      Well, since you're asking, if you're willing to go outside your comfort zone a little bit,
      there is a roguelike called The Void Rain Upon Her Heart where you bring love to big scary monsters.
      It is surprisingly wholesome, the characters are likeable and it has an interesting take on meta progression and keep unfolding in many ways.
      It's also a passion project made by a single person.
      Alternatively, if you like to blow up stuff, there is a platformer called Copy Kitty where you copy and combine your opponents powers,
      meaning that you have access to a bunch of attack through the game. There is also many cool boss battles through the game.

    Great video man, this is exactly how I felt about the game. Probably the best looking game I’ve ever played and coolest world. (Love the naussica vibes)
    And it was backed up by an incredibly great feeling combat system/ gameplay. For some reason I feel like there’s a shortage of games that combine melee and ranged combat in such a smooth and seems less way as this game does. The two elements are very simple on their own but the way it requires you so switch between them and utilize both fully is so engaging. I also feel similarly weird about the upcoming sequel as it is moving away from so many things that make the first game special: 2D combat, pixel art, handcrafted world, not being a rougelike. Still cautiously exited to play it but idk.

    I’ve bought this game twice, once on my phone (controls were surprisingly pretty solid) and on ps4. Both times it controlled great, and the combat felt amazing. The music is also just *so damn GOOD*
    Also: the 2 swing combo of the Hanged man (his song is called the last general, I honestly don’t remember where I got his name from) feels like it’s in time with the music, so I count the beats to line up his next attack, eventually it changes since it’s only his starting swings that are in time, but it feels really nice.

    Woah, another crab treasure for terrible combat crazy take and pacific drive for terrible progression is another crazy take. Look I am all for praising Hyper Light Drifter but no need for the strays being caught by other games.

    • @EljayIsHere
      @EljayIsHere  3 месяца назад +11

      Hahaha hey, it's just my opinion, but I do try to be objective, for example, Crab Treasure is fun, it's hilarious, clever, and you can sink hours into it, but it's a souls game at its core, and that raises a bunch of expectations.
      When you look at it through that lens, the combat actually is really rough, its clunky, hit boxes are weird, telegraphing, pacing, etc of yours and enemies attacks are off.
      Enemies get stuck on terrain, the camera lock on spins wildly, tilts randomly, gets itself turned around.
      Does this mean its a bad game? Absolutely not, but it's clear the devs cared FAR more about the dialogue and humour of the game, and when you play it for that and a silly good time, it is really fun.
      Pacific Drive, I can't really defend, I had a terrible time, I played it start to finish, and the progression of the car felt pretty boring, upgrades weren't super impactful to the gameplay, every side panel and door upgrade just felt like adding more health, the extra fuel cans, battery, or storage felt pointless because I never ran out in the first place, etc.
      But the worst part was sitting at that tech tree, unlocking a new skill, being kicked out of the tech tree with a slow animation, waiting for a big tube to fire out, picking it up, watching a slow animation of reading a blue print, then a slow animation to go back into the tech tree, and repeating that was so mind numbing.
      Don't get me wrong, I know some people love that stuff, not saying they're wrong or shouldn't, I just didn't enjoy those aspects of those games for those reasons, and if people disagree, that's totally cool.
      That said, holy shit I hope the Undetale fans don't find this video hahahaha

    • @captainblastems3367
      @captainblastems3367 3 месяца назад +2

      @@EljayIsHere Undertale opinion is understandable, all I was saying is its a shame that I cant find a video on this site praising a game for being good while shooting down other games.
      Its like if I wanted to do a review on pizza but before I got to the pizza I have to mention how much I hate burgers. (I also understand it helps get across that Hyper Light Drifter does everything correctly)
      I understand its your opinion and I wasn't taking away from how you feel about it rather just expressing displeasure on how frequently its the norm to compare and contrast other games to put another up.

    • @EljayIsHere
      @EljayIsHere  3 месяца назад +4

      Hey, I totally get that!
      To give some clarification, I think it's really important to remember a game having flaws isn't a bad thing, that's really the point I was trying to make with that segment.
      Those are 3 incredibly popular games, they do things amazingly well, but they aren't perfect.
      As someone who absolutely loves Wizard of legend, people often say, "the map design sucks, its awful, sure, the combat is amazing, but god those maps are boring, unlike Barony! Those map designs are brilliant!"
      And, I go, "Holy shit yeah I totally get that, if I want a game with lots of diversity in level design, I better get on Barony!"
      It doesn't take away from my love of one game, I know it has strengths and weaknesses, and comparing those things lets us understand what we value as players. Some people want tight clean combat in their souls games, others want a cute talking crab to commit tax evasion hahaha both are equal.

