- Kevin Bacon has starred in some of the most influential films in cinema history. Ingrained into our popular culture forever, Bacon's films span every genre of the human condition. In true Bacon style, he embraced the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" trivia phenomenon and founded SixDegrees.org, a charitable initiative that links people to charities and each other for the purpose of making a difference.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Kevin's one of those down-to-earth, charismatic people who you wouldn't panic if you met in the street, and he wouldn't act superior. Bacon will be cool until his last day on the planet.
Which is totally opposite of what I used to think of him. I see him in a different & better way (now).
Bacon gets crispier and crispier
@@strangemarkings Aye he's done just right
Huh, who would panic meeting ahuman? I';m kinda lost on that one
The thing that spins me out the most about the six degrees of Kevin Bacon is that the mathematical formula behind it has been used to develop a cancer treatment. There's a documentary called How Kevin Bacon Cured Cancer all about it and that's just cool
Thanks for the tip about the documentary, that's a trip about the math. Love Kevin Bacon's work, even Footloose. Stir of Echoes is one of my faves & his small part in "In the Cut' w/ Meg Ryan & Mark Ruffalo was really well done.
What a guy.
Too cool. Also mmmm Bacon. Mmm Kevin 🥓 Bacon. Lol
He mentioned the PSA he did for 9/11 - He donated his time for our company as a spokes person for a PSA for PA victims of 9/11. He was so professional and sincere. The goal was to find the victims and their families in order to get them the resources they need) financial, legal, emotional, etc). I was thrilled he mentioned it! He did it for FREE!!
I wish he could explain where the plane went in Pennsylvania?
@@KASPLARFO we never heard much about that..did we?
@@KASPLARFO the plane crashed into a field in Shanksville at presumed maximum thrust in a near vertical dive. There are plenty of pictures of the result which admittedly is basically just rubble. I wouldn't be surprised if it was shot down by US fighters, a decision that makes sense considering what else happened.
@@robertborie8479 if it was shot down by US fighters I assure you it wouldn't have crashed into the field, more likely it would've been vaporized in the air.
I am 2 degrees from Kevin Bacon. Back in the 80s I had the pleasure of being taught by his wonderful Mother at the Community College of Philadelphia. I tutored for her as well and she often talked about her two sons and how proud she was of them. Kevin had just done the Diner movie at that time and his brother was playing in a band. His Mother was an amazing instructor!
Isn't that one degree?
@@Vyselink the mother would be second. He would be first.
He started with feeling threatened and turned it into empowerment.
That's what brilliant people do.
Exactly. The first one to do this was Cinder-ella.
Love this reply, one of the best I’ve read on youtube!
Go forth and be brilliantly joyous.
The best part of this is that I've never heard of this game.
Humility, graciousness and kindness+absolutely positive message. Thank you, Kevin Bacon, thank you, TEDx Talks.
A guy like him, nervous, reading from cards, makes me feel like everyone is human...
Jeff Vader make you feel like human that’s it
If only everyone understood this.
Except my dog
Actually, it's a robot. Kevin Bacon was killed in a plane crash in 1988 with Tom Cruise, Wayne Gretzky, Madonna, Chewbacca and the Pope. Weren't you listening?
He's an actor...
"I open up the refrigerator and ... there's Paul Newman."
Yes, I've had hangovers like that.
Salad dressing. ;)
The reason those nerds picked him to base the game on is because he's been in so many movies. The reason he's been in so many movies is, he's a pretty good actor.:)
+joseph gilliand And that 'separation' and 'Kevin Bacon' both have 4 syllables and rhyme
@@BIT1FFY Thank God you said it. I was starting to wonder if I was the only one who noticed that it's obviously a play on "Six Degrees of Separation."
@jack bauer mmmmmmmm........bacon.......
All those roles hes played
N I only remember him being in tremors
RIPD was good as
When I was on the military we couldn’t have cards or games or anything. We had to sit there and stare at monitors. We played this game all the time. It really helped keep us sane.
I love this. :)
Awesome! And thank you for your service!
