.
All in all, it could have been better, but considering how old my hardware is I'm glad it was playable at all. The game is fantastic, even with some technical issues.
Rean Torture Simulator III is my favourite Torture Simulator game. Can't wait for Rean Torture Simulator IV!
Just a quick question: did you report to NISA about the "missing" updates that are on PS4 but not (currently) on PC?
Thanks a bunch. I've really appreciated your Trails videos over the years. For Cold Steel, I went with PS4 for 1-3 and probably 4 as well. For Trails in the Sky, I loved the art style when I saw the trailers and gameplay on PSP, but I went the PC route on Steam (Still working through them). Now we just need a western release of Zero and Ao (Blue) and then we're golden. I know Trails of the Beginning is going to be released in the future, but I'll need to play 4 first. All the more confusing since 4 is titled End of Saga. The question is which saga? Cold Steel or Trails as a whole? (Feel free to use that line in a video). Anyway thanks for the review. Hope your Switch review turns out okay. I'm concerned about Performance. Hope they won't need to borrow space from certain files in the game to make it run decently.
Well, is it just me or when it comes to voice acting. I'd prefer the JAPANESE audio with English texts... LOL
Got this day one on PC full price which I rarely do and was well worth it. Hope the ports continue to be great and agree with they should fix those slight corrections in the PC port that were done on the PS4 version. Would be interested in how the Switch port runs but I can't imagine it will do well in those highly intense areas as noted in the video and from my own experiences.
In terms of the Sankt District being bad. Kondo talks a lot about how the phyre engine has a lot of trouble displaying this many unique models at once. The sankt district, with it's dense population, is very densely populated with a LOT of unique models. Basically, it's a limit with Phyre for the most part it seems.
Not surprising since a little research reveals that the last stable build of the phyre engine is from Jan 2012 apparently.
I've already pre-ordered the switch version but I'd love to hear your take on it!
Incredible you think exactly what I do about this port.
ALSO, there's a thing I hate on besides the buttons downgrade, the XBOX buttons should be the XONE ones, but it's the 360 just like CS1-2. That's LAZY.
There's more: The TURBO feature works completely differently here: Not only it has the old icon from CS1-2 replacing the cool looking PS4 version of it (That looks amazing and I hate downgrades on visuals, no matter what), the functionallity of TURBO is also very different. ON PC it works like CS1-2, you have to HOLD a button.
On PS4, however, you just need to press one button and the Turbo mode will start. It's speed is perfect for faster battles and grinding, while it's also looks good onscreen. On PC, you have to hold it, that silly small old PS3 version of turbo (that what looks like since it started on PC for CS1-2), will display and it will only stay active while pressing the button JUST LIKE CS1-2 on PC. Which means, they just copy-pasted the things they had on CS1-2 over 3, EVEN IF the original version of it on PS4 does it better. Instead of aknowledging that, they decided to just put their own (DURANTE team I mean), and replacing it. Making the PC version of CS3 looking a little rushed over the edges. It's hard to think that it would be THIS huge of a deal for me, because I love PC, but just because the PS4 version of the game is exactly like the original Japanese release of the game, it also means it's the way Falcom envisioned those features for the game, the way they work and look on PC, it's just Durante's team vision for it, and it does works for CS1-2 while those versions didn't had that, but it's a thing built-in on the original version they decided to Remove and add what they had making the game look Rough over the edges on both buttons layouts and Turbo icon on top screen looking VERY out of place compared with the turbo on PS4 version.
Will I wait for a sale? Hell yeah. Will I play it on Pc? Maybe in five years?
I'm gonna play CS4 on PS4 AGAIN, pay full price for it again, because as much as the port works, those little things that they decided to change because lazyness (re-utilizing what they have from other ports of OLD VERSIONS of the game created for OLDER PLATFORM, IS, LAZY) just kill the game for me. If I had never played the game on PS4 I would NEVER complain about it.
But that's me though.
Hey Scott, personally what do you prefer for the best platform to play CS III/IV(Although not out as of now) on? PC or PS4? I have no particular preference for either system. I just cant make a choice lol
If not devolping with PC in mind, makes it one of the few jrpgs to support PC features like Ultrawide support and Unlocked framerates then i'm all for them continuing this :D
You beat me to the comparison video 😂
So much for playing Animal Crossing New Horizons daily
I'm surprised the CS3 suffered lag on the PS4 Pro. I never had issues with the game at all on my Slim version.
I think it's because the PS4 pro game goes to 4k visuals, and this is a bit too much for the pro.
Odd, I never once ran into performance issues with CS3 on ps4. Of course I tend to run my Ps4 pro at 1080p with boost enabled because its the only way I can get my tv to enable UHD color.
Dang can't wait for Cold Steel 4 aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I'd love see what you have to say about CS3's Switch port, since that's how I'm planning to play the game. (I don't have a PS4, and the only competent computer I have is a Chromebook which miraculously is able to play all the PSP Trails games.)