    I bought hyper light drifter as the first game I actually wanna finish the main story a few weeks ago. It is a brilliant game. Once you get past the first hour with no coins to buy upgrades and didn’t waste the coins on something not fun, the game starts to be fun. You are basically clearing are and area and getting coins to upgrade every so often. There is a very high skill ceiling, but the (first) bosses are beatable by trying over and over again for dozens of times until you find the strategy to defeat it and get a cool new gun which continues the loop. My favourite game so far.

    Took me 13 hrs across the span of a month to beat this game, however I really do love it and the game I'm currently making is inspired quite heavily by it. I gotta say, just seeing all the dead colossal beings throughout the world was my favourite part but I'm taking inspiration from the game's combat, it's very fair yet still challenging but I can't help but wonder what it would be like if it was made to be more fluid, the movement being stopped every time you attack posed as my greatest challenge, It's probably one of the most important parts of HLD's combat so I don't want to cut it out, I have some ideas I'm yet to test. But yeah, this game is just a good vibe, I want to go back and do all the secrets, from what I've seen the secrets in this game is a whole thing in and of itself that is worth doing but I don't know for sure as I try to avoid spoilers of puzzles in games

    Hyper Light Drifter "ruined" a lot of games of this type for me, just as DMC 5 ruined a lot of hack and slash/action games for me.
    I was following an isometric game with similar combat, and I was pretty excited! But then they recently revealed that the game will have voice acting.......... and I figured out that it is not good after listening to it lol. Ambience shattered, I'm so picky now that just one aspect like that gets me to unwishlist and forget about a game. There are too many options to not be picky 🤷🏽‍♂️.

    As much as I love Hyper Light Drifter, I don't like the combat. like it feels good at times, but when all of your defensive options are tied to a small little bar thats kinda hard to see, it makes the game feel slow and tedious, especially when you have to just kinda sit around while you wait for your stamina to recharge (It takes like 10 seconds but it feels like years)
    Personally I find Unsighted's combat to be better. You still have stamina, but its tied to attacking and movement. Your Parry can be used to deflect projectiles and stun melee attackers, (only if you get it perfect though), which leads to some very fun scenarios where your low on stamina, parrying attacks, and then regenerating just enough stamina to roll away to a safe distance to where you can unload on your enemies with a ranged weapon (SPEAKING OF: Ranged weapons being tied to an active reload system like in Gears of War is a Huuuuuuuge plus over regenerating ammo through melee attacks. The guns don't deal nearly as much damadge as the melee weapons but you never have to worry about going into the frey only to find you have no bullets to quickly snipe that one annoying distant/problem enemy)
    No shade to Drifter though, Game is God tier either way and I still love it to death.

    • @EljayIsHere
      @EljayIsHere  3 месяца назад

      You know what’s funny, I never even realised I had a stamina bar until the very end of the game.
      Never ran out, never noticed, never cared lol
      That’s one of the reasons I thought the combat was so smooth, the rhythm and reacting to enemies taught me to be thoughtful and careful so I never did enough mashing to notice my stamina.

  • @Mefrius
    @Mefrius 3 месяца назад

    Game's progression felt broken for me. Just let me set up and explain. Probably every skill you can buy is an optional, meaning game was design to be beaten without it. World's Structure is not good (not talking about the levels themself). To put it simply: because first 3 zones can be beaten in any order therefore they are design as equally hard, because when exploring a zone you get money and buy upgrades, because you also as a player are getting better at the game, BECAUSE of all of that, difficulty is fucked up. Each next zone, each boss is easier than the last one. Also, why player can go to any 3 out of 4 zones at beginning? It's not like game is a metroidvania, but it is no a linear game. So it's not one or another, but because of that there are problems. Also some skills you can buy, nullify any challenge/difficulty of some rooms or attacks. That's way Hyper Light Drifter is a ruined potential (in terms of combat. Everything else is very good).
