Excellent review Matty, this is definitely still my goty as well. It was such a breath of fresh air on so many levels. Felt like a return to form in a way. Koguchi really nailed the atmosphere with his music contribution. You heard a few tracks of his in Reverie but he really shines in Daybreak. I'm currently playing Daybreak after having started the series in chronological order on a whim back in winter 2023 and I'm amazed that this series is so slept on. I don't think I've ever experienced anything like it when playing videogames. @@HDREconomist The main issue with Kuro 2 is its CH 3 with how the mind control tries to juggle both non-existent conflicts with existing conflicts resulting in a convoluted and annoying story. NIS/Falcom is an example of a company of not having a lot and using it well. They've really made their stride here in the States with the Trails series, they have my praise. Bandai Namco could learn a lot from them (really don't like this company right now).
Falcom is as old as square but unlike square the owners wanted to stay a manageable size for a core main team and not lose vision that's why even though it's been about 40 years since Falcom been founded it's the same company
Not only that, Falcom develops games for a single platform, all other ports are handled by other companies, at said companies expense with Falcom getting a small percentage kickback for licensing. From 2009 on, Falcom has been an exclusive Sony developer. All other ports were Done by other companies. Only the Japanese Kai ports are done by falcomthe switch ports for their more recent games are handled by NIS. The pc ports for the Cold Steel games, zero, azure, daybreak, nayuta, reverie ys celceta, 8, 9 Were all done by PH3. Another reason why a small studio like falcom is still able to succeed. They don't chase graphical superiority, and just visually pleasant. Also they're a self publishing developer in Japan, allowing them to keep most of the profits their games make
I am so thankful that I decided to get the Limited Edition of this game. They are completely sold out on PS4/PS5 and Switch. Trails is so money. Words are insufficient in describing how good this series is and how great Falcom is at world building. 3 more games to go before I feel safe playing Daybreak but it will be waiting for me and really happy you enjoy Trails so much Matty. Thanks for diving in. What a special game series this is.
We getting Trails and YS english releases the same year and the huge gap between japanese and english are finally getting over which is so nice to see.
I’m pretty new to Trails, and it’s definitely one of me favorite JRPG series of all time, and man! I’m so glad I spent the last half of 2023 bulldozing my way through the Sky, Crossbell, and Steel arcs(all in order back to back) for the first time, in prep for this game. And it was so worth it!
That live service comment hit hard as I watch this on the day Dawntrail comes out lmao. I’m gonna start my trails journey after I finish Dawntrail and SMTV. Thankfully there’s no other games I want this year until Metaphor
With Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Dragon Quest III HD2D, Shin Megami Tensei Vengeance, Ys X, Visions of Mana, Romancing Saga 2 Remake, Metaphor, Persona 3 Remake, Unicorn Overlord, Eiyuden Chronicles, Like a Dragon infinite Health, Fantasian Neo Dimension etc this is really a bold statement - as much as I love the Trails series..
Trails series is a master class in world building. complex, coherent, deeply intertwined over several decades long running. the script of this series could be called a manuscript by now, dang it how long and far ahead they're planning. currently I'm replaying CS1 and plan to goes all the way to lastest entry.
Honestly the thing Trails completely excels at is the way the magic and supernatural mixes with the political intrigue. I have never seen a series mix both elements so well and so expertly natural feeling. You can see quite clearly how supernatural stuff influences the politics of the world, but also how politics can just as easily bend the supernatural to its whims and use it as a political tool. Usually when magic and empires/nations mix its usually surface level "magic is outlawed or a tool for enslavement." But here, it's so well done and it has to do with how the magic can so easily switch from technology to supernatural, then easily blended together.
I started with the Cold Steel games, and loved them as well as Reverie, so was already excited for Daybreak, your review made me even more excited for this, lol, can't wait. Rean and Millium are my favorite characters, so I'm excited to see how Van is, he sounds amazing! Great review!
