    I was born in the 80's so the original wins no contest. The remake shouldn't even be in same conversation. You can't reinvent the wheel. Cast is amazing. I'm actually gonna be meeting Robert Englund and the entire freddy 3 cast in November, so stoked

    *Nightmare 1984* : Memorable after almost 40 years
    *Nightmare 2010* : Not memorable after 40 minutes
    That's basically the difference in all these modern remakes, they are so watered down and generic that they leave the viewer with nothing, no memories, no quotable lines, nothing.

    I love the original. I also like the remake. I actually like the overtness of CM. It gives the revenge aspect a little more grounding as to why he goes after the kids instead of the parents that killed him. The Freddy Wall scene is much better in the original. In the remake, I wish they actually followed through with "Freddy was innocent" angle they started going down. The situation of falsely accused teachers by preschool kids was an actual case in California. I think they just couldn't figure out how to end it if they went that direction. So, it became a plot thread just hung there.

    There was a joy that Robert Englund's Freddy got out of toying with his victims that really set the tone of his Freddy beautifully. He was playing with his food, and got an almost childlike delight out of it. The audience could share in his joy. Shifting the tone to make it all sexual in nature just made it too skeezy. You can't root for that.

    Personally there are 2 things I'd change about this movie
    1) the title of the movie should've been in the opening titles not after the first kill, I always thought that was weird
    2) Freddy should've been falsey accused, idk how the parents could've come to the conclusion that he was hurting kids but it would differentiate it from the original, like when they were looking at the pictures instead of "Those" photos it should've been them just having fun kinda like family pictures and maybe have him say something like "I loved you kids... Like you were my own and THIS IS THE THANKS I GET?!?!?!?" or something like that I'm not a writer lol

    Yeah gonna have to kindly disagree with you on the newer Freddy being scarier. Maybe it's my bias from sneaking into the living room in 1985 at 6 and watching it on VHS for the first time, and it being my favorite horror movie of all time (honorable mention goes to I Saw The Devil) but the part one Krueger was terrifying. His herky jerky movements, and that rotted teethed smile and eyeball twitch when he cut off his finger to Tina. Englund absolutely figured that puzzle out brilliantly. I just laughed at the Haley version, it was just so preposterous to me.

    I'm cool with Jackie's portrayal. I think it's really solid. I think the movie though, is bad. It's all corny, bad writing/acting (minus Jackie), bad CGI. Bad plot. The plot is a middle school version of the original.
    I think it could have been a nice great film, if the film itself was reworked, wrote, shot, and casted. I'm not against remakes of any sort. My favorite Jason is the 2009 remake.
    Also, I really wish that the twist was that Fred was actually innocent, and didn't touch those children. That wokld be a cool way to do something different with the remake, without really changing anything story wise.

    Ok, I was drinking water when you did your creep walk up the stairs and I choked a little! Never laugh while drinking water! You were too funny. Loved the intro. The thing that bugs me the most about the remake wasn't so much the darker tone (if you're going to show the ugliness of people, then do that) but late in the movie they show him frolicing with the kids like some fun uncle! That was gross because they wanted to make him likeable as well as being a gross monster. They were too wrapped up in the origin story idea to see what they were doing imo. I hope it wasn't intentional! They needed to pick one idea over the other. Fun uncle or gross monster. Having both really bothers me to this day!

    Nancy is the OG!!!
    She is my absolute favorite even over Laurie. Her journey was so much harsher than anything Laurie had to endure. Like she couldn't sleep! Can you imagine having to deal with a dream killer, the death of your best friends, finding out who that killer is with no google, staying awake, dealing with her psycho mom, dealing with her controlling and distant father, all while setting up setting up booby traps around the house. And yet? She fucking did it without crying or expecting anything of a reward out of it other than being able to live.
    Like that's intense man. I would say only Ripley and Sidney Prescott had it just as bad if not even worse than her.
    The fact that Heather is suuuuuch a sweetheart 😘 and has so much pride in the character is the chef's 💋.
    Like if any scream queen had gumption. It was goddamn Nancy Motherf***g Thompson. 💪🤘💅🏋️🏋️🏋️
    I legit got got all giddy when you started explaining how you started to reassess her character again.
    That's what I loved about Wes craven, his leading ladies always had a brain and kicked ass without ever suffering from Mary Sue syndrome.