Love this guy. Always so humble. His wife is just as sweet with a quick wit. One of the few hollywood couples that are still in love. Heard them both talking one time how they love to embarrass their children, especially when they were in their teens. Knew then I shared a special bond with them as I understood this parenting style. 🤣. The Bacon boys also have a band!
What's amazing is Kevin didn't realize what an absolute compliment was being paid to him with the creation of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game. The first time I heard of it I was like WOW what an awesome concept and what an awesome actor! It means your work is so prolific and vast that you can be connected to any other actor as well as lots of famous people who are non-actors. Plus it was just a lot of fun to play. I was shocked when I first heard he was pissed off about it. No, it's a gift! A compliment on your extraordinary work! And it's been going for 25 years now.
Kevin Bacon is THE MAN. There is no debate to be had.
And he has a Bacon number of 0
@@JuancharroVlogs "0" "0" "0" "0" "0" 🤣
But this is Rachel Maddow.
I thought Willem Dafoe was THE MAN
Kevin is a mega talented man. And he makes efforts to be all he can be. And brings to the table the avenue to help others achieve the same in themselves and there community. Now that's a talent you don't find on the big screen.
I was honored to interview Kevin and Michael Bacon in 2001. I was instructed to definitely not mention the game. It's so beautiful how it's all come around. He's a great guy.
Lol, I read that "Kevin and Middle Bacon"
Nothing's better than bacon. Only double bacon tops it
Was it about their music?
So if the game were about Michael Bacon would it be 7 degrees?
I was once sitting at a restaurant about 10 years ago, and Kevin Bacon was a few tables over with his wife Kyra Sedgwick. When the waiter came from their table to ours, I joked to the waiter that I was now two degrees of Kevin Bacon; he and my co-diners audibly groaned. When the waiter, relayed the joke to Kevin Bacon, he laughed a little and made a polite wave. He seems like a genuinely good guy.
More like "Bridges-Li _moan_ !"

this game kept the boys and me busy during my 2 deployments to iraq. me and a buddy sitting in a guard tower on a 16 hour shift playing this game passed the time like no other. thank you kevin bacon for helping me through my 2 tours.
How many babies did you murder?
Lots of lessons to be learned. I love his humility and honesty in this talk.
Good for him taking something he didn't like and turing it around and into a website for helping folks~
I’ve always enjoyed Kevin Bacon’s acting roles, he is such a relatable soul.
It is inspiring to see him take that step, effort and reach to further good in the world.
It can be uncomfortably awkward to step outside of our comfort zone, ask for help, to help end suffering for ourselves or others that we may never know. That is a super hero with a invisible cap! I love me some bacon! So that is my far reaching 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon!
It's interesting to me how he felt so threatened initially by the game but it really turned out to spread his name and make him more famous. Then eventually he used it to do good things and feed charities.
I think it was a confidence complex or rather self-esteem issues he had and still does to a certain extent.. He has a drive to make others happy, to "accept" him and for positive praise.. I believe if we are all honest with ourselves, we want to be remembered for something good at our funeral, which is how he started this "talk"..
ursaltydog Absolutely!
I agree plus he admitted that he doesn't feel like he can compare to bigger stars so there is a level of insecurity that comes with being a "A-" list celebrity. At least when you are "B" list celebrity you know you are but when you are or in his case once was an "A" lister it greatly affects your confidence and self-esteem. It's the same thing you hear about women celebrities who were once pursued because of their beauty but now that they are old they are overlooked and forgotten.
A-list celebrity? If it weren't for that GAME, which looks more like a giant, planned PR CAMPAIGN after he TANKED post-Flatliners after being in a STRING of MAJOR BLOCKBUSTERS with HUGE HOLLYWOOD STARS and was reduced to a "villain" role in "The River Wild. That was his FIRST "major" film all on his own carrying the male lead role by himself. How did that work out? He was in ANIMAL HOUSE and FOOTLOOSE and APOLLO 13 and JFK, for God's sake. You REALLY think he belongs on the "A-.list" with TOM CRUISE and BRAD PITT and TOM HANKS and DENZEL WASHINGTON and all the other TRUE SUPERSTARS who EXPLODED out of similar starts to what he had? You've got to be joking. His last "hit" was Flatliners in 1994. If it wasn't for that game, he'd be forgotten by now. He'd be HANGING OUT WITH CHRISTIAN SLATER.
