What if you were FORCED into being historical in Hearts of Iron 4? What if you had to survive as FRANCE using only the completely historical and realistic divisions, organizations, and presets, and try to avoid collapsing against Germany? Is it possible?
For Sources, visit: / aldrahill or ruclips.net/user/Aldrahilljoin
I've been on a HOI4 binge of using only the historical presets given by Paradox, alongside accurate, historical division organization. This time, it's time for some real, honest-to-goodness suffering as the FRENCH! THis means way too many division designs, and a whole lot of pain!

The addition of Historical presets into Hearts of Iron IV was an awesome thing for massive history nerds like myself. Now, I play REALLY historically, using only the stupid tanks and planes that happened in real life! I'm aiming to do this with EVERY country in the game (or at least every major) so let me know a good suggestion down in the comments for more countries to play!

Yo.
I have a challenge for you. The "stolen equipment only challenge".
Basically you'll play and the only equipment you can produce will be the one's you get via the "stole blueprints" option of the spy network.
Also you could try a "foreign equipment" only run that will be basically like the previous one but you can only use equipment you get from other nations via the market, leases of equipment or production licences.
In both cases you'll have to put on the market all your starter equipment
@@amn0940that’s a cool idea! Trouble is, I feel like I’d be able to to steal quite a lot before the war started!
@@Aldrahillso for balancing maybe you could do it so you can only steal 1 time from any nation. Or 1 type of equipment by nation (british guns, soviet tanks, US airplanes, etc.)
Imagine struggling with historically accurate Ottomans (there's no equipment, standardization or resources to investigate)
It’s on the list, I am not looking forward to it xD
@@Aldrahill Did you try fort Czechoslovakia yet?
@martind5653 yeah, czech forts seems cool
@@AldrahillI am!
Knowing that the allies prepared for a Great War like war, I wonder how these divisions will fare. Probably a lot of pain will be involved 🥖
Withdrawing from the Maginot line was actually historical
Exactly! That was why I did it! to be historical :D
I Have question could you do Poland on historical templates
@@PolishGuy54 why would you want him to suffer like that
@@PolishGuy54 Historical Poland on BICE?
@@PolishGuy54First thing to do being changing doctrines from GBP to mobile warfare, cause our generals were retarded and wanted to do manoeuvrer warfare... with calvary, horse carriages, and train infrastructure that resembled a block of swiss cheese.
I recall there being Republican Spanish exiles who joined the French exile forces. A bunch of Spanish sailors participated in the battle of Normandy as tank crews in a French division under the command of Americans. F-cking wild.
Yup, they were promised help to liberate Spain from Franco after the freeing of France… It didn’t happen
Oh that is so cool :)
@@nathanjora7627 weren't a bunch actually deported back to Spain after the war too? France was not kind to the republicans in exile for sure
Spanish Republicans were exiled from Spain and the Germans put a lot of them into death camps.
Republican Spain was screwed over by the League of Nations whenever possible. They took away their international volunteers but promised Republican Spain would be recognized as the legitimate government of Spain no matter what. When Franco won, the League immediately broke their promise.
The Allies failed to demonize fascism as we did communism. The Cold War is likely the reason Franco was left alone.
After the war we saw fascists as common allies against communism. That was a mistake we are seeing the consequences of today across the globe.
The supposed keepers of the peace sucking up to dictators, ignoring crimes against humanity, it all started in Spain.
@@bongus796 I can’t recall that part, I recall we took in a bunch of Spanish actually but I don’t know if it’s related directly to anything that occurred during the war.
From what I can find, 45% at least of the Spanish that hadn’t already demanded and acquired French citizenship before the war got it after the war, so it seems like most of the 500k Spanish refugees either stayed in France in perpetuity or fled to Mexico.
I love the historical accuracy. The more the better.
YAY thank you
Honestly, I do think that becoming the Napoleonic France during like the middle of the war would make a pretty interesting video. I recommend you do that.
Why settle for one occupation zone when you can have 4-5 German puppets in Confederation du Rhine instead?

