Haha thanks! that's my plan, hoping to make this a proper series in the new year and shine a spotlight on all the UK street photographers creating amazing work!
Just wonderful! Cal walks fast, is passionate, fun to shoot with, great eye. This is why we do it. The thrill, the curiosity, the energy. Nice one Tim 👌
As an Irish based photographer I can relate so much more to UK based photographers than US, so as much as I love Paulie B's Walkie Talkies, and I do, I do not relate to them and it's like another planet. This video shot just across the water from me with an incredibly talented and enthusiastic photographer has been a breath of fresh air, you asked the right questions but gave Cal plenty of scope to talk and share his methods. I also really connected with Cal as I am also absolutely hyper when out and walk fast, I've ADHD without an official diagnosis and it wouldn't surprise me if Cal was the same, constantly scanning and looking for the next great picture, which he gets many of. Great video Tim, please keep these going as they are a breath of fresh air!
Ah thank you for such a lovely comment, Dave! I’m mindful that I don’t just want to rip Paulie B off, so I’m trying to do it in my own way and to showcase the depth of great street photographers in the UK, at least that’s the plan anyway!
It’s an about people. It’s about us. Cal taps into what I love about street photography and it’s something that I think has been lost with a lot of what tries to make a claim to the genre. I feel that Cal would rather cut off his own hand than negate people with silhouettes, long lenses or other silliness. Humanity (and horses) doing what we do.
Another amazing episode, Tim. Can't tell you how much I get from these conversations. Thanks to Cal for the great insights into his philosophy and process. Brilliant work 🙌
Great one Tim - I have been following him (and you!) for a while. I'm completely with him on street photography, making, what might have been boring before, now interesting, and making you more observant. He has been doing street photography the same length of time as me - if only I could walk that fast!
Cal is my favourite London based street photographer by a fair bit! Though didn’t realised he had auto focus and that makes sense as his images are sharp! As for you, great video! I think Paulie B is good but he doesn’t ask great questions and that’s where you come in… great interview work! Looking forward to seeing more fella. J
Haha yeah man, Cal doesn’t mess about. Also he’s rapid! Took a lot of doing to keep up and not collide with a person or a double decker bus and keep him in frame 😂
Really glad I came across this because I found Cal just recently on instagram, and its interesting how much I agree or empathize with his ideas. Thanks for putting this together and all the editing, looking forward to seeing other photographers you interview :)
"You just have to want to take the photo." Wild. I get that. Very smart. Shooting events was a great bit of advice, too. Thanks, Tim. Very exciting to learn some of this.
@@timjamiesonphotos There is a huge street photography scene in the UK, loads of us would love to see others from different parts of the country and their workflow, inspirations etc.
i bet he would have enjoyed shooting the character behind him in the blue coat at 12:38 good face, i really do enjoy his work, feels very similar to how i shoot for characters
These little dogs near the driveway with (huge) cars - I think he could have gotten a really good (or at least better) photo if he had taken the shot near the ground looking up at the dogs and cars/houses in the background. I'm no expert but something I noticed - I myself am always trying to look for an unusual angle. All in all a great and interesting video! :) -- Photography has been my hobby more than 10 years but only now got interested in street photography.
I love his style and philosophy about how he views photography. I started with photography in the same period like he did and this with almost the same goals in mind! One small thing, that person on the photo with the dogs, made by Elliot Erwitt, is not a woman but a man :p .
Is your WALKIE TALKIE more enjoyable and informative than the US version, I don’t think so, it’s just better. Cal was very generous with his insights and processes, but you got him to ‘give’. Great video!
Thank you. I’m not trying to be better than Paulie B, I have mad respect for the guy! Just trying to do street interviews in my own way, but glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻
I struggle with street portraits. Cal makes some good points but his technique is too much like Bruce Gilden for my taste. I don't want to get that far into someone else's space bubble.
I'm really not sure this kind of frantic photography brings anything new nor worthwhile to our humanity nor to art. I mean it's just paparazzi work for the masses.
@ i'm not an expert, my culture of photography history is still very limited. But I decidely prefer when the photographer has established an actual human connection with his subject. This practice is just rude and btw this is strickly illegal in countries like France and Germany...
Sounds like you don’t like or appreciate street photography then which is fine but if that’s the case then this channel isn’t for you! (Photographing people in public is not illegal in France or Germany)
That’s the great thing about street photography, you don’t need to do anything a certain way. If you don’t like it, then no problem, this channel isn’t for you
Pretty hard to nail focus with a manual focus camera in the autumn winter light. Critical focusing while moving fast at 3.5 is probably going to be less accurate than auto focus
Haha London isn't exactly polite and well behaved. But regardless, Cal doesn't change his approach when he photographs in New York and he still has all his teeth. You clearly didn't watch the whole video, nor do you know much about the street photography community in the States if you think that's the case!