Great, informative video by the way.
Seconded, my PC is ancient hardware that can barely run something like Total War Warhammer 1 or Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 on low settings and my only consoles are from Nintendo, so the switch port is my best bet at playing CS3 and 4 properly.......hell, there was even a spell in Sky SC that dropped the frame rate ever so slightly
I'm curious if the Switch port is closer to the PC release or the PS4 version
Gaurav Shirodkar I’m pretty sure it’s close to the ps4 version but with slightly turned down graphics
@@OverJayYT Slightly? The difference is huge. PS4 version looks clean, while the Switch version is a blurry mess
I'm going to be playing this on a Ryzen 9 5900HS and RTX 3060 laptop GPU, ideally at 1440p60. That's what I ran Cold Steel I and I at maxed out. Fingers crossed that I'll be able to do the same for Cold Steel III and IV.
I played CSIII in JP so I'm assuming the lines were accurate?
5:41 maybe because I just started on the cold steel arc from 1 to midway in 3 currently, but isn't mcburn always the blazing demon?(maybe it's because I don't recognize the word conflagration, I think it was, but point being both titles are accurate as he is indeed a fire type xD)
Are you going to do a playthrough of Zero no Kiseki and Ao no Kiseki when it comes to Steam next year? I noticed on Steam that they are releasing the two on PC. Unfortunately, I don't own a PC, but I would love to hear your thoughts on the game.
Those are Chinese and Korean.
this game runs great on pc, I have a mid end set-up and I constantly get 60 fps throughout the whole game on high settings 1080p.
Gotta thank Durante for that.
In Sankt District heimdallr my Ps4 pro is like an old man with some kind of a lung illness wtf
Ok my opinions about the PC port, overall it's awesome, But the only two problem areas performance wise for me were just the Great forest and the Sankt district were both pretty poor FPS wise.
Also saw that part where the VA says inspector Lloyd Bannings. I was legit just like what? I'm sure there's others issues too but those are the ones I noticed the most.
My specs: core i7 9700k, RT 5700 XT, 32 GB Ram
Everything maxed, MSAA 8x, 1080p
Maximum FPS: 144 (capped)
Minimum FPS: 60
the minimum FPS happens at the same places for pretty much all platforms: Crossbell Waterfront, that very dense forest in chapter 1, etc.
I believe one area in the game can't go above 60 because of the way Falcom designed it.
@@KillScottKill The only time I was locked into 60 fps is in battles in the spiral area in the last dungeon. For some reason the battles are locked at 60 but not when I'm outside of battle.
Nice CPU, faster than the Ryzen 5 2600 I have. I have the RX 5700 XT and I mostly use it for 1440p in my LG 4K TV.
@Aether Locke $1500 CND
Am I crazy but is the dialogue audio quality really bad?
Pc version is why i get to know about this masterpiece. I love Falcom since they bring Jrpgs to pc
I loved this game to and I played it on my PS4 and uploaded it but I am going to play IV from steam because some bits I couldn't record. I didn't really like the partially voiced scenes ever or the little voice change they did in it like Millium and Gwyn.
Hey scott as our community of trails players generally are always looking for the most definitive and authentic way to experience these games, do you think you will touch base on the topic of "censorship" since that seems to be a growing issue now a days and many trails purists that are part of the discord and has been with the series for a very long time have to wonder how the transition from xseed to NIS is handling the localization of these new games and if they are up to standard quality in terms of culture or censorship edits and certain things of that nature. Not alot of people tackle these issues so I am just asking if you could since you have alot of experience probably in this area as well being part of the geofront team that handled much of the work on the zero project.
My opinion is that there is no evidence of legitimate censorship on NIS America's behalf. I've yet to see anyone provide hard-line proof of content and intent being changed in the game. What little has been pointed at can be chalked up to over-editing or just localizing things to where they actually sound like someone could speak them in English.
If there were anything to censor in this game, it would be toning down how hard Musse comes on to Rean, and yet it's still fully there and they even push it further some times. Quite frankly, I think the censorship discussion around Cold Steel III is a witch hunt taken out of context by people looking for something to be mad about and that's all I'll say on the matter.
Played the game on base on PS4 no problem with frame rate at all but will get the game on Steam mainly because it is Falcom rather than NIS America not really fondly of them. Seen the game on sale about a few times on PSN
Playing it in i3, nvidia mx150 2GB, ram 8 GB, and SSD
Setting are fps cap 60, resolution 1920x1080, graphic medium, low shadow, view distance on
Surprisingly it looks good and stable fps unless in specific area like crossbell park and heimdallr shopping plaza I got suddenly fps drop
Later on I'm try using another laptop which are i5, nvidia gtx 1050 4GB, ram 16 GB, and HDD. Setting are graphic all high, shadow high, fps cap 60, resolution 1920x1080 and damn tocs never been so gorgeous like this before
Hope in tocs 4 later we'll get more performance optimization for low medium spec
Oh btw..
