Same, I think some people just came in with the intent of whining about the game. If Shadow didn't have guns, they'd say that it's no different from other Sonic games, but because he does people complain as if the game isn't rated T and released in the early 2000s.

I really love the idea of this story setup and I'll defend the 10 alternate routes stuff forever. The way I see it the message of the story is to let go of the past and move on, to not let the past or what others thought of you before define you. All 10 routes have Shadow desperately try to find out who he is, yet none of the answers really end up making him happy. Because the true ending is what matters - the ending where he moves on from his past, it doesn't matter to who he is now, and moves on. That in my opinion is also why hiding how Shadow survived is such a good idea: It shouldn't matter! The Shadow who died in SA2 is dead, and the Shadow we have now is his own person, no longer caring about his past.
Super Shadow, he got Nigh Invulnerability from it but you can clearly see he suffered lots of stuff from the fall hence NIGH, lost access to abilities like Chaos Control and his memory.

6:38 Omega when first encountering Shadow: _"Are you... the original?"_ There are several active Shadow Android units encountered throughout this level, so it's a fair question. Nice of Omega to ask if each/this mindless robo-duplicate of his alive friend is actually him just in case before ruthlessly annihilating all of them.
I don't know if this is just a game limitation, but the androids do look a bit noticeably different from Shadow himself. I'm curious if Omega noticed too, which is why he asked to verify.
@@EuroMIX2 From our meta perspective it very well may be a game limitation or more likely I think a deliberate choice due to the Androids' more limited and in some cases unique moveset not requiring all the work that went into true Shadow's model. Besides massively saving on resources that technically could've been used to some degree with enough work it's an excellent game design choice to more easily keep track of which of the several yous on screen is the one that should be responding to your inputs which is necessary both for fun and to prevent review bombing of "At several points there were 3 to 5 Shadows on Screen at the same time which was so confusing and cost me a lot of BS lives. 2/5 Stars." From an in-universe, canon perspective it's difficult to say. I'd argue that they aren't so low-poly in-canon both because in Sonic Heroes where they only appear in the pre-rendered cutscenes they aren't, or more accurately are actual copy-pastes of pre-rendered Shadow in the pod at the start thus retaining the detail, and because in the Neutral Route Shadow has to be successfully convinced by Eggman that he's not really himself but actually a defective one of his Androids that went rogue. While there are also several story factors that lead into Shadow adopting this mistaken identity I think it wouldn't make a ton of sense if even after a decent amount of gaslighting from Eggman one look between the Androids and himself didn't cause the obvious revelation that even if one of them actually defectively thought it was real they would just look like an android knockoff playing at Shadow and not like himself. Also, if the Androids really looked like such rigid knockoffs in-universe I doubt that Omega would have to ask, even if his asking wasn't out of hard logic but due to their friendship. Granted this is all speculation and personal interpretation on my part. If it's an in-canon discrepancy then our Shadow being the original and thus far more detailed than his duplicates is probably what prompted Omega to ask although it was likely a formality and not at all necessary. Perhaps the sight of his friend snapped him out of his usual single-minded "Utterly Destroy Eggman" haze and he was vocally processing his surroundings. Great review, I like how you didn’t hate on the game just for the sake of it. There was plenty of potential for a great game here, but it was bogged down by the need to have to replay the game over and over again to get all of the different endings. I hope some day we get another Shadow the Hedgehog video game, the potential is there it just needs to be executed properly. With Shadow being featured in Sonic movie 3 who knows what the future has in store for him. I’m hoping we see Black Doom again at some point, he was a cool antagonist.
I had this game. And I genuinely loved and appreciated it for it was and what it tried to be. It was different....it was EDGY.... But I do not give a SHADOW VOICE DaMN about any of that. I got this for the PS2 as a kid and it was the only sonic game I had ever played up until then. I actually remember enjoying it somewhat, but even I knew as a kid how edgy it was trying to be and failing miserably. Looking back I respect them for trying new things tho.
Design and concept-wise I really think there's a lot to work with here; hopefully the series is looking at character spinoffs again after Frontiers' ending.
I’m gonna be totally honest with you. If I just let my inhibitions go and accept the dark edge the game has… this game is a LOT of fun. Genuinely cool gameplay and a pretty unique (albeit a little corny) aesthetic. The gun play is cool, the levels are cool, it’s all really cool. All I need to do is let myself have that dumb fun.
As a 10 year old kid, I 100% this game. It remains the only game I've totally, completely, 100%. I LOVED it. I played it every day, weekends were spent strictly with Shadow the Hedgehog until I got to 100%. A few months ago, now 27, I tried the game again. What the hell was 10 year old me on?
