@@hardsam68 I’m sure it had a lot to do with it. Roger was in great form the entire tournament in fact, many people picked Federer as the favorite against Rafa in the final. In this match, there was still an ounce of belief in Federer that he knew if he plays his best, nobody can beat him, not even Nadal. This match was the true changing of the guard because there were no excuses, he’s fully recovered from his so called “mono” that hampered him in 2008 (which I think is not true) and Nadal beat him on a neutral surface.
The two greatest no question. But Nadal's dominance on clay is really unmatched and will never be replicated in tennis history. Fed, my fave, will go down as the greatest should he win his 20th GS, which I expect him to do next year, barring injuries of course. Sad to see Nadal and Fed grow old! The tennis world will miss them, as will the history books.
I think Nadal leads to Federer for a simple reason - Nadal is relatively stronger at Grass compared to Federer at Clay! Obviously on Hard courts, its been a balanced fight. Great rivalry!
That's true, but Nadal found a tactic that works. He avoided Roger's forehand as much as possible. Federer's backhand really only became great in his early 30's. It was the weakest part of his game. I'm a Roger fan and noticed this pattern pretty early on in the rivalry. It got to the point where Roger was running around the ball to put himself in position to hit forehands out of desperation, which opened up the court for Nadal to finish the point.
I beg to disagree. Fed's record on clay is better than Nadal's on grass. Nadal has the overall lead just cause they met very often on clay where Federer could often reach the final, but Nadal has only beaten Fed once on grass in 2008 (Twas a great match in Wimbly final but it was the only time). Fed has beaten Nadal twice on clay. Great rivalry anyway !
@@emiliodelcanto4179 Yeah and there's nothing cheap about it. That's just tennis. You exploit the weaknesses of the opponent. Nadal was just more well rounded overall.
This shows that Federer is human and felt the pressure- really interesting to see that most of the match points he faced, he tended to hit them out or in the net, very few were won off Rafa's racquet
It took 13 years Federer to dominate Nadal after years of Nadals controlling the rivalry for a decade! Nadal revealed at the time that Federer is a human despite, dominating the rest of the field in 2004-2007 and Djokovic later on proved it too.

@@commondirtbagz7130 a better fudge of the head to head record is to omit clay matches they've played, federer leads Nadal 14-10 on hard and grass court matches, leading credibility to the fact Federer is a better multi -surface player than Nadal, Nadal being totally and utterly dominant on clay only...
Its crazy we practically see Nadal's whole process of maturing from a brash young kid into adulthood but all the while Federer looks unchanged through the years ..(O.o)
How much Nadal's shots used to loop up and bounce high in those early days!! Those head high balls to Roger's backhand gave him no attacking power off that wing. His footwork was more explosive, and he was a ball retrieving BEAST, a human equivalent of a brick wall on the other side. The only reason why Federer didn't get obliterated even sooner was because of his own athleticism and his serve. Federer on the other hand was always at a power disadvantage and locked up on the backhand, giving Nadal full control over the middle of the court inside the baseline, until the new racket came along. This year he's been hitting cannons on both wings and picking the ball incredibly early - now he's the one stepping into the court. Nadal now seems to have no idea what to do (except maybe still on clay). But both of them were cheetahs around the court 10 years ago. They have slowed down half a step since then, and lost a lot of hair ....
Buddy rod laver had the court sped up to be faster is why. Rafa can’t beat Roger on fast courts, it’s his worst surface. Watch the 09 final Australian is way slow like the us open now. If they played at the Us open rafa would beat him.
23-10 It is astonishing that there was a time when there was such a difference. Rafa's perfection is astonishing, as he has been winning since he was a teenager against Roger at his peak. It is also important to note Roger's technique, which has greatly improved h2h from that point. The h2h since 2015 includes Roger's growth as well as Rafa's decline as reasons, but still this growth play is probably rare in history.

