My advice to any driver is to escape the mega carriers asap once you get a year or two of experience. Look into grocery stores, hauling lumber , fuel, wood chips, etc. you basically want to drive for a private carrier that hauls their own freight and doesn’t depend on load boards. These types of places typically pay a LOT more and have better benefits.
Your a smart young lady, you'll do fine and get the job you want, your putting in your dues as your are suppose to and it'll pay off, most young people want that instant gratification. Giving you props from a 25year veteran out here and I've hauled it all including fuel, get it girl!
Being a former fuel hauler with Kenan Transport and Pilot Flying/ J. I think I can give you a few pointers. There is slow periods hauling fuel. It's been a many of days I was told to stay home or had an early night. Not all companies pay by the hour. When I was with Kenan Transport, they paid by the load. Some small company fuel haulers got paid by how many gallons they could crammed in that trailer. Some times you get sent home because rack (refinery) issues. Or when the seasonal gravity of the fuel changes and the rack starts to allocated (restricting) supplies. That means early day/night or just don't come in. Base on my experience. I'll tell you to get into cryogenics hauling. Pay is excellent, and really easy work. Look up companies like Air Products, Linde, and AirGas.
I came in with no tractor trailer experience from a straight garbage truck. I went into hazmat tanker hauling explosives for a smaller company. I got day 1 insurance starting out at 29.00. And 25.00 perdeim. I got 10 days vacation and a 40 hour guarantee. I got like a 1.16 pay bump my my first year. We also don't do slip seating so your truck is yours.iy took me forever and 5 years of garbage to figure it out. We make and haul our own stuff it's usually overnight runs at the most 2 nights. My advice to everyone go specialized and smaller companies.these bigger companies got bigger off of robbing their people.
Fuel hauling sums up trucking if we being honest. They make a lot of money because they work a lot of hours. I say it all the time if trucking was a 40 hour job a lot of ppl wouldn’t be in it. U got salary 9-5 office jobs that make 80k in trucking w/ most jobs you got to live on that clock to see 80
You're on the right track keep your head up, weather the storm and stay positive. Also, when you move on from Schneider and start making more money set up a roth IRA for your retirement. About 130 a week will max it out for the year.
Hello Ms. Woods, congrats on your engagement! I worked for Schneider and had the exact same ambitions as you. I even wanted to go to Gemini after Schneider. I ended up finding a job at KAG making double the pay and it was closer to my home. Schneider is a wonderful starter company and for those’d who are content with pay and standards. Like you said, tankers all the way. I love it. I won’t drive anything else. Overall, keep KAG in mind, it’s good over here. Hit me up for more information if you would like. Keep doing your thing! You’re welcome! Get as much experience as you can and be ready to move on around your 1 year mark for sure. I still talk to my old co-worker who is on the Eco-lab account as well and she shares the exact same experience you’re having.