A lot of people hate the players choice cases and it makes me want a complete collection of them 🥺 they’re just tragically misunderstood. But anyway nice video, this game is a near perfect game and I’m glad you gave it space on the channel
I don't know if you mentioned in your SA2 video but there's a bunch of neat character interactions in the final boss there too that you have to stall for.
There's something weird and indescribable about the visuals of late-'90s/early-2000s Sega games, especially on the Dreamcast and PS2/Xbox/Gamecube. Whatever engine they ran on made everything look like an arcade game.
Honestly one of my favorite "Sonic" games to play. Sure it does have problems but the good overweighs the bad for me. Now the true gem for this game is the "Expert Mode" that gets unlocked by getting all A ranks. (which is extremely easy) All levels get remixed and they are the traditional "start to finish". Yes even the "find said people" levels. They're at the end of the level.
its completely not even that bad, i played this for hours back then, unlocking dozens of the "endings". it looked so so so much better than adventure 2 and it played very smoothly in a lot of places

I will say you got black doom wrong in the beginning. Shadow already had a past and he promised doom hed get the chaos emeralds when the time comes, the time came and initally shadow ignores it but doom shows up telling shadow he must now collect the emeralds as promised, Shadow is confused but Doom dosent question it because it seems he dosent have time for whatever happened to shadows memories. Shadow not knowing who he is and with doom disappearing after ignoring his questions leaves him with collecting the emeralds as his only lead, so he rushed into the city where he finds more leads you can choose to take on, like sonic or the army
The idea of having multiple endings is a good idea and should be used more in games but personal I think the fact that you have to get all of the other endings to get the true ending is the weakness of this mechanic. And I don't like how this Edge Lord Shadow is how he's portrayed instead of the Shadow from Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and admittedly Sonic 06
This game was too hard when I played it as a kid. I remember trying to finish this game multiple times but the gameplay was so annoying somehow that I could never get myself to finish it. But I was so hyped when I got it for the first time and the first level was very memorable.
Same fuck the old Sonic games lmao I hate most of them with the exception of Riders, Colors and Generations that’s it and day time missions in Unleashed, never the night levels..
K so this game--the story specifically I think it's one of the best in the series with the japaniese voices translations cuz this game was translated poorly. The theming around how expeirinces and the people you meet influence how you make decisions what you want to do with your life, is great stuff and shapes how you live. So the non-Canon-endings I interpret it as possible routes shaodw could of taken my favourite non-canon ending in the game personally is the one where the military commander talks to shadow and says how he was responsible for all the deaths that took place aboard the arc and shadow actually takes responsibility for it but first he needs to find out the truth for himself. The ending where everything is falling is contrasted with his heads pace beautifully and is a cool call back to sonic adventure 2. I like how after he defeats eggman that shadow realizes that he is the one the protector of the "sacred arc" and he will do anything to protect it and he sort of turns into knukles the protect of the arc contrasted by knukles being the protector of the master emerald. The final story of the game is the best because in this story line shadow doesn't let anyone make decisions for him even maria the person who said his purpose was to protect the people of earth. He puts his past behind him and makes decisions for him self and tosses the picture of Gerald and Maria behind him. Never Turn Back.... If you only had to beat this game 5 time to see all the endings or let you select from different areas. This game wouldn't be nearly as tedious. Personally though I still like it though and for me shadows controls and high-speed is super fun to run with and blaze through levels with his gun. This game also needs a remake just some fine tuning holy crap. SA1, SA2, SONIC HEROES, SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG, SONIC 06 NEED REMAKES!
I remember getting this as a gift and being kinda disappointed as a kid. I don’t think it’s that great a game, but I’m occasionally compelled to go back and try to go through a certain storyline throughs. Like most games in the Sonic franchise, there’s at least a few songs in it that I really enjoy.
This game has more choice and consequences than some RPGs out here and that's the only positive thing I'll say about it outside of it's meme potential.
This game btw is an Alternate Outcome of events after SA2 so not a sequel to Heroes or that game happening, Omega even asks Shadow in one level if he's the original and Shadow comes across Omega and Rouge in different levels, not them coming after him.
Loved this game highly as a kid back in 2007 for the ps2 at a local game crazy store. Favorite stages were lava shelter and digital foundry also both music tracks and level design amazed me back then. Still appreciate this game though.
I always thought it was weird that this came AFTER sonic heroes, but it sort of makes sense with the story. Really though, this should have been before SH and better explains why shadow isn't dead.
Exactly man that’s what I’m saying, a lot of the time I don’t think what Sonic Team did was a “horrible” idea, I just think the way they executed it was poor, if they had a bit more time to work on Shadow it could’ve been something awesome. Strange, off-putting compared to the rest of the series?? Yeah, but I believe it would have its own charm
I like the game but there’s way too many times you have to beat the game to get the true ending. 10 is a lot but it would have been fine if you didn’t have to replay the entire game
I feel like this game completely did a 180 on Shadow’s personality. I don’t even know what his character is supposed to be anymore because of all of the inconsistency across various games after SA2.
