A beginner playing on easy difficulty is peak FTL. It eventually devolves into an expert playing on hard difficulty where the most eventful concern is "will I lose 1 or 2 hit points this sector?". You eventually reach the point where you go through entire sectors without taking damage and in many fights, even on hard difficulty, it's not even possible to take damage even if you walk away from your computer and leave the battle running.
Hard difficulty isn't outstandingly more difficult than easy you just have to sell your moral compass for scrap to buy hacking at the first opportunity.
I've been playing this game on and off for many years, getting to the last ship is pretty easy and was never able to kill it even with hundreds of tries.
the flagship makes the game completely different from all previous fights, I found myself spending most of the mid-game preparing countermeasures to deal with it after my first few runs. Targeting a main weapons system like you do with most ships doesn't work since they're so spread out, meaning you need to prioritize whatever gives you the most issues. I find the missile system to be a safe bet most of the time since I usually roll up to the flagship with maxed shields and decent evasion to survive the barrage of ions and lasers, though with good cloaking you might have other priorities. Definitely make disabling whatever special room the ship has -- drones, teleporter or cloaking -- a top priority early on even if it means you eat some missiles and hope like hell it doesn't wreck your weapons bay. As long as you have enough sustained fire to keep the shields, missiles and the gimmick room all damaged at once you should be fine. The best defense is a good offense, you're screwed the moment it starts its full barrage

FTL is roguelike equivalent of Battle Brothers. It is a game of loosing and dying. Easiest difficulty in both these games should be called "you loose anyway", but unlike harder difficulties you may actually falsely believe that there is other outcome possible.

I purchased in 2014. Loved this game with 100+hrs. Been looking for something to play again and what a great idea!! Wished so much for an expansion of some kind.
i find it very hard to get into because I never know if I am playing it 'right'. With games like Splunkey or Issac, I know I am wrong if I die, but for FTL, I never know until the moment of game over.
I have such a crazy history with this game... from hearing about it on online forums, pirating it and not knowing how to play, watching playthroughs and learning how to actually play, buying the game and resetting my progress, playing with my friends by my side so it turns into one big Star Trek adventure evening... All culminating in last year when I finally got the last three achievements that seemed to far out of my grasp. oh look, it seems that its still installed for some reason. I guess another round for old time's sake wouldn't kill me...
Every time I get bored with a modern Roguelike, I go back to playing a traditional Roguelike, reminding me of how fast, elegant, simple and straightforward a roguelike can be!
I've been playing FTL for a few days now and about 2 days ago I was able to defeat the flagship*. (On easy) I currently have 3 ships with at the moment but I'm trying to unlock more. But it's fun to use the stealth cruiser. (Although getting the shields quickly is definitely recommended cause drones are annoying cause I gotta charge my Glave beam and my cloak only lasts for a few seconds at Level 2.
There is one game that's kind of like FTL, in that it's also about ship-to-ship combat, where you're fighting against a rebel fleet across a web of encounter nodes, where you can buy fuel, missiles and upgrades to your ships and ultimately reach the final destination or die (over and over again) trying. It's called HighFleet. You can ask Sseth for more details, but TL;DR: it's good.
love FTL and into the breach. Still hoping to se another banger from these guys in the future. Still trying to complete first mission since i deny lowering the difficulty from standar.
Beat the game *ONCE* on easy and it was the most satisfying thing ever. It’s a great game and I suck at it - maybe I’ll pick it up again sometime soon.
The trouble with FTL is that there's some specific strategies which most people seem to consider almost manatory if you actually want to complete the game, sort of invalidating all the customization you can supposedly do.
There are definitely optimal builds that make the game easy, but veterans can equally beat the game with meme builds. Not everything is strictly speaking _good,_ but meme builds can be a fun change to break up the monotony of meta builds. Since it's not a competition, you don't have to adhere to the meta.
Yep, my thoughts as well With the variety the game offers, only playing one play style because “it’s easier” isn’t the games fault, I’ve beaten it with most strategies, and rarely repeat one back to back because what’s the point of that hahaha
I think that's partially true. I did get all of the achievements, but I think certain builds absolutely felt, if not "mandatory," then far and away more fun for completing the game with, especially on the final levels (namely being able to bypass shields and quickly trap and defeat enemy crew members without having to depend on lasers and traditional firepower, let alone finite missile stockpiles).
lol have you managed to beat the game on higher difficulties? the flagship absolutely SUCKS on hard mode. the missile bay gets connected to main ship so I can't just tp my mantis crew in and have it be dealt with forever + basically everything is buffed even more. also pro tip: if you ever find a ship that doesn't have missiles and it's weapons are too weak to breach your shield layers - just sit there and let your crew train on evasion/shield recharge. this has saved so many runs for me and is basically the only way I'm able to get close the flagship on normal/hard lmao.
