So I played TRAILS FROM ZERO For The First Time...

  • My Trails journey throughout 2022 has been nothing short of fantastic, but Trails From Zero is on another level. A grounded JRPG drowning in political figures and gangs scheming throughout the dark underbelly of Crossbell City. The difference maker is that Zero is now available to everyone despite being the fourth entry in the series. While a good starting point in some respects, my time spent in the Sky trilogy absolutely paid off here.

Even if Kea is kind of just relegated to a cheerleader a lot of the time, I will always love and respect Lloyd for the moment when he finds her trapped in a box, doesn't understand what's going on and is like "this kid is in major danger and needs my help. As much as I love the Sky Trilogy, the Crossbell games just hit different. The storytelling is fantastic and the character moments hit so hard. Plus I don't think I've ever grown to love a fictional city much like Crossbell, which also helped me love a certain character from Cold Steel 3 that much more. She embodied my feelings perfectly lmao.

Trails from Zero is awesome. I played through the fan translation a few years back. Really excited to play it through again when it officially releases. Btw for those with multiple platforms such as PS4 and Switch make sure to buy Trails from Zero on Switch the PS4 version has worse graphics and is missing features compared to Switch version. PC version is great too. Hopefully with Trails to Azure the PS4 version is updated with same features as other versions of the game. Whatever version you play of the game though it's still a great RPG! I agree with Retro Rebound this game does a great job of doing world building while keeping the plot moving and stuff happening.

while it's kinda sad that the most impactful moment in Zero doesn't even focus on the Zero characters, I still love the game for giving such a heartfelt redemption to the character that needed it the most.
Seeing where Renne has come from, the stuff she had to do, the people she surrounded herself with to getting the loving family she always wanted is genuinely heartwarming. Because at the end of the day she's just a lost, confused child that wants people to love her like anyone else would. It's probably the first time I've teared up to fiction in a REALLY long time.

    In terms of Combo Crafts:
Technically, the beginning of that system was created in Sky SC, but they weren’t that special because they were generic combos that were similar no matter who used them. And I think that’s key to why they haven’t come back. Since Crossbell focuses on a much smaller team of heroes, it’s much easier to design unique combo attacks for the pairs. But if they were to do unique combo attacks in CS, for instance… just for Class 7 alone, even just the *starting* members of class 7, you’d have to design 36 unique combo attacks for them. Yeah, it just isn’t feasible. That’s part of why the link system exists in CS. They’re just generic combo attacks. It’s just a more involved version of the SC system, in a sense.

    • @ninototo1
      @ninototo1 2 года назад +1

They could easily have gone the Suikoden way where characters with a special relationship get a combo craft. Off the top of my head from CS1: Laura and Fie, Machias and Jusis. This is really not a good reason.

    • @ninototo1
      @ninototo1 2 года назад +1

@@kentstopme No because combo crafts aren't a must at all. They're mainly just cool cause they show the teamwork of 2 persons. For example it was an absolute waste to combo with Tio for me cause her arts were more powerful. Also you only get a combo if you build your team around including both members, so it's an investment, especially if those team members aren't as good as some others that lack a combo.

@@ninototo1 the reason Unite attacks work in Suikoden is because the cast is so exceptionally large that they don’t care at all about balancing all of the characters. Unite Attacks inherently make certain characters more valuable, especially if they pair with another strong unit.
Even though Class 7 is a large group, there aren’t so many that they want clear and obvious favorites. If Fie and Laura, already two of the best party members, had a unique team attack together, it would be harder to justify not taking both of them at all possible times, since you’re just objectively making them worse by pairing them with anyone else. Having only certain pairs get unique combos removes flexibility of party composition unless you’re fine just being weaker than you could be. In addition, some characters would struggle to justify having special pairs with each other, since many Class 7 characters don’t have strong relationships with other members of the group in CS1.
I imagine every character would probably have a pair attack with Rean, otherwise it would greatly overvalue the few characters that did. If we remove Rean from the equation and just focus on the other members, Alisa doesn’t really have any obvious links. Elliot and Gaius would technically work, since they are the first characters that are just chill and hang with Rean, but they don’t really have a super well-defined and interesting relationship with each other, and I don’t think are close enough with anyone else to justify a combo attack. Obviously Fie and Laura would be a given, and Machias and Jusis (as much as they would disagree). Emma, especially in CS1, would really only sorta have Machias, in regards to his one-sided competition with her in grades, but that would then give Machias 2 link attacks, objectively unbalancing him in comparison to the others. If we add in Crow and Millium, Crow wouldn’t have anyone except Rean, and Millium could have Jusis, but that only inflates Jusis’ numbers too, still leaving Emma and Alisa left to try and pair with each other, even though they have no special relationship.
I like the idea of making the special pairs have unique benefits, but CS1’s cast pretty infamously revolves almost entirely around Rean, so I just don’t think it would work there.

The scene where Renne hides in the closet and hears her parents speak the truth really hit me hard.
When I completed Star Door 15 in Sky 3rd, I had the assumption that Renne's parents are terrible people. Renne truly is very unfortunate to have parents like that (on top of the Paradise tragedy).
But, in Zero, when I hear them speak the truth about how they actually lost Renne, a big wave of relief washed over me. It turns out Renne's parents are actually good people, and she was truly loved. This is one of the very few good things that happen to her.
Renne, who is hiding in the closet, also gets to hear the truth. She might already know it and choose to ignore it, but now hearing those words directly from her parents makes it impossible for her to run away from it anymore. I also feel very relieved and happy for Renne.
Then Renne comes out of the closet, in tears. Saying that one of the reason she came to Crossbell is now gone (probably to get rid of her parents). This scene made my eyes tear up too, there are so many emotions here. There's happiness because Renne learns that her parents didn't abandon her so she don't have to take revenge on them, and sadness because Renne knows she can't easily return to her parents even if she wants to due to her current position. And also, her crying face and voice is just too heartbreaking for me.
Whoever directed this scene deserves all my respect. They had to think of a way for Renne to learn the truth, but if Joshua/Estelle, or the SSS told her, it wouldn't be as impactful as hearing it directly from her parents. Hence, the "hides in closet" scene. Beautifully directed, hands down.
Sorry for my very long and probably grammatically awkward wall of text. The scene made a huge impact on me, so I couldn't resist sharing my thoughts on it!
    Also, thanks for the video!