    As always a great review/comparison with an funny intro. What made the brilliant Mister Craven was not only style, but also a lot of substance. Thats kind of missing in the remake: it's a lot of style, not much more. But Jackie Haley is awesome in everything he does, he saves the movie. At the beginning of the video you showed an excerpt from an interview. Here one can see Wes Craven's claim and ambition to bring the real horrors of life to the screen. He really was an artist who put a lot of thought and heart into each of his projects.

    I've only ever seen the remake once and in the theater. I didn't hate it but it just didn't click with me. Robert Englund IS Freddy. Jackie Earl Haley had a difficult task of bringing a despicable character who became a fan favorite back to their evil roots but fans want to cheer Freddy and you just can't do that in the remake without feeling disgusted. In that respect he did his job and maybe if Freddy hadn't become such an icon it might have worked better. Maybe I'd feel different if I could ever get myself to have a second viewing but I just can't get myself to do so.

    The remake has grown slightly on me over the years, I still look at it as a really waisted opportunity to break new ground rather than just put it on for entertainment, I can never quite finish the whole movie because certain things just bore me or annoy me too much, that being said I appreciate the attempt and I love some of the dream sequence’s as well as the lighting which you seem to highlight in you’re assessment! Jackie Earl Haley is best thing about the remake the rest is a sad fact. The effects are in some cases worse than the original. A 26 year old movie completed on a budget that just about crossed a million. The remake released in 2010 had a production budget of 35 million. Accounting for inflation still much higher. Callbacks to the original, the wall scene, tub scene lessen the remake. With hindsight not foresight. Cannot blame the makers for the re enactments they made a seemingly logical decision. But what about the rest - story, dialogue, set pieces. They fall short. The remake isn’t bad but it’s dull and not memorable. I’ve seen it thrice maybe more accounting for individual scenes. I feel sad. I was 10 years old when the original came out. I was prevented from watching it. My cousin sister went to see it and narrated the movie to me in order. I got to see it shortly thereafter on video. A life changing experience. An original story that stays you. 12 years have passed since the remake I suppose Elm Street is a buried memory not to be revived. And I like your idea of Kris Fowler, that kind of subversion of the original would have been great.

    I for One liked Jackie as Freddy, and I never understood the shying away from his Child predator persona... In general i never understood why murder/death/guts etc Are fine in horror movies... But the psychological torment of abuse, sexual abuse etc is so taboo.. To me it makes for a much more terrifying experience...
    Freddy quickly became a joke in later movies, but He was rather unsettling in the original, Wes Cravens New nightmare... And in the remake they played on that alot... He was much scarier when you view him as a predator, who preyed on Kids... Specificakky the same Kids he later kills..
    There is nothing graphic shown, like him actually abusing Kids sexually etc... But I feel like the implication and knowledge of him being this monster, sets your imagination on fire. We can usually imagine alot more terrifying things than Are usually shown on screen...
    Its a shame the script wasnt All that great... I think with a better handle on things... Jackie Earle would have really made ppl uneasy... He did a great job as Rorschach... And for My part i always wanted to see him as Cletus Kassidy(Carnage) in an r-rated Venom/Spider-man movie where he goes around killing ppl Jack the ripper style as he was introduced... He always looked the part...

    The original is better, the whole concept and cinematography was revolutionary for its time. Freddy isn’t just another almost zombie like slasher type character like Jason Vorhees or Michael Myers. He enjoys what he does.
    The ending really spoils the first one, and it’s the same in the reboot. I’m not sure why they didn’t fix it.
    The reboot did improve things with advancements in technology but it didn’t improve the characters, aside from the different angle they took with Freddy, the other characters are just vapid. There’s no-one to root for. Even though Freddy is likeable, you should still want Nancy, the final girl to win out and survive. With the reboot, it’s team Freddy all the way.