Djokovic vs. Nadal had the most brutal rallies and matches, but imo Federer vs. Nadal was the most beautiful. The two had such contrasting styles of play. Will never see such a rivalry again.
after 2008 they only met 6 times on clay and 17 times on hard courts/grass courts. From 2008-present Nadal leads their head to head STILL 12-11 and 12-6 during Federer’s prime. Nadal is better period.
It's crazy how Fed completely flipped the script on Nadal the last 2 years, after being dominated by him his entire career he's now beaten him with relative ease the last 5 times they've matched up
dayum...this should be viewed as a tribute to their great rivalry....not spark a fan war.....C'mon people, it's been over a decade now, can't we stop this bickering already. If anything, this season has shown just how special they both are and how much they respect each other. Why can't we do the same?
Maybe, but all parties involved seemed pretty sure. And even if it had been close to being in, that match was such a slaughter that I wouldn't be surprised if Fed just wanted it to be over.
Crazy how from Basel 2015 Federer went 6-1 against Nadal. Nadal will always be the best on clay but it’s a testament to how devastating Federer is at his peak performance level.
Nope, it is all about pure math and probability of winning a point in the case of RF vs RN it maybe 50/50 50% 0.5 1/2 and... such scores are normal variance and easy to simulate using Monte Carlo simulation of milions of tennis matches.
If their now 40 hth matches had been split evenly across the four surfaces (10 on clay, 10 on grass etc) the record would be 20:20. Clay: Fed 1:9 Nadal; Grass: Fed 7:3 Nadal; Outdoor Hard: Fed 4:6 Nadal; Indoors: Fed 8:2 Nadal
2013 and 2017 were very one sided years. Nadal completely owned Federer in 2013 with wins in Rome, Indian Wells, Cincinnati, ATP World Tour Finals along with a straight sets win at 2014 Australian Open... This year Federer dominated Nadal.
People say how devastating the Nadal loss in the AO this year was but honestly Federer losing to Nadal in Wimbledon is the most damning loss of them all. Federer never beat Nadal at the French while Roger lost at his kingdom of Wimbledon. Just my two cents but they're both the two greatest players atm but Djokovic could definitely make a stake for the throne.
Michael Riechmann Despite Djokovic won against both of them and also the four Grand Slams at the same time, I think he never will be considered in the debate. Roger first, Nadal second.
I agree, Federer in his prime losing to Nadal at Wimbledon is the most damning loss of them all. Sure Djokovic beat Fed at Wimbledon but that wasnt until Fed was 33 years old and had lost to bums like Tsonga and Stakhovsky. Fed would have won 7 Wimbledons in a row if not for that 9-7 in the 5th.
interesting that federer as he got older waaay out of his prime managed get a few more wins in the rivalry. I think for two main reasons: his backhand improved later in his career and second because he skipped more on the clay. i think if he had skipped more clay matches from the beginning their rivalry would be almost even. but ofc nadal deserves all the respect for beeing the best clay courter of all times so it should reflect in the rivalry also! and to be fair nadal has some important wins over fed on hard and grass.