Justin Bosley and then wrote it all off on his taxes. Get real.
He really shows his humanity in this presentation
Andrew Velonis , no matter the role, the position or title... celebs, CEO’s, presidents, monarchy, whatever... we are all people, some more fortunate more than others... but all are responsible for what we are given and how we use it. It’s great to see the humble side of people so much more than the boasting side. Everyone is an example to everyone else...
I just gained a lot of respect and admiration for Kevin. And I'm definitely gonna check out that site.
He's great, but he really could learn to prune his stories down a bit. Brevity is the mark of the master. This was way longer than it needed to be.
Major Zipf ya, he's the only person who's ever thought like this.

I helped use the internet to connect my dying German Aunt who had settled after the war in the UK with her family in Germany when she became too sick to travel. We set up a webcam (back in the days of telephone line only internet) so she could chat face to face. THAT's the true power of the internet - connecting those who would have no other way to do so. I am liking actors who do not have swollen heads. He is good and he is humble. He has made a difference in his life, Yay!
Yes he is still just a guy on the block, great guy♥️
This makes me respect him all the more!!
You should see Dolph Lundgren's Ted Talk.
I worked with an actor who insisted on billing himself as director, actor, producer, AND wardrobe coordinator. lol. A complete narcissist. When he mentioned his girlfriend chose most of the clothes he wore for the small film, we questioned him on why she did not get a credit for wardrobe. 'Oh, I didn't even think of that', he said. Well, of course not, because he was hogging the spotlight! lol. He would eventually do the same to me and others on the film. He smooth talked Cinando into removing the film from my profile. Meanwhile, I was co-producer. And CInando listened to him! Still can't believe it, but perhaps it's a blessing in disguise that I'm not associated with that narc.
I love how authentic and humble you are. I admire you as an actor and a man. Thank you for this awesome ted talk. God bless you.
Kevin you have no idea how much people love you.
Clearly Kev’s legacy is for the greater good. Hats off to him
The greater good
I never thought of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon as derogatory in any way. I always assumed it meant that he was a seriously hard working actor who connected with a lot of his peers. I'll admit to having seen the first Footloose in theaters... Yep. He's done some really great stuff since then, but I think A Few Good Men is my all-time favorite.
I thought he did great in that marvel x-men movie, he was pretty scary as a bad guy.
Sleepers too.
Working with jack and tom at that age must have been everything
It's not at all, it just shows his breadth of work. But I can see how he thought it could be, before finding out about it.
That's exactly his point. He felt so insecure that he took it that way. He's human too
Everybody loves this guy. He's the real winner in Hollywood.👍🏼
In 1992 I worked on the film "Miss Rose White" starring Kyra Sedwick, Kevin Bacon's wife. Kevin was there and caring for their toddler son. One of my many jobs was handing out per diem to the actors. On set Sedwick asked me to give her per diem to Kevin. She was in costume. I found Kevin and gave him the money. He said, "Wait a minute! Don't you have something for me to sign? Didn't they tell you to get confirmation you gave me money?" I said, "No." This was my first time being an A.D.on a film set. Kevin took the time to explain to me what I needed to do protect my job and do it well. This was also my last time being behind the camera. After given the gift of watching the cast of Miss Rose White work both on and behind camera I felt encouraged and inspired to go back to being an actor. Film sets can be crazy places and every kind of human being can be there. But if you are not separated from the likes of Kevin Bacon, its going to be worth being there .
I never thought he could be so funny 😊❤ Bless him, his talent and his being so human.
I like Kevin Bacon. I think he's a very talented actor that doesn't get enough respect. Nice to see him doing something in which he is trying to make the world a better place. Two thumbs up!