I mean imo it kinda makes sense bc is a shadow that came from heroes that still has some amnesia, not to mention in the true ending he saves the world so, its not that big of a personality change
@@Banana807 I mean saving the world is morals and the whole game is about morals, so that front I won’t argue about, but his personality is mean and he randomly became so egotistical and careless of others in between games
I played this game when I was 12 and no problem unlocking the endings. It felt easy to me to figure out how to get all the endings. And since I loved the game I didn’t mind playing it 10 times lol. I got the secret ending without knowing there was one. But of course as a kid with no sense, it’s easier to do that since you don’t realize it’s a bad game lol. Not showing off just wanted to show a different perspective where for a 11-12 yeat old it wasn’t confusing or anything

With Shadow being featured in Sonic movie 3 who knows what the future has in store for him. I’m hoping we see Black Doom again at some point, he was a cool antagonist.
I loved this game. It was weird but badass to see shadow wielding firearms. Gonna get back soon.
Once you've mastered the controls. You'll be robbed of lives with how homing is on here lol. Still fun just challenging
I had this game.
And I genuinely loved and appreciated it for it was and what it tried to be.
It was different....it was EDGY....
But I do not give a
SHADOW VOICE DaMN about any of that.
When I got the hang of it...when I learned how to play it with confidence and vigor I was so happy.
Cosmic Fall had the best and loudest music ever.
"ARe YoU ThE OrIGiNaL!?"
"Doctor I'll make you regret creating me."
"Black bull burn this city to ASHES!"
Damn it I can't lose here.
Damn, it's a DEAD END.
Damn, we've been detected.
Damn the ship got away.
Damn you it's not TRUE!
Damn YOUUUUUuuuu!
Where's that DAMN 4TH chaos Emerald!?
"With that Green 🍏🍏🍏 Emerald, you can unlock UNLiMiTeD PoWeR!"
"Doooo NoTt ATaaaaCKK My SoldieRRss!"
"SHADOW, DAMN you it been 50 years."
"If you find shadow with the black aliens, then kill them ALL!"
That photo of SoNiC and SHaDoW is and always will be precious.
UGH. Those black creatures.... they're up there ... That's where the answers are ... I HAVE to get to that comet!
Those ..... ANDROIDs....the ones that look like me....AM ...I-???
"Yes."
WHaat ...(Dejected)
YOU and OMeGA are MY Creations...But you betray me as you stand here before me . So now, I will DESTROY YOU BOTH!
18:06 yes , it is RAW.
You're going straight to HeLL!
20:09.
I'm going to screenshot the hell outta this, Damn it!
With the power of these Emeralds... I'm going to DESTROY this DAMN planet...this is WHO I AM!
HahahahahahahaHAHAHaHAHhaHaHaHAHAHa!
Villain no more.
Now I'm fighting to protect The Planet Earth that Maria once loved.
22:12 .
BLaCK DooM: Then, Prepare TO DIEEEEEEEEE!
23:20!
27:22 Indeed, this game was made to compete with Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank and That ONE OTHER ONe .
I'm being serious.
Also, "The black aliens will feel their own bloody hell." - Commander
Unpopular Opinion: I prefer Shadow the Hedgehog to Sonic Heroes.
I got this for the PS2 as a kid and it was the only sonic game I had ever played up until then. I actually remember enjoying it somewhat, but even I knew as a kid how edgy it was trying to be and failing miserably. Looking back I respect them for trying new things tho.
i love this game. i don't care if it's the worst game of all time, i love it.
Where's that DAMN 4th chaos emerald?
Yooo that Daredevil sweater is dope. Great video, Matty!
Design and concept-wise I really think there's a lot to work with here; hopefully the series is looking at character spinoffs again after Frontiers' ending.
I wish I still had my ganecube memory from my childhood. I 100% this game back in the day.
Oh my god i remember seeing ads in 2000s comics for this
the branching mission system is such an ingenious thing to add to a platformer, i wish other games had taken this kind of idea.
Didn't like this game much as a kid when it came out. Tried it again as an adult and I actually love it now
Shadow is the only hog that will pull out the blicky
Westopolis never gets tiring for me, especially with that bicycle chime on a banger track 😂
I was looking forward to this one! To this day i still can't believe this game exists
Shadow is my favourite sonic character of all time and that game was amazing
Love Shadow and this game flaws included, great review!
Youth and inexperience is a hell of a drug
Shadow The Hedgehog is loaded with great systems that just need mods to get out of each other's way.