I've done a bunch of normal runs, but honestly my problem is I never try hahaha Like, in a game like Barony, HLD, Loop Hero, etc I get really into the min max, trying to win. But FTL is just so fun to do stupid stuff, or play the narrative card rather than the optimised choice hahaha So I lose crew to looking at giant Zoltan Monoliths for example hahaha
There was attempt to spiritually success or something like that. Shortest Trip To Earth. It players little more different, little more ""complex"". It's a good game and all, can cause some sleep deprivation... But in the end, it's got nothing on FTL.
I played a pirated version my friend had, then i got it on steam for like 2 bucks. Still one of the best games ive played to date. Also why is the hornet theme in the background?
The only thing that I'm quitting roguelikes it doesn't really respect the player's time. There are times you need to do personal stuff but the game cannot be paused or quit for a moment
@@EljayIsHere At first it's scary however I prefer hard now as on easy/med I can get every upgrade every game where as on hard you rarely get all upgrades. Cosmoteer: Starship Architect & Commander (currently EA) is probably the closest and greatest FTL hit. I even dare to say there are some elements that suppress the FTL but fall short in others.
Try out "Space Order Mine"... besides the stupid name, it's a cross between FTL, mine sweeper and inventory tetris... not super deep but good for quick runs to see what kind of build you end up with. Cheap and pretty fun.

hahaha yeah, thats like 99% of the jokes in this video, putting energy into what you think is good but weirdly doors and oxygen are OP
@EljayIsHere doors yeah, oxygen is eh. If your life bay gets smoked early battle you can normally finish before it becomes a big problem unless they use fire weapons or something.
Level 2 oxygen is an absolute must have before the boss though because if they send the hack drone to it, you are completely effed without it.
Multiverse mod has consumed endless hours of my time trying to unlock all those ships =w=
People keep recommending it to me! I might have to install it… if I can kick this Noita addiction hahaha
@@EljayIsHere After installing it I could never go back to normal ftl. It expands on so many game mechanics and adds a ton of depth and a dizzying amount of ships. Plus a lot of really good lore and species that fit right into the universe of the game :3
FTL is roguelike equivalent of Battle Brothers. It is a game of loosing and dying. Easiest difficulty in both these games should be called "you loose anyway", but unlike harder difficulties you may actually falsely believe that there is other outcome possible.
FTL aka oxygen is luxury. You get to breath when i say you get to breath
😂😂
I wanted to play FTL at the time it was new (2012 or so?) But i also wanted minecraft. I needed to make a decision at the time. And i didnt hyperfocus on playing ftl in my teenage years, thats all I can say about that 😂 maybe now is the time to try it.
Every video by you, a new title gets added to my steam wishlist 😂
It’s totally worth it, at least if you like the sortve things I show in the video hahaha
i feel the same things you have said about FTL, it is one of my favoruite games and i agree at the nebula part, i will never go to nebula :), but it finds me
I purchased in 2014.
2 too-close-star jumps in a row is fucking wild bro💀
I have such a crazy history with this game... from hearing about it on online forums, pirating it and not knowing how to play, watching playthroughs and learning how to actually play, buying the game and resetting my progress, playing with my friends by my side so it turns into one big Star Trek adventure evening... All culminating in last year when I finally got the last three achievements that seemed to far out of my grasp.
oh look, it seems that its still installed for some reason. I guess another round for old time's sake wouldn't kill me...
Goodbye another 200 hours hahaha
Every time I get bored with a modern Roguelike, I go back to playing a traditional Roguelike, reminding me of how fast, elegant, simple and straightforward a roguelike can be!
Trailblazers: Into the March is looking sick, its like FTL mixed with cosmoteer
Great vid, FTL is an old favourite of mine. There isn't much else like it
I know nothing of this game, but I really enjoyed this video. Well done
Glad you enjoyed! :)
I've been playing FTL for a few days now and about 2 days ago I was able to defeat the flagship*. (On easy)
I currently have 3 ships with at the moment but I'm trying to unlock more. But it's fun to use the stealth cruiser. (Although getting the shields quickly is definitely recommended cause drones are annoying cause I gotta charge my Glave beam and my cloak only lasts for a few seconds at Level 2.
Dude, you're in for such a fun journey!
Agreed.
So Armored Core Rogue like with spaceships? Sounds awesome actually!
FTL is FANTASTIC. I'm really surprised that there aren't any alternatives yet.
I NEED THIS TO BLOW UP MORE AND I NEED YT TO PUT YOUR CHANNEL IN MY FYP ALREADY
Hahaha thanks
love FTL and into the breach. Still hoping to se another banger from these guys in the future. Still trying to complete first mission since i deny lowering the difficulty from standar.
Lmao I love the commitment
Until now I'm still not unlocking any other ships except the first two ships from the tutorial. I don't know if it's me or the game :)
Never seen or had that happen, odd
There are definitely optimal builds that make the game easy, but veterans can equally beat the game with meme builds. Not everything is strictly speaking _good,_ but meme builds can be a fun change to break up the monotony of meta builds. Since it's not a competition, you don't have to adhere to the meta.
