I just started playing this series back in May. I started with Cold Steel I and II and loved those games so much I decided to backtrack and play the Sky trilogy and Crossbell games and now I'm replaying CS I & II before I play III. I haven't played anything other than these games for like 3 months straight and I still can't get enough. The worldbuilding is unlike any other series in gaming. This stuff is literally Tolkien or Robert Jordan tier when it comes to how detailed and intricate it is.

Lmaooo I genuinely thought i made this comment because its exactly what I did and went back to sky, although over a little longer time span. Im currently on Cold Steel II and I own 3 and 4 ready to go when im ready. I think looking back, cold steel 1 and 2 are still awesome but without the mystery and twists it doesnt replay that well. The Sky and Crossbell stories and worlds are just so good, like I can hear the Hamel theme and start tearing up just based on connotation, and that goes double after hearing the epic version of Silver Will. Series has changed me as a person and I hope I never forget these stories, truly special stuff

I can only say that I have started with Trails of Cold Steel, only to realize halfway the first chapter that it was only a part of a massive series. After some investigation, I decided to drop Cold Steel for a while, and play the Trails in The Sky series first. It was (in my humble opinion) the best decision that I ever made. By playing these games (and the Crossbell dualogy after that), I had so much more understanding what was going on in Cold Steel (especially the later parts) and it made the Cold Steel sereies even better. Trails in the sky is an older game, and it shows. Although the graphics are dated, I felt familiar with the game mechanics very fast. Especially if you plan to play Cold Steel III, you will see back very familiar faces from the older games. This is even more the case with the upcoming Cold Steel IV. Even if you do not want to play those older games, I advise to take some time to watch a resume of the story upon playing Cold Steel.
Although all of above is not really needed to enjoy Cold Steel, it will make the game even more fun than it already is.

@@jclosed2516 I'd always recommend getting into Trails in the Sky and the two Crossbell games Zero/Ao to make Cold Steel more enjoyable overall, you'll recognize more characters, understand more references and events, and they're all great games. Just sticking to Cold Steel is fine, but you are missing out a lot by ignoring the ones that came before it.

    • @jclosed2516
      @jclosed2516 4 года назад

@@Palidor I can agree with that, and I myself have certainly gained a lot by playing those older games first, before diving in the Cold Steel series. But not everybody want to play games that (in their eyes) have outdated graphics. Sure - You and I (and a huge lot of people too), do not care too much about games that are a bit older, as long as the story and game play is good enough to get the player hooked. Unfortunately not everybody has the same mind set, and for those people I gave my advise to at least see a summary (or maybe an LP) of what happened in the Liberl and Crosbell arcs.
However - Not everybody wants to make that investment, and for those starting with first game in the Trails of Cold Steel (Erebonian) series is the minimum to have at least a reasonable idea what is going on. It will not give the full experience, but at least it's enough to enjoy it.

I think Fire Emblem: Three Houses did the better job though. I don't mean slow burns if I know that I can expect good payoff. My main problem with many second row jRPG's is that they basically expect you to believe that there would be good pay off, not providing sufficient incentive, so until you actually are hardcore jRPG player you commonly feel that you wasting your time (and commonly it is also true).

I love all the LoH games, but this is probably my favorite arc, mainly because the characters are so well done. My only complaint with these, and the other trails games, is that multiple playthroughs are a requirement to see and obtain everything. Sometimes finding a quest in these games is like finding a recruit in Suikoden. It's literally where you would never think to look, and so you probably don't. The sequels are better about marking things, but still can be frustrating.
I know it makes games too easy when there are waymarks for everything, but it's just bad to give players no clues as to what they can do.

I was put off from ever playing a legend of heroes game because every time I look into it fans say I need to play every game in the series in order. Fanbases can't grow like that. Some of the games don't have official western releases and all of these games are extremely long JRPGs. It is unreasonable to expect that kind of dedication from anyone except the most avid fans. I honestly don't understand this mentality at all. I do prefer people start with sky, but don't shun them from starting at Cold Steel 1 if they want to start with something 3d or relatively modern. But not even wanting to start at cs1?! There's no good reason why IMO. I see it as try CS1, and if you like it, grats, you now have a whole bunch of games to play over time that you know you will love., and if not, well, you didn't. I don't see the benefit of starting at cs3 over 1 unless you don't own a pc, nor a ps3, and only a ps4 (that would be kinda odd but possible I suppose).

I freaking love the soundtrack in this game, the music is battle themed when shit is going down, upbeat when exploring and even relaxing and soothing in the evening sections or when characters bond. I also love how when you're running around Trista, you will often run into various party members spending time with npcs there. Its pretty cool to see them not just being friends with the player. Laura and Monica for example, you will often see together in different places, wether Laura is teaching Monica to swim or they're simply on a cafe or out shopping together. It gives the illusion that the party members have lives as well.

I played most of rpg games but i didnt know about this game ? Damn, this is a very underated series imo, the story is just mindblowing, it got the hype of Suikoden series, my most fav game before! Now, this series has jumped up to number one of my fav.. Im in the middle of the ToCS 3 now, the story is just getting better and better, more twist, more connections between characters, more mysteries of course.. My suggestion is, dont think, dont make assumption, if you want and a jrpg fan, just tried it first, its slow at first yes because of the introductions and character development, but the pay off is just so worth it! I am on chapter 5 and I have enjoyed it 65% but it gets better storywise, so I may with confidence say it will be more than 65% when I am done with the game. But yeah, game gets better as you progress story, so if you just started the game and are running out of patience, all I can say is : HANG ON, it gets better!

Maybe people just have different tastes, or maybe I still haven't played enough.... but believe I've already put 40+ hours in. Then we go into Zero which is kinda FC like but a bit more engaging as it picks up several unfinished plot points from Sky. Azure is probably best game in the series. CS1 is more modern but have pacing and some storytelling problems. which drops it to FC level. CS2 - tbf probably worst game in the series due how it treats the story. If there is one thing new players need to take away from any review of especially the first game, it's that it is a VERY slow game...
Not slow as in boring, but rather that the combat of the game is secondary to the story, characters and worldbuilding, as the game builds on the Trails series as a whole, but also sets up the story for a series of 4 games of it's own... Think of it like an RPG where the main gameplay of the first game is the prologue to what other games usually do!
Playing this game feels like you play the 2 hours of other games right up to the point where your village gets burned down or a war breaks out, and the true game and story really starts! Even though you participate in events in the first game, it doesn't really feel like you are involved much until the final hour or so... The game doesn't really make class VII, and especially Rean, an important player until the very end of the game, and it really takes a long time for the series to make it FEEL like this is your fight...

2 had the civil war, with you caught in the middle. 3 had Reans government missions, and 4 put you front and center as the true hope of everyone in the Rivalries.
The first game felt like you only got a taste of what the story was to be about in the next three installments, and along with Class VII getting smarter and stronger, they also got more directly involved in world matters. Not as part of a school, but as a group of their own.

Let me first start off by saying trails Is one of my favorite series with CS2 being my favorite then CS4 of this arc the first game was really well written with the whole crow I think they ruined him in later games his batman like ideology would have been a great opposite given they walk different paths but my biggest problem was how his character was and what it could have become in terms of how good CS1 is it's okay it doesn't get good till the end by the time the plot thickens it ends but the victor fight was cool

I will buy to play on PS4, but i have the felling that this game is more enjoyable on PSVita, due the possibility of portability.
