With the release of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, it's time to start cleaning up the backlog of Mario classics that I missed. To celebrate the movie's release, we gather today to discuss an unlikely Game Boy Advance RPG known as Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. After messing with it in Switch Online, I just knew I had to play this game. Between the GBA version and 3DS remake, I adored my time with it.

I fucking love this game and one of the biggest reasons for me its because it uses a completely different story other then bowser steals the princess. New characters in this are absolutely a blast
I remember when getting a new game felt like an *event.* And the manuals played into the magic of it all. Opening up a full-color manual and seeing the story synopsis, the character art, the character bios, etc. ... It felt like getting a new book AND a new game all in one! Flipping through the manual acted as a sort of primer; the preliminary event before the main event of the game began...
But nowadays, that magic is gone-- especially so with digital only games.
That's a you problem man. I still get excited whenever a game comes out that I've been looking forward to.
Manuals were nice but by no means has their absence made gaming somehow worse. At most you look at it for 3 minutes and then... well, play the game.
One of the best non-traditional Mario games I've played. A certified GBA classic!

Timeless classic. I remember being up super late when I was a kid playing this game all night. Other than TTYD this is the best spin-off Mario game imo

I like how you can actually dodge and counter in M&L instead of just hoping you can tank the hit like in Pokémon
I also love the bros attacks, wish there was something like that in Pokémon where if you time the button press you can do a special move
Mario and Luigi is more skill

Both are great games

I've played this (the GBA version) and Bowser's Inside Story and they're great games. It's sad that the studio went bankrupt. I'm more familiar with the Paper Mario games. I've replayed the first two many games and I think Super Paper Mario on Wii is also worth playing.
You should play Mario and Luigi partners in time too, it's a DS game so it's not gba anymore but it's really good.

Yoko Shimomura is the composer for every game in the Mario and Luigi series, that is why it sounds so Kingdom Heartsy as you said. Especially, the final boss theme of Bowser’s Inside Story.

I really loved this game growing up. I found it challenging and had issues progressing the game sometimes but it was so much fun..Wonderful game.
Has Mattt ever covered Mario RPG? Cause if he hasn't, he should give it a look, that game was a classic and I love(d) it. I'm sad they never did anything else with it or the characters they introduced in that game such as Mallow or Geno.
Isn't it crazy how they never did a proper sequel to SMRPG? Everyone loved it, everyone loved the new characters, yet they just tossed it into the closet for over 20 years

I prefer the original over remake. I liked the combat difficulty in the original but I also like the quality of life in the remake.

No not in the slightest
No, it's completely understandable.
Battles feel more directly involved in that way, and it's pretty well handled.
i tried playing earthbound and pokémon but idk its so boring just pressing buttons and just hoping your attack does well is so boring to me. being able to control how good your attacks are to turn the battle in your favor is so much more engaging than pure luck.
for the bonus roll, just go for a different stat every level and it will naturally give you higher stats almost all the time. if you just do one, your chance for a low roll increases.
that said, i think just getting attack was overall still the better option for speedrunning. but anyone else, just go through each stat and then do it again
Bro I was just looking at buying bowsers inside story and partners in time for my 2ds xl. My dumbass sold them in 7th grade at a garage sale for petty cash.
These Mario & Luigi rpg’s are so underrated.
Also a question for you Matty, do you know of any modern games like these? I’ve been on the look out for a bit but have never seen a successor.
I think the newest Paper Mario is maybe the closest we've got, but I've not played that series either!

