    Such a cool project! Felt like a 5 minute video even though it's almost 20. And I really liked the "locator pin" trick at the drill press! Never seen that before, definitely keeping it in my pocket.

    I can't read all the comments to see if anyone made this suggestion. I was thinking it might have been a lot easier to make the body by resawing the back off the blank then shaping the outside of the body. Next you would band saw out the interior of the body. Shape the back the same way you shaped the front and glue it to the body.
    This being similar to the way you make bandsaw boxes. Plus you ghave a sizable chunk of wood leftover from the cutout interior.
    Great video. Well done.

      Thanks! If these tools cost me $10k my husband would have killed me.

    • @operationgoldfish8331
      @operationgoldfish8331 4 года назад +3

      @@3x3CustomTamar Maybe not $10k, but decent quality power tools cost a fair bit and you must have at least $1,000 worth there. That belt sander alone is a costly looking item.
      I also envy you Americans your access to space. Here in the UK land is pricey and I end up basically having to stack tools on top of each other - it makes maintaining accuracy a bit difficult. Wood is also much more expensive over here so I have to recycle/upcycle scrap wood. Overall, an interesting effort but I'd probably have gone the fabrication route, rather than the router route for the body build.

    • @3x3CustomTamar
      @3x3CustomTamar  4 года назад +5

      Grey Wolf yeah. I guess I take that stuff for granted. I totally agree with you on the construction of the body. Next time I’m going to cut out thin strips of plywood to the shape I want. Then glue those up together to make the walls taller

      Well, the thing is a lot of these channels cater more towards professional woodworkers, not weekend woodworkers. The same thing can be done with hand tools, and we're for decades before any of the modern tools available today.

    You did a great job. I really don't understand the negative comments about how you built it. You made it from materials you had available and did a really good job. You designed the project, solved problems, made process decisions, and created a one-of-a-kind three string guitar that looks really good and sounds as good as it looks. I don't get the sniping about HOW you made it, like there are style points for build / process decisions. It's the end result that counts and you hit it out of the park. Congratulations to you!

    To help with the fretboard glue up, I like to drill a hole right in the middle of 2 of the fret slots (top and bottom of fretboard) and then use a toothpick as locator pins, that way everything stays inplace while clamping and the toothpick is then hidden under the fret.

      Definitely not consistent with traditional guitar builds, but after watching this I watched a few other cigar box builds and I have to say this is hands above those. Acoustic guitars want to have a lot of resonance, which generally means thinner back, sides and top. I was shaking my head through the whole build, but then have to admit it sounded surprisingly awesome in the end.
      That spalted top was beautiful!
      Also, I've never used those disc piezos before. When I saw all that hot glue I thought, "that's never going to work". It defies nearly every principle of piezos I am familiar with, but it sounded great.
      So all that constructive criticism I was saving up??? Nevermind. You built a beautiful instrument and it sounded great.
      Thanks for sharing.

    • @buckhorncortez
      @buckhorncortez 5 лет назад +1

      Why would you cringe for the whole video? She did a great job with the guitar and it came out fine. Do you get some kind of style points for HOW the project is made? You might not use the same wood working techniques - but, YOUR techniques are necessarily either better or correct - they're simply different. I probably would not have built it the same way, but I learned a couple of alternative methods watching the video and may try incorporating them into my work. I truly don't get the comment.

      @3x3CustomTamar  5 лет назад +2

      QuinnMendel it’s different from a traditional guitar bc it’s not a traditional guitar! It’s a whole nother animal! But it gave me the confidence to think that I can actually build a real acoustic guitar. When I get a drum sander of course.... 😂😂

      @@3x3CustomTamar Yep - I get that. Honestly, I've never built a cigarbox guitar or looked into their typical construction. So I watched your video first and formed some opinions, but then (thankfully) had the presence of mind to watch a few other cigarbox builds which reset my expectations and gave me a renewed appreciation for what you accomplished.
      Frankly, my biggest concern with your approach is with all that end grain. I really, really hope it holds up, but my history with such matters is that it will want to warp and split. Hopefully the wood hardener will save you...

    One thing I have found out about significant tear outs when routing, the curve takes you into the direction of the grain. This means that router bit is pulling the wood apart. What I do in those situations is to run the router backwards. Then the bit is compressing the wood. It still require light passes but when routing in the wrong direction, the bit is actually pushing the router away from the wood. And I always make a final pass moving the router in the right direction to make sure I have properly trimmed the material.

    • @3x3CustomTamar
      @3x3CustomTamar  4 года назад +1

      Yup. It’s called a climb cut

    • @free-energy-systems
      @free-energy-systems 4 года назад

      @@3x3CustomTamar I was thinking about this. It's something I'll probably try sine I use a cordless router. And that's using guide ebarings that are 1/8 and 1/4 inch larger than the guide bearing I'll use for making the final cut. When the router moves in the wrong direction, it can leave scallops (a wavy surface). A spiral bit is actually cutting less material at one time that a straight flute. Also, the difference between using a 3/4 in. dia. and a 3/8 in. dia. router bit is surface speed of the cutter and the amount of torque from the router that it converts into force. A larger diameter cutter will have less shearing force than a smaller diameter cutter. An example of this is of you had a wood block mounted to a piece of wood on your work bench, how many lbs. of force would it take to shear the dowels? I used to work in a machine shop and speeds, feeds and rpm were everything. I have an
      18 v cordless router and I try to limit using any cutter over 3/8 in. dia. It's prone to gouging wood. Hopefully your viewers will find this information helpful. p.s., remember the night stand/drill press stand that you built a couple of years ago? You might recognize how it's influenced the project that I'm working on. :)

    Gorgeous guitar, I was gobsmacked by how loud it was unplugged... and the tone was as surprising... the floating bridge was very classy, it sounded perfectly intonated... whilst perfect as is, a tortoiseshell pickguard would really finish this off... a mini jazzbox, I love it...