Tim you need to do this more often, we need a UK Walkie Talkie, and you seem to be the one to do it if this is anything to go by.

Ah thanks so much Mike!
Paulie B effect is crazy love it
He’s done so much for the street photography community it’s wild. I’d love to do a video like this of him one day, turn the tables.

As I'm watching I'm wondering if Cal ever stops (or slows!) for a moment?! I've a knackered knee and am wincing as I watch😂
@@andycakebread7663Mate he’s rapid! It was all I could do to keep him in frame while trying not to get run over/smash into someone 😅

such a good interview

Thanks once again for this interview. Verry good stuff, thank you for the work you've put in and thanks to Cal Holland for his sharing.
Ah my pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it, Cal is great
Been following Cal on instagram for a little while now. Amazing work, cool to see his process!
Glad you enjoyed the vid!
Fantastic - great to hear more about Cal’s processes
Thanks man!
Pretend to clean the viewfinder: brilliant 🤩 This video was so very wonderful
Haha I honestly thought that was great, I’d never thought of that before! Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻
Timing is all! Love the discussion about shoes, horses, shoes and then walking right past Schuh 😂👍 - enjoyed this walk around and chat very much Tim
Haha thanks, Andy!
I love the way he handles his camera because I do the same 😊
Me three!
What a great photographer bud!
Loved the video and especially getting to know his philosophy,
Great interview of a brilliant photographer.

What a lovely man. And clear as a bell. / Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love it!!....talking about taking images of shoes, at the same time walking past the shop 'Schuh' (3.14)

since paulie B I don't think we can get enough of these
I think it’s Paulie B 😂 - but I agree!

Glad you’re enjoying it! 🙏🏻
Very enjoyable video - I bet Cal walks quite a few 1000 steps each time he's out walking
Thanks! Yeah he’s rapid
Great video! Did I miss what equipment he uses, his favorite focal length and why?
Thanks! Equipment is in the video description, I didn’t include the reason for shooting 35 in the edit!
@ thanks, I thought it was the Hexar but I had actually never seen anyone use it.
Amazing video again!
Thank you!
SO GOOD.

great vid. cal is awesome
Thanks!

3:12 just SCHUH't anything. While just talking about shoes 👟.
Perfect timing.. 😅

It’s not for everyone!
I wonder if he has ever considered using a wrist strap instead of a neck strap?
He usually shoots with two cameras, so has a short and long strap. (For this video the other camera was in his bag)
@@timjamiesonphotos That explains it! Thanks!
Scary to confront the wrong person
Yeah but you pick your battles, not like you’re gonna bang a shot right in the face of a drug dealer for example

I'm really not sure this kind of frantic photography brings anything new nor worthwhile to our humanity nor to art. I mean it's just paparazzi work for the masses.
What kind of photography, in your expert opinion, does then?
These photographers are just addicted to sensational scenes that they catch relying on repetitives and ultimately boring techniques...
@ i'm not an expert, my culture of photography history is still very limited. But I decidely prefer when the photographer has established an actual human connection with his subject. This practice is just rude and btw this is strickly illegal in countries like France and Germany...

@ it is illegal to publish without consent. And I do appreciate it, when it's done the right way.
Naahh not my thing. You need to give people space. I find this way of taking pictures disrespectful.

Good way to not miss focus is not use a auto-focus camera.

Try that in a big American city and you will be picking camera gear out of your teeth. ( or worse ). But, perhaps well deserved ???