A lot of people hate the players choice cases and it makes me want a complete collection of them 🥺 they’re just tragically misunderstood. But anyway nice video, this game is a near perfect game and I’m glad you gave it space on the channel
Played this game so much as a kid even got the secret true ending by beating all levels and getting the highest score them
I don't know if you mentioned in your SA2 video but there's a bunch of neat character interactions in the final boss there too that you have to stall for.
There's something weird and indescribable about the visuals of late-'90s/early-2000s Sega games, especially on the Dreamcast and PS2/Xbox/Gamecube. Whatever engine they ran on made everything look like an arcade game.
This game doesn’t have the US, it’s called the United Federation, just wanted to point that out
I love the music so much for this game 😍
Honestly one of my favorite "Sonic" games to play. Sure it does have problems but the good overweighs the bad for me. Now the true gem for this game is the "Expert Mode" that gets unlocked by getting all A ranks. (which is extremely easy) All levels get remixed and they are the traditional "start to finish".
Yes even the "find said people" levels. They're at the end of the level.
its completely not even that bad, i played this for hours back then, unlocking dozens of the "endings".
it looked so so so much better than adventure 2 and it played very smoothly in a lot of places
I find it so funny that Maria runs as fast as Shadow
the opening song hits SO HARD that I listen to it unironically. CAN YOU SEE ALL OF ME!! ? 🗣️🗣️WALK INTO MY MYSTERY! *STEP INSIDE AND HOLD ON FOR DEAR LIFE!!!* ‼️‼️‼️😈 DO YPU REMEMBER ME, CAPTURE YOU OR SET YOU FREE, *I AM ALL, I AM ALL OF MEEEEEEEEE!!~* 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️💯 *epic chorus time idk I forgor*
fr I can't agree more
I will say you got black doom wrong in the beginning.
I loved this game as a kid
I emulated this recently and actually enjoyed myself
How did you emulate it? I just recently got into pc gaming.
I first played this game as a 10 yo in 2012 on the GameCube. Don't care what anyone says. Shadow the Hedgehog is a modern classic.
Yeah that et game was a classic too💀
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was young when this came out but I loved this game! Maybe it was just because he looked cool AF
for years called myself Shadow hedgehog... I still think I'm shadow after 35 years..
You need to play Metal Wolf Chaos. Get the remake if you have to
Played this game on my PS2! Good Old Daysss!!! ❤️
To this day i still enjoyed this game especially the 2 player mode with my siblings.
@@reallyhimongod Sonic Mania.
I played this game when I was little. I remember it being really fun
This game has more choice and consequences than some RPGs out here and that's the only positive thing I'll say about it outside of it's meme potential.
But you have to be with charms the wasp 10x
@@jefftakesdscakes30 Charmy is a bee, not a wasp.
@@jefftakesdscakes30 you can get 8 endings while never meeting him it's not that bad
@@Theserperiortrainer497 yes it is 2 are same clips with different lines

Between adventure 2 and heroes there was Sonic battle for the GBA, there is the "surprise" you asked for
This game btw is an Alternate Outcome of events after SA2 so not a sequel to Heroes or that game happening, Omega even asks Shadow in one level if he's the original and Shadow comes across Omega and Rouge in different levels, not them coming after him.
The early 2000s VIBE is awesome! I miss it.
Loved this game highly as a kid back in 2007 for the ps2 at a local game crazy store. Favorite stages were lava shelter and digital foundry also both music tracks and level design amazed me back then. Still appreciate this game though.
I love this game i got it on release day and beat it , the graphics still blow my mind
I actually really like the way they revealed what happened go Shadow
Edge edging edge of edge, edge for edging edge edge... Edge!
Man.
That game was something.
I always thought it was weird that this came AFTER sonic heroes, but it sort of makes sense with the story. Really though, this should have been before SH and better explains why shadow isn't dead.
FINALLY
Exactly man that’s what I’m saying, a lot of the time I don’t think what Sonic Team did was a “horrible” idea, I just think the way they executed it was poor, if they had a bit more time to work on Shadow it could’ve been something awesome. Strange, off-putting compared to the rest of the series?? Yeah, but I believe it would have its own charm
My man! Gettin the goods out!
I loved this game
looked for this video for like an hour when you posted the Adventure Dx Replay-through.
i love this game was my first favorite sonic game until i played SA2
I like the game but there’s way too many times you have to beat the game to get the true ending. 10 is a lot but it would have been fine if you didn’t have to replay the entire game
I bought this game recently when my GF moved in her Wii that can play GameCube games. I played this so much of a kid and love the shit out of it 😂
Who's watching this because of the hype of Sonic x Shadow
Haven’t watched the video yet, but I won’t accept anything less than “this game is amazing”
This game was awesome hands down amazing
Never
I love this game and nothing can change my mind
I remember really enjoying this game and I played it religiously for a long time till finally one day I just stopped