regarding the anti tank company assigned to the most "senior" regiment in the infantry divisions
it was simply that for headquarters and logistics reasons (being just a company it didn't have much of either organically), the anti tank company was assigned under the n°1 infantry regiment, the seniority coming from being on the top of the list really, the n°2 regiment was assigned a pioneer company (basically shovel boys), likewise the anti tank battery was assigned to the "most senior" artillery regiment, which was the 75mm regiment, as again, it was on the top of the list
08:35
ah the DCR
slight confusion as the brigade de chars de combat isn't really the DCR you mention
basically the french leaned hard into the infantry support part of the tank, so army group was assigned 2-4 light tank battalions that were then grouped into a GBC (groupement de bataillons de chars, aka a tank brigade), the DCR proper would only come later with a bunch of heated debates, they were supposed in earlier plans to have only medium/heavy tanks (D2 and B1) but due to a lack of equipment, a half brigade of light tank was included on replacement of one of heavies, and due to the hasty constitution of these units, only had half the infantry and artillery the GHQ actually wanted them to have
09:40
now the DLC, aka the "division pétrole-picotin" (petrol-oat division)
even at the time it was considered an oddity by the people serving in them with the weird mix of mech/motorised and horse units, afaik those existed mostly as a compromise to have mas many large units without sacrificing to much in combat ability, which severely handicapped them for obvious reasons, this was in large part because of, well, lack of equipment to turn them all into DLM
nota: the "Light" name in the "DLM" and "DLC" was a signifier for a unit that was nominally, able to switch immediately from a march order to a combat order
22:36
the AMC 35 was not an upgraded medium tank, but was the one other competitor to the "cavalry combat car" program of 1935 with the SOMUA, the cavalry originally wanted a 2-man turret, but with a weight hard limited to 20 tonnes and also wanting good armour, plus a concern over giving Renault too much sway in the armour, the SOMUA tank was chosen as the AMC 35S, the Renault model also featured much worse armour
26:20
the AMX 12t was the prototype for the AMX-13, originally intended to be a 12 tonne tank, together with designs from FCM and Batignolles-Chatillon (a locomotive company), it was originally intended to be an airborne tank, but when the companion transport plane project was canne,d the strict limit to 12t was lifted and it became the AMX-13 we all know and love
This is the single most historical Hoi4 gameplay I have ever seen
You should do Finland with historical templates
I actually have some sources! I’m psyched to try it!
The government wasn't opposed to send volunteers to Spain, the Army was, they had friendly ties to Franco along whom they fought in Morocco
Black ICE is a wonderful mod, especially when you don't understand it 😍
Alrhaill cloud just look up ww1 French division for ww2 cuz not much changed
The amx 12t is the prototype of the amx 13. The main difference is that the 12t is supposed to be air transportable.
4:35 I salute you, sir, for going above and beyond for the historical larp. Keep it up!
Thank you ! I was worried it was too nerdy xD
I love wine, I wish France was real
please do a super cursed version where you play as Vichy France.
since this is the France episode, you should've done both Free and Vichy for the full French WW2 experience
I presume, the Vichy divisions would be the same as in the german invasion, but you will be stuck doing nothing and under german AI supervision that isn't that great. So it would make a terrible video.
Yeah Vichy didn’t change that much, and didn’t do much in the war before being annexed :P
Crazy to see how this series has expanded; keep going!
I love this series! I wish for huge growth in your channel! You deserve it!! Its SOOOO refreshing to see a different HOI4 match
Thanks so much! This weeks video is an Argentina challenge, but after that, it’s two historical videos :D
France: Lets extend the maginot!
Belgium: no.
*Belgium, 1940:*
Finally, I thank you so much for this episode of this series that I've waited for so long !
Oh well you’re very welcome!! Next up is a challenge, and then it’s ww1 Russia :) after that BICE!!!
33:29 ye i think you can do this with vishy as well so technically you can have 3 focus trees regular france, free france, vishy france
The S35 did get a larger turret, a "one and a half" man turret which you can't really model with the game. The best compromise is to show the improvement by making it a 2-man.
Quickly becoming my new favorite channel
the research you do is impressive. You've got a unique look at the game, i hope you keep making videos
Thanks so much! It takes ages xD will do! Lots more coming soon :)
Only hoi4 youtuber worth watching atm! Love it!
I damn thank you so much!
YAY I GET TO WATCH Aldrahill SUFFER!
Making the S35 an interwar tank always bugs me with hoi4. Given that the example of Inter war tanks in the UK are a vickers medium mk I or II.