There's a reason why the battle theme is memed to the moon and back.
As someone who has been playing RPG for his entire life, I think punishing the player for attempting to flee a fight is completely normal. In most RPGs you can’t just flee from a battle, it comes with a price. This price can be literally money like in this game, or it can be a probability of the flee failing, and resulting in a free turn for the enemies. It’s completely normal. Players are supposed to fight and get some experience, thus fleeing is discouraged and should be used as a last resort.
What me bothered the most is like the ''eerie'' stuff as a child. You have that creepy tree that is now drastically changed to more kid friendly and on the last boss when the music suddenly stops and when you meet and talk with bowletta, the music speeds up to let you know that this would be a tough one and you probably gonna die and that made me very nervous. and they removed that. But those little things, even though it is very smal, makes a good game and that makes it very rememberable
My favorite of the entire Mario rpg franchise.
It’s so underrated compared to the others and it’s the only one that had the BeanBean Kingdom which has been my favorite alternate kingdom added in any game..I wish they’d make a new game set in the BeanBean Kingdom
That final boss tho 😭 still 10/10, would play again… but not on the 3DS
The original pixelated version of the GBA is a better art direction over it's 3DS remake.
Idk why so many people share that sentiment, to be honest. I am an absolute lover of pixel art, and Superstar Saga still looks absolutely gorgeous and charming.
But I think the remake is one of the most beautiful looking 2D game ever made. Everything, from character design, the detailed backgrounds, the atmosphere and the lighting is phenomenal.
@@davion4777i agree so much man, the 3ds colors just pop so much more, the pixel art was cool but like, it looked so janky on some characters, like bowser. i did like the unique design they gave enemies like koopas though.
While the DS remake made the Shroom FORCE effect from the GBA game useless the game had OTHER badge effects that were so broken it only took like 3 Bros attacks to still kill the final boss itself on the DS remake of the game.

I got this game 3 days before I busted my ankle in 2005. This game made my hospital stay incredibly bearable. I will always remember this game fondly for that time of my life.

18:53 I like the Koopa Cruiser in both the original and remake versions of the game, but I can't get over how small it is compared to Bowser who is much bigger than his ship.
It's always nice to see a Mario game with a different story, and it's even better when Mario and Greenstach can put their rivalry aside to save the day.

I love the fact that AntDude can't stop verbally ripping Bowser's Minions to shreds for how disappointing it is, while you say it's fun and makes the 3DS remake a complete experience. Just shows how different our opinions can be.

The Game Boy Player may have been included in the instruction manual as Superstar Saga is one of the few games that supports rumble when played with the Gamecube controller.
Been playing through the 3DS remake and have definitely been enjoying it. Can recommend.

that Bowsers minion section looks like the ultimateclusterf*ck. i love the first two paper marios, but none of them since or the Mario/luigi saga is really all that appealing to me.
I never got to finish this game, but I do remember loving it a lot. Would hope they’d make more of this in the future though!
I got stuck on that puzzle mini game it took me forever, but I took months for a break and eventually got through. I remember getting to the final dungeon and something happened, but I never beat it. I want to go back and beat it and try the other M&L games.

I love this game in the gameboy advance. I beat it many times. Min maxed my characters. Did everything. One shotting bosses with a bros move felt like an achievement

Bowser's Inside Story is great and all, but this one is probably my favorite Mario & Luigi game, maybe even my favorite Mario RPG.
The creators of fire emblem made Paper Mario. I suggest you check out the Paper Mario series if you can.

one of my favorite games from my childhood
One of the reasons for all the Gameboy Player ads is probably because this is one of the few GBA games with Gameboy Player Enhanced functionality. When played on the Gameboy Player with a wired Gamecube Controller, it has Rumble!
This is my very first RPG game I've played and it was an good time. I definitely have alot of nostalgia on this game and it still holds up nicely. I do prefer the remake more due to the balanced of the gameplay & difficulty. Though I do prefer the originals sprite & music.

I was ammused that you mentioned how it's a lot of small numbers. I played both, but I still hold the GBA version in higher regard because of bros attacks being more damaging, and the remaking ironing out gba exploits.
Regarding the small numbers, did you use the mush badge during your playthroughs? The mush badge will increase your POW for every mushroom, super mushroom, ultra mushroom,(was there a max mushroom?) And even 1 up mushrooms. So if you bulk up on coins, and max out each mushroom storage, you end up just breaking the damage stat on each boss.
Oh and for everyone new to this game. Give a bro a red pepper in a boss fight, let that bro KO, and then use a 1 up mushroom. You'll be glad you did

The only thing I hate about superstar saga is a lack of post ending gameplay. Once you defeat the final boss, roll credits and you are forced to delete your save data to continue playing.
