I think one of the hardest parts of photography is that we compare our everyday to the lifetime works of those who came before us. If any one of my photos is still being looked at in a hundred years time, I'll call that a win. Keep fighting the good fight Thomas, we're all here for you as much as the photos, if not more so.

I always admired how you always kept it real. It is refreshing to see in a world of influencer photographers that show only their best work (which often times is not even good). Thanks to these kind of videos is why I have not quit photography. We all go through rough patches, event the best, like yourself. Take this time as a moment to appreciate everything you have done, look at your past work, see everything you have achieved, and continue moving forward. What's refreshing is YOU, young man! Follow your craft and work hard to master it. BUT always remember it's FUN! I've done this since I was 10 years old, so just over 50 years now and I'm still enthralled by the MAGIC of making images. Took longer in the old days but it was the anticipation of getting back to the darkroom, developing your film, eagerly waiting to see good exposures, then drying and cleaning, and PRINTING! The MAGIC of seeing your image in the amber/red light, begin to form and realize in the developer, the impatience of stopping then fixing and you're finally able to turn on the lights and see if you GOT IT. Often NOT but when you did, "Oh, what exultation!" Today, I'm still a child, all giddy and snapping away, and instantly gratified by seeing the image appear on my view screen and so anxious to get it into post and to make it as I'd envisioned. I applaud your enthusiasm Gaston and best of fortune in your own photographic journey! I have a nagging suspicion you'll make a good go of it.

Before continuing, I wanted to say that I really feel for you-I can sense the struggle you've been going through since the videos about your knee and the realities of getting older. It genuinely made me feel a bit sad to see you feeling down. I'm facing a similar challenge here, even if it’s in a different genre. The stories you share in these videos go far beyond just the 'quality of photography.' They’re real and resonate deeply. People say that the toughest moments are actually good-they’re turning points in our lives and careers because they put us at a crossroads. Just keep doing your thing...everything will fall into place Tom!

This isn’t really related to the content but perhaps the notion. I went to a photography book festival in Bristol recently. Surrounded by dozens of photographers with hundreds of their photo books. Such incredible talent and art. And I immediately hated it. Immediately felt like my photography is dogshit. Tom, thanks so much for this video. I've found myself in a rut with my photography this year having very very low shutter count over the course of 10 months. Until, I've just returned from spending 2 weeks in Scotland in Glencoe and Skye. And then another week in Ireland. A whole three weeks dedicated to nothing but the experience of leaving the U.S. for really the first time ever and exploring this beautiful part of the world. This experience did so much, not only for my photography, but also my soul. Watching this, and having just been there, and now going through all the frames that I took over those three weeks, has brought back that joy, that spark. Much more than any piece of gear I could have purchased instead. As always, keep posting your journey, I will be watching. And perhaps inspired again, in the not to distant timeframe, to explore taking my camera.

I find it fantastic to realise the difference between a landscape photographer and a concert photographer in regards to ISO.
A concert photographer is happy if he can go as low as ISO 800. In fact, I have shot concerts on max ISO (6400 on the Sony-Nex5) just to get the artists stil instead of smeared across the sensor.

It took me along time to understand how he arrived at that. I shoot real estate as a profession (for 18 years). On the job, I have no choice over my subject matter, only how I shoot it. But every time I show up I have to shoot, even if it's uninspiring. This idea of having to "make due and work with what I have" has exercised muscles that come into play when I'm out in the landscape. I just always try things and take a lot of photos. 99% of these I don't show anyone, but they help me practice. But the extra nice aspect of that is: I now have a huge stockpile of old images that didn't seem to excite me at the time, but when I'm bored or stuck at home, I go through them and take time playing around with processing, and sometimes I find a way to make them work in ways I hadn't anticipated (b&w conversions, etc) and sometimes become my new favourites. This then can inform and improve the way I shoot. I know you're not necessarily looking for advice, but that thought might help somehow?

