Dan Baker is a documentary and street photography based in the UK. Primarily taking photos of the British seaside, over the years he has built an outstanding eye for detail, colour, composition and of course the candid nature of the general public. In this episode of Picture Profile Dan shares with us his creative thinking and workflow behind how and why he does what he does.

A big thank you to Dan Baker for sharing everything he did in this video. With this episode being the start of hopefully an exciting series I appreciate Dan effectively being my test dummy. I hope you enjoy the words of wisdom that Dan had to share as much as I did.

I hope everyone enjoyed episode 1 of Picture Profile… Now I need your help! Who else should feature on this new series? 🤔🎥
Josh Edgoose
Joshua Jackson or.. me!
Sean Tucker
I second those already mentioned, plus Niall McDiarmid and Shane Taylor please!
The legend that is Matt Hall.
I've always said it, and I'll say it again. Street is a hard discipline. When I see these seemingly simplistic, but not simple images, I know they hide a weight of intellect, dedication and passion. That's what I see behind these images. I also see the humour and empathy of the 'old greats' which is inspiring to see. Thanks Mike for making this and shining light on such talented artists. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
Brilliant words Patrick. I couldn't agree more!
I think its so important as a starting photographer to hear a Pro photographer say I take 200 photos, and I might get 4-5 photos that are ok in a good day, and maybe one good one here and there. Because you sometimes see these videos on RUclips of street photographers walking around, taking photos and it seems like every photo they take is good (you forget that the video you just watched is probably hours if not days of filming all condensed into 10 minutes). When you try it, it doesn’t come out the way you wanted or like you saw in the video, and you get discouraged
Watch videos of just one photo walk and you'll notice the opposite. Most of the time, _none_ of the pictures look explicitly great and you'll see the comment section full of hate, like, "How dare they call themselves street photographers! Look at their pictures, it's all worthless!" Really, what do those people expect from one single photo walk? I suppose they never went to shoot street themselves ever in their lives. If you put in a little bit of effort and research the photographers at all, most of them do have some really cool stuff! But that doesn't automatically happen just because you happen to be mic'ed up and have a cameraperson at your side.
Dan is a remarkable guy! I have had the privilege to spend a day with him and I learnt so much and I'm so pleased you have documented his POV and and his enthusiasm with his love of Photography.
Thank you so much for posting this 🙏
Thank you for watching and I'm pleased you enjoyed this!
I absolutely love these series, well done Mike. Very very inspiring.
Thanks for watching! Glad you like it 👊🏻
Really inspiring look into Dan Baker and his process, looking forward to all the future picture profile episodes!
Thanks Evan! Dans work is definitely inspiring.
I love this profile series, Mike. Keep ‘em coming 📸
Thanks! Will do!
Dan Baker is very inspirational the photos and his approach to street photography is fantastic to anyone starting out in the art
Couldn't agree more. Thanks for watching!
Thanks
Excellent video and photographs. Thanks
I've seen 2 of these now. Really great photographers, but also your storytelling and cinematography are excellent. Looking forward to more.
Filming episode 3 this month!!
A wonderful insight into Dan Baker and his views and inspiration of photography, I’m not a street photographer but I can appreciate good honest interview that Dan gave. You’ve set the bar high Mike with episode one looking forward to more
Inspiring to hear and see someone that has mastered the craft. I’m just beginning my street photography journey, but it’s already so addicting. Like Dan said, it’s finding those moments where everything just falls into place. It’s what keeps us all coming back for more!
Ps beautifully shot and edited. Really well done Mike.
Exactly that mate, we keep going back because who knows what out there. Thanks for the kind words. I had a lot of fun putting this together.
This was highly enjoyable. Thank you for sharing it!
Glad you enjoyed this! Thank you for watching.
Fascinating insight of Dan’s way of working. As always love seeing photos of the seaside, especially Cleethorpes ✌️
Well done on this Mike. I think this is a really nice change from most of the POV street videos that swamp RUclips. The pace is fantastic and format is refreshing. More of these please buddy.
Thanks Mark! I'm pleased you enjoyed this - who next?
I love Dan's work -- I live in a small town and constantly reference Dan as an inspiration working within the confines of a small town/area/space.
Really enjoyable video. A quiet moment to myself, first coffee of the day and an interesting video with beautiful stills 👍🏼
Excellent stuff Mike, I loved every minute of this - very inspiring.
Your ideas are great, with the emphasis on thinking and how it influences seeing - which are the first-most considerations, having less to do with the actual camera or techniques. This was a great little video. One reason I've subscribed for your outlook on the matter of creating meaningful images. It's simple, genuine and so well expressed. Thanks for this.
Thanks for the kind words! I very much appreciate it 👌🏻
Genius of series!! Mike!!
Pleased you’re enjoying them mate
Excellent piece, I am so excited that you’ve taken this on. Hearing from the Ascoughs would be nice.
Another good interview to your series (I've watched the first 3 in reverse order). I enjoyed Roman's interview of yourself as well Mike. All the best for your 2024 photography journey
Such a wonderful video. I just enjoyed every moment of it. Dan is one of my favorite photographer and I really love his work. His works are really inspiring ..... Love from Bangladesh ....
