Fun Fact: The original was inspired by Argento's love for the witch in Disney's Snow White. The use of sets and Technicolor were meant to mimic the look of the early Disney cartoons.

@@fizikz9647 Saying the new suspiria was just an attempt to get cash from the name is probably the biggest stretch I've ever heard. From the start the project showed the very least commercial accessibility. Just because you didn't like it doesn't negate the fact that it was clearly a well made passion project. It wasn't made for people who wanted a by the numbers slasher (wich Is probably what would've turned out from a remake that actually wanted to cash in on the franchise) and opted instead for a arthouse film about feminism and queer identity

@@fizikz9647 You may not have liked it, fine, but it was in no way a cash in on the name.
Suspiria 2018 is a wonderfully intelligent, incredibly nuanced piece of art with layer upon layer of subtext for the mind to luxuriate within.
Whilst it does possess a thematic seam on queerness, as stated by the poster above, for me its draw is how it explores inherent psychological states, and how they are moulded by the world, which then informs our ideologies, and how our ideologies often become fanaticism.
Every scene is essential, and I disagree about it being drawn out and boring. For me Suspiria '18 is a hugely immersive experience, and I couldn't get it out of my head for weeks after watching it.

Whilst I love the original '77 version, the 2018 reimagining is my favourite film. Suspiria '18 is just such a wonderfully intelligent, incredibly nuanced piece of art, with layer upon layer of meaning and subtext woven into it. It's also unique - and yes I'm aware of the irony of making that statement about a remake - but really, there's nothing out there quite like it. The world it creates so fully immersive that I lose myself in it, and feel out of place when the film ends.

I love both versions. And I recommend watching them both more than once. There's a lot going on in both, but only through rewatching them will get more out of it. It took me rewatching the original Suspiria to get it. And two quick things about Italian filmmaking in the 70's and 80's: 1. They prefer emotions over logic (especially Argento and Fulci and outside of horror Fellini) 2. Every Italian movie at the time was dubbed, even if it had subtitles. It was still dubbed because they redid the sound on EVERTHING! Lol What Jessica Harper said is just how Italians made movies back then. Fellini was the same way. You'd shoot a scene while people worked around you and shouted about stuff lol Oh and you're make up looked cool. Ok I'm done and tired. Hope this made sense.

  • @mattdeml7560
    @mattdeml7560 Год назад +18

Possibly already covered in another comment, but most Italian movies were actually filmed without sound and were dubbed over. That were just their industry standard at the time. And they'd hire actors from all around the world, who would just speak their native language during filming, even if their scene partners weren't speaking the same language. It definitely adds to the dreamlike qualities of Italian horror imo

wait, maybe I'm misunderstanding what you were saying re: the head witch's appearance and the lack of a "vitality potion" but that was the whole purpose of them setting up the dance school--to find a young woman whose body would serve as the new vessel for the deteriorating Markos (well, that and to find other girls to sacrifice for the ritual). if I misunderstood what you were saying there, my apologies. as for the demonic entity--that's her shadow self. it's not "doing her dirty work," it's an aspect of who she is that materializes after her mother dies (when her mother is on her deathbed, note the shadow of a hand that "snatches" her dying breath away--giving birth to Mother Suspiriorum aka the Mother of Sighs). as for the gender politics, I don't think the movie is anything like Men (I'll admit to being low-key triggered by this comparison lmao). I interpret the movie to be about the corruption of power, irrespective of gender. the women of the Markos sect are deeply cruel and corrupt (of course, their society exists within but apart from the larger society of West Berlin); the lone male character does not abuse his power but instead tries to help his patients. Susie/Mother Suspiriorum is the most powerful person in the movie but uses her power in a just (if extremely violent) and compassionate way. if anything, I think the film is critiquing *systems* of power, etc etc

The original Suspiria is a better in my eyes it has better color scheme, direction, costume design. Love the portrayal of the ballet school teachers & it’s pretty much seeing a witch cult. Udo kier Frank Mandel also gave a pretty solid performance. He explains the meaning behind the three mothers including the main one Helena Marcos who’s ghost who tries to make Suzy & the students life a nightmare. One of the wildest scene is where one of the ballet students Pat begans to flee from the school right as soon as it took place bam she captured. I did see inferno later on down the road it was pretty thrilling unique & suspenseful. You can definitely see why Dario Argento has a tagline the master of the thrill.

I haven't seen the remake yet and I'm debating when I'll watch it since from clips I've seen, I can't say I'm particularly intrigued with it in part because they toned down the gothic set for something more drab and colorless. I'm sure that mood is fine but I know that when going into the remake, it'll be tough because I love gothic set design and the OG had totally nailed it.

Suspiria 2018 is a movie with a strong sub plot, where history and location play as protagonists themselves. The original Suspiria cut off completely the political context of the late 70s in Germany, Suspiria 2018 embraces it. Under this light the girl in therapy sup plot is essential, not just an unnecessary addition. It anchors the nightmare to reality, instead of a stylish dream, like the original. That was Guadagnino's intentional choice. He didn't mean to make a remake, as Tilda stated. Guadagnino went for the opposite of Argento, as he knew he cannot touch the vision of the original, he did the same with colours, soundtrack, etc. All the opposite.