I was inspired to say something because you mentioned that in your slump you tend to blame external factors, and then felt things were turning around after shooting the tree, but that was just another lucky external factor. You’ve always wanted to slow down and produce less short vlogs and focus more on a longer videos. Maybe you could think about something along the lines of, Photographing British Coasts, or mountains or whatever you feel best about. Maybe you could try skip weekly vlogs over the next few weeks and move to a monthly upload, that way you could just spend more time photographing and filming with less pressure having it ready each week for upload. Maybe you could travel across 12 countries in Europe and putting sometimes together that way. I just think you’re a bit too hard on yourself, however I fully understand it’s also your business so the balance must be right.

When this happen I try to bring joy to my work, always trying to remember that joy comes from me and not from the actual work. It needs to be a reflection of you like Minor White said many years ago "When you approach something to photograph it, first be still with yourself until the object of your attention affirms your presence..."

Great video. Im glad to see I'm not the only one that goes through 'dry' patches. I find changing my focus sometimes helps, like not looking for 'grand' landscapes at the moment, but focusing on more intimate landscapes, leaves, fungi, etc. Lovely shots so dont be so hard on yourself.

Have you thought about moving to another country where it's vibrant and the landscape is a bit more lush and more opportunity locations? I figure since you have no kids it would be easier to do it now rather than later? I think all the downs you've had recently that it's a sign for big changes like a move.

      @gsum1000 13 дней назад

There aren't many landscapes as vibrant as Loch Maree or much of Scotland and Northern England. The variety of geology is endless and is compressed into a relatively small area. Inverewe Gardens is just down the road from Loch Maree, the very definition of the word lush. Our main problem in the UK is that there's so much to photograph that we're all running round like a dog with two d****.

I chose photography to aid in some healing that was hard won The best is soon to come. Let yourself rest too.

While watching your video, you flashed a book “Full frame”. I had purchased that book a while ago at a second hand bookstore and never got around to reading yet. After seeing it on your video, you inspired me to read it. I am part way through and really enjoying it. I always look forward to your videos! Keep up the good work.

I would love to spend an evening together, drinking tea and chatting about life and photography. Greetings from Vilnius, Lithuania!

I remember staying at a lovely B&B at the shore of Loch Maree when I visited Scotland for the first time in 2002. I had such wonderful hosts there that I will always remember. Unfortunately, they had to give up only few years later.
When I came home I missed one roll of film and it was the one with the pictures of the region around Loch Maree and Beinn Eighe National Reserve. Two weeks later I had a parcel with that missing roll in the postbox. Shoutout to the guy or girl at Sixt who found the roll in the rental car and sent it to me.

A tennet of David Noton is plan where you are going and what you intend since "if you fail to plan you are planning to fail". For the likes of most people, we can't have enough time to wait for the light (Another of David's aims) but you have shown that we can still make good enough photos for the majority of us.

I really enjoyed this episode, Thomas. You showcased the struggles that a photographer endures to capture the perfect shot. It was evident how your mood improved once you immersed yourself in the photography experience.
I believe this is a common trait among photographers; they might start their day without a clear idea of what they will photograph, but as they wander around, opportunities and ideas start to emerge, options become more varied, and with all of this, their mood improves, resulting in good photographs.
I liked all the photos you took, but my favorites are the one taken from the middle of the river's fork and the one with leaves on the river.

Thank you so much, I love watching your videos, they are inspirational and most of all relatable. It’s easy to think that everyone else is out there finding/making great photos and you’re not, so being reminded that it’s a process and enjoy yourself anyway is encouraging to just get out and keep trying.
your photos are beautiful and sharing the raw image is brilliant, every single time it impresses on me to get it right in camera and don’t rely on post to make a nice shot. Thanks for not being pretentious!

Just wanted to comment to feed the RUclips algorithm for you Thomas. You videos are great, your photos are absolutely amazing and inspiring! As a matter of fact you are the reason my son and I got into landscape photography. Thank you so much for creating videos for all of us. I know it is a lot of work and may feel thankless at times, but you are a huge inspiration to so, so many photographers all over the world. Thank you!!