Taking Chance. A great tribute to our fallen heroes.
His best ever.
Everyone should see it.
I've loved Kevin since "Footloose"! He & Kira are both good, real people as well as being good actors. I love him even more after watching this!
I figured it’d be a compliment - you’re one of the most well connected, highly worked actors in Hollywood.
Right... There's an early 90's moment where movies got really amazing for a while and he was part of it all. I'm thinking of a few good men scent of a woman JFK pulp fiction earlier... footloose flat liners top gun as Good as it gets. So many more we had only movies to live off back then.... Esp if not a huge reader...
I just adore Kevin Bacon! He's a very talented actor and a great human being.
His acting is A list in my opinion, hes been great in every movie I've seen and just a good guy!
I just love this guy - he just seems genuine, always !
i legit never thought of this game as depreciating to him, i honestly thought it meant he was in so many things that so many people can be connected to him. It's interesting to hear him say he absolutely hated it when it first started.
Its funny listening to the Great Kevin Bacon talk about himself as a "Lightweight" actor. I never thought of him that way. I could listen to him talk all day. I just love him.
There is a life lesson here. Sometimes, when you're humiliated or you feel you're being made fun of, you just have to lean into it and find a way to make it work for you.

Wow. I always considered 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon an ode to his greatness, longevity and his popularity. Had no idea he felt that way originally. Awwww. 🙁
Bob Dylan once told me, "Never drop a name."
That Was pretty funny.
Could you explain it to me? :) English is not my native language.
"Drop a name" is a term that people use to describe when someone "happens to mention" that they know someone famous. .. So for Kevin Bacon to mention that we was talking to (famous) Bob Dylan and that Bob Dylan told him to never drop a name... irony. :)
And in the next few sentences, he dropped several more famous names. I thought it was funny.
If you drop a name will it bounce or shatter?
He's still so good looking. This talk was amazing. Such a cool guy. Kids be a "do-gooder"!
He has such a great personality.
He's such a nice person, I've run into him at a restaurant and he definitely recognized my mom and I but couldn't place where from, and smiled at us and waved across the restaurant. It was so cool. We both worked at the Whole Foods he shopped at, and I always gave him the best smoothies after that😂

This is incredible. Very few celebrities do more than buy expensive cars, jewellry, etc. so it's a breath of fresh air to hear this. Utmost respect for Kevin. Same with Alicia Silverstone. Love her too.
0 degrees, baby! I worked for an alternative radio station and was an actor in South Florida, and we booked the Bacon Bros into one of the clubs we represented. Rode around in a limo with him and his brother for a couple hours. Got to talk to him about acting almost the whole time. Very cool and non intimidating.
I love Kevin as an actor His performance in "Taking Chance" touched my heart so much as all his movies do but His portrayal in that movie was the best from him. He truly is a phenomenon.
As a veteran who served in Iraq during the timeframe the movie is based on...I 100% agree with you. I felt he understood the pain of loss
That movie was moving
I love Kevin Bacon. He may not be as big a star as some, but he is down to Earth and real. I also love it that he is helping the world stay connected. Thank you, Mr. Bacon.
He is the center of the universe.
If he is the center of the universe, then the universe has some 8 billion centers.
I never even considered that the game was derogatory towards Kevin bacon. in any way. Just goes to show how celebs are hard on themselves like everyone else.
At the time it first came out, I wondered why it wasn't called six degrees of Meryl Streep because I felt she had been around longer and been in more movies. But Kevin works better for the game because of the variety of movie types he has been in. He isn't a great actor, until X-Men of course, but he doesn't stick to one genre and he usually plays himself so he doesn't have to study for months for a new accent like Meryl does.
I thought it was too prove that It's a small world
@@smoothlyamusing1502 Hollywood is... They use the same 500ish actors over and over.

This is awesome. Kevin Bacon ends up being one of the greatest human beings ever.
