So I played POKEMON HEARTGOLD For The First Time...

- As a Battle Network kid, there are MANY Pokemon games that I missed out on. Yes, even Generation 2. Today, I right that wrong by diving into Pokemon Heartgold for the first time; a remake of the classic in 2000 for Nintendo DS. Despite Pokemon's gameplay (slowly) evolving over many entries, was I able to enjoy this relic of the past? Quite a bit, actually.

A special shoutout to World Of Longplays! This video wouldn't have been possible without their gameplay contributions. I have pokémon Gold and Siver.
Pokemon Gold and Silver is so crucial to the franchise's success. It was the game to ensure that Pokemon isn't a fad and it's here to stay.
Platinum did that. This and B2W2 were just icing on the cake.
@@philipsparks6089 he’s talking about the original Gold and Silver
@@GimmeRatMeat yeah im dumb
And ironically it was intended to be the finale of the franchise but it had become so big at that point that they couldn't just stop there. I feel like this might be why it's the only game to have two regions since it was supposed to be a send off for the series. And unfortunately that's probably also why they won't ever do this again either.
i'd like to know ur source on where they said this was supposed to be the last game. because i have never heard that before @@wintersong2266
Heart Gold and Soul Silver are to date my favorite Pokémon games.
close battle, can't decide whether HGSS or Black2/White2
@@whatnamedoiuse1481 fan made games 10000x better
@@whatnamedoiuse1481 I never liked generation five. Black and White 2 are better than Black and White, but in general I think Unova is a really bad region.
@@Breegullbeak i replayed them very recently and it's honestly incredible how much gen 5 is better than HGSS. For once, the pacing of the gameplay and level progression is not all over the fucking place in gen 5. I get that unova is a really linear region, but linearity makes for a game that is enjoyable to play. I'm serious, for all the good that HGSS has, it makes me want to kill myself everytime I try to play it, leveling up your pokemon is SO PAINFULLY SLOW. Swear to fucking god there is not a single wild pokemon over level 20 to grind
@@Breegullbeak gen 5 is the best story in the game
This was the peak of the franchise. Almost any old player that has been playing since red and blue knows it.
Not really Platinum was way better than HGSS, all of Gen 5 was also better IMO
@@rodrigonascimento1800 any fan made game is 10000x better as well
I interpret this as you saying gen 2 was the peak in which case I agree
@@rodrigonascimento1800 L. Gen 4 was super fucking slow. Gen 5 was def on par but heart gold is the goat.
@@rodrigonascimento1800 Hgss just had more so yes it’s better, but platinum is nice to have though, they compliment eachother well if you have 2 DS to connect
Not only the best remakes, but in my opinion, the best Pokemon games ever released. Just the basic fact you get TWO regions in the game, for a total of 16 badges and everything that comes with the second region, pushes it to the top for me. So much content in this game.
Facts. 100% My favorites
Not to mention one of if not the best user interface of the core series. The UI took such a huge step back in Black and White, ESPECIALLY the item management.
Also Silver (the rival) has the best character-development out of any rival, besides N if you even consider N a rival at all (I don't).
Agreed gen 2 is my favorite gen although Kanto is a-bit abbreviated( some routes are shorter than before, some buildings are not enter able anymore. no kanto safari zone, no cerulean cave, no cinnabar island/seafoam island maze, no viridian forest, no mt moon, no pokemon tower etc, no og victory road) in Gold and Silver. it was awesome to go back and experience it again though.
@@greatnesstcb2411 But they're talking about the remake, which has Kanto to it's fullest.
@@greatnesstcb2411 Many of these things are actually in the gen 4 remakes...
I’ve played gold, silver, and crystal an unhealthy amount of times. You can imagine my joy when they were re released on the 3ds console and we got heart gold and soul silver. Gen 2 is still to this very day my fav generation
Best generation for sure
Gen 2 is best for sure! Just gets to be too much after that
@@triborn217 my bad I was referring to the original gold, silver, and crystal on the virtual console.
Good games except for the exp grind before big battles.
Same here. I love Gan 2 so much and the remakes are a close second to and just elevated my my love of the games.
I got this game for my 12th birthday when it first came out. It was one of the best birthday gifts I received. I remember bringing my Pokewalker to summer camp every day just so I can level up my Pokémon.