The ARL 44 was a post war tank, with an interesting history.
Great video as always :)
Its to bad you cant use independent brigades in HOI4 the way they actually worked in real life. Floating tank support reinforcement for infantry divisions across the front actually worked but in HOi4 they just have no org and lose instantly
Yes that’d be so cool!
good video! i am exited fore the moded play thus
Keep up the grind I love your content ❤
Thank you so much!
I would love to see Austria-Hungary but with historical Presets & Divisions :)
It’s definitely coming :)
i love so much this series, cant wait for the next episodes.
Thank you! I think next is ww1 Russia :)
You could have just left the Radios out of the s35 entirely. The French army gave orders not to use radios for fear of interception and false orders. So even those units and vehicles which had radios just didn’t use them most of the time.
True but they still had them!! And the platoon leader tanks still used them, so I wanted to replicate it :)
@@Aldrahill I was just thinking in terms of stats. But your way definitely works.
The S35, D2 and B1 had a "1.5 man turret" where the radioman in the hull could still reload the gun and fit into the turret
I like how the Maginot line worked, diverting the German troops, just, the inability to adapt, killed
(Seriously, no divisions in reserve, no testing equipment in the Spanish civil war, outdated tactics, strategies, and a few other issues
The only thing that was certainly superior to the Germans ans Italians was the Navy...
The Japanese didn't really interact with Europe navally, so, not really relevant)
Like always a good thanks (:
Man i love what you're doing ^^
Thank you! What a kind thing to say
Damn thank you! Hope to see you in the premiere this Friday then :D
There was about 90k french soldiers in the Alps and roughly 2,2 millions on the german and belgian fronts, the french being significantly outnumbered in most engagements against the germans, a big part of the allied troops consisted of belgians, around 850k, 450k brittish and 250k dutch. Against 3,3 million germans concentrated and very well coordinated. War plans got shattered in a weird series of events, Edouard Daladier had gotten Mussolini to agree to an alliance against territorial concessions that hadn't been given to Italy after WW1, in an attempt to create two fronts, but Neville Chamberlain refused. The Maginot was build to make the germans go around it, which worked as intended, but France wanted to avoid France being destroyed with its industry which was mostly concentrated to the east of Paris, so they wanted to extend the front to Belgium and the Netherlands, which lead them to rush for Rotterdam (because Belgium wouldn't let France and in the UK into Belgium) and that left a gap in the Ardennes, that although defended (besides second and third fortications lines unfinished, with reserve regiments consisting of untrained or older soldiers unfit, without extra reserves, with lacks of tanks to plug gaps between forts, and almost no anti-air) they didn't have the time to reinforce.
They had also followed the disarmament and appeasement policies layed out by the US after WW1, because of the debts that France and the UK had contracted, also remember that US congress never signed the Versailles treaty, that's why they they never pushed into Germany, first tank divisions were fielded in January 39, most soldiers weren't equipped, there was one rifle for two men with 10 sealed bullets in early 1939, most of them didn't even have uniforms and didn't have any form of training besides their basics untill they saw combat, their basics were 5 to 10 years old for some soldiers. There was also a huge lack of radios that weren't produced in time although budgets for production were significant and way more than enough, but production started too late, again a concern to repay war debts to the US. When french divisions moved in to counter german attacks they were already gone or behind them, they had to run messengers in cars or on horseback because of the lack of radios, no one actually knew where the germans were, they would just run into them without preparation and would end up getting encircled in most cases as reinforcements came too late. In 1939 there was over 1k brand new fighters that had been produced in just one year, but there wasn't enough pilots trained and for fighters production also staretd way too late. If mass production had started in 1936 rather than 1939 the french airforce would have matched the Luftwaffe in numbers of fighters. The brittish also kept their airforce back and didn't want to send pilots. They abandonned France, as they believed that they had lost the war and were going to get invaded by Germany, they were planning a last stand in London and were asking french officials to do the same in Paris, but government wouldn't have Paris destroyed while the french army wouldn't accept capitulation, which is what lead to the armistice. You also have to know that France lost more men between May and June 1940 than in any month of the Great, it's not that they didn't fight and they were quite succesfull in Norway before they were called back to France because of german offensive.