The thing is when Federer is playing "bad" he is still better than 99% of the tour... so he still gets far enough into tournaments for Rafa to beat him. When Rafa is playing bad well...
The most objective way to measure who is better is to look at the statistics on the ATP site, and then form your opinion. -Federer has 310 weeks at number one, and Rafa has 209 weeks at number one. -In their H2H, Federer leads on grass 3-1 and hard court 11-9, and Rafa leads on clay 14-2. -On grass, Federer has 19 titles and Rafa has 4 titles. -On hard court, Federer has 71 titles and Rafa has 22 titles. -On clay, Federer has 11 titles and Rafa has 59 titles. Based on these statistics, one can objectively conclude that as of now Federer is the better grass court player, the slightly better hard court player, and Rafa is the by far the better clay court player. From there, you can make arguments that maybe Federer or Rafa was injured during certain periods or that certain wins were more significant, but you have to start with the facts first rather than leading with opinion.
15 times they've played each other on clay (13-2 for Nadal). Only 4 times played on grass (3-1 for Federer). Now I understand why its 25-15 in favor of Nadal...
@@adityagouravdas929Federer does have more weeks at number 1 and also 6 WTF and more versatility on two surfaces hard and grass. Djokovic is better or greater than both though
Great video. As we have all seen this year, a lot of the H2H reason is due to Rafa’s supernatural clay court play and the mental effects that has caused in their matchup. That said, as Roger said himself he can’t win them all against Rafa but if (there are no ifs, I know..) the clay courts wouldn’t have affected their rivalry that much, I believe Roger would have had around a 2/1 winning ratio in non-clay matches. Now it’s 1.3/1 (since winning the last 5) on grass/hardcourt/indoors and Roger himself has pointed out how much it has helped not playing him on clay.
Of course he didn’t listen to me. For James, one world title was enough. He had proved what he needed to prove, to himself, and anyone who doubted him and 2 years later he retired. I like 12:45 - 14:05 part. Still a LOOT of bitterness here. But at last Federer found a way on Nadal :) and Nadal I guess cannot longer exploit Federer's backhand. And 15-23 is not 10-23 or 1-6 (especially when we exclude clay court matches and then we have 13-10 for Federer :) ). Moreover it is possible that Federer will continue to skip the clay court part season, so it can help Federer make their h2h even more even.
If you want to exclude the clay, exclude the indoors too. That would still make Nadal more dominant on the h2h. He leads on outdoor hard courts as well. Both of them have their specific surface. For Fed is super fast low bouncing hard or grass. For Nadal is either clay or high bouncing medium speed outdoor hard court. Both are legends.
Well, think this way. If Roger played on clay the same level of Pete Sampras, one of the greats of the Open Era, he would have only faced Nadal a couple of times on that surface, max, and therefore would be leading the total H2H. So the paradox is that Federer is good enough on clay to make a bunch of SF and F against Nadal but not good enough to win them, which tilts the H2H against him.
How beautifully Rafa avoided fed from 2004-2008 in US open and Aus open losing in 3rd 4th rounds and now in grass since 2011 wimbledon. Hasnt reached a qf ffs.

You arbitrary decided that hard court outdoor is always a more favorable condition for Federer, it's not always like that. Furthermore, just to state the obvious, conditions comparison can't be made on different surfaces: grass is always faster than hard, as well as hard is always faster than clay.

He even lost 2008 AO to Djokovic, 2008 RG and Wimbledon to Nadal , 2009 AO to Nadal, imagine being no1 for about 4.5 years and to lose continuosly to one player on multiple surfaces, he felt his era was about to end and that's the reason he broke down(but he came back well in 2009 winning RG and Wimbledon)

Dude, you realise that there wont be tennis playiers in history books right...?
What about Nadal's 19th Grand Slam title last night? 😂 Federer will never be the greatest.

I think Djoker Nole is the better ball returner compared to Nadal
Buddy rod laver had the court sped up to be faster is why. Rafa can’t beat Roger on fast courts, it’s his worst surface. Watch the 09 final Australian is way slow like the us open now. If they played at the Us open rafa would beat him.

It is shocking how federer never won a clay gam against nadal
People say how devastating the Nadal loss in the AO this year was but honestly Federer losing to Nadal in Wimbledon is the most damning loss of them all.
Fed would have won 7 Wimbledons in a row if not for that 9-7 in the 5th.

huge respect for Nadal but Federer is genius and the king of tennis

Federer better than Nadal!
Yaa the way he smashed that ball clearly tells you how badly he wanted that. After AO 2017, his celebrations against Nadal havent been this animated.
Nadatards and logic dont go hand in hand.
How beautifully Rafa avoided fed from 2004-2008 in US open and Aus open losing in 3rd 4th rounds and now in grass since 2011 wimbledon. Hasnt reached a qf ffs.

man bat
It looks like you don't know that indoor and outdoor are two completely different condition, and outdoor conditions are also influenced by temperature and humidity. You arbitrary decided that hard court outdoor is always a more favorable condition for Federer, it's not always like that. Furthermore, just to state the obvious, conditions comparison can't be made on different surfaces: grass is always faster than hard, as well as hard is always faster than clay.