Ink black as despair
Before I watch this, can somoene tell me if this is spoilers if you haven't played the game yet? Thanks
spoiler free
@@abbyp9394 If you have not played or experienced the series at all, then yes i would avoid anything cold steel related. But if you played through the first 2 cold steel games and are just looking for a quick review of CS III, then yeah your safe.
Well, 4K Max it's not possible in a RX 5700XT. Actually, the RX 5700 XT is not for current generation games at 4K, it can easily do that with the past generation.
I had to adjust FOV to default, Shadows at High and MSAA (I may be wrong with the acronym) at 4X. All other settings were at Max. Locked 60 FPS at 1440p was the best I could do.
There was one weird issue though. The item menus in battle and the status screen had a slowdown or stutter. Since in those menus the GPU is not pushed, the RX 5700 XT lowered it's speed and got "lazy". I did not mind a lot about it though and played the game.
Overall, a great port. Many people complained that they could not max the game but this was quite the challenge for Falcon to develop a game for the PS4. There is some difference between this and the past games.
Am I just not that bright for seeing the difference between inspector and detective? xD
ltldr. Its good and its the best version of the game. Thanks for the review!.
Didn't mc burn have two titles almighty conflagration and blazing demon
Yes. It's supposed to say the first at Orchis Tower. The second appears the next day at Stargazer's when he transforms. I checked the JP when I forwarded that to NISA last year before they made the correction.
How can you call this a good port if it doesn't even have mouse support ?
any game that's 80+ hrs is worth full price
star knight took me 130 hours casual play
Even when more than half of the game is just having nonsense non-story related filler?
Albert Garcia world building
How does CS4 run on the PS4? Anyone played the Japanese version?
I've heard some of the same areas that were bad in CS3 were better in CS4.
I already play all ,but stills need to replay for gain all trophy I have all dlc purchase to
The only reason why I don't play the PC version, is because I am so tempted to use cheat engine all the time.
can someone give a good keyboard setup. i hate how nonintuitive it is.
@Tommy Le my father will be real happy when I ask him for a controller. I had to buy the game behind his back.
These Trails games become dirt cheap during most of the annual steal sales. Sky 1 was like $10 and I got CS1 for 20
in the Philippines you can buy this game for a little over 20 dollars on steam hahahha.
So you play 4k and 4x aa...
Wtf thats overkill lol
Disappointed that 3 cant carry over from 2s saves info.
No reason for it to carry over. The carry over from 1 to 2 wasn’t monumental or anything
@@wesleylover7860 Yeah most of the meaningful carry over is the story dialogue from old games. Like FC to SC or Zero to Azure. Some items also come in handy like the rebranded Gladiatior items in 3rd. But if the game is designed for no carry over, like a 1,5 year timeskip probably should be, then everything is fine.
I enjoyed 1 but I just couldn’t finish 2. It was the same repetitiveness of 1 with a new skin and the snow town was nowhere near as interesting as the university in between missions. And boy does the combat get old after a while. I’m hoping one day to get back into it, but I just don’t know. I did love the characters. But the story was also really slow paced. I feel like all the good bits and surprises of 1 were shoved in at the very end. And 2 doesn’t have any good bits halfway through the game where I quit.
I highly recommend going back to 2. Act 1 of the game is a slog and probably the worst part of the Cold Steel portion of the series (or maybe the series as a whole) but Act 2 is a whole other thing altogether. It has lots of interesting events and character interactions, not even counting the fact that it's the finale of the first half of Cold Steel and is occurring at the same time as Ao no Kiseki.
I'm kind of the opposite. 1 was an absolute slog with characters you couldn't pay me to care about and zero plot relevance other than something you learned in Ao anyway.
Then 2 at least has a story off the bat, and the lack of school atmosphere really goes a long way into making things tolerable. I still didn't care about anyone outside of Fie and Sara, but that's because the black hole that is Rean was busy sucking it up, and every character only exists to prop up Rean.
I can say 3 is better on all fronts. While Rean is a black hole to the old Class VII, the new class at least exists outside of Rean, and the school atmosphere isn't as bad because you hardly spend any time there. Jusis and Millium also seem to escape Rean's graviational orbit and have some interactions outside of him, but it's only limited to those 2 and the new Class VII.
It doesn't get any better, all the interesting things happen in the final chapter. And i read that CS III is like CS I all over again but with other characters.
Im a Laura kind of dude
In my currency cold steel 3 costs like 20 bucks on steam.
about 25 bucks for me when it was on sale with all the dlc's included
this game is such slow burn, that its almost ash.
Thats just coldsteel in general, don't expect to have anything big happen before the final chapter.
Towa is best girl.
Inspector??? Lol.
Ima play this game from the start I tried to play this on vita and it’s pretty bad lol
I don't think CS3 is on the vita.
@@MaskedKingDavid I meant as far as part 1 sorry lol
ps4 slime no problem with the game
