According to Eddie around 1975 they wanted to name the band "Genesis", not knowing there was a band in England with that name already.
Original name was Rat Salade. Then came Mammoth. Only to realize that Name was used. So they went Simply as Van Halen. According by reading the footnotes to Van Halen 2 Album
Every VH fan that read 'Van Halen Rising' by Greg Renoff knows this story
Correct, Rat Salad was what Eddie, Alex, bassist Mark Stone and keyboardist Jim Pewsey were in favor of.

I always heard that when they started in Pasadena, the band's name was Mammoth.
Maybe since the band went on to reach such great fame that Dave feels it would be rather pompous to say they were once called 'Mammoth ' Dave is just showing us his' humble side ' .

I believe they left the mike on when they were recording...Roth was talking and joking around being his usual self...not sure if it was Eddie or Ted saying let's throw that in there. After they heard it later.
Yet somehow it worked out perfectly!
He was much more sane looking and sounding back then.
