Yes! There is no magic pill that doesn't disable some important part of you.
After losing my dog, my father in law, and my son in 6 months (all in shocking ways), I was put on antidepressants. They served to delay the grief cycle for 5 years before I realized that I needed the depression in order to heal. I could have taken those pills for the rest of my life at a cost of 150$ per month and my liver or kidneys. That's depressing. Time, compassion, hope, and self-worth was what I really needed but couldn't afford.
Of course I was depressed! They should have been worried if I wasn't depressed.

Just today I listened to a neurologist talking of a study related to rats and their ability to play, and how rats born deaf aren’t able to pick up social cues that help them play with others. They played less, had less social ties, and ended up more aggressive than their peers. I was reminded of your current dive into this issue, and the connection between depression and aggression. It seems there’s a science behind it that goes deeper than just humans. I’m also reminded of an Alan Watts quote where he says (and I’m paraphrasing) “In a world of luxury, it is imperative we learn how to enjoy ourselves, or we will destroy ourselves.”
That sort of quest takes more than just a chemical recalibration, which some people do need, but it’s more important to find a way to contend with reality that feels peaceful when it cannot feel enjoyable. So often our perspective of the chaotic outside world is a mirror for the instability we carry inside.

Thing is antidepressants only work if one has a particular chemical issue. They can be life saving for those with such issues. If they are prescribed in error, as is so often the case, then they can make matters worse. They will only have a numbing effect on those with that particular chemical response. We need greater understanding of individual response to drugs. That said humans are being isolated more and more and there is only one solution to that.

The sting can cause lack of sleep and other issues that might interfere with one's ability to cope in this crazy world. I have taken antidepressants for years due to severe depression which runs in my family. It is but one component that has made it possible for me to function along with many other things of course that include; quality family time, exercise, nature, and artistic expression. Medication isn't the only treatment protocol of course and a pill shouldn't be utilized to fix a person as it doesn't. There is so much to the complex human being and there are a myriad of dynamics going on in our world that are contributing to the growing unhappiness and powerlessness. The treatment plan for a depressed individual needs way more ingredients than a mere pill and there needs to be changes in this selfish and greedy society in order for there to be positive change. Common sense should tell us that Crooks needed so much more than mere antidepressants to address his feelings of hopelessness. and insignificance. It is sad that Croo'k's life and another's ended due to Crook's desires to be visible and spoken about in death. This problem will continue to only worsen as there are massive cuts in mental health and very little attention being paid to this complex issue.
For those out there who think depression has nothing to do with the growing violence in this culture...... do you think that a happy person who is well adjusted person who has a fulfilling life just suddenly decides that " Wow I am so happy and fulfilled I think that I am gong to acquire a weapon that can kill a lot of people, go out with a bang , and take a bunch of others with me." Common sense should tell us that there is clear discontent and inner turmoil going on in the hopeless and depressed individual.

I was married to a man who had bipolar and if he stopped taking the meds it would throw him into really strong mania. He would cry one second and laugh the next. It had to be horrible for him. He tried to overdose and spent a while in the hospital from there to the mental health hospital. Nothing worked. He hated how the meds made him feel . They actually like feeling all jacked up from the manic part of the bipolar. He didn't sleep. He was completely out of his mind. I figured why he was so messed up. He had been smoking pot with another bipolar friend of his. It was pure hell. All chemicals need to be removed from these people. They don't really understand chemicals and your body how it can react. Even an over load of caffeine can be a trigger. To keep this from messing you up plenty of exercise outside in the sunshine. And good real food and good quality vitamins and minerals.