Love this story 🙏
BRUH SAME! my parents, in a rare move, went all-out and got me the 3ds xl and both games, frankly I think the best birthday present I ever got as a kid
@@wheresmymuffins the games would've been out for years at that point
@@TheGoldenBoot-cz1do less than one year, actually; I made a mistake, it was the DSiXl, not the 3dsXL
@@wheresmymuffins oh true, gen 4 was my first gen too, I put way too many hours into soul silver lol
I'm 35 years old now but back in middle school Pokemon Silver on my teal Game Boy color was my life, gen 2 was and still is my favorite gen of all the Pokemon games.
Gen 1 bc of the wacky design of pokemon lol
Soul Silver is my favourite game of all time, don't think it will ever be beaten. Biggest thing I love about Johto and Gen 2 is as you said, it was actually a sequel to Gen 1 and the only other time they've done that with mainline games was in Gen 5 with Black and White. (I'm talking ACTUAL sequels, the same game with a slightly altered story, Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, USUM do not count) It's also the only generation where you can transition between and visit two regions in the same game. It really made Johto and Kanto feel connected as one huge world. The director of these games wanted to put more content in them than what they actually gave us which was already absolute madness and insanely generous.
HGSS does have those amazing moments that you don't find in any other game. Like your first encounter with Entei/Raikou that can happen way too early by complete accident, making you want to hunt them down and add them to your team. Or finally beating Lance's Dragonite by a teeth just for him to send another one out... and he does it another time right after. And yeah, getting Kanto in the game completely out of the blue is mindblowing. Also, Blue being the final gym leader in Kanto, that caugh me by surprise, and it is to this day the only gym in the series not tied to any type (unless they did that in SwSh, didn't play those), it's just Blue getting his strongest team possible to bully whoever gets there.
And there's the forever unsolved mystery of why Red abandoned his post as the champion to go to Mt. Silver and what happens to him after you defeat him. I used to think he just jumped off the ledge, but that's not the case as he does appear again a couple of times in future games.
In the manga (pokemon adventures), Red goes to Mt. Silver in search of the magical healing hot springs. He's hoping it'll reverse the nerve damage he suffered after being frozen for 6 months
Clearly you never played a game past gen 5
@@jordancunningham6909the manga isnt canon
You played Heart Gold/Soul Silver for the very first time? Holy cow, Matty! They are considered the best in the whole series. I hope you enjoyed it as much as those of us did when they first came out!
Most consider gen 5 the best tbh
@@oak7741 lol no
@@oak7741 that's been a recent take, kinda depends on which one you played as a kid. Gotta remember a lotta people hated gen 5 on release
@@TheGoldenBoot-cz1doppl don’t hate BW2 anymore which are better HGSS
@@TheGoldenBoot-cz1doit's widely regarded as the best gen now, however it definitely competes with hgss and platinum for the spot. A lot of people hated gen 5 on release due to the simple fact you had to use unova only pokemon and it made a lot of people upset which as a kid you'd be upset not being able to use your normal old gyarados throughout the main story. That's what gave it a lot of hate and then people started to appreciate the non breaking Tms, the OST, the story especially, the animated sprites, the realization of it had 151 mons added so there was going to be doomed designs and started to appreciate the good designs more, the introduction of shaking grass for easy EXP grind off audinos, and all BW did was enhance everything and added even more. BW was in my opinion better than D/P and GSC, had way less flaws than those 2 did while they're enhanced version is far better just like BW2.
This one is probably my favorite Pokemon game. It has the best things from the 4th gen with the opennes and pokemon of the 2nd gen. Playing through this is one of the best memories of my late childhood / early teenage years.
I got Heartgold at launch and still have my complete in box version with pokewalker in excellent condition. I know its worth a lot but I can't get rid of it. It was such a fun return to Gen 2 which I loved as a kid.
Never get rid of those kinds of things! Money can’t replace the happiness that Pokémon brings ;)
not only did i have the game and walker i had the special edition 3dsxl for heart gold as well lol. that thing is worth a bunch of money now
I have SoulSilver! I am the same way, especially because it was the game I got with my DSI XL for my birthday 😂
the journey in pokemon is so amazing its the best part for me
Mets jersey, Pokémon, and you were a Battle network kid like me? You just won your self a subscriber sir.
I was old enough to enjoy first gen pokemon but just aged out of it after that.... and just today I drove about 6 hours round trip to pick up copies of blue and red.... nostalgia will make you do crazy things!
1:55 I love that you mentioned this. Pokemon Silver helped teach me English when I moved to Australia from Korea as a very young kid.
How?
Wow! That opening commercial at the beginning was something that I haven’t seen since it was on TV. Blast from the past.