The issue with trails is that takes a long curve to play and investment (money and hours) its a game that its unique, and thats why its my favorite series of all time of JRPG. Rn Falcom is trying to do remakes of the old games to approach to the newer playerbase, like the remake of Azure series, and in the future they will try to remake o remade in the Sky series. I hope it brings more ppl to this magnificent JRPG Also, side note, if you want to enter to this series, and you are kinda afraid that you might not like it. Well, there is not a easy answer, but I usually recommend starting with the 2 first Cold Steel games, then if you like it, start with Sky saga. Its a game worth investing for JRPG fans.
found the legend of heroes games during the lockdown these games saved my sanity and daybreak was pretty good can’t wait to replay our localized version
As someone who played both games to completion with the eng patch (Sadly the Kuro 2 one is incomplete for NPC dialogue) I can safely say that Kuro is my favorite in the series by a mile, Kuro 2 is amazing in its own right but Kuro 1 is just... Pretty damn near perfect game in my eyes, awesome cast, awesome protagonist, awesome story, fun combat, ton of new interesting lore Ye, my top 3 is basically Kuro 1 > Big pause > CS4 > Azure And seeing all the hype stuff Kai trailers have already shown? We are in for a treat once that is out, my prediction is that it will essentially be what Reverie was for Crosbell & Cold Steel and I can't wait personally, hoping there will be eng patch next year for it cause hooboy I CANNOT wait for god knows how long to play it officially
No PS5? Ff7 rebirth is my favourite JRPG since the literal glory days of JRPG's, most fun I've had since my OG playthrough of FF9. Couldn't recommend more strongly, I played Rebirth from the day it came out til about 2 weeks ago when I started prepping for Shadow of the Erdtree, well over 300 hours of playtime and I'm STILL. NOT. DONE. It just gives and gives and gives. So insanely cool.
As someone who played the jp ps5 version starting last year in the summer and fall time period, I love this game already and can also confirm everything Matty mentioned in this video. I already snagged an English copy online, and I highly recommend this game a lot, as it's easily the best entry in the series.
Played this on steam with the patch and man it's such a great game and a huge breath of fresh air! very excited for newcomers and long time fans to experience how excellent this game is.
I've just finished Chapter 3 and I'm loving every minute and every character. I've been playing Final Fantasy 7 rebirth before this and this game is SO much better! Van Arkride and Judith Lanster are my standouts so far.
Trails From Zero was my first Trails game, and I am now hooked: Trails Through Daybreak has been my most hyped game this year, and everything O have seen tells me my hype is justified🤩
Dude that comment about people rather play live service than actually playing Trails series is so true. Hell, Chinese gacha games like Honkai Star Rail, Genshin, and Arknights are brimmed with dialogue bloat/padding worse than Trails. And i say that as someone who plays all three. Also another thing with Live Service games they're able to continue the story with no end in sight whereas with Trails you can finish Sky, Crossbell or Erebonia just fine.
i think I'm somewhat opposed to starting with Zero specifically because i think one of the most emotionally resonant stories in the entire series concludes in zero and you are really missing out by not getting the full context of that story. i think every other arc is a fine starting point though.
I just notched every single steam achievement on Daybreak and finished a second playthrough. I rarely complete games, but I always complete trails games for a very simple reason: I just don't want to leave these worlds once I get into them, so I look for every excuse to stretch out my time in them a little bit longer.
Hopefully Daybreak sells well in the West. Apparently Zero and Azure sold pretty well so I have high hopes. I know I'll be buying it day one and I hope to see a bunch of new Trails fans
My issue with Trails Games is how long winded some of the dialogue is. I have a bit of a love/hate with it. There were some sections of Cold Steel I really liked and some sections that were a boring slog for me, so I don't know if this game would be better for me or not. I have always really enjoyed the combat though.
The Soundtrack like always is such a banger man i like every track i think for me the best one from all the Trails game .The Night track when Van is wandering through the city is so chill.
Played the game already 2 years ago with english fan patch. Story is nice but the gameplay is even better here. A mix of real time and turnbased fused perfectly. Am sitting on kuro 2 and the battle System is even better, maybe the best in jrpgs, if only second to Grandias.
I just finished Daybreak today and damn what a roller coaster, i always enjoy take the time doing the side quests and stroll the city i agree that the pacing is much better than reverie Can't wait for Daybreak 2!!
Thank you so much for making this video if it wasn’t for you I would have never even got into the trails series and now that im 73 hours in almost at the end of the game I can confidently say that it has been an incredible game as a new comer to the series and I can’t wait for daybreak 2 next year along with playing some of the older trails games I have missed out on not all of them because that would probably take a whole year of none stop playing to get through the series but maybe playing one more game in the series before daybreak 2 and then slowly chipping away at the series over the next few years.
Zero and Azure are some of my favourites game ever. They are super special for me given they first Trails I ever beat in japanese. It was an amazing tale and an amazing game which introdiced my two favourite characters of the whole series (Lloyd and Tio). Then, to play those in japanese was great idea, since now I'm enjoying Kuro 1&2 in japanese too, and loving them. Looking forward Kai no Kiseki too.