Thanks! Dan's work speaks for itself really. Glad you liked the video.
Amazing video dude - Thanks for putting it together
Can't agree more about the viewpoint when shooting on street, the pleasure always seems like a random surprise to meet, I just like the style , thanks..
Mike I have seen this and Paul Harrison this is an amazing series already and I hope so much more to come very selfless EXCELLENT
Great video Mike, thanks
Most enjoyable and inspiring. I've only recently started to take street photography a bit more seriously after years of taking traditional landscapes and nice but dull images. I totally get it when Dan says he has to take a photo of the flying flag because if he doesn't, it feels wrong. I generally take anything up to two hours to start 'seeing' photos but I love it.
Thank you! Getting warmed up and into the zone is important, if it's a photo of a flag then so be it.
Great interview Dan. Can’t wait to see that body of work you are working on.
You and me both!
Loved this video, Mike. So interesting to hear other perspectives and see others’ work. Thoroughly enjoyed.
That's what I love to hear.- thank you!
Love Dan's work, great start Mike looking forward to more from this series
Thanks Preet! Appreciate that 👌🏻
Lovely profile. Wish there would be more profiles like this. Compared to thousands of gear reviews, this feels inspiring!
First time seeing this video and I’m a fan of Dan’s work! Excellent images and video.
Thanks for watching! Dan really is exceptional!
Great video. Saying all the right things! Anyone drawn to this type of more philosophical chat, I'd also suggest the Reuben Radding episode of Walkie Talkie. He pins a lot of the same ideas down using entirely different points.
Great video and Dan, how wonderful are his photos ! !
Brilliant profile docs! Extremely inspiring!
Glad you enjoyed them!
Awesome video! Great artist & great person. Thanks for sharing this
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed this.
One of my favourite photographers
That was outstanding mate, enjoyed every second of it. Well done 👌
Really appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed it
@@MikeChudley your welcome buddy
Wow mate, you absolutely nailed this! Great stuff. I love the kind of interviews where you don’t hear the interviewers voice much (obviously nothing personal) - Sean Tucker does it too. Nice little section on the books too… need to get Cape light (think it’s £££ now though) and more Eggleston! Top stuff. Will look forward to episode 2.
Thanks Adam. That means a lot - It felt nice to showcase someone else on the channel and focus entirely on piecing together the video. I'll definitely being doing more of these. But who next?
Really tastefully shot and handled throughout Mike. A great portrait of a great photographer. Loving that analogue score at the end. And yeah Matt Hall would be an awesome next guest. Keep on. Loving it. DT
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing this. Look forward for more episodes
It’s all about seeing & enjoying it.. Well done 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
His way of creating its so similar to mine! Nice video! Thans!
An inspiring video. Thank you. You just have to be there - such good advice. Looking forward to future videos in the series.
Really enjoyed this 👌 fascinating to see how people see different things. Glad I'm not the only one shooting hundreds of pictures and seeing a few good ones. Excellent interview 👏
Absolutely brilliant video! It's amazing peering into the mind of another photographer!
All this talk of inspiration has got me all inspired!
Can't wait to see who you focus on next in this series 😊
Thanks Jack! Glad you enjoyed it. Looking forward to making more of these.
I really loved this content 🙏
Love love love this idea - great watch
This series is so inspiring. Please do an interview with the South Coast photographer Paul Russell.
great work Mike!
Thanks Anton!
Fantastic video Mike, honestly could be one of your best. The content itself aside, great music and vibe through the whole video. You've obviously done a really good job in your role as the interviewer as well, to be getting such good insights from Dan. And it's great to get alternative perspectives and stuff from other artists whose work you personally enjoy.
Wouldn't be surprised to see this as a promotion posted by Fuji or Leica or a docu-series on Vice. Honestly just done a perfect job. And can't wait to see more of this style of video!!
Very interesting and inspiring. I live close to Weston-upper-Mare, and frequently photograph there, so I found this to be particularly fascinating. I really liked a lot of the images. Thank you both, and by the way, I’d be very happy to be featured!!
I'm sure you've seen a lot of similar stuff over by the coast as well then. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Another very enjoyable video cracking work Dan and Mike. It goes to show you don't need to live in the big cities to produce banging photography. I keep looking at setting up a website, Squarespace is looking good. I'm not sure anyone actually]y looks at websites do they, I know I don't, I guess I'm lazy admin wise, I shoot a lot on a daily basis, I use RUclips to present some of my work which I enjoy I don't try to sell anything, I don't even tout for subs, I am unorganised tech social media wise all I want to do id shoot, so not sure a website would do anything for me, maybe I'll give it a nudge one day. Loving this Profile series mike keep em coming cheers
Wonderful, thanks
Really inspirational stuff!! This entire channel has made me want to go out more with my cameras. I fell out of love with Photography after being a wedding photographer for 10 years. Since stopping that, I have been wanting to get back to what was my absolute passion at one point and this entire YT channel has given me that. Incredible profile of Dan Baker too! Does anyone know what lens he tends to use? Thanks again Mike!