Sorry but two things:
1. Rocket didn’t make the Gyra shiny-just forced it to evolve.
2. S.S. Aqua has nothing to do with Team Aqua. The ship was called this in the originals, way before Ruby/Sapphire.
I always fondly remember HG/SS beceause it was the first pokemon game I experienced where the pokemon would follow behind you, and seeing that as a kid on my ds was just the coolest thing. Combined with the garuanteed shiny gyrados is dope
Mine was the og red version and then in 2005 I got a Gameboy micro with fire red
im so glad i convinced my mom to keep the box to my heartgold when i was younger i didnt realize how much the CIB was going for 0.0
one of my favorite pokemon games!! Great recap fam
Appreciate your dedication to content, Matty! Congratulations on getting engaged, happy for you brotha! Pokemon Silver was my first Pokemon game, and it took over my whole childhood after that. Heart Gold and Soul Silver as a teenager was such a great nostalgic throwback.
Just thinking about my Soul Silver copy on my shelf and the fact it's worth over $200 is wild, but something I'll never get rid of. Gen 2 is special to me.
Appreciate the love. Thanks for writing in.
Congratulations on your engagement! My fiance and I got engaged just a few weeks ago as well! We both wish you all the happiness in the world. Thank you so much for what you do 😊
I’d forgotten how profound and mature a lot of the story beats are in Gen 2. They really don’t put a lot of focus on them in a casual play through. Like Matty mentioned, you kind of have to dig deeper to not pass them by. I can appreciate that.
My pokewalker got lost at some point while moving to Florida a few years back and damn watching this makes me want one again, probably one of the most nostalgic things of my childhood.
I faked sick from school on release day for these games and then walked to gamestop that afternoon to buy soul silver. I’ll never forget hiding the box so my mom wouldn’t realize I left the house. And it’s still my favorite Pokémon game
That’s a dope story 👌🏼 haha
Happy to know i have the full box set still
Please play Pokemon Black and White. There are other games that I have the most nostalgia for but I feel like Black and White is truly one of the best Pokemon games. All new Pokemon that forces you to play with the new creatures and helps it feel fresh. Also the best story. You could tell with that entry they truly tried to make a compelling story.
Plus that Ghetsis battle
the pokedex also tells Ash: "Farfetch'd makes a delicious meal, especially when cooked with leek"
I played this 12 years after it's initial release, as a near 30yo.... And I was amazed.... Easily the single greatest pokemon game I have played. Nothing else quite compares.
I miss my original save file and pokewalker so much
Gen 3 is my favourite Gen (both OG and OR and AS) but this is a close second. Gen 2 was so damn special to me because you were able to visit two regions and I loved the connection between the two. Also Pokemon following you was always so damn cool! Nostalgia also plays a huge role since I watched the anime back then as well. Another reason why I liked 1-4 Gens in particular more than everything after is because they were not based on a certain country (just the locations) =)
This is so nice! I still go back and replay Crystal, gold, and silver. Seeing and playing HeartGold and SoulSilver was so nice and I'm glad you got to experience it too! (And I'm super jealous you have it boxed! Omg. Hope your wound is healing after having to sell your kidney for it.)
This game has aged surprisingly well. The newer pokemon games have life of quality updates, but they are so easy.
I have to constantly fight over leveling to play the new ones. Making it so I can't fight certain wild Pokemon or having to take certain pokemon out of my team when they over leveled. Which takes some of the fun out of it. But leveling in the late game the leveling speed is good.
Battling red was just the coolest moment in all Pokemon games. So sick
I remember watching you back in the day when all you covered was Fallout, haha. Cool channel, homie.
Masterpiece of a game
I was cleaning out an old dresser at my Grandma’s the other day and I found a Pokémon Red cartridge in one of the drawers. It was my old one I had as a kid cuz I couldn’t afford the newer games and I loved it. I’m trying to get a Game Boy so I can play it again.
The amount of hype when this game came out was just something you had a too be apart of.
Seeing gen 2 come too life on the DS in 3D was so fulfilling.
Plus the amount of content they added plus all the events they have out at GameStop just made it the best Pokémon experience for me, it was truly larger than life.
This game will forever live in my heart and soul!
Pun intended.
You should have been there for the game boy silver/gold releases! Even crazier tbh
My mans Matty bustin out his best Mathew Lillard impression lol
I remember playing pokémon Gold in 2005 when I finally got a gba, without a doubt my favorite pokémon game, day/night cycle, two regions, fighting Red, the clone pokémon/item glitch 🤣 breeding pokémon, introducing steel and dark, this game is so amazing, I haven't gotten to play the DS remakes yet! 😔
Dragon Warrior Monsters has way better breeding
I’m currently playing this game right now and it’s absolutely one of my favorite game titles of all time period.
