Hey Jake. I put one on my Epiphone Les Paul a few years back...working like a charm. Cheers

I usually replace stock Gibson vintage style tuners with Kluson Revolutions. They're lightweight, very smooth (19:1 ratio) and greatly improve tuning stability even without the locks. I don't typically put locking tuners on SG's since they're usually heavier and I don't want to contribute to neck dive. I think the last set I bought were $50 new and you can often get them on sale when Musicians Friend has accessory sales.

I have 3 SG’s and have zero tuning issues. My special had grovers installed, but the other two are stock. The angle does not seem to be an issue for me. I think string butlers are ugly

Why doesn't your SG have the crown logo on the headstock or the serial number on the back?

It’s an 87 SG Special. That model did not have a crown on the headstock. The serial stamp has significantly faded over time and is hard to see but it is definitely there. You have to hold it in just the right angle in the light! A lot of older/well-loved Gibsons are like this, including my own 91 Gibson Les Paul Studio Lite, 05 Gibson SG Standard, and 92 Gibson Les Paul Studio.
