    Something I just learned works really well when soldering wire to large flat surfaces - use plumbing flux on the larger flat surface. The solder will flow very very nicely on the entire surface and create a great connection. I did this recently when soldering wires to a powertool battery adapter.

    Hey Tamar, I really like that you leave what you did wrong and make comments about it. When I started watching woodworking videos to learn it was very frustrating for me always getting things wrong and seeing someone that is so good doing mistakes makes me feel more encouraged. Cheers

      You said Gibson. Dammit now you got me doing it! We're all gonna get sued.
      Do they serve Wendy's in jail?
      I hope I can bring My Pillow. Case.
      I wonder if ill need to take a Jet
      Ok my point is simply saying a name brand is not stepping on a trademark
      Putting Gibson name and or logo on your creations and selling it is. If its for you own use its not. Its when you try and profit from a name brands good name.
      A close match name can also be a violation.
      JBC. made and sold goods for the US market. JVC opened suit Jbc was found guilty of infringement and had to change its name and pay Jvc .
      Now if I sold my pillow but had a differnt logo then the my pillow company might not have the same legal claim becuse the term my pillow is a household name.
      When somone takes your pillow you dont yell give me my lump of fiber or foam filled thing. No becuse its yours you ask for your my pillow. Wile the brand name is novel if somone wanted to push it i dont think the my pillow company could defend its namesake as a trademark brand. Its a household name.
      It never should have been given the trade mark using that term. A decent lawer could argue that in a court of law and win the case.
      GIBSON is a unique name. The brand has made that name household.
      A comon phrase like my pillow isn't anything new. But the artwork was.
      Now why do I know this crap?
      I was reading trademark laws.
      And this was my understanding to how the laws are written. It would be up to a judge to interpret the law as explained by an attorney arguing the case.

  • @jimmygrant3151
    @jimmygrant3151 4 года назад +3

    That is a really cool guitar. I'm so happy that you show all the mistakes. Some people say mistakes are bad, and they only show a perfect world on the videos. You are special in that you don't hide the raw - which is the most important to wood workers. This video really inspires me to build my own. Crimson is also really cool. I'm glad you reference them. On your soldering, if you have solder that doesn't stick, try scratching the surface in a cross pattern and make sure you iron is hot. Pre-solder a dab on the surface, pre-solder your wire, then solder both together, then add a little dab on top, and hold until all form one bond. Also another trick is to use one of those small high powered magnets to hold the wire down while you solder.

    • @3x3CustomTamar

      @@3x3CustomTamar also when soldering to metal if the piece to solder is big you need a higher power soldering iron or to preheat the piece, for example, when soldering a pot first pre-tin the wire applying a little bit of solder to the wire before everything, then rough the surface with some sand paper, then (if you don't have a high power iron) touch the surface with the iron for 3~4 seconds, then apply a little bit of solder until it sticks, as fast as you can (so it doesn't get cold) solder the wire that you already pre-tinned and that should get the job done

    For your next build, make the veneer bigger so you can use it on the headstock and match it with the body. The triangular shapes really matched the explorer's body on this build.
    I really recommend you use flux for soldering in order to get a good adherence. And using flux core solder. Don't breathe the fumes. Put a small fan next to the work you're doing. Try out some heat shrink and getting everything really neat. Keep up the good work, it's so enjoyable!

    • @3x3CustomTamar
      @3x3CustomTamar  4 года назад

      I used flux core solder. And I tried used flux paste. Nothing would work to stick to the edge of this piezo. I tried sanding. I tried a crazy amount of heat for a crazy long time even. Nothing. I ended up having to buy a piezo that already had wire soldered to it. All my other joints went really great! I have no idea why it wasn’t working. A buddy of mine came over and he couldn’t figure it out either. Oh well. Ha

    I work best with actual size patterns for my projects. I use transfer paper in between the pattern and the wood and then trace the lines. Time consuming and a pain if I want to make more than one of the same project. I loved what you did, after cutting out the pattern then taping it to 1/4 board and the genius step spray painting the edges. Which after cutting that out you now have a sturdy multiple use template. I’m so glad I subscribe to you channel; for me this is a ground breaking solution. Thanks so much, you’re doing a great job, I’m hoping you have many more ideas and builds.

      That’s so awesome to hear that it was useful. I usually trace around my paper template but for this build I happened to have had a can of spray paint on the bench. And the light bulb went off. Ha!

    For good solder joints, there is a little prep work involved, but not too bad. In my job doing circuit card repair under a microscope, we use special abrasive erasers to clean the pads you intend to solder before cleaning them off with isopropyl. I'd say isopropyl and a q-tip will work fine for this part. You will also want to tin the things you plan on soldering: the pads and the wires. Tinning is just pre-soldering to make sure the joints will all take solder when you actually go to join parts. One of the big things you'll want to use is flux. I call it my "frenemy" because as nasty and sticky as it is (and in my job, I had to flush all traces of it from my work), it works absolute wonders, making beautiful, smooth, shiny fillets as opposed to dull, spiky globs. Put a little flux on anything that is going to receive solder before applying heat. Your work is amazing, and I learn a lot from your journeys. If these tips make your work amazinger, cool!

    Great project. I'm making a 3 string Randy Rhoads style V guitar.
    I think the problem with your first piezo is that being jammed between the neck and the top, it simply isn't vibrating enough to produce enough signal to make a sound. When soldering piezos, I glue the wire on the piezo disk (gluing the insulator, not the conductor) before soldering to keep it in place. A preamp is a good idea when working with piezos because they don't resemble guitar pickups electronically (keyword: impedance). I use the "Fetzer valve" circuit in my piezo guitars.
    The top material with plywood and the intarsia (which looks fantastic btw) isn't ideal for getting a nice acoustic tone or piezo tone. Quartersawn softwood is generally used for this purpose because its vibration properties. Plywood, being glued cross grain, doesn't vibrate a lot. Copious amounts of boiled linseed oil improve the vibration qualities in solid wood tops (believe it or not)! You can test different top materials by tapping on them with your fingers, a good material has a "musical boing" sound while plywood has a dull thud.
    The top material doesn't matter with the magnetic pickup (unless you believe in the tonewood conspiracy).
    Looking forward to seeing your build-off project!

    • @3x3CustomTamar
      @3x3CustomTamar  4 года назад +1

      Sounds cool. Thanks so much! I don’t think that was the problem with the piezo. I made another one just like this where I put the piezo in the neck under the top and it worked just fine. I think it cracked when I clamped it. There was zero signal coming out of it. Good tip on the soldering