    Very well done comparison. However, I do feel I need to respond to one particular thing you said when talking about remake Freddy at 23:21 of your video:
    “But what about the make up, it looks so stupid!” Bring a new thought to the table”
    Well, I am gonna bring a new thought to the table and respectfully disagree with you here. Now I could be reaching/being a bit over analytical here, but that comment came off a little too…”dismissive” of that criticism for me when I watched it. Yes, you CAN get used to the makeup after a while on repeat watchings, but imo it is still a valid criticism, and for deeper reasons than just the superficial complaint of “It looks stupid/ugly”. Some people have tried to defend the makeup by claiming “Well, it’s more realistic of how burn victims would actually look.” But this reasoning I think fundamentally misses the point of who Freddy Krueger is as a character. Yes, the make up isn’t as realistic and certainly looks a lot more “demonic” in the original film, but I think that was the point. Freddy has carte blanche be whoever he wants, whatever he wants, and do whatever he wants in the dream world. The makeup looking a lot more monstrous & demonic to me at least thematically makes sense; he is “The Dream Demon” after all.

    They cannot even compare, remake is simply garbage. It was directed by dude who had no idea what he was doing, he only directed some music videos prior to this, which explains his godawful non-existing direction when it comes to actors. All of those actors were talented, yet they are completely wooded and clueless in this movie. Just to give an example, Rooney Mara was so wooden in this movie, then next movie she gave amazing performance as Lisbet Salander, and she's one of those actresses that consistently get better with each movie. Kyle Gallner is also great when he has proper script and direction, I remember him playing super creepy serial killer in Criminal Minds and he was amazing in "Red".
    Story was all over the place, but what put screwdriver into my ear every time was the fact that about 95% of Freddy's dialogue was just recycled lines from other movies, it was like "Freddy's best" compilation. Rest of the dialogue is just nonsensical most of the time. When he actually has original lines, he's just whining and being petty. Then we have kills, which are incredibly dull. Every kill was exactly the same, teen falls asleep, teen wakes up and environment changes via CGI, Freddy shows up and slashes\stabs them and that was about it. Nancy was incredibly dull and typical mid 2000s edgy "art emo student", however like I said, this wasn't really Mara's fault, she's incredible actress, it's just that this guy had no idea how to direct her.
    Compare this to original, which had amazing direction and story narrative, dozen of creepy moments, great atmosphere, descent acting, incredible menacing presence by Robert Englund, creepy soundtrack and every kill in the movie was so creative and unique.

    What I can find creepier in the original isn't that Freddy has an implied sexual nature to him, but that Nancy and her friends most likely had older siblings they forgot about. Nancy at least had to have one since her mom is dealing with everything the worst.

    • @SirNerdLeroy
      @SirNerdLeroy Год назад

      @@B1Kobe0824 Just because it was a deleted scene doesn't mean it's not true. That's why I said implied rather than saying they outright announced it. The movie is written and filmed with that in mind so when it's cut out, it's still felt.

    • @SirNerdLeroy
      @SirNerdLeroy Год назад

      @@B1Kobe0824 most scenes get cut for time and pacing because it's what the studio wants (which is why a movie like terrifier 2 is so long since it didn't have limitations). If you look at the movie as is, then I guess you can come to that conclusion, but I always assumed she had to have had an older sibling. I didn't even know there was a scene that actively said so for a while. It just made sense because why else would Nancy's mom have the glove? Why would she take it the hardest? Why would her dad be so void? They're responding to the trauma of losing a child and killing the man who did it and realizing it didn't solve anything.
      With a good story, there's another story within that can be found. Taking a scene like that out let's the audience piece it together through the context clues that do still exist. When you write a reveal like that, it seeps in other parts of the script. You could take out the twist of the 6th sense and people will still grasp that Bruce Willis was dead throughout the film.