Surprise ya didnt mentioned the 2 chapter demo available right now for anyone that wants to try out the early game combat and also was very interested in the video but so hard not to look at any of the gameplay to avoid scenes
200-300 hours is def not enough time to play (and actually enjoy) all the previous games in the series. For me personally (although I like to take my time) it's been more like 1200 hours (counting first time playthroughs only ofc)
@@gamerelated8985 Tell me you’ve never played these games without telling me you’ve never played these games. Like seriously? Generic JRPG with edgelords? The protagonist of the first arc is literally the opposite of that LOL.
another game that has really good turn based combat is Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. it improved so much from the last game and is so fun and wacky lol
Daybreak 2 combat goes even better on the action combat with some additions and the ability to play for a longer time with some of the better characters
I started in trails of cold steel 2 I didn't know the series I only bought the game because I wanted something new and was cheap, then I got hooked and had to bought all of the games
Every Trails game has been getting snubbed at the Game Awards for the last few years, I hope the same doesn't happen with Daybreak. It baffles me they nominate expansions like Monster Hunter World Iceborne in RPG of the year for it's second year when deserving games like Trails are right there.
@@Deode-d4h It's a Game Awards show, it's not suppose to be a popularity contest. Some bullcrap happened in the best fighting game category too because of popularity, there was no reason King of Fighters XV should have lost best fighting game to Multiversus a game that was in beta and just now officially released this year. By the way they do spend hundreds of hours in these western RPG's and Monster Hunter and FFXIV two games that show up multiple years due to expansions.
@@ChrisMS0815 Look, I love Trails as much as the next fan, but the reality is that decently good and also popular games will be chosen over truly great games but are relatively niche. There's also the fact the Game Awards are biased towards western/western aesthetic games. I personally have never cared about the Game Awards because it is partially a popularity contest.
There are 2 complaints I had with daybreak: - I thought it was pretty easy, even on nightmare. - I found Van and Risette doing the whole "ah, now I see what's going on" a few too many times for my liking during chapters 3 and 4. Like they were some intellectual mcguffins
One more: if you've taken your time to set up your characters properly, the last character you get is kinda useless, especially since character acquisitions are so spread out. You get so little time with the last couple characters.
11:57 my thoughts exactly, I played Daybreak with the english patch as soon as it was released, so I went fully blind, so imagine my surprise seeing how Falcom handled deaths in this game compared to the garbage choices they had in Cold steel/Reverie. There may be some issues with the villains writing (motivations and such), but goddamit if it wasn't a breath of fresh air to see villains in Trails actually ACT like villains.
UGHHHHH I wanna watch this now, but I want to go into it as blind as possible next week. I will have to come back and watch later, but you can have my like now.
I'm a longtime Trails fan and I want a gameplay like Daybreak from now on, the combat is addictive and thank you for removing the battle scope, I skipped trails from reverie because I got burned out with the gameplay, I only watched the main plot. They need to optimize the PS5 version because the framerate runs like shit
There seems to only be a PS4 demo. Is there a PS5 demo or full game to purchase yet? Looks really interesting and this video was timely because I spent quite a bit of time researching new turn based Japanese RPGs to play. Great video. Would love to know
Demo looks like it is on Switch and PS4. No ps5 or PC demo though the game will on PC and PS5 too. I don't know how the ps5 works but cant you just install the ps4 demo or does it not work like that?
In Sky there is romance and it’s quite integral to the plot. In the crossbell arc this isn’t any romance if I remember correctly and in the cold steel arc this is a persona esque romance system. Daybreak does not have any romance whatsoever.
I'm going to buy this game in a couple weeks or maybe a month. I really want to play it right now but in the last four and a half months I just beat Trails of Cold Steel I-IV and I finished Trails Into Reverie Early this morning at 2:00. I absolutely love the games but after playing nothing but Trails games for the last four and a half months I'm kind of burned out on the games right now. I'm hoping that Daybreak is a shorter game like Reverie was because it took me around 3 weeks on average to beat each Trails game that I played except Reverie that only took one week. Normally I love hundred hour RPGs but after playing four hundred hour RPGs back to back I was so happy that Reverie was about half as long as the other ones.
I love the pacing of this one so far! It's much better, quick but to the point where you can understand what is going on. I didn't even follow much news about this game, but it was a good choice!

@@HDREconomist The main issue with Kuro 2 is its CH 3 with how the mind control tries to juggle both non-existent conflicts with existing conflicts resulting in a convoluted and annoying story. The erebonia curse would have worked better given want the story seems to have been going for in regards to the theme of "sin"
LETS GOOOOOOOOO! This game is so good!
My goat Wecon!!!!
THE GOAT IS HERE?!