I loved playing that game growing up! Kevin Bacon, you are no lightweight; you are a beloved Hollywood icon! Thank you for all the memories 🧡
Never met Kevin Bacon, but I met Tina Fey once (who has a Bacon number of two.) I looked up and met eyes with her and said, "You're Tina Fey!" (More out of surprise than anything) and she looked at me and said, "Yes, and you're not!" curtly and walked away.
Pickles - Ouch!! Cute cat btw 😊
who is Tina Fey?
I would've hit her with a "thank God for that" as she walked away. :D
Loved Kyra Sedgwick in The Closer. She has been married to Kevin Bacon since 1988. That is like 100 in Hollywood years. That is a level of success none of the actors he mentioned, who were on the plane, have achieved. Puts him on the top of my list.
Kevin Bacon is a cool guy and seems very nice. I've always enjoyed his acting and the characters he's played/movies he's been in.
one of my favourite actors...and underrated....so many good movies...and so good performances....and not one single Oscar....it is inexplicable! !!
Love Kevin Bacon!
Never once thought this game was a negative!
Thought of it as a compliment to him because he is such a successful actor and just a great guy!
The concept of Six Degrees is actually the same as The Butterfly Effect. ❤
If you want to appreciate Kevin’s skill, go watch Mystic River and Stir of Echos. Fantastic movies!
I liked "Cop Car".
1 degree- I drove his mom, sister to Sundance as a limo driver, at the time I didn't know who they were till the end if the drive (I knew the had the last name Bacon). So I told his family that he had done a movie nearby in Lehi Utah (footloose). His mom was sitting in front with me and says to his siblings "Hear that kids, Kevin Bacon did a movie here." They all started laughing and let me in why it's so funny. Boy did I turn RED! They were very friendly and kind.
This is, hands down, the most famous person I've seen to do a TEDx talk.
globally more famous?
ya well fair argument when you word it like that as Kevin Bacon is not all that famous of an actor. I am an Indian, but dont have any misconceptions about popularity of India personalities.
India = / = global. Nobody cares about Indian actors outside of the Indian public and some others.
Dolph Lundgren has done one as well.
Monica Lewinsky did one.
The River Wild was the film he was doing with Meryl Streep at the time, just had to drop some cinema knowledge there
Oh my gosh! That really was a good movie.
Giving back is one of the best things anyone can do......Kevin Bacon is amazing!!
He's a greater actor than he thinks! And now, having seen this I know he's a great person to boot! And still very cool. I loved him best in "Quicksilver" Jami too - all of them. Molto Bravo Kevin!
I actually, really, appreciate this dude.
I lived in a very tiny market town near Wales last year. My gym was a stonethrow from my cottage. And Kevin was in there at the crack of dawn, like me. We were the only ones in, and weirdly, i kinda guessed it was him (despite being in the middle of nowhere) before he even got off of the weights machine (the hair was a give away, and you don't see many people before 7:30am, so you get to know who's who), and it's a small gym, but we both just cracked on with our sessions without it being a huge deal. I had even forgotten the 6 degrees game.
Afterwards, i said to the staff at the counter, 'that was Kevin Bacon, right?'. And they had held all their crazy excited feelings till after he said goodbye and had left the building.
Turns out he was filming nearby. But it was the first time I've been around someone famous and actually been humble enough to understand, they're just people. I always thought it, but he made me actually get it because he was just doing his own thing and so was i.
*So funny he thought he was a joke in the whole situation when the guys literally meant for him to be the opposite, like 'can you believe through these few people I can get to a celebrity as big as kevin bacon!!' I love it haha, so glad it stuck!*
True story. I worked in a comic and sports card store in 1991 and I sold a Cal Ripken baseball card to Kevin Bacon. Zero degrees of separation!
I wish that number was a part of actors' profiles on IMDb.
Yes, yes! Do this now.
my friend wrote a code for this in school - it took all the imdb info and spit out bacon numbers for them
Some actors would have multiple numbers cos there's no solitary chain like there is with us nobodies in real life. Some actors could have dozens of numbers due to the many various connections between themselves and Bacon.
