    The text in the picture at 11:45 reads: "The opening of the Gulf gas station (Eero's Auto) in Hanakkala year 1958. In the small picture, a family that visited the opening. Big picture taken by Anssi Mellblom."

    Film director Wim Wenders used a Makina 670 when he was doing location research for ‘Paris, Texas’, later publishing a great photobook of his shots. Shop windows, road signs, small US towns, etc. Definitely worth checking out.

    Thanks for the video. I am the proud owner of a Makina 67 (1st version): amazing camera, and so unique. I use it for travel mainly (should use it more often but I prefer shooting Leicas). I can see that having to record these episodes AND take good pictures, in a novelty place, in just one day is really a stretch, and I think you transmit (at least to me) the frustration of having to shoot a few rolls without having an understanding of the place and/or what you want to accomplish from a photography standpoint, in such a short amount of time. I feel you, and thank you for the great content.

    Such an interesting look at what it's like to travel an amazing country, unencumbered by the concern of someone inquiring into what you're doing and what your motivations are ... I wish the US was still like this. I know in many places, it is. But I always feel more at ease when I pull over to take photos outside of the US than I do in the US. Love the video!

    Great video. I had one a while back. But i found it too slow and fiddly. Also the light meter wiring tend to go . With the slowness and fiddly nature i figured i either use my mamiya 7II or my 4x5. The makina kind of sat in the middle but with no up side.

    I wish it, the video, was longer or s l o w e r..Geez! Speedy Gonzales! Never forget how big negative, really is! Film different from digital. Sensor sizes don't work as well. Forget all your numbers, I see images from tiny sensors to large! All images look about same! magic number 330 is all that's needed. I used Koni Omega 6x7! Way back! I have never carried big cameras on a daily basis. My Mamiyaflex TLR was enuff! Airlines, Toyota trucks, fashion. Digital would have been a godsend! I see quite a lot of Finland thru Ari's Rollei and 4x5 boxes. You are specific in wants! Some really nice stuff. Portraits of older mechanic simply superb! Earlier trip in UK. bravo speedy.

    Alas -- these things have gotten soooooo expensive 2nd hand !
    And as aa sidenote -- I looked up this finish seller, but have to say , they are damn expansive, i would rather say not even worth taking care in my opinion. A Mamiya 7 with the 65mm or 80mm lens for more than 5000 Euro --ridiculous really ! Well - NO SIR !!!!
    And btw "Quickly running out of light ..." in finish summer is not really easy🤣

    • @abrrault
      @abrrault Месяц назад +2

      I owned both at the same time and shoot them back to back on same scene multiple times, image quality wise they are both as sharp as 6x7 can get, colors of the Makina are a bit more muted compared to the Mamiya 7 with the 80mm that feels almost digital. I home scanned and I can get all my cameras look the same but the Makina is the only camera I could not! At 2.8 the Makina is spectacular, it's such a beautiful medium format analog style in terms of image rendition. In terms of user experience it's not as convenient as the Mamiya but it has more soul, it's a phenomenal camera to operate, unique. I sold it because I couldnt keep both and I had 3 lens for the Mamiya, but I regret, I will buy it again when I can.

    Hey Kyle, nice vid and the one at the store as well. I was really hoping to hear how you felt about shooting with the Makina? I have one, it's broken. Although the lens is one of the finest I have ever used, especially with great light on chrome, I found the camera a real challenge to use. Not ergonomically but creatively. At the time, when mine was still working, I found the focal length and the finder combo just really damn boring, lol. Curious what you're thoughts, are. I'm thinking about putting some money into mine to get if fixed... but really on the fence. Would love to hear from you. Cheers, d.

    I’m afraid I just don’t get your whole film thing, especially as those subjects you are shooting don’t actually be benefitting from being shot as analogy images. They are in fact totally unremarkable in so far as they could just as easily and successfully be shot digitally, for less cost and more creative control. Shooting film for films sake just seems a bit pointless. I would be convinced if the use of film was intrinsic to the final result of the image but that’s not the case.