      @SirNerdLeroy Год назад

      @@mattdad8429 It's not irrelevant, it's just not shown. Nancy having an older sibling isn't confirmed nor denied. It is implied, though, since that was the original intent and it shows throughout the movie. Deleting the scene could have just been for pacing. The scene adds lore more than pushing the plot forward. It's not needed since it's something the audience can gather through context clues. Which is why I always thought she had an older sibling before knowing there was a deleted scene.
      I've dealt with a bunch of movies and shows saying there was a secret sibling all along or even taking a sibling away with no explanation. Saying Nancy most likely had one isn't far fetched. Especially from a movie where they actively pulled back elements and let them be implied rather than pointed out directly.

    As a life-long Fredhead, my main issue with the remake was how absolutely lazy and uninspired it was. New Line and Platinum Dunes had a chance to do something really cool and potentially lucrative: reinvent and reinvigorate a classic character for a new generation of fans. There are a number of ways they could have approached this and, as long as they were respectful of the lore and the essence of what made the original such a classic, they might have succeeded. This is not what they did. Instead of hiring a director who could have presented a really innovative and imaginative approach to the project, instead of bring in Wes as a consultant, instead of doing anything to really move the genre and lore into some really cool and truly frightening areas, what did they do? They hired Michael Bay, they did shot for shot recreations, added laughably bad cgi, and changed just enough to give the appearance of originality while regurgitating inferior retreads. I still hope that a good remake can be done, but it would take a director like James Wan or Guermo Del Toro to do it justice.

    Probably a bit lost on new -ish audiences but this film came out right after the recession and the housing bubble burst. I remember going into theaters to watch it and they had all those big "McMansion" style house glory shots in it, juxtaposed to hearing how everyone was losing their houses in the past couple of months. This is also juxtaposed to the original, which had shots in poor urban areas, including some that were supposedly gang-ridden in Italy. No one really talked about it back then, but I immediately took note that it was yet another thing presumably stroking audiences the wrong way.
    Also thanks for all the Heather/Nancy love! She's so wildly under appreciated!!

    I don’t think that there’s any doubt that the original Nightmare On Elm Street is better it’s supreme in every conceivable way you can imagine. Story wise, writing, acting and especially directing. The remake’s plot is confusing, the writing is atrocious, the acting is phoned in and soulless in fact the only two actors who actually try are the actress that plays Tina and Jackie Earl Haley as Freddy. The directing is unquestionably the worst part of the remake whereas with the original it was a strength. I see the Nightmare On Elm Street remake as a soulless cash grab nothing more.

While I love Jackie's voice for Freddy, I wasn't a fan of the directorial decisions with the story and Robert was able to make it fun because of Wes. The fact that Wes wasn't even asked about the remake also kind of rubs me the wrong way, but I agree with you on Tina and Glen getting an upgrade in the new one.

    I definitely enjoy both the original and the remake for different reasons. I appreciate the remake trying different and new things. As you mentioned in your breakdown the exploration of micro-naps was really awesome and if Nightmare on Elm Street ever returns that's definitely something they should take from the remake. I also enjoyed Freddy's mannerisms in the remake, the way he'd just toy with his bladed glove is cool and it makes the glove feel like an extension of Freddy rather than an accessory.
    One other thing I would like to tackle is that you mentioned that remake Freddy is scarier, and while I do agree that compared to the original films Jackie's Freddy is scarier, however, I'd like to point out Robert Englund's portrayal as Freddy in both New Nightmare and Freddy vs. Jason. Specifically Freddy vs. Jason. I feel like Robert's portrayal in Freddy vs. Jason was peak Freddy, imo, Robert took everything he learned as Freddy over the years and perfected it. I would love to have a new Nightmare on Elm Street film with Robert as Freddy but portrayed how he was in Freddy vs. Jason. If we can get that someday that it'll be my perfect Nightmare film.
    Overall, yeah original still takes it the win.
