- Joe Howard is a photographer based in London. He's been shooting since 2010 and over the past 5 years I have focused on creating work while exploring new places and visiting my childhood home in Cornwall.
Joe's work pays particular attention to light and colour in the form of observational landscapes and street photography. "I believe if the light is just right, the benign can be beautiful." - Joe Howard

“Influence is good but too much influence restricts you… go and make work without thinking about where you’re putting it and what it’s being used for and who’s going to see it” … wow, this hit hard. Fantastic interview thanks for this guys!
I particularly liked that too, thanks for watching
This video is a gold mine. I've been saying how people take photos like, "that picture would do well on Instagram!" and not, "I like this picture and here's the story behind it."
I did that for a while, I found that I was getting too focused on the numbers going up and being super self-critical over my work so I just never posted anything, now I take photos that I like and I can post whatever I want, however much I want, there's so much freedom in being yourself.
Thanks for making this video!
Thanks for watching! Glad you could resonate with Joe and enjoyed the video ✌️
Very cool hearing Joe’s perspective. “Go and make work without thinking about where you’re putting it, what it’s being used for and who’s going to see it”. Such an important quote.
"If I didn't take photos I wouldn't be paying attention" love it.
That intro goes hard! That cut on “wouldn’t be paying attention”, was powerful. Love this video, Mike.
Yeaaaah thanks man. Loved editing this.
Loved this!!! ❤
Thanks Peter! Glad you liked it :)
Followed Joe on Instagram for years, he’s been my favourite photographer for a long time, so it was fantastic to hear an insight in to his approach
Love these picture profile series - great to learn about new photographers and their work. Thanks for making this.
Love to hear it - thank you!
Very very well done. a proper doc this is
Thanks Roman! Appreciate that 👊
The bedroom photo with the combination of warm and cool colors! 🔥 Great video in terms of production and content!
This series is absolutely brilliant
Thank you!!
Kudos to both of you - this was great! Love Joe's pics :)
Thanks James! Appreciate that 👌
He's a fellow "Outside Photographer" James. When he was struggling with "I don't really fit into a category. I don't know what kind of photographer I am". I thought "Popsys has the answer!"
Great profile video. Joe comes across as such an amiable and likeable guy. Love the use of the 4x3 aspect. Pity my xt20 doesn’t shoot in 4x3.
I resonate with 95% of what he said (with the exception of his tepidness towards taking a bad photo, I fire away xD). It was really nice to see somebody so talented reaffirm a lot of the things I think about photography and reject so many of the negative moods and biases in the photography community. Really loved this little documentary Mike, nice job once again!
Loved Joes' attitude. Another great Picture Profile
Cheers man! 👊
Another brilliant episode of Picture Profile and this series is exactly the reason why I love photography! Well done Mike and of course Joe Howard who's very entertaining 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
What an amazing video. Really resonated with me.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What an amazing vid, love Joe Howard!!!
Such a great video with lots of wise words. Really inspiring! And I love Joe's work obviously, fantastic photographer!
I really enjoy this mini series of yours Mike. I'm sure you would prefer to be shooting and editing video about your own work, but all of the videos that you have produced in this series so far have been very special and very inspiring pieces of work.
Thank you for sharing this! What a fascinating insight into Joe's creative approach.
So good. Loved this
Brilliant, thanks for watching!
How am I just finding this guy! What a breath of fresh air listening to him describe his simple approach to photography.
only 8 minutes into this vid so far and this is already exactly what I needed before my photowalk tmrw morning! Thank you for posting this Mike. Joe is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Joe is the best! What a great video
What a powerful portrait! Very inspiring; BTW I‘ve got tinted glasses too. I know exactly what he is talking about.

Such an amazing video with a photographer who truly loves his craft. You’re videos of yourself and the videos you make when interviewing someone are mint.
Really appreciate that
@@MikeChudley keep up the work Mike, been watching your videos when I started getting into photography which lead me into the passion of street photography. Can’t wait to see more of your journey.

Great interview, great guest. It was such a joy watching it.
Great video, with lots of great messages. This was refreshing as I’m so exhausted of the played out “bro dude” RUclips photographers nowadays. Thanks for a quality video worth watching.

Wow, what a great interview. I’d love to talk with him over dinner-with you, of course! Thanks for this. Superb.
I like him and I see me in the same approach of photography.
Thumbnail got me thinking that it was Joe Greer for a second, they even have the same name 🙃
Beautifully made video! Thank you for sharing his work ♥
Great video, lovely guy, and wise words. What on earth is that film camera, more information please!
Photo beanie!
This episode is a viiiiiibe, love Joe's work.
"There are no solutions to problems. Just trade-offs." Thomas Sowell
Upgrade is minimal but the V is the better camera in my opinion 😅
What's the filter you are using on the front?
What is that Filter? Which Brand is that? Does anyone know?
The filter is made by Mamiya specifically for the Mamiya 7&6 👍🏼
Anyone know what camera the big one is?
The beanie hhahahahahaahahahha
Could someone please tell me which filter he uses for his Mamiya 7? :)
It’s called ZE702 👌🏼. Super catchy. 😂
Thank you!@@Jwhowardphoto 🫶
lovely photographer this guy
I’m not familiar with Joe. I honestly thought this was a parody 😂. Very good regardless.
Joe is Paul McCartney 2.0
Please explain the uniform. I mean hat.
For most … Or just take photos of what you see as you say, never log into instagram and create without it taking concepts not photos from those who went before
Great summery though and I know I’m being uncommercial here .. but then I’m old, I don’t give a % about instagram, I am not and am unlikely to ever be pro, with these factors comes some of the freedom’s you espouse
Joe’s Mamiya sounds a bit squeaky
Plastic cameras 🙄
having a girlfriend is just problem solving
4:00 pretty bold to compare yourself to Saul Leiter...
Not sure you were paying attention 🧐. I didn’t compare myself to anyone, I was discussing the difference between seeing something and then taking a photo. 😉
I mean... you literally say you see things that others don't the way Saul Leiter did. That is a comparison
Again, think you’re taking this conversation out of context. Which is cool, I shall explain for your piece of mind. I’m not comparing myself to anyone. We’re talking about how different people can see the same scene differently. There is no comparison, or better or worse. Some people really don’t like abstract photography like that and some people love it. We’re not discussing quality of work, we’re discussing how people see the world. And we all see it differently, that’s what makes it interesting. If I say Saul Leiter uses his eyes and I do also, then yes I’m comparing myself to him, and every photographer ever. Hope you can sleep well now, knowing I wouldn’t do such a thing. 😂
Sony cameras are better tho, autofocus is the new tech
very nice