Amazing, I love to hear it! Drop Dan a message about gear, I’m sure he will be happy to comment 👌🏻
Exact same experience. Forcing myself to do them to make a living in photography was awful and killed the joy of it. The most enjoyable thing has been saying “no” to wedding gigs over the last few years! Slowly finding my way back to. Best on your journey back.
Late (fashionably?) to the party here but wanted to say I really enjoyed this!
Excellent interview; very inspiring!
Was the kids ok? 😂 great video again Mike, loving this format
Also happy snapping can yield some surprises I have found.
Really enjoyable video. Inspiring as well.
Excellent video! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
28mm ? Thanks Mike! This guy has the eye. Really enhanced by his work!
That’s a 35mm Lux I believe
@Dan Baker that’s an impressive looking bookcase - aside from the books you mentioned, where would you recommend starting for inspiration?
Great work!👍🏾
What make is the Rucksack that your sporting?
Please and thanks!
Great street philosophy 'everything's an opportunity' but only when you're 'being open to it'.
Really nice video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Just remember folks, you dont need an expensive camera to take great photos, especially when it comes to street photography.
Get to know your camera, settings etc, and practice, and most of all enjoy .
I wish I could get this look with my X100V. Any recipe thats coming close to that?
I bet this is lightroom. Looks similar to Josh Edgoose aka spicy meatball
These are edited raw files yeah.
Very cool… 🙏🏿
8:45 wise words, the bokeh becomes a one-trick pony when overused :)
There's already a Telegram scam bot! Congrats to the real Mike Chudley, this is a good sign :D
Fantastic piece of work! Was this shot with the XH2s?
Canon R6! Thanks for watching
What happend to the old chd bmx videos ? Shane they've all been taken down
Do Holly-Marie Cato next!
📽спасибо
Which camera is Dan using?
Leica M11
@@MikeChudley Gosh that's a high price camera.
About Squarespace: the best was Roman Fox in one of his videos: 'Now a word about the sponsor of this video, which is.... Me!'
Mike - seen a response on my previous comment - is this from you? Not sure??
If it's about Tele gram then no! It's a spam. Please report mate.
Sean Tucker
does Dan make a living from his photo work?
He said he likes deeeepth of field best. f32
Lmao so you talk about what you think isn't street photography then proceed to take those exact shots. No meaning, no story. 🤦🏻♂
Seriously, how much money did you waste buying ice cream cones just to throw/place on the ground. Another thing what was the point? I'm sure if you chucked some chips in someones coat hood then photographed them getting attacked by seagulls that would be a damn sight less boring than upside down cones. Go ahead, tell me i'm wrong…..you know i'm not.
… your wrong.
There you go.
After walking the seafront for many many years I have accumulated a number of dropped ice cream photos. All of the shots are undisturbed and as I found them.
To plant shots would bore me, the thrill of finding little gems, is what keeps and going back.
Cheers for watching though 🙏
@@photodan88 …superb Dan that you answered me! Take a look at 11 minutes 21 seconds, bit hard to take that being natural Dan. Three cones in a line, all upside down. Hmmm….are you sure? Quite a few ice cream cones lying around Dan, kids aren't that clumsy with their ice cream are they? I look forward to your response.
@@68blues seriously they really are, there’s so many dropped cones at the hight of summer it’s crazy.
The three in a row that you are referring to, I really did find them like that. I even asked the ice cream shop owner if he had put them there to mess with me. He hadn’t.
If you still don’t believe me, then I invite you to come shoot with me some time here at Cleethorpes. It really is a treasure trove of opportunities.
Its kind of sad that you just assume that Dan set this up for a photo. If you had paid attention to the video and what it was about then you'd know that Dan spends a lot of time in Cleethorpe searching for the perfect moment to capture. Dan has clearly dedicated a lot of time to his craft and this location and it pays off in some of the beautiful photos he captures. Rather than just dismiss someones hard work and dedication you should take time to think about how much work has gone into capturing intimate moments like this so you and others can enjoy it.
@@photodan88 ….I'm up in Scotland Dan, can't see me hitting Cleethorpes anytime soon. Got a question for you. You are wearing a Leica. Nobody ever has a Leica as their first camera, you must have went through quite a few different models before you reached it. Here's my list. Berkeley Keystone 210. Praktica, Minolta, Nikon, Canon now a Panasonic Lumix. Four SLR's now a compact.
Something really interesting happened to me the other day while out shooting. I’ve been doing street photography for a couple years now, but more on the aesthetics side where I find a good composition/light/shadow and wait for someone to walk though it. Now I wanting to dig deeper and capture moments, gestures and layers. The other day, I spotted 2 gestures and a moment. I missed two of those shots because I couldn’t get there quick enough, but I was very happy I was able to spot them. I can feel my photographic eye and perspective transitioning. I can’t wait to follow this new path and create a different body of work for myself.
Absolutely love this. Great to hear how you eye develops. One of the best things about photography is the process, never mind if you get the shot or not.
@@MikeChudley the process is so great man. I would say the pictures are the drug and the act of taking those pictures is the high.