Federer tried to beat Nadal, in vain, at his own game by playing extended points with long rallies. Once the points were short and crisp,Nadal has lost more in recent times. Still H2H is loaded in Spaniard 's favour.
Wow, I never realised he never lost to Roger at the French in all those years, and still cannot beleive they never met at the US open?
He lost once in semi I think... And rogger won that French open
Same here with the US Open.
@@rehan9746😂 it was soderling mate
Federer dominated Nadal at the end of his career.
Nadal has beaten Federer at every GS final. Federer could never beat Nadal at the French.
Didn't Fed beat Rafa at AO final 2017?
@@michelez715 Yes he did. Why don't you reread the comment you replied to
@@travisk9897 he said every grand slam finals, not every RG final. So based on OP comment he is wrong
@@dewman7477 I can't tell if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me. OP said Feds couldn't beat Nadal at French to which "Michele Z" said didn't Fed beat Rafa at AO final 2017. I was saying that Micheles comment is irrelevant because the AO is not the French
2017-2018 It revenge time of Federer .
Maybe end year of 2017 ,H2H is 23-16
Now become 24-15
I ed make a guess and say they ll meet atleast 6 more times in their careers, fed will take 5 of them Nadal 1.
Hence 24-20 is what the hth might look at the end of the it. That would look like a completely different story as to how we remembered the rivalry back in 2008-14. Even as a Rafa Fan you have got to give it to Federer would completely turning the rivalry on its head, yes the statistics give rafa the edge but the late resurgence from fed to figure Rafa out was cataclysmic effort from the maestro.
As a Tennis Fan : This is how the big three eventually would look like
1. Federer (who has a strong chance of closing with 21+ majors now)
2. Djokovic ( expect him to clinch 4+ majors and finish with 16+ slams plus a second french open possibly - that would set him apart)
3. Nadal ( 18+ slams, possibly 19 - considering RG is his forte and him having a decent chance on the hard court slams)
Where are you now🤣🤣🤣
22 baby
Hard Court: 11-9 Fed
Clay Court: 14-2 Rafa
Grass Court: 3-1 Fed
Indoor Court: 5-1 Fed
Unfair.... no?
Outdoor= 8-6 Rafa..
Adriano Tranquilli, Only 3 outdoor hard court matches played before 2010 compared to 11 outdoor matches after 2010. Plus, 2017 outdoor h2h was 4-0 Fed when both returned to peak form
A lot of their matches were on clay weirdly
No matter how hard Federer hit the ball, he doesn't t grunt so it proves some players dont need to do it every shot
they don't need to do it at all. no idea why they do. seles started that shit.
@@moaningpheromones horrible habit popularised by Seles and later Nadal. Rod Laver hit rockets with heavy wooden rackets in silence, so did Edberg, Sampras, Federer with modern rackets. If they want to intimidate the rival, just do a Haka before the match and then play in silence, please.
The amount of games they ve played on clay is the reason why it tends so much for Rafa..
Nadal is so much better, always was. 9-3 in slams, lol!
20>16 didn't they teach you that in elementary school?
man bat hahaha
@man bat nadal has literally lost 5 in a row now to federer since fed turned 35 ahahahahahahahahahha
10-3