It's worth mentioning that Guadagnino's film appropriated Ana Mendieta's works without the consent of her heirs, so some scenes were ultimately deleted, but you can still feel the atmosphere of Medita's feminist art, especially in the dance scenes. However, in the case of Argento, it's ignored that the set design was inspired by the work of Emma Kunz.

Imo the original is way more style over substance. Dont get me wrong, some beats are good. But the movie as a whole has too many horror tropes and weak resolution for me to enjoy it in the current decade. On the other hand the remake (thats is more of a remodeling) has both. Manages to get the best parts of the original (soundtrack + photography) and build a much more complete and compelling story than the older one. Soooo... as pretty as the 77' one is i choose the 2018 without a doubt.

The remake is definitely outmatched by the original in my opinion but it has some merit I’ll admit. Argento wisely elevated the film with an astonishing score by Goblin and the jaw dropping cinematography and direction. It more than makes up for the script and characters which are on the weaker side. The remake has its positives, but it’s rather bloated and strangely meaningless compared to how simple the narrative is in the original film. It’s a different take if nothing else and should be applauded for being so different. I enjoyed the video and it’s always interesting to hear your perspective. Great job on the deep dive.

My favorite is definitely the original '77 version. It is so much more fun, tense and exhilarating in comparison to the remake. A Disney inspired fairy tale that is set in a nightmare cursed by witches and bathed in technicolor is such an exciting concept on its face that I allow my sense of imagination guide me through some of the less than stellar special effects available in the 70's.
I can appreciate the remake for what it seems like it is wishing to do. Madam Blanc is much more of a compelling character in the remake, but once she was killed I felt like I couldn't care for the stakes of the movie any longer. It seems to wish to say something about the geopolitics of Germany in 1977 and the struggle between the radical fringes in a space where two global powers divide. Honestly though, the struggle for dominance or power seemed to connect with me much better in Possession (1981), so it feels like a better movie did it in a way that is more exciting and tense. In fact, the Suspiria remake would not have really needed to be a remake apart from seeing this political context of the period overlapped with the power struggle happening within the school

I just watched the 2018 movie - I didn't even know it was a remake, so I haven't seen the 1977 one - and I'm glad that it wasn't only me who was confused by the ending. I was intrigued by the film but it needed a clearer resolution in my opinion. Was Suzie really a witch all along? When watching the movie I thought the dark creature in the end was Mother Suspiriorum and it began taking control of Suzie during the scene when she improvised the rebirth dance.
Also, wasn't Madame Blanc alive in the end? When the other witch moved her head Blanc's eyes moved and she seemed to look at the other witch. Also also, I didn't notice that Tilda Swinton played Markos and the doktor. But I did wonder why the doctor's voice sounded so feminine (at least in the German dub) but that explains it I guess.

It is interesting after rewatching the remake several, my understanding of it became clearer.
I believe Suzy is actually the reincarnation of mother suspiriarum and she was always supposed to go there, that explains everything, another word for it could be "vessel", she is supposed to be mother's suspiriarum's physical body
The moment mother suspirarum could fully take control of Suzy's body was when she denied all other mothers.
And I believe the only witch that voted for mother Markos was left alive to become the new "witness"
That's why she is spared, and that's also why the psychiatrist is relieved of his witness role

  • @crazyfun95
    @crazyfun95 5 месяцев назад +1

I like both versions, but I think a lot of people kind of miss the remake's Berlin Wall "subplot", and I am saying it in quotations, because it's kind of mirroring the power dynamic in the dance academy, so the word "subplot" is used loosely. To me, the film is not so much about women being the ultimate outcasts, as much as it is about political power struggles and how they aren't really in service of those, who they're supposed to service. The coven's power struggles results in their students dying or being crushed mentally, meanwhile that's what the German government was doing to its people. A system that's supposed to serve the public, but it serves only the ones in power. So Susie, as the reincarnation of Mater Suspiriorum, clears the coven of its corrupted elements and restores it.

10:44 / 25:15 Ok those statements gagged me a little lol. They are so different, one of the themes of the remake is trying to tackle generation trauma because of the WWII open wounds that carried to the Cold War, so thats the history part, no matter if ppl liked the execution or not. Like Patricia is trying to help the movement against nazis (evils) that still plague Germany, she has more going on.
Now the first one is just a mostly conventional magical mystery plot that uses the 2 psychiatrists only to give a very rushed explanation that well witches are, indeed, evil and possibly real. This Patricia also shows up and quickly disappears having way less development. So, i don't get your point. Very different plots and the 2018 did enhance a conventional use of witches as evil to a more nuanced approach tied to real life events...