Geofront (which I'm a part of) was not involved with the development of either the PC or Switch versions you're receiving right now.
The PS4 version was outsourced by Falcom themselves to Studio ArtDink back in 2020. It uses Vita textures, actually, and not PSP. We're getting that basic port for PS4.

Dude makes ingestible that can make people demons? Oh no, he plunges the state into chaos and gives it's suzeraints pretext to station their forces within the autonomous state's borders!
Man uses the infinite power of a veritable God to further his aims? Oh no, he plans to use it to improve the political situation of the state and continent but in doing so puts the state under an oppressive regime!

If am correct the original Trails from Zero was only released for the PSP and PC hence why the PS4 version didnt get the same treatment.
tbh i started the trails series with Cold Steel, there were alot of things that flew over my head because there were mentions of the past events. Since CS2 hasn't been localized yet at that time i had the time to visit Sky and then Zero and Azure with the Geofront patch mods and honestly absolutely no regret at all. The experience with the story and characters *muah* French kiss.
The Pros of this new Zero, voiced dialogues, Turbo mode and FPS setting. Con and the biggest one for me, no auto dialogue advance.

Even though I played the crap out of Zero and Azure a couple years ago, I will be purchasing the official releases to support the series and hopefully the localization of other neglected JRPGs that never got a chance in the West. I played them before the Geofront had finished their translation so I'm sure there's a ton I missed out on since the version I played was rough to say the least, with many spelling and grammatical errors. I wish Falcom and XSeed had been able to maintain their relationship because the job they did on the "Sky" trilogy was unbelievable. Estelle Bright is so well characterized in those games compared with later entries done by NIS and even what I've seen from the Geofront's Crossbell project.

I really liked the twist at the end dungeon you mention and azure is arguably one of my all time fav/best games ever. I used probably 60 ish hrs on this. Doing the rounds, talking to everyone , doing every side quest almost. I felt like you said a detective, it has one of my favourte setings and the city is great. This is arguably my favourite series ever. This one of the few if not the only series were i could list almost 10 great or more moment on each game. After going to the hospital alot in this game i almost got teary. Azure is one of only 3 games that has managed to get a tear out of my eye. I really like the games story, characters, music. The main theme, the hospital theme and more. I really hope this series manages to ignore some of the biggest tropes by the end of it tough. PS: Gg review or analyze:)

The Trails in the sky Trilogy needs to be remastered for modern platforms. It is mindblowing that it has not happened. This whole ''where to start'' thing would be less of a problem if the sky trilogy was available on switch and PS with some QOL improvements. Yes i know it is available on PC but it could honestly use some QOL improvements. At least similar to the improvements that the crossbell duology got for the switch.
So mindblowing that only the switch and PC versions of Zero and Azure got the improvements.

My time with Trails has been…interesting and I’m honestly curious if anyone else has been the same.
I haven’t played the Sky games as I started with Cold Steel 1 back in 2017 on PS3 before the game even had a ps4 or pc release.
Cold Steel hooked me and I immediately bought and played the 2nd cold steel game on PS3. This just kinda spiraled until I ended up getting into the Zero and Azure fan translations which I REALLY enjoyed both of these on the PSP. Shout out to the fan translators who helped make this current zero port happen.
This all ended up with me sincerely dropping the series for a while and now I skipped everything and went straight to the Calvard games LOL.
I know it’s not the best way to play them, but sometimes some of the games just don’t hook me.

I think the real reason why combo crafts arent in other arcs is simply because it would be too hard to make combo crafts for EVERYONE. Just too many party members.
Note how the maximum amount of party members you ever get in Crossbell is 8. And 2 of them you only really have fully playable in the very last chapter of the very last game. Hell, Rixia and Dudley barely had any combo crafts compared to Noel and Wazy and ESPECIALLY the main four.
Anyways, thats way less than most Trails games. Sky had 17 members at its peak (3rd). That's more than double, and considering the nature of combo crafts it would up the workload exponentially. Cold Steel is even worse, with a whopping 39 at it's peak and Hajimari at FIFTY FUCKING SEVEN (57).
The only Trails games with comparable casts are Kuro no Kiseki, which I believe has 10 in Kuro II. Which is still more than the Crossbell Arc, if only a little. Not to mention the animation and programming workload would also increase as a result of the new combat system, game engine and models.

I still have to start with Trails FC...no way I'm not playing them in order...How much better are they on PC vs the Vita version of FC and SC? I'd rather play handheld, because my PC is kind of crap right now. I will be picking this game up on the 27th, but honestly probably won't get around to playing it until sometime in 2023. I need to take breaks into between RPGs otherwise I get burnt out and hit a wall and it's not fair to the next game.
If I can finish Trails FC & maybe SC this year, I can start next year with 3rd, and then Zero. That will shorten the wait for Azure and the other two games as well.
This is such an exciting time to get into the series. My only experience is with Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion on PSP which is one of my favorite games of all time and these are supposed to be 10x better than those.

The PC versions have turbo mode which really improves the experience when going back and forth through places and in fights, cause battle animations are slow and can become a bit of a drag after too many fights.