It's a true miracle for tennis fans to see these two guys still occupy the world no.1 and no.2 today.
Its a seriously close debate regarding the goat 🐐 between Roger, rafa and novak, but rafa i feel would've been the outright goat if it wasn't for injuries. But hey let's bloody enjoy them while they still here
But he isn’t even close to being the GOAT on grass / Hard & hasn’t even won a ATP world tour final. He is 70% clay
@@adammohamed..if it wasn't for injuries, especially his knees then he would of been great on all surfaces. He was taking over Federer with ease (just look at their head to head) on all surfaces. That was my point that if it wasn't for Injuries then he would've been way ahead
With or w/o injury Federer and djokol were still better on hard and grass so it doesn't matter on top of that nadal playstyle cause him all those injuries
@@adammohamed.. Djokovic and Federer won 70% of titles on hard courts too
Can someone tell me why they met 17 times on clay ? Are there so many clay tourneys ?
They haven't played a clay court match since 2013. Might explain why Federer has more wins against Nadal since that point. Either way you can tell how much Nadal has changed since 2015. He's not had the same confidence since and that's affected his performances against the top-top players. Not to mention that Nadal's forehand has not been the same since Wimbledon 2014. Federer has always been brilliant even before and after injuries. Nadal has had so many injuries that it really has affected his career.
After that demolition job by Kyrgios? Haha, I remember that match very well.... Especially that tweener drop shot. Classic Kyrgios
Lol, delusional af .They haven't met at grass since 2008. Thanks to Nadal's versatility on grass since 2011.
aman gajraj lmao blame federer for losing in both 2010 and 2011 wimbledon
They haven't played a grass court match since 2007.....That maybe explains the difference in H2H between them..;)But of course you don't even mention that..
2008 sry..missclick
Wow, I didn't realize this was so one sided until I saw these matches one after the other
Rafa is 12-6 vs federer in his prime lol 😂 lol 😂 . Greatest huh ?😂
Nadal is the Goat on Clay.
Your mother?
13'09''' uno de los momentos más dramáticos, apasionantes y memorables de mi vida y la del tenis, el momento en el que el mas grande volvió a ganar un GS después de 5 años y ante el rival de toda la vida...increíble!
Last time nadal beat Federer, was in 2014 AO, before that nadal had beaten Federer 4th straight times in hard courts, nadal, never had avoid, Federer in any surface!!! How you, Federer fans like them apples???😂
Last time, nadal did beat Federer it was, 2014 AO, before that, nadal had beaten Federer, 4 straight times, in hards courts... beside that fact, nadal never, had avoid, playing Federer in any surface, so how Federer fans, like them apples???😇😅😂🤣
Where is French open 2019 and wimbeldon 2019?
If Federer had always played like in 2017....h2h 30-8 for Federer
37-1, gotta give RG 2008 to Nadal tho. I’m gracious
Louis Miller lol, You guys just cant deny that Prime Nadal would kick Prime Fed ass so bad. And actually he did 23-15...
Buddy federer was 10 times better in his younger days wth are you talking about, there’s no way a 35 year old man is going to beat a prime 20 year old who’s fast and hardly possible to hit a winner on.
@@taylorpack2839 37-1XDDDD????
Need to find the updated video with their last 2 matches
Rafa wins 2 gs againts Roger in australia and London and roger never could win a RG final against Rafa Nadal!
Rodrigo Sygua 2008 federer
Nadal's absolute superiority on clay.
Quite even h2h on hard+grass.
13-10 TO FED EXCLUSING CLAY
Oliver Bottom yeah that's why he said "quite" even, a 3 win difference is not big atleast not as a big as 11 win difference for Nadal on Clay.
If federer continues to skip clay the hdh will continue to go his way. Nadal hasnt beaten federer since 2014. Trends show that will continue at least until injury/loss of form which is distant atm
Sure, "since 2014" you're talking like they met consistently since 2014, when excluding 2017 they have only met once since then, Federer is 36, Murray and Djokovic are comming back next year, the h2h conversation is pretty much over, in fact I can hardly Federer winning another grand slam match against Nadal unless it's Wimbledon, even if he skips clay the h2h is pretty much decided in favoure of Nadal.
No one thought he would win this year yet he did so you cant make statements like that. Anyway this arguments pointless at least until they both retire otherwise we're just predicting. When their careers are over then we can have this discussion.
Anyone know what song this beat is from?
rafa>>>>>>>>roger
man bat Can you please shut up that's so racist
man bat Would be better if he puts it up your behind
5:07 and 8:20 When Federer beat God of Clay on Clay. I think he will cherish these victories forever.
Ban clay courts now!
It's quite amazing to think that there is a player who Roger Federer has played and NEVER had a winning record against.
Dominic Thiem also
Djokovic and Murray also
@@rahulrose11 Federer has winning record against Murray
I don’t understand the “Nadal is only ahead because of all the clay game” like is it not clay for both or is it just clay for fed? It’s the same for both so I don’t understand the issue, can someone explain ?