I got into trails because of you. Thanks so much man 🙂↕️
Same here. Matty preaching the gospel and introducing me to a top 3 series of all time imo 🙏
Honestly I like van a lot as a lead. He’s laid back but can get serious.
Agreed
The pc ports for
the Cold Steel games, zero, azure, daybreak, nayuta, reverie
ys celceta, 8, 9
Were all done by PH3.
Another reason why a small studio like falcom is still able to succeed. They don't chase graphical superiority, and just visually pleasant.
Also they're a self publishing developer in Japan, allowing them to keep most of the profits their games make
@@RaifSeverencewasn’t Falcom mostly PC?
This whole series is truly special. More people need to experience them.
When Matty said, "Bouncing between Trails and Ys," I felt that. 7:48
Matty did this on purpose to annoy all the rebirth fans and boost engagement. Smart man.
It worked, sort by newest lol
I played all trails games! Can't wait to travel to Calvard!!
I hope it brings more ppl to this magnificent JRPG
Also, side note, if you want to enter to this series, and you are kinda afraid that you might not like it.
Pretty damn near perfect game in my eyes, awesome cast, awesome protagonist, awesome story, fun combat, ton of new interesting lore
Ye, my top 3 is basically Kuro 1 > Big pause > CS4 > Azure
And seeing all the hype stuff Kai trailers have already shown? We are in for a treat once that is out, my prediction is that it will essentially be what Reverie was for Crosbell & Cold Steel and I can't wait personally, hoping there will be eng patch next year for it cause hooboy I CANNOT wait for god knows how long to play it officially
This would be my 2nd most anticipated JRPG of 2024 with Visions of Mana being numeral uno.
I played zero, azure, and reverie and loved them all, just played the demo for this….and I’m getting it day one
LEGEND OF LEGAIA showed us the future of JRPG combat 25+ years ago and the industry blinked and missed it.
This is one of the most underrated games I've ever seen
As someone who played the jp ps5 version starting last year in the summer and fall time period, I love this game already and can also confirm everything Matty mentioned in this video. I already snagged an English copy online, and I highly recommend this game a lot, as it's easily the best entry in the series.
Start with Sky its the only RIGHT way...
Trails to me is the greatest JRPG series of all time
Played this on steam with the patch and man it's such a great game and a huge breath of fresh air! very excited for newcomers and long time fans to experience how excellent this game is.
I've just finished Chapter 3 and I'm loving every minute and every character. I've been playing Final Fantasy 7 rebirth before this and this game is SO much better! Van Arkride and Judith Lanster are my standouts so far.
Man I was not expecting to like Van so much!!!
the music overall is still pretty lacking compared to the older series, but koguchi and jindo definitely hit some high highs throughout
This is the lowest it gets, the new artists hired for music bounce it back to great in Daybreak II and for what it seems Kai no Kiseki too.
I fucking love trails peak storytelling
Peak fiction.
just play the game, if you don't get references it is not the end of the world, you just don't get those extra aha moment that's all.
i think I'm somewhat opposed to starting with Zero specifically because i think one of the most emotionally resonant stories in the entire series concludes in zero and you are really missing out by not getting the full context of that story. i think every other arc is a fine starting point though.
I just notched every single steam achievement on Daybreak and finished a second playthrough. I rarely complete games, but I always complete trails games for a very simple reason: I just don't want to leave these worlds once I get into them, so I look for every excuse to stretch out my time in them a little bit longer.
Okay, Matty. I'll jump in on this one! Thanks for the review!
I really want Sky ports or remasters to understand it better before going through this series
So glad to see this series getting love, good job Matty
I’m at the end of chapter 3 I think. For the record, I liked all the cold steel games and I think the last one was probably my favorite
It's because of this damn channel that I lost 9 months of my life to the Trails Series and I REGRET NOTHING!!!
It’s great design but it’s not the first evolution, ff7r did the evolution way before.
I just finished Daybreak today and damn what a roller coaster, i always enjoy take the time doing the side quests and stroll the city i agree that the pacing is much better than reverie
Can't wait for Daybreak 2!!
TRAILS Through Daybreak DEMO on PS5 got me hooked. Pre-purchase and I havnt done that for years. ALSO picking up Metphor soon as im done TTD
Is there a ps5 version? I can only see the PS4 version.
I love this series. and enjoyed playing Reverie.
So I cant wait for the game to release next week.
Got a taste of it with the Demo.....Great!!