    • @bipolarbear9917
      @bipolarbear9917 2 месяца назад +1

That is absolutely true for some people, but not everyone. I have bipolar 3 (cyclothymia), and I now use cannabis as a mood stabilizer. It naturally lifts up the bottom by increasing serotonin which alleviates my anxiety and depression, but it also virtually cures my insomnia by helping me to relax enabling me sleep well. When I abstain, I get restless, anxious, hypo-manic (not hyper-manic or psychotic) with terrible insomnia. Cannabis (edibles being best) works for me, but it’s entirely up to the individual and their particular metabolism. With some people, alcohol, cannabis and other substances can do the opposite and trigger a psychotic episode. So, one needs to be careful and find what dose and medication, if any, most suits their specific metabolism. Do these medications have significant side effects? That’s always an important question. Do your own risk/benefit analysis. More research into mental health and how to improve it needs to be done. 🤔

There's something else - sudden withdrawal from anti-depressants can cause psychotic episodes, violent shaking, high anxiety and hallucinations. Prescribing anti-depressants is the cheap way to fix a problem. Therapy is needed in conjunction with the prescription and that I'm sorry to say, is unaffordable. The last I checked a counselor with a license to practice therapy is upwards of $140 a hour - and once a week sessions are recommended. Anti-depressants can help with chemical imbalances but they aren't the whole cure. In some instances it's a bandaid. And if you feel the need to rip the bandaid off, there is no inexpensive treatment or exit plan for withdrawal, at least one that isn't covered by your insurance. By the way I am not speaking from experience, but from someone who has loved ones who are being treated for anxiety and depression with medication as well as a former graduate student in psychology with a specialty and an interest in adolescent behavior. Thank you for your discussion on this topic. As I recall Elliot Rodger was prescribed Xanax and Prozac eventually switching to Paxil, then stopped taking it for a year before his rage expressed itself with a killing spree. Anyway, thanks.

Having said that, I think many teenagers and young adults are sadly unaware that your 17- 22 year range tends to be the most dreadful when it comes to mental health because your mind is still developing and with that comes a lot of uncertainty, sense of not belonging and change that can have a really big impact. I can agree that perhaps in that year range it is essential that you have friends who can keep you in check. I wish more people understood that this is just a phase most people go through and no matter how much you think your life isn't worth living, it's not true and it gets better. I am about to hit my 30s and i'm kinda depressed about that more than anything, but it's nothing like how i felt back in my early 20s. It was way worse.

But my brother was on Welbutrin for 3 months, then did the unthinkable and deleted himself. He left a journal on his computer that explained how the meds effected him. But yeah, I'm pretty sure this guy was on meds, because it seems like most people are. And I do believe those side effects are real. I doubt he would have done this without the disinhibiting effect of meds. Also, the guy who ran over the Christmas parade in Wisconsin had a history of meds. It's tragic to think of people doing these things because of side effects of medication. What a waste.

I think the problem is that anti-depressants should only be short term for the vast majority of patients. Something to help a person get going, but the long term focus should be on understanding the root causes through therapy so that a person can learn to cope naturally. So many problems can be solved through such simple means. Having a healthy sleep schedule can do wonders for a person's mental and physical health. And that's just one example.

Suffering is necessary to build strength of character and resilience. Numbing "pain" with pharmaceuticals does not make it go away just delays its effects or allows it to build up to critical mass. The Assyrians had a saying: hard times make strong men, times of plenty make weak men. Grief, dealing with deep psychological wounds cannot be salved by medication. Mining for gold, is how I would describe the trials and tribulations we undertake, the rewards far outstrip the disappointments. Self esteem and confidence is not always reliant on other people. All depression is situational, not chemical. Common symptoms are disturbed sleep, anxiety, and chronic deep fatigue. It can be met with good food, exercise, sunshine, relaxation. If your life sucks, depression is normal. It cannot be fixed with pills. You must either learn to reframe how you see your reality so that it becomes meaningful to you, or you have to make changes in your life. I would rather spend a week in a sunny new place in the winter if the winter blues are getting me down than start a trial of pills. If a vacation doesn't boost my energy and get me back on track, then I have to look at my job and my lifestyle to see what is making me so tired.