There was also a lot of french politicians that were pushing for war in 1936 after Germany remilitarized the Rhineland, which was taken as a declaration of war, when the german army was in no shape to fight and probably would have gotten swallowed by the professional french army. The US are largely responsible for the defeat of France in 1940, which is why they forgot the WW1 debts after liberation in an attempt to gain french support during the Cold War.
There's also a lot of other details that would have to be mentionned in what lead to France's situation in WW2, lot of issues regarding military high command, political issues and so on.
Man that frontline in the belgium side with 14ish generals asigned to 5ish with mutiple fall back lines snd using the terrain was quite cool. Really pro, not meta but pro
This was quite a good one, up there with the Italy one for beautiful madness
Thank you! I think so too :D
This isnt represented in hoi at all but retaking the maginot from the french side was intentionally made easy so if they lost some ground they may very well just be able to take it back. Though by the time the allies reached there the maginot had largely been cannibalized for the Atlantic Wall so didnt really help.
Very true, and a super cool idea as well - very in keeping with the goals of tench warfare, taking, holding, and losing ground constantly
i think you should have given yourself the mechanized I tech in 1938 or whenever it started to appear historacly. it would be one more thing that the inadequate french industry had to produce but would make the actual divisions more interesting and would be appropiate for the challenge/roleplaying.
Don’t want to cheat! Want to ensure other people can play the same way :)
18:02 It's the Loire
"Oh boy this feels like history". Yes... Yes it does.
I really hope you will make an episode on the Netherlands.

Happy birthday Aldrahill, my birthday is april 1st as well, we are april fools!
Woo fellow April fools!
@@Aldrahill Yeah i turn 19 this april first!
Will you do minor axis and allied countries too?
Very tempted! Makes for some weak and boring videos though xD
@@Aldrahill You think? I think it would be interesting you trying to hold off the soviets as the axis minors and perhaps quite a challange. Although because you play the base game for these videos, the German Ai might just conquer the soviets alone so to not make a pointless video that ends very early without much happening, if you make one, I would recommend that you buff the soviet ai a bit so we would have some sort of historical accuracy and the soviets wouldn't capitulate in 1941/42. I can understand if you decide to not make one because it possibly would generate less views and perhaps it wouldn't worth the effort then and perhaps it's harder to find division structures for these countries since they're a lot less talked about and weren't the main charachters of this historical event. I love your historical videos, they're always really fun and interesting so keep up the good work!
Oh yes, Napoleonic France would be awesome!
First to the conflict, First to exit the conflict
I'm so happy for you to have the opportunity to play Black ice for us
I’m scared but excited xD
I just realized you have uploaded almost 5k videos. Dang
I used to do let’s plays that were dozens of episodes long everyday :P stuck with that WAY TOO LONG xD
Surrendering is quite fun in hoi4 tbh
i wonder why in hoi theres no change for if you have different layouts of regiments and battalions. like if you have 4 inf battalions and 2 arty battalions, it doesnt matter if you have 2 regiments of inf and 1 of arty or 1 of inf 2 of arty, each with 1 arty battalion. like im not very acquainted with how divisional layouts change or matter in real life, but i would assume it matters if you have different layouts but in hoi all that matters is the battalions, if you have the same number of each battalion type in 2 divisions it doesnt matter how you lay them out
I feel like you should do this series with the BLACKICE mod, since you're going with historical accuracy here

Probably unlikely :( also the USA don’t get better ranks until later on
France did try to expand the Maginot line to the border with Belgium, but Belgium saw that as an act of aggression, so France backed down.
So basically, Belgium is partly to blame for the fall of France.
When is Paradox gonna add that as a feature?
More specifically we had a deal with Belgium to create a giant maginot line going all the way to the end of the belgian-German frontier, which they backed out from.
Already added - everything is belgiums fault!

Second time asking for the historical Luxembourg divisions game
Fun Fact in all aspect the France army at the start of the war had better equipment and tank then Germany, they where just stuck under the old guard not wanting to reform the army thinking that the best approach was still the same as ww1, where the German purged a lot of the old guard. A issue that persisted when the Fourth Republic was reformed which leaded to the Gaul taking charge and reforming the government into the 5th Republic that we know today
Indeed, they were surprisingly well equipped! They just lacked a few things like bloody radios as well as poor doctrine.