9:41 don’t forget about the fact that they include a Pokémon CEMETERY in EVERY game! like cmon I don’t want to see any of that. Lol
Heartgold and SoulSilver are the pinnacle of pokemon gaming. Those games are true gems.
10:15 I don't think they killed any Slowpoke, they chopped the tails off and Slowpoke can grow them back, so it was sustainable albeit still horrible and evil. And yes, for those of us who played Gen 2 at launch, this realization was often traumatic, since we were fairly young then.
I really want them to make a console game with the first 3 gen, you can move regions, and keep the travel features of the newer games
Whitney and her stupid miltank gave me the most hell as a kid lol
I heard about that, but I didn’t have much issue. That fighting Pokémon gym tho…
Heres my additions to the conversation;
If I recall correctly Slowpoke actually don't feel it and regrow their tails, which makes it the friendliest possible way to eat a Pokemon. lol
I have never again enjoyed Pokemon minigames as much as the Pokeathalon.
The legendary birds and Johot stand out as cool because there's what feels like actually realistic, down to Earth culture and lore surrounding it.
It's crucial to the product, but put in subtle ways.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I remember, Team Rocket only wanted to call back Giovanni with their radio shenanigans.
Level curve and grinding are brutal, but by the time you're through with it all you feel like you've really earned it.
Pokemon Heart Gold was actually my first game and why I am still into Pokemon, so, even without the gen 1 nostalgia, as a 9 year old especially finding out about Kanto, and beating Red understanding the implications, combined with everything else (THE POKEWALKER THO YOU MISSED OUT) I can confidently say they'll never make a more defining experience. It was a game that could've been extremely hollow, but they made it feel alive. Like you had a legitimate connection with the world you were acting in.
I've replayed it more times than I can count, and love it to tears.
Soul silver and heart gold are the goats
That commercial was so popular I just had the strongest bought of nostalgia, and like flew back in time. Jesus I watched a lot of TV as a kid.
Playing it rtn an god damn gen 2 is the hardest gen I swear, every Pokémon has some sort of bs move that makes ur Pokémon go to sleep, poisoned, burned, paralyzed, confused. I’ve been playing for 14 hours and it’s been somewhat Spain but I’m glad there’s a lot of content, too much to enjoy!
Great content my friend, you play Pokémon like I do. For the love of lore, and nerding out on stats and battling! I’m subbed 🤘
New to your channel. As a 28 year old, this does good to many of us going back to our fav childhood memories. New subscriber and hope you find great success my brother 💪🏾
The fact that they fit 2 regions, even with Kanto a little bit sparse on content is so out of this world. I heard Iwata had to come in and help them build compression technology for this to fit. Also shoutouts to the original gen 2 games, love the art style from 4 colour pallets on the Pokemon. Have you checked out the Ruins of Alph in more depth? There's a whole system and lore for that place and it's like 1 secret after the next!
Man I wish u got the event celebi it add more the story
I remember getting Soul Silver on release day in high school and I put like 75 hours in the first week and got in a fight with my dad about how he thought I was wasting all my time that week and blowing off college prep stuff 😂
The inclusion of all the legendaries of Gen 1 and Gen 2 was what won me over. You didnt get the birds or Mewtwo in Kanto in the original so it just made the part of me that is still 8 when I first played Pokemon Gold so happy.
So happy your playing Pokémon!!
Bro Mattie your timing of these videos to relevant news is awesome keep up the good work 👏
Pokewalker as a kid was sick. I had to walk my dog a few miles every day, always brought that with me
I’m sorry for you if you only played just now this masterpiece of a game. This game is an experience. Probably one of the best games ever made
My first midnight release I ever went to at my local mall, played it all day in the car on a family visit to Texas the next day
That sounds fun
I wish I could discover going back to Kanto for the first time again such a great twist
The moment I saw that you chose Chikorita I immediately subscribed!!! #TeamGrassStarter
Silver is still the best rival ever, I just love how his angst comes from a genuine point of view. His dad's a frikken mafia boss who has neglected his own son for the sake of his own ambitions.
Lovin your vids man
They actually picked the Pokémon that is strong against yours instead of the weak
Love these remake, gen 2 is my favorite of the series, it was one of the first times I remember really being invested in a game. So it was really nice to see it get touched up for the newest console at the time.