Furthermore, doing that could rob from the fun of actually playing the game. It'd be like revealing spoilers to the actors' movies... which are sometimes revealed in the synopses anyway, so I guess it wouldn't matter...
@@BlackieNuff Wouldn't it just display the lowest number? There's no point showing a 5 if there was also a 3. Plus, you'd still have to work out what the movies were, so not too much of a spoiler.
A guy like him, nervous, reading from cards, makes me feel like everyone is human...
I had no idea that the man who gave me nightmares in my childhood did a TED Talk. Kevin Bacon portrayed Hollow Man, the character who horrified me when I was 5 years old because of my extreme fear of human anatomy. I had no idea that he did a TED Talk until now.😮
He explains the Ugg phenom in one sentence
Lol I never realised why so many lovely young girls were wearing uggs We should to wear them to keep warm before central heating became 'normal' in households - 😂😂
I Really Appreciated Seeing Kevin Being Himself And Speaking From The Heart. He Seems Really Real, And Very Like The Characters He Often Plays In Movies Or Television. He Is Unpretentious & Humble & Very Likeable. He's Always Been A Favorite & Of Course There Is His Talented Wife, Kyra Sedgwick. It Is Admirable That He Wants To Do Something More Meaningful With His Life & Reach Out To Help Others. Bravo, Kevin! We Love You, Man!

True philanthropy is the measure of a man and what he does when no one's looking.
YES and AMEN 👌 💖

pathnativejam I agree that the way we behave when we think no one is looking and there are no negative consequences is the measure of a man, but philanthropy by definition means lots of people are looking. Otherwise it’s just being a good person, which I agree bacon seems to be.
But how many rich philanthropists do that stuff just because if they didn’t, they would be crucified for not “giving back”?
Definitely..
Helping people realize things and overcoming a life-challenge....that's philanthropy. Bezo's ex-wife giving billions to left-wing charities....not so much. I like to be personally involved in change.

Isn't it ironic that the only TED lecture that I've seen where the speaker reads from his notes is the only one who makes his living by memorizing his lines ?
LOL. Yes and... in film most film shoots the actors get lots of takes until the director is satisfied...
I don't know if he has done teather, that's where memorizing lines is tantamount.

I feel like the headline reporting his burial would be something along the lines of "Six Feet To Kevin Bacon".
"..animals, y' know, are very, very important to people, because you care about them."
In addition to the general admiration I have for him as an actor and for this charitable work, I thought his subtle jokes were hilarious. Too bad the audience was such a downer.
Besides he comes across as a gentleman, no not these, the good kind😒.
George Hugh I agree with you! He’s wonderful and they are so boring!
The audience simply didn't get his jokes.
I think the sound man just wasn't picking up the audience enough. It sounded like they were laughing ... you just couldn't hear them very well.
I thought they laughed. These Ted Talks all have the same sound levels with the speaker and the audience as well. It’s not the same sound as say a stand-up show, or say a rock concert.
It's so refreshing to hear a star, known worldwide, has all the same insecurities as the rest of us
OMG! He didn't realize what a tribute it was to his work and people's affection for him.
I met Greg Rollie backstage at a concert in Oakland. He was the singer/keyboardist for Carlos Santana who was in _Paco de Lucía: La búsqueda_ with John MgLaughlin, who was in _Dave_ with Laura Linniey, who was in _Mystic River_ with Kevin Bacon giving Carlos a Bacon number of three. That gives me a Bacon number of 5.
Took me a few minutes to find, but that was fun, lols.
Edit: So I was just on the phone with my dad who it turns out knew Hoyt Axton who woked with Wallace Shawn who worked with Kevin Bacon.
I've always thought he was a great person. This sure proves it.
I'd like to sit down, throw something on the grill, kick our heels up, and chat. He probably has some really great stories!

Unless your screwing her than your going to get the "3rd degree" from your girlfriend lol
Another actor would have just assumed the game was based on how awesome he is. Kevin Bacon took it and used it to do something good - shows what a good person he really is.