I’m a fan of the channel who is listening to this with some trepidation. I understand meds have special implications and risks for young people; I absolutely get that. Nonetheless, for some people, meds are the difference between life and death. I’ve known someone who bid the world adieu after years of resisting the idea of meds, not helped by a loved one who said “But meds won’t fix your soul.” The idea that meds simply depress symptoms is a dangerous generalization. Sometimes meds lift a fog and let you be the person you really are. Often, I dare say usually, person taking meds is trying to get back to reality, not run from it.

Good analysis Nick. Psychiatric meds can save lives and end lives. Credible mental health providers frequently insist that patients participate in behavioral-cognitive therapy while taking medication. These meds were never intended to be a long term solution but patients often refuse talk therapy. Providers have no time to counsel the patient and usually just write a prescription. It’s a dangerous cycle.

It depends on the nature and cause of the depression and anxiety. If it’s basically a chemical cause: e.g. Menopause, then chemical support helps hugely.
Then again it needs to be the appropriate medication at the correct dose. I tried Citalopram years ago, for a short period, when I could feel it was different from my usual chronic depression. It just made me drowsy. I started on Sertraline last year during a horrific long-covid/anxiety spell, and I don’t have any side effects.
I have other endocrine and cardiac issues, but starting on ADHD medication has helped hugely. It’s a chemical disorder, and the chemical management is helping put some order back.

I like you. One thing I can testify to, is that (aside from trauma caused) as the Bible says, sin dwells in us. And so because of this, we have guilt and guilt causes depression in our minds and it gets harder and harder to deal with it because the real root of it doesn't get dealt with- as you said- the medicine only dulls you- this I also know from experience.
The answer? Jesus Himself. The great Physician. He drew me to Himself with "the cords of compassion".
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:7.
    Faith makes Reality real.
Such is the friend we have in Jesus, who died to take away the Sin of the World.
He says, "Come to Me, all those laboring and being burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, because I am meek and lowly in heart, "and you will find rest to your souls." Jer. 6:16
For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.

There are case such as women suddenly taking off thier clothes when a stranger winked at them or something similar. I have heard the hippocampus in young people today is already about 15% smaller than their pararents was at the same age. We have a future coming with no inhibitions - no filters. An npc world.

@@TCRS is my understanding that people with chemical imbalances cannot function “normally” without medication. For those people, it is certainly not a copout to incorporate medication as part of their treatment. In fact, without medication, many chemically imbalanced individuals would be profoundly disadvantaged by their chemistry as they seek to deal with reality in a responsible way. I do not dispute that antidepressants seem to be over prescribed and certainly can dull reality in a crippling way.

It takes courage to take these brain altering drugs. Courage that could be used elsewhere.

Not all depression is the same. Some depression is driven by anxiety. Quiet the anxiety and the depression goes away and yes, your reality can become much more clear without the background noise.
There is depression from true sadness like grief. Should you medicate grief? I guess that depends on how dibilitating it is.
These kids are usually neurodivergent and are bullied and teased horribly. Some get PTSD from the abuse and some get angry and
rageful. I work with kids that switch schools multiple times to escape bullying. An anti- depressant is definitely not going to fix this type of situation or a kid with a personality disorder. It may lessen the response though.
Depression/anxiety can run in families and have a genetic componant. Sometimes everything is actually fine but you cant see it without meds because your brain is way to busy.
Sorry, I think your using too broad of strokes on this one.
Its not a one size fits all or is cut from the same pattern illness.

Anti-depressants have their place, but I feel it should very much be a last resort for young, developing minds. Reality, or various forms of it must be very in your face for young people, they are exposed to so much more imagery and information than any other generation before them. From the facade that other people show themselves living their “best lives” on social media, to the consequences of global climate change, atrocities committed around the world etc… it’s all very much slap bang in their faces and must be overwhelming. Maybe understanding mental health and an openness to empathy need to make up a greater part of education for young people.