If you do the GS ball event, not only will you encounter Celebi but you will also go back in time (same time as when Team Rocket raids Goldenrod Radio) and fight Giovanni himself. So in one day, you've beaten Team Rocket twice
My man is wearing a Mets hoodie, i knew i liked you for some reason lol
I’ll never forget how this game made me feel as a kid. It was perfect and I spent a lot of my childhood with it
i remember bringing my pokewalker into elementary school lol. still have my heartgold complete in box right on my shelf
My favorite game of all time still remember in 2009 when I picked up my first copy no other Pokémon game will compare!
This game is so good that immwilling to spend 26 minutes out of my day to hear a random guy talk about it
FOR THE FIRST TIME?!
I envy you
Remember when youtube didn't have so many ads? It was around the time people weren't overpaying for what were already expensive pokemon games
Paused during slowpoke tail discussion about eating pokemon. In the anime, it was mentioned in Farfetch'd Pokedex entry that they had nearly been hunted to extinction for food
This may not have been your intention, but that was one of the funniest videos you've made. I enjoyed every bit of it.
The Kanto Moment 😭😭😭😭
Please do the rest of the Pokemon games you haven't played. it was amazing seeing you become a true sonic fan, that doesn't like chao but it's cool, it's cool
Matty, I hope you have an “I just opened my brand new game and had to replace the battery” kind of day
I stopped at G2, went to Dragon Warrior Monsters, then got into the whole Super Robot Wars games. I laughed when you talked about the brattiest gym leader, because given how I've gotten older and a little more impatient--it's like "yeah, knock it off and give me my damn badge. I don't have time for this."
HG/SS is probably my all time favorite game, I remember my first time discovering Red in that snowy mountain, I still even have the HG/SS pokedex/guide book
This was a well thought out explanation gg sir
Started with gen 2 and now currently replaying SS, the grind hell before Clair is real
Did you know that some of those trainers that you register the phone numbers off will let you know when rare Pokémon are swarming so that you have a better chance of catching them? Such as Marill and Dunsparce?
Omg you said Niagara Falls, I live there and walk the park all the time I also play Pokemon go there and I love HeartGold and souls silver. I also like my rival to be an asshole. Liked and subscribed man.
Playing this again but on Delta with a few shinys is such a fun experience
Heart Gold and Soul silver were the first game boxes I ever kept as a kid. I loved the designs so much that I kept them with my ds game cases
Thanks so much for the content and I’m happy you got to have such a positive experience with this game.
This is one of the few things I still own from an “older” time in Pokémon history. When HGSS was still new, I bought this bundle pack from Walmart that included not only the complete in box game and pokéwalker but also a Ho-Oh figurine and some accessories for the pokéwalker. A wrist strap and a silicone cover with Ho-Oh on the back and Heart Gold with the logo on the front). I don’t have the original box it all came bundled in anymore but I still have everything else and it’s the pride of my collection. Gen 2 and Pokémon Gold specifically mean a lot to me and were an important part of my childhood. To be able to replay it again like this in my early adulthood and even now just brings me infinite joy.
Funny I just started playing this yesterday.
It's like Matty can read my mind
Oh damn, Matty a Poké channel now? That's what's up.
Didn't realize how much Zack n Cody was plugged into alot of kid products back then
That run Pokemon had from emerald, to platinum, to HGSS to B2W2 was peak Pokemon. A good 9 year run with some good games sprinkled in like DP, and BW
I remember the day I got this game on release date. I pre ordered the game at Walmart because it came with a cool Lugia figure so my 10 year old self was so excited
I love this remake. I'm doing it after Platinum again. Great video
To me these remakes encapsulated what "Pokemon" meant to me.
I literally grew up on original Gold version. Never owned more than that one till I was a teenager and making my own money.
When I got HeartGold, which I believe was a year or two old by the time I got it, the child in me that adored the world of Pokemon was so damn satisfied. From the updated music and graphics, to the nostalgic feeling of running through a world I knew like the back of my hand, but looking more like it did in my head, but now on the actual screen.
Imo, HG/SS are the BEST mainline Pokemon games.
Imagine being 6 and beating the league for the second time and imagining all you're pokemon evolving. Yea I was that kid. Invited megas in my mind at 6
I had this game when I was about 18-19. I really hate myself for falling out of Pokémon a couple years later and losing my HeartGold and Black 1 and 2. Especially now that I’m about 30 and more into Pokémon than when I was a kid and Gen 1 and 2 were blowing up on the GBC.
Johto games so good. You even get to do Kanto in them. Some of the best games imo. I really like Black and White 1 and 2 as well even though a lot of people hate on those for some reason. Actually think they have a decent story for pokemon lol
One thing i loved about this game is none of the difficulty changed at all like whitney is still the hardest gym leader next to blue and red is still op no matter what