🤗
Thank you so much for making this video if it wasn’t for you I would have never even got into the trails series and now that im 73 hours in almost at the end of the game I can confidently say that it has been an incredible game as a new comer to the series and I can’t wait for daybreak 2 next year along with playing some of the older trails games I have missed out on not all of them because that would probably take a whole year of none stop playing to get through the series but maybe playing one more game in the series before daybreak 2 and then slowly chipping away at the series over the next few years.
Maybe after i platinum rebirth. Sorry nothing can top that game for me this year
Based on the web commercials released for Kai No Kiseki, it's only going to get even more crazy (shoutout to Kevin!)
Also if anyone in the comments has any advice it would be much appreciated.
I like jrpgs but haven't touched a trails game. You've made me impulse buy this one. It better live up to your hype lol
It doesn't lol it's a generic anime jrpg with a bunch of teenage edges lords...
@@gamerelated8985 Tell me you’ve never played these games without telling me you’ve never played these games. Like seriously? Generic JRPG with edgelords? The protagonist of the first arc is literally the opposite of that LOL.
LoH trails is the absolute best Jrpg serie
its the one piece of the J rpgs
another game that has really good turn based combat is Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. it improved so much from the last game and is so fun and wacky lol
I love when you drop a Trails video! Really great review!
You sold me pre ordered on ps5. Thanks for the very informative video
Daybreak 2 combat goes even better on the action combat with some additions and the ability to play for a longer time with some of the better characters
Ray Donovan also comes to mind with Arkride Solutions.
I started in trails of cold steel 2 I didn't know the series I only bought the game because I wanted something new and was cheap, then I got hooked and had to bought all of the games
What's your fave line in all the trails series?
Estelle Bright: Time for U-L-T-R-A V-I-O-L-E-N-C-E
Finding out Daybreak is pulling an SMT makes me waaaaay more interested
Imagine if falcom had a large budget
Saying these games are graphically stunning is diabolical
I'm more of an FF14 and Daybreak kind of guy. So the rest of summer is going to be extremely fun for me.
Started my journey in January and I'm up to cold steel 2. Hoping i get to this by the end of the year. Soo many good games coming though.
Every Trails game has been getting snubbed at the Game Awards for the last few years, I hope the same doesn't happen with Daybreak. It baffles me they nominate expansions like Monster Hunter World Iceborne in RPG of the year for it's second year when deserving games like Trails are right there.
I mean, unfortunately Trails as a series is just super niche. Not many people are willing to invest into a multi-hundred hour long JRPG story.
Rean would be my 2nd favorite protagonist with Van Arkride pretty much numeral uno.
Can't wait for the English localization to unlock on Steam!
There are 2 complaints I had with daybreak:
- I thought it was pretty easy, even on nightmare.
Zero really was an incredible game
The third time : best jrpg year ever
Just started Cold Steel....it got me
11:57 my thoughts exactly, I played Daybreak with the english patch as soon as it was released, so I went fully blind, so imagine my surprise seeing how Falcom handled deaths in this game compared to the garbage choices they had in Cold steel/Reverie. There may be some issues with the villains writing (motivations and such), but goddamit if it wasn't a breath of fresh air to see villains in Trails actually ACT like villains.
I'm so excited for this to come out
Been grinding through crosbell arc to be caught up for it
Just bought it. I'm taking your word
UGHHHHH I wanna watch this now, but I want to go into it as blind as possible next week. I will have to come back and watch later, but you can have my like now.
Can't wait! But, why isn't this review on the main channel? It isn't a "retro game". Not knocking you, man. Just confused by this decision
Probably won't get enough views to justify putting it on the main channel. A single bad video can really mess up your place in the algorithm.
As with all things on RUclips the algorithm dictates all. Pathetic.
Wish they ported the earlier games to the Switch. I don't have time to play it at home, but on the go would be much easier.
Any romance in Trails? I'm a grown ass man and I need some romance in my JRPGs
Then get a life...
@@gamerelated8985L
In Sky there is romance and it’s quite integral to the plot.
In the crossbell arc this isn’t any romance if I remember correctly and in the cold steel arc this is a persona esque romance system.
Daybreak does not have any romance whatsoever.
Yea the Main character in this has a live interest
Yes the main character in this one has a love interest
18:10 challenge accepted 😅
Thank you Matty! I've been waiting for this video
Trails is so slept on it’s crazy. This game going to be so good I put 13hrs on the demo😅….this series is easily one of the best stories in gaming
? ? How is this game under 7 years old, and already retro?
Is that persona music in the background? It’s so beautiful it touches my heart
I love the pacing of this one so far! It's much better, quick but to the point where you can understand what is going on. I didn't even follow much news about this game, but it was a good choice!