Yep, my thoughts as well
With the variety the game offers, only playing one play style because “it’s easier” isn’t the games fault, I’ve beaten it with most strategies, and rarely repeat one back to back because what’s the point of that hahaha
I'm currently having a BLAST playing Breachway's demo they have up currently, looks promising
I'll have a look!
Don't forget the mods. Me personally, I like playing as a space station. Fight pirates, trade a lot, its kinda fun.
Wait that’s a thing?? what’s the mod name?
_I love the smell of Fire Beam in the mornin'_
lol have you managed to beat the game on higher difficulties? the flagship absolutely SUCKS on hard mode. the missile bay gets connected to main ship so I can't just tp my mantis crew in and have it be dealt with forever + basically everything is buffed even more.
also pro tip: if you ever find a ship that doesn't have missiles and it's weapons are too weak to breach your shield layers - just sit there and let your crew train on evasion/shield recharge. this has saved so many runs for me and is basically the only way I'm able to get close the flagship on normal/hard lmao.
I've done a bunch of normal runs, but honestly my problem is I never try hahaha
Like, in a game like Barony, HLD, Loop Hero, etc I get really into the min max, trying to win.
But FTL is just so fun to do stupid stuff, or play the narrative card rather than the optimised choice hahaha
So I lose crew to looking at giant Zoltan Monoliths for example hahaha
There are 2 newer pirate themed games similar to FTL we have Reclaim the Sea and Seablip, Reclaim the Sea is really good
I’ve been recommended SeaBlip a lot, is it good?
this is a criminally underrated video
What are you talking about? nebulas are the best choise, enemy will go slower, meaning you'll have more time to explore.
To invoke terror
@@EljayIsHere great music taste. HK is one of my favorite games as well.
You definitely encapsulated the essence that is "playing FTL". Love it, hate it, it's one of the best of all time.
Now go play Into The Breach...
The only thing that I'm quitting roguelikes it doesn't really respect the player's time. There are times you need to do personal stuff but the game cannot be paused or quit for a moment
FTL allows pausing and quitting to come back later :)
Great review summed up FTL perfectly! I play it on hard BTW ;)
Multiverse is a must have mod for FTL
HARD? You’re amazing hahaha
@@EljayIsHere At first it's scary however I prefer hard now as on easy/med I can get every upgrade every game where as on hard you rarely get all upgrades.
Makes the game even more fun imo when you know you cant have it all and adds that extra layer of tactics.
ps You not getting preigniters cracked me up as they are the holy grail in FTL hahaha
The level of balance in FTL is truly impeccable.
All I want is someone to Frankenstein together FTL and an old school rpg
The soundtrack to this game brings me peace.
2010s was such an amazing era of games......
Great video! I love FTL!
Ahh, yes… the most powerful weapon on the ship. Doors.
Don’t mess with doors.
Cosmoteer: Starship Architect & Commander (currently EA) is probably the closest and greatest FTL hit. I even dare to say there are some elements that suppress the FTL but fall short in others.
bought this game randomly when i was 8 still play it a decade later
*Enters Nebula*
"Do you like slugs in your head?"
Try out "Space Order Mine"... besides the stupid name, it's a cross between FTL, mine sweeper and inventory tetris... not super deep but good for quick runs to see what kind of build you end up with. Cheap and pretty fun.
"Well... Until i land in a fucking nebula."
True AND real.
welcome home brother
I recently started to play the game again too, love it
and then if somehow normal FTL is getting too easy or boring, try one of the overhaul mods! Like the Multiverse mod which makes it Roguelite x10
I never played FTL, but it's one of my favourite games. In fact, my videogame with most hours played is one that Sleeper Service developed after finding success with FTL: Captain's Edition all those years back. It's also a roguelike, but a Metal Gear Solid V one. It's called Swirl W@tch. Thanks for helpig keep this awesome (and source-moddable!) game alive!
this was definitely worth an afternoon but im scratching my head at how someone could play this for a decade lol
FTL music still ranks in the top 5 in game music for me even after all these years.
its been a good ru...NOT ANOTHER FCKING NEBULA
Never played it but want to. Absolutely love into the breach
FTL final boss was so tough that you have to beat it a few times
this game and starsector are for me the best space rpg games
I'm slowly learning that the games Eljay loves the most are the ones that hate him the most 😂
It's funny cause i love nebulas. As long you have lots of Fuel they are the best places to farm scrap.
I just never buy enough engine energy hahaha
So when they cut mine in half in events I pretend it’s the games fault
I have to agree, FTL is one of the greatest games ever made. In fact, I would call it the best rogue-like of all time, if it wasn't for Into the Breach; a game made by the same studio that I like more lol.
Music in FTL is amazing
There are many awesome roguelike games out there, since you a big FTL fan, why not check out Crying Suns?! Promise you will have a blast!!
If you want a spiritual successor for this game, "Void War" is probably the closest thing you will ever get.