I like aspects of the re-make but I think it feels pretentious and just isn’t as memorable as the original film. It’s admirable that they tried something deeper but I definitely prefer the creepy surreal feeling and insanity of the original, it has more of a pure cinema feel. I liked the description of it being like a nightmare, I think that’s really fitting, it’s like a crazy fairytale nightmare that just pops out at you.
    Nice video

Like you, I'm with the original. It's a classic in the genre. But honestly, I prefer Argento's Inferno, which is part two of the three mother's trilogy that starts with Suspiria.
I suspect you like the remake a lot more than I did. Although I like that they took a different approach with the remake, to me it's a parade of dropped story lines, points of emphasis not emphasized enough, and a grand guignol ending that is just-well, it's a mess. By the time the movie got to the first dream sequence, I started asking myself WTF was Guadagnino trying to do, and I still can't answer that question. You're right, though; with a lot of horror folks, the remake seems to attract a lot of the art-horror types searching for meaning. I hate the remake, but to each their own.
    Great video!

I'm not a big fan of giallo films at all.
They're mostly more style than substance.
Other than the first death in the '77 film I can't remember a single other death in it.
The acting is just horrible. I mean, I couldn't even remember the main character's name.
The exposition dump with Dr. Frank Mandel (Udo Kier) takes away from a lot of the suspense.
I hated the ending. Suzie walks out of the burning dance academy.
    Roll credits. The End.
    I mean, what?!
The Argento version feels as much as a comedy as a horror.
The remake combines style AND substance much better, imo.
The witches feel more flushed out than in the original.
Plus Tilda Swinton is just amazing!
I prefer the remake much more than the original.

I say this as a fan of the original...but spot on! This is one of those films which you're almost not allowed to criticise, and to which allowances are granted not afforded to other films.
I love Suspiria '77, I've bought it on multiple formats over the years...but I'm not unrealistic about it: much of it is outright comedic, and aspects of it are terribly executed. What it does well, it does very well...however that does not excuse its failings.

In my opinion, giallo films are just sophisticated arty type Slasher films
where the killer's identity is a mystery until the end of the film.
If you judge them on that basis nothing in the slasher genre comes
close other than Psycho which is the most sophisticated Slasher
      there is in a way.

The original is a masterpiece, while the remake is a pretentious piece of crap with actually nothing to say and indeed as you say, the epilogue, as is the whole story of the old "man" is completely redundant and annoying. I just kept waiting for those scenes to end.
And what the hell was Thom Yorke's music doing in this film, and this coming from a Radiohead fan, it was a total disconnect and mismatch with the movie.
Actually what would have been a good use of time to fill 2,5 hours would have been spending time with Susy as she grew up among the Amish, because that seemed to be a far more interesting story.
I liked the use of dance for spell casting, that was cool, and of course Tilda Swinton is always interesting to watch.
    That's it.
The original of course has been analyzed to death, the colours, outrageous sets, lighting, unusual camera angles, the goblins (in of itself the reason this movie is far superiour).
The deaths in the original are really original and wonderfully orchestrated, great jump scares like the murder in the square with the guide dog, fantastically handled also in camera work.
Of course the acting as well as the dialogue was crap, let alone the dreadful dubbing, but somehow it fit, the cheesiness, it was somehow perfect.

I will always prefer the 2019 remake, sadly, the original bored me :/ but maybe I just need to re-watch and see if I change my mind
I quite enjoyed Chloe's scenes and the whole Psychiatrist storyline
A loved all the aspects of the film, and the way they approached everything to the last detail
The dream sequences are there for a reason and they elevate the film to perfection.
And as I finished this video it seems you don't get a lot of what the film is about, like Markos rotting away, the dream sequences, Chloe's scenes and the psychiatrist's storyline, and just the witches alone... they are not "evil", they're just in the middle of an internal power struggle while trying to survive the world they live in...
And this is so perfectly depicted...
Everything is, so it shocks me the way you dismissed a lot of it as "unnecessary" and almost "boring" lol

@@JasenPotts the new one isn't some half baked attempt at being "woke" or whatever you people love to say about anything involving politics. If you actually took the time to pay attention to the film you'd know it's a tightly written film about femininity feminism and queer identity. Every frame is oozing with contextual subtext. Just because it is a well made film doesn't make it pretentious trash. Stanley Kubrick films have just about the same amount of obsessive attention to detail yet you don't see people calling the shinning or a clockwork orange pretentious. Also I find it ironic you praise the soundtrack when it's probably the most pretentious part of the film! The original, now that is worthless. Theirs nothing of substance to it its just pretty colors and loud music. It's praised for its style yet Dario Argento is known to have stolen that very style from multiple other directors at the time. So not only is the original a mess but it's only defining feature is literally a stolen gimmick 💀 just because YOU didn't personally enjoy it doesn't mean it's an objectively bad film.

You may not like the remake, which is fine, but it's clearly a well crafted film with very much its own identity - in fact there's nothing like it out there. Again, you may think that's a good thing in terms of enjoyment, but to just write it off as worthless trash is disingenuous.
